The Dog River Reservoir Expansion project includes a dam, spillway, intake and pump station, and an 800-foot bridge with roadway approaches. The project helps meet local demand while securing the long-term water supply. The new dam and spillway are designed to raise the water elevation from 760 feet to 795 feet. This work requires over one million cubic yards of excavation for the new concrete spillway and a specialized design to manage water flow. The scope for the new intake and pump station includes constructing four microtunnels totaling nearly 550 linear feet and installing two 2,500-horsepower vertical turbine pumps. The new bridge and its roadway approaches accommodate the raised water elevation and will require approximately 126,000 cubic yards of excavation.

Reeves Young successfully delivered this project using a progressive design-build approach, ensuring efficient collaboration and seamless execution. The project involved the construction of two new pump stations and approximately 8.6 miles (46,000 LF) of wastewater force main to transport flow from the Serenbe development and surrounding areas to the Camp Creek Water Reclamation Facility (WRF). The work began along Atlanta Newnan Road at the Fulton/Coweta County line, with the force main route extending northward from the newly constructed SPS. Additionally, the new Lower Basin Pump Station (LBPS) contributes additional flow to the force main, ultimately pumping wastewater from both pump station sites to the Ono Road Pump Station. This strategic infrastructure expansion supports the growing community while enhancing the region’s wastewater management capabilities.

EMORY WATERHUB LOCATION Atlanta, GA
CLIENT
Emory University
Reeves Young was chosen as the design-builder for The WaterHub, an onsite water recycling system on the Emory University campus which utilizes eco-engineering processes to clean wastewater for future non-potable uses. It is the first system of its kind to be installed in the United States, and is capable of recycling up to 400,000 gallons-per-day – nearly 40% of Emory’s total campus water needs. The cleaned water is then used as process make-up water in Emory’s steam and chiller plants and toilet flushing in select residence halls. The system was built to reduce Emory’s draw of water from Atlanta’s municipal water supply by up to 146 million gallons of water annually. It also includes a 50,000 gallon emergency water reserve which will allow Emory’s heating and cooling systems to function for an average of seven hours in the event of any disruption in water availability.

This project included the construction of a 10 million gallon pre-stressed concrete tank and a 22 MGD pump station. The storage tank is utilized when sewer flows exceed the capacity of the existing sewer system. The peak flows are stored until the flows in the system recede, and the stored volume can be conveyed through the system to treatment. Before the construction of this facility, flows in excess of the system capacity resulted in sanitary sewer overflows.
