For teacher appreciation week, I wrote a thank you email to my coach, Mr. Baccuzza. He played a big role in track: keeping us safe and also entertained.

Even though sometimes he makes us run in raining weather or tells us to run the annoying mile repeats, at the end of the day, he still makes us giggle. By joining track, Baccuzza made me feel welcomed. I appreciate every moment of track. Thank you Baccuzza!

For this event, Key Clubbers ordered food online to support local businesses that are affected by the pandemic.

Local businesses are negatively impacted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Let me give you the facts. According to a study done by US Private Sector, “37 million jobs are vulnerable to layoffs as a direct result of the pandemic.” So many people are struggling. But as a community, we can help our local businesses. To support restaurants, you can simply order takeout over the phone or from food delivery apps. Another way to support local businesses is by donating! Liftfund is a nonprofit organization that supports small businesses through donations. I hope everyone is healthy and well.

During this pandemic, masks are a basic necessity to keep ourselves safe. However, many individuals are unable to protect themselves because they cannot afford masks, even struggling to afford food and water. The Illumination Foundation is a non-profit 501C3 organization that provides services for vulnerable homeless adults and children in California. I showed my appreciation by writing a short thank you note to the staff, who work in order to improve the lives of others.

Love for Elders

My experience with the Love for Elders event was a tribute to my grandparents. Going into quarantine, I had a lot of time to take care of my grandparents, much more than the times before Covid-19. However, some people love alone right now or are ill in a hospital. I thought this event was a nice opportunity to help elders who are currently alone feel loved.

Most people spend their time indoors on their electronics everyday due to the virus that is going on. Free rice is an app that allowed me to help those in need of food by answering easy questions like 3 times 3. I think Free rice is an excellent program because anyone can spend 5 minutes on the app and contribute a meal to those who in need. mask up new york To stop the spread of COVID-19, everyone should continue to wear their face coverings, social distance, and wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.

The Mask Up event provided a fun way to encourage the use of masks. I created a poster based on frontline workers because they risk their lives everyday to protect others. I participated in this event because there should be more posters dedicated to mask-wearing.

Flyers are great visuals for educating the community and I am glad I participated in this great campaign. I recommend this event to others because a few minutes spent developing a poster brings awareness to a significant issue.

On October 30th, Key Club presented a Five Guys Fundraiser (because burgers and fries are perfect for the spooky season!). Our school’s student organization also presented a movie night showcasing Nightmare Before Christmas to get us into the Halloween spirit. Students had the option of buying delicious fast food and enjoying a movie all in one! Five guys food wasn’t bad at all, although I prefer McDonald’s over it any day. If you enjoy greasy fast food, then this chain is perfect for you! Besides raising money, our members also participated in raising awareness about Autism and this non-profit organization.

My name is Ewen Liu and I am from Bayside High School! I’m working with a non profit charity called Luv Michael. They train, educate, and employ autistic adults at their bakery in NYC. Over 90% of autistic adults are underemployed or unemployed. The journey to a paycheck can seem nearly impossible for them. You can learn more about the issues facing autistic adults on my donation page and if you’re able to donate they will send you some of their amazing handmade granola and a handwritten thank you. K-Family Picnic was about getting together to learn about different social issues and raising money for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. I was surprised by the enjoyable activities in the breakout rooms. Everyone participated in a murder mystery game and a guesspionage jackbox game. I learned that our combined determination can solve and do so much, even change the world. I would recommend this event to others because it was both fun and informative. K-Picnic was one of the best events I have ever been to.

But, there are instances where millions of babies suffer from maternal and neonatal tetanus which causes unclean deliveries. During this time, families want to make sure that they are safe and healthy. This may be especially worrying for new mothers and their babies who are seeking for the best ways to stay safe. Although Covid-19 has bought a feeling of uncertainty, it is important to thank doctors who risk their own lives to save the lives of many others. I wrote a Note of Hope because it is important to show appreciation for healthcare workers and their extensive efforts.

UNICEF Charity Walking for Unicef with the Charity Miles app was a very valuable and enjoyable experience.

The event gave me the opportunity to be active rather than simply staying in front of a computer screen all day. I was able to separate myself from schoolwork and head outside which was very de-stressing. I felt that it was a meaningful experience because I could gather friends to participate in the event with me; it sparked friendly competition and made the activity more entertaining. Not only did this event help me become more active, I was able to advocate for UNICEF at the same time. I really enjoyed this event and would recommend others to participate as well. -Monica Jiang

H T A M f e c i Un 2021 1/27/ UNICEF Math for Good Challenge was so easy and simple yet helpful. Taking the quiz was super quick since it was timed for only a minute. In one minute, you had to answer as many questions as you can, and based on the number of questions you answered correctly, a certain amount of money will be donated to UNICEF. It is so cool how I can raise money for kids in need with just a minute of my time. THe problems that were given was super simple questions like multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Hydrate for 28 is an epic 28-day wellness challenge for Key Club students to help raise awareness of the water crisis while highlighting the importance of staying hydrated. This campaign is designed for individual Key Club members to focus on their mental and physical health while learning about global causes, with an opportunity to take action too. Board officers and members take on this challenge to drink at least 4 bottles a day since hydration is key to keeping a good physical and mental health. As a freshman, I was very excited about this year’s conference since I had never attended one. I learned a variety of things from each of the workshops and found all of the instructors to be very nice and encouraging. One of the aspects that I enjoyed most about the conference was the keynote speaker we heard on the first day, Sergio Argueta. I’m sure that I wasn’t the only one who found his speech inspiring, motivating, and compelling. Although we did not expect our Key Club conference to be virtual, I still consider it a success and appreciate all the hard work everyone put into this experience!

Lady & The Tramp My experience was great! The movie was clear for me and to see and I was able to interact with my friends! I loved the spaghetti scene so much as well. Thank you for hosting this movie for us!

Klaus Although Covid-19 has made it practically impossible to meet with fellow peers, Key Club was able to recreate a familiar feeling of togetherness. Movie Night on the Kast App made it possible to share a movie with friends. The movie, Klaus had an underlying theme of friendship that shined through as it progressed. Being able to bond with fellow Key Club members was a lovely change of scenery, a break from the endless stream of assignments and obligations. This has been meaningful and I look forward to continue with all the events that the club puts forward.

The movie was extremely fun to watch especially right before valentine's day. The chat also made it fun and exciting since many people were joking around and giving their insight on what was happening. Additionally I liked how the movie wasn't too long or short, and it wasn't boring either. It was very fun to watch a classic with the members of key club!

I really enjoyed the Harry Potter escape room event because it gave me something to enjoy while we were in a pandemic.

There were 2 escape rooms, an easy one and a hard one. We were even able to solve the escape room in groups. I would definitely recommend this to others because they’re really enjoyable and it’s a way to pass time while still having fun.

Key Club’s Bingo Board was an event where I would cross out all the things that I had accomplished in Key Club, from participating in previous events to just staying updated with the club. The Bingo Board was a typical board size 5 by 5, with a total of 25 squares. I thought it was a lot of fun to see how many bingos I was able to get. Filling out the board made me realize how excited I am to partake in more events.

This year, the amount of paid members went up by 40%. On January 2nd, we started our year off with Key Club member card pick up.

Members wore masks and we made sure to stay safe during this event.

For those who were unable to pick up their cards, we mailed their card directly to their home.

Breakout Room Games

On our last club meeting before the board elections for the 2021-2022 new board members, our club held a game session through Zoom breakout rooms. Each breakout room was led by two board officer and committee members.
