It’s always amazing to see the effort from our village teams and residents as they prepare to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Residents will enjoy Hansel & Gretel themed activities and events that create a real buzz throughout our villages.

Our Father’s Day competition provided some great laughs. It appears that amidst all those Dad jokes, some classic pearls of wisdom can emerge! We thoroughly enjoyed reading all the entries, and I hope you enjoy our winners feature.

Developing these relationships not only benefits our residents, but it also helps us to learn and grow as a company.

Follow the breadcrumbs... and venture into the dark, k, fantastical realm of Hansel & Gretel.l

We’re once again celebrating ing our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet who are performing a take on the classic tale of Hansel & Gretel. ugh Faint starlight peeps through the dark forest canopy. It iss ur. midnight: the witching hour.

Alone and lost, two hungryy children stumble towards a glowing vision of warmth and comfort, an enchanting house made of gingerbread. But all is not as it seems…

The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 6 November and finishing in Auckland on 14 December.

Follow the breadcrumbs and venture into the dark, fantastical realm of Hansel & Gretel for an unforgettable evening at the ballet.

Ryman residents will be enjoying Hansel & Gretel themed activities, and villages will be transformed with decorations, music and dance.

COMPETITION WINNERS

To celebrate Father’s Day, we asked New Zealanders to share their Dad’s sage, witty, or emboldening wisdom in our Life According to Dad competition.

Selecting winners from over 1,500 entries proved to be a rewarding challenge. There were giggles and joyful tears as our judging panel realised the everlasting impact that a Dad’s nuggets of wisdom can have on his children.

Here are some of our winner’s stories:

Gallo’s Dad, Koko Fa’atele’s advice lives on since he passed away 7 years ago. Holding back happy tears, Gallo said, “I can always remember Mum giggling away in the kitchen when he said it.”

“My Mum died when my brother and I were pretty young, so there were just the three of us.”

Mark’s Dad, Frank, wholeheartedly stepped in as both Mum and Dad for his boys. “I’ll be ringing my Dad in Dublin at the weekend and I’ll let him know we won.”

Leaving New Zealand for Australia at 20, David remembers Dad Henry Murrell. “Dad was pretty quiet about me leaving. He hadn’t come to my leaving do and he said it to me at the airport”. Henry’s wisdom is ever present for David, who has since passed these wise words onto his daughters.

Georgie, named after her late Dad George Fraser, remembers how her Dad’s advice put life into perspective. “I was about 18 or 19 and everyone was heading overseas on their OEs and I was at home. It stuck with me.”

Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand Ryman's charity partner for 2019-2020

Ryman has teamed up with the Breast Cancer Foundation in New Zealand for our 2019–2020 charity partnership.

When we asked our residents and team members which cause they wanted to support, breast cancer was the overwhelming favourite.

Residents and staff in our villages and offices will be putting their heads together to come up with some clever and entertaining fundraising ideas, as well as taking part in breast cancer fundraising events such as the Pink Ribbon Breakfast and the Pink Star Walk.

Steampunk fine dining To kickstart Ryman’s fundraising for the Breast Cancer Foundation, residents at Jean Sandal enjoyed a fine dining evening at the village. However, this time it was fine dining with a ‘steampunk’ twist!

Members of Steampunk Taranaki joined residents for a night of entertainment, games and laughter, where residents were encouraged to don steampunk-style attire. Their efforts were an impressive sight to be seen.

Many residents said it was one of the best nights they’ve had!

The RAW Truth Fashion designer and social entrepreneur Annah Stretton has been touring Ryman villages recently to share the amazing RAW story.

The RAW (Reclaim Another Woman) Foundation was established to help recidivist female offenders to change their lives.

Many residents also enjoyed a moment in the spotlight as they modelled some of Annah’s dress collections at the events.

RESIDENT STORY

A loving, caring experience When Michael was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, his wife Julie knew there would come a time when they would need more support. The love and care they have received at Bob Owens Retirement Village has made it a surprisingly healing experience.

Michael, 79, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 8 years ago and now needs round-theclock care. The care Julie sees every day at Bob Owens has changed her view of the progressive illness.

“I wouldn’t be worried about having Alzheimer’s now.

It’s been such a loving, caring experience,” says Julie. “There’s no pain, and Mike’s happy, comfortable and safe.”

Moving into the village has given the couple time to really appreciate life and their love, which spans nearly 70 years. Julie is thankful to have that

time to share with their two children and six grandchildren.

Michael was an associate professor at the Australian National University when he retired at 53. He’d played for the university cricket team against India at the age of 50.

After the diagnosis, Julie realised she’d need support in the coming years. In 2015 the couple moved into an independent apartment at Bob Owens, knowing that dementia care was on site for later. In March 2017 Michael moved into the special care unit for round-the-clock care.

The move lifted a huge weight off Julie’s shoulders.

“The 24-hour care is absolutely amazing. It takes very special people to give care like that. I feel it’s the jewel in the crown of the care centre.”

Alzheimers New Zealand and Ryman partnership Ryman will be Alzheimers New Zealand's lead partner for the next 3 years to increase awareness about dementia, and fight the stigma attached to the condition, which affects more than 70,000 Kiwis.

“Despite dementia being widespread within our communities and touching most families in some way, the condition is hugely misunderstood and feared,” said Alzheimers New Zealand chair Dr Ngaire Dixon.

“Dementia takes a massive toll on sufferers and their families and we want to do all we can to help. Our team has a wealth of experience in dementia care and we want to use our resources to support Alzheimers New Zealand in its fight to improve knowledge and understanding of dementia.’’

“This is a significant alliance for us, and we are really excited about what we can achieve,’’ Gordon said.

Ryman has 841 dementia care beds in New Zealand and Victoria and has plans to build another 640.

Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said he was delighted to be working with Alzheimers New Zealand.
