How do I start? This was my first year joining Key Club. To be honest I really didn't know what to expect but I was open for anything. Before joining Key Club, I did not think it would give me many opportunities and advantages. I was really surprised on how much I liked my first event. When I first arrived, there was a lot of people and I was pretty nervous. The first person I talked to was the president, Asia. My first impression of her was that, she's really nice and approachable. She cleared a lot of my confusion and misunderstanding about Key Club and I was reinsured that I can join the club. The walk was really fun and I had tons of happy moments. Through the walk I met a lot of new people and eventually became really close to them. I'm really happy that I went to this event because if I didn't I would've missed out on a lot.

CHINA DAY

TRACY XU, BAYSIDE HS KEY CLUB MEMBER

The China Day event was a really great experience to have. I got to meet new people and was glad to make new friends. I helped out with setting up the event and was lucky enough to even be apart of holding the dragon. It's great to know about the Asian culture but to experience it first hand is another. It was exciting event to be apart of.

2ND INTERNATIONAL DRAGON AND LION DANCE CULTURAL FESTIVAL

My experience at the lion dance event was really fun and entertaining. This was my first year that I participated in Key Club events and it was really different from what I had in mind. I really liked how the other Key Clubbers and I worked together during the event to set up, clean up, and also hand out flyers and bags. We were also able to watch all the lion dance people and other people perform. The show was really successful and many people that passed by the street came to see the performances. This new experience made me look forward to more opportunities that I can work with Key Clubbers and create new memories.

BAYSIDE X QHSS POOL FUNDRAISER

Although on the day of the fundraiser it was raining really hard, a lot of people still showed up. Every table was full and it was hard to find open spots to play, so many people had to join other tables. However, it was still really fun and I got to meet so many new people from other schools. There was also a pool tournament and that was very interesting to watch and see who would win.

Garbage Picker Upper

Garbage Picker Upper is something new that Bayside High School Key Club has started doing. We started our first round of this project with all the officers and some friends that were interested in helping out. We had all the equipment prepared so we were able to do this after our club meeting.

We separated into four groups and walking around the school area look for any kind of garbage that was thrown on the side walks. First, we walked down the street picking up all the garbage on one side of the street. After 15 minutes, we walked to the other side of the street picking up garbage while walking back to school. Within 30 minutes, there was already 3 full carts of garbage picked up.

Overall, this was a great experience to have and for students to help and clean the community around our school. I hope that when the weather gets nicer, there would be more opportunities to do this as a club and make our community better.

FALL RALLY

Fall Rally 2019 was definitely more fun than it was the previous year for me. I knew a lot more Key Clubbers this time around and I even got to help one of my friend to set up for her workshop. The workshops I attended were all amazing, and they all taught me valuable lessons to remember for a long time to come. I really want to host a workshop next year, and hopefully I can pass on something I know to people that aren't as familiar with it as I am. I look forward to Fall Rally 2020!

Breast Cancer Walk

In Corona-Flushing Meadows Park, most big community service clubs from schools around the borough all came together for the Breast Cancer Walk. They set up this walk around the park and the police department was there to help out with security during the walk. The volunteers checked in art a website and would write down if they were a support, a survivor, or walking in memory for someone they knew. Around 11 AM there was a ceremony to begin the walk. When the walk started, people walked around the perimeter of the park. At the end, people talked about their experiences or their loved one’s experience with this condition which made this event even more memorable.

Light the Night

My experience at Light the Night has been incredible. It was my first time going and all I could say is that it really touched my heart to see people coming together, supporting one another for the fight towards cancer. The lanterns they were giving out symbolized different people: red for supporters, white for caner survivors, and lastly gold to remember those who have died. When night fell, and the lanterns were lit, the view was breathtaking, especially when the people with white and gold lanterns were called to stand together in the middle. We were able to have a moment to honor the fighters and also those who have died. It was also amazing to see many people with red lanterns coming to support including myself. Although I may not have people in my life who had cancer, this event helped me to understand that life is not about giving up and there is still hope even though times of trouble.

The Totten Trot race was another experience in my life. i saw adults participating in the race even though the day was cold and rainy. I was surprised that little kids were also participating in the race. During the event, my job was to give out water to the runners, but it was pretty tough because it wasn't just light rain, it was raining pretty hard. With the hard rain and cold weather, adults and kids still were able to continue running. When I saw this, it motivated me to help them out, so I decided to give out water in the rain and other Key Clubbers also joined me. I hope that I'll see ,ore people at the race next time.

My experience at the Totten Trot event was exciting and fun. While participating in this event, I saw a lot of people from different age groups that also attended the event either as a runner or a volunteer. There was also people that made their own costumes in the race. When I saw people trying their best in the race, it felt heartwarming and meaningful. I felt that eceyone in the race was having a fun time and it just made me want to help out more. Even though it was raining during the race, people were still passionate and enjoyed this event. Moreover, I felt that this event was more significant to us because the T-Shirt that we were given was designed by a student from Bayside High School. Personally, it was a fun experience with the Key Club members and this place, known as "the castle", was really beautiful. Next year, I want to be a runner in the race instead of a volunteer because i want to experience something different. I hope that more people join this event enxt year, and also having a meaningful experience.
