Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Ngaio Notations.

The village has been quite busy over the last few months with great events and activities. We celebrated Wellness Month with a fantastic Zumba class and we also held events for International Month, Father’s Day and many more.

In November, we will hold the Boccia Challenge and the current cup holders, the serviced apartment residents, are hoping to retain the cup.

The challenge is on!

Margaret Stoddart and Essie Summers residents competed with Ngaio Marsh teams in bowls and croquet. It was a great afternoon out.

November and December are going to be busy months with our market day planned for November and both the Melbourne Cup and race day at Addington will be top events.

I do enjoy meeting and talking with residents and families, so please feel free to call in.

Our croquet lawn has also been upgraded and is now in tip top shape for summer. I know many of our residents are excited to start playing.

Musical Moments Recently we welcomed Zac Johns to the village to speak about life at the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Zac is active in the musical world and has conducted Auckland season of Sister Act, Evita and Mama Mia!, among others. It was fantastic to hear him speak about the NZSO’s current repertoire.

A Trip to the Museum During August, several of our serviced apartment residents decided to visit the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Wigram.

The museum holds the collection of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the aircraft on display are fantastic. The collection, owned by the RNZAF Museum Trust Board, includes early aviation objects and military aircraft from both World Wars.

Our residents loved strolling through the museum and looking at the aircraft and other exhibitions on display.

For some the museum brought back memories which they shared with others over a tea break.

It was a fascinating trip down memory lane.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker.

We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers.

There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display.

The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

“We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”

Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents.

Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.

Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus.

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork.

In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.”

Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care.

“What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Jean and Dick

“We loved it. It suited us extremely well.”

“As much as we loved our townhouse, the time came when we needed more support,” says Jean.

Dick moved into the resthome and Jean into her serviced apartment in 2016.

For Jean, the biggest advantage of living in a serviced apartment at Ngaio Marsh is that she is still near her husband. The resthome is located downstairs from her, just a “lift ride” away.

The staff are just marvellous.

You get to know them very well and they are so friendly

“The fact that we’re in the same building means that we don’t even have to go outside, nothing has changed really,” says Jean.

When Jean and Dick Yates first moved into their townhouse at Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village 12 years ago, they wanted independence as well as security for any health challenges the years ahead might bring.

Jean, a retired pharmacist, and Dick, 98, who was an accountant, moved into the village in early 2006 and lived in their townhouse for 10 years, and they’ve never looked back.

They spend time together every day, either in Jean’s serviced apartment, the resthome lounge or in Dick’s room.

“I also still go to her Happy Hours and she goes to mine,” says Dick.

“The staff are just marvellous. You get to know them very well and they are so friendly,” says Jean.

But it all comes down to being, and feeling, at home, and for Jean and Dick, Ngaio Marsh is home.

Hello Milo Police dog handler, Bruce Lamb, visited the village recently with his four-legged companion Milo.

Bruce talked about his experiences in the field and kept us entertained with many heart-warming anecdotes.

Milo is used to sniff out drugs and money, and together the pair of them search properties, houses and even people. Naturally Bruce and Milo then demonstrated just how good they are! It was an amazing experience and staff and residents loved it.

Out & About

Maori Language Week

On a nice sunny winter’s day, our hospital residents went for a drive around the city and were delightfully surprised when we swung by McDonald’s for ice-creams. These were enjoyed at the New Brighton Pier!

We celebrated Maori language week this year by learning how to make Poi. The serviced apartment residents got busy making poi’s and learning how to use them.

We also held a Maori themed fine dining evening for the townhouse residents.

Father’s Day Father’s Day is always special and this year, we invited the families of the residents to celebrate with us.

It was a warm day, so we decided that a New Zealand classic dish would be just the thing – Fish and Chips! The Fish and Chips shop went the extra mile, and everyone enjoyed the lunch in great company.
