Anzac Day commemorations
Greetings from Sharon... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of Wilding’s Rallies. With the coldest months of winter and the flu season upon us, it is important to ensure that we take precautions. I am pleased to say that many staff and residents have taken advantage of the free flu vaccinations this year. In other news, Cassie Scaife was nominated as a finalist at our Ryman Healthcare annual awards for the Young Achiever Award. Cassie started out as a caregiver while still training to be a registered nurse at Ara Institute of Canterbury. She worked in the public hospital system before returning to her passion – aged care and our residents. Although Cassie didn’t win, we are still very proud of her! I was also thrilled for our wonderful gardeners who received a certificate of merit from the
Christchurch Beautifying Association. They received the certificate for their hard work during summer. We are also very proud and excited that we have four of our caregivers completing the CAP (Competency Assessment Programme). Congratulations to Venice Sayson, Catherine Veloso, Ron Llanera and Grace Arbitrario. If you have any queries please come and see me, my door is always open. Kind regards,
Sharon Armstrong Village Manager
Driver confidence course Recently we held a driver confidence course at the village with Yvonne Palmer from Age Concern. This is the seventh time we have run this and it is always very popular. We have plenty more events coming up such as a presentation by the Cancer Society and a Rebecca Nelson concert. I hope to see you there. Claire

Mother’s Day celebrations For Mother’s Day this year, the village held several events. For the serviced apartment and independent residents our activities coordinator Julie Barnes, along with sales advisor Claire Poulson, created a fantastic royal wedding high tea. Not only did Prince Harry (van driver, Gary Robinson) and Meghan (hospital coordinator, Krishna Malcampo) make an appearance, but village administrator Laura Hawkes modelled wedding dresses belonging to our residents. Residents Denise Salisbury, Pat Kircher, Frances French-Wright and Rose Foster still had their gowns and Laura showed them off beautifully.
We hope that everyone enjoyed the special occasion! Above: Resident Pat Kircher with Meghan Markle (Krishna) and Prince Harry (Gary). Below: Resident Wyn Elingham won the raffle, pictured here with chef Freddy Akkara.
To make the day even more special, caregiver Eve Ojales, made a fantastic wedding cake that was enjoyed by everyone, and there was also a special raffle for a hamper pack, which resident Wyn Ellingham won. In the care centre, residents celebrated Mother’s Day with a special happy hour and pampering.

It’s got to be
good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.
“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Eva
Hello, my name is Eva Hillary Riley and I am a hospital resident. I was born on 2 March 1916. I was the youngest child in my family and I grew up on a farm in Taranaki. From a young age I was taught to milk the cows and how to feed the calves, all of which had to be done before I went to school for the day! The school I attended was very far from my home and thus was a long walk, but I enjoyed it. When I left school, I trained and qualified to be a librarian and then I decided to qualify to be a teacher. I started working at Onslow College in Wellington. When I wasn’t working, I loved to dance and I also enjoyed acting. Eventually, I married and had three children, one son and two daughters. I am now blessed with 13 grandchildren and over 20 great-grandchildren! In March this year I celebrated my 102nd birthday. I felt lucky to spend my birthday with my friends here at Anthony Wilding. We had cake and I was given lovely flowers. A big thank you to activities coordinator Julie Barnes.
I am now blessed with 13 grandchildren and over 20 great-grandchildren!
It is amazing to live here and I am happy to be in my room in Wimbledon (hospital) at the village. I love everything about the place and wouldn’t want to change a thing.
Tai Chi Over the last few months, several of our residents have been taking part in a Tai Chi course lead by teacher Sandy Jiang. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and is accompanied
by deep breathing. Some of the residents have found that it has improved their balance, breathing and strength. Pictured: Sandy Jiang instructs residents Prue Fraser, Pat Kircher, Anne Gale, Lidy Mulder and Melva Forde.

Anzac Day
Pink Ribbon Breakfast
Anzac Day at Anthony Wilding is always a big event. This years’ service included our own WWII veterans, and a French exchange student, Adele Christoph recited a beautiful poem. We are very proud of our five veterans!
We hosted a Pink Ribbon breakfast to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. It was a great morning spent in fantastic company and we also raised $1,200. Well done everyone!

Introducing Peter
Hello, my name is Peter Macintosh and I have been the head gardener at Anthony Wilding village for 10 months. I was born in Port Chalmers, Dunedin. In my previous life I qualified as a golf course superintendent and served my apprenticeship at the Otago Golf Club. I also worked as the head gardener at Dunedin Hospital.
I love seeing people enjoy the gardens as much as I do.
After four years at the hospital, I moved to Christchurch and started working at Burnside High School. Then I took

up the position of course superintendent at Hagley Golf Club. I worked at the golf club for more than 20 years. Finally, I worked as the manager of Garden City Communications. I greatly enjoyed working there but I decided that it was time to get back to my passion – gardening. I find my role at Anthony Wilding to be one of the most rewarding. I love seeing people enjoy the gardens as much as I do.
Line dancing We are very active at Anthony Wilding and several talented ladies came together to start the Anthony Wilding’s line dancing group – The Wild Girls! The group of ladies meet to practice every Friday morning and are crowd favourites. They are frequently invited to perform at events in the village and our residents love seeing them. Their performances are fantastic and they always have people clapping along. We can’t wait to see them take the floor once again. Go Wild Girls, go! Above: Our dancing ladies. Back Row: Pam Buchan, Barbara Scull, Rita Baker, Betty Metzger. Front Row: Faith McIvor, Anne Lester, Lily Hogg, Barbara Thomas.
