Greetings from Wendy...

Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Hilda’s Highlights.

We have been embracing the Ryman Healthcare and Royal New Zealand Ballet season of The Nutcracker and will continue the theme into December. Related activities have included character and sweet making, and a piano recital.

events. We are hosting a Remember December walk around the village in conjunction with Dementia Waikato on December 1. There will be food and entertainment for residents, families and staff. If you would like to participate or know more, please do not hesitate to contact Trish de Jong or myself at the village. Donations will go to Dementia Waikato for their wonderful community work.

Each month staff, residents and relatives can nominate someone for a Staff Appreciation Award. Staff can also nominate their colleagues for random acts of kindness. Generally, about 20 staff are recognised so that’s a lot of kindness being spread.

Thank you to all the residents who volunteer in the village, we very much appreciate your wonderful help each day.

Oktoberfest extravagance Townhouse and studio apartment residents had a fun filled day celebrating Oktoberfest.

The morning started off with a mind bender competition to see how many words with three or more letters we could get out of ‘Oktoberfest’.

Later, residents put on their chef’s hats and cooked some lovely German sausages, which complemented other snacks the kitchen provided us. The snacks fitted in with an afternoon of activities including the tasting of German beer.

We also hosted a wine tasting. The day ended with some lovely toasts.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker.

We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers.

There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display.

The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

“We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”

Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus.

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork.

In 2015, Chief Operations Officer Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.”

Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care.

“What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile

Meet Audrey

Following my school years, I started my career working in an office. But then I proceeded to nursing training and enjoyed a stint as a nurse during much of the 50s.

I married a dairy farmer, and we spent 62 years farming at Ohaupo, just to the south of Hamilton.

We had a family of two girls and three boys.

My principle interests evolved around the Plunket Society, of which I am still a member.

I really enjoyed the involvement in the work and companionship from those years with the support group.

I have travelled extensively around New Zealand and overseas, having particularly spent time in Canada and North America. My other interests often centre around sewing.

I reckon the move I made from the country to town was the best move I made.

Also, I am a keen outdoor bowler and I frequently supported the local operatic shows and other events in the wider region.

Hello, my name is Audrey Edwards and I am a serviced apartment resident in the village. I was born in 1932 in Hamilton, then grew up in Te Aroha, in the Waikato. That is where I did my formal education.

I continued to live in the country until I decided to move into Hilda Ross Retirement village where I initially bought a townhouse and now reside in a serviced apartment. I reckon the move I made from the country to town was the best move I made.

Art gallery visit Independent residents recently visited a Rotorua 3D Trick Art Gallery and enjoyed interacting with a series of 3D paintings.

Others stood on what looked like the edge of an ice shelf.

The exhibition works were almost lifelike, meaning the residents could sidle up and show off a few poses. One of the group even rode a dolphin out of the waves.

Maori students visit

Southwell School visit

Hilda Ross’ resthome residents were lucky to have Maori students visit for the day, teaching them Maori phrases and a song.

The resthome residents had a special treat when students from Southwell School came to entertain.

Towards the end, the students, residents and staff joined together singing, as part of Maori Language Week.

The children sang some beautiful songs, with solo performances on the cello, guitar and violin. They then shared cards and gifts they had made for residents.

Introducing Lee

Hello, my name is Lee Murray and I have been working in a lead maintenance role at Hilda Ross since August 2018.

I grew up in Cornwall in the United Kingdom and did my electrical apprenticeship when I left school. I then moved to London where I worked as a qualified electrician.

I really did make the right choice moving to such a fabulous country.

In 2007 I moved to Perth in Western Australia and was employed as a maintenance electrician and facilities supervisor for a mining

company. I enjoyed my time in mining country apart from the snakes and the flies!

I moved to Hamilton in 2016 with my family to be closer to my aunt and uncle. I have five children and one granddaughter. Four of my children still live at home and I am bringing them up as a single Dad. We recently spent the weekend camping in the Coromandel in the North Island which was awesome. I really did make the right choice moving to such a fabulous country.

Selling your home presentation

Art Expo

Every Tuesday morning resthome residents get a visit from one of the classes from the Wondernauts Play Centre. When the juniors come to visit they bring along some books to share with residents. Both the children and residents enjoy mornings of sharing books, with lots of discussion about various pictures and bright colours.
