Greetings from Grant...

Hello and welcome to the autumn edition of Halberg’s Herald.

I hope everyone had a fantastic time with their family and friends during the holidays.

This year is a year of firsts for us and I am very pleased to write my very first column for Halberg’s Herald! Murray Halberg has certainly been a popular choice for our village name as Sir Murray is truly a New Zealand icon and local hero.

I want to welcome you to our community, our first residents moved here in November and our construction team is working hard to complete the village centre.

We’re looking forward to the village centre being completed later in the year at which time we will be welcoming residents into our serviced apartments, resthome, hospital and dementia care centre.

Since our last newsletter we have had a constant flow of residents move in from late November and we welcome you to our vibrant village.

We have been busy over the last few weeks with open days for our village friends and for the general public. It’s an ideal chance to see a typical twobedroom apartment. If you haven’t been able to get along to an open day, call the sales office and we’ll be happy to give you a tour.

Our first residents move in Our first ever residents have settled in well.

Resident Bob Caley lived next door to our site on Tropicana Drive for 50 years. That meant the move here was a new record for the moving company.

“The guy said it was the shortest distance he’s ever had to move someone,” laughs Bob.

The second resident to move into the village was Riley Wouldes, whose brother Nigel and sister-inlaw Ruebena live two doors down from Bob’s house on Tropicana Drive!

Bob, who lives in his apartment, will have a clear view of the rest of the village while it gets built.

Riley had been living in Pt England and initially considered buying into a village on that side of town until he realised he would be nearer to Nigel and his family at Murray Halberg.

His verdict on the day: “Good! Yes, it’s lovely,” he said.

His apartment looks out over the village entrance on Commodore Drive.

His daughters, Denise, Joanne and Fiona, joined him in those thoughts.

Nigel and Ruebena accompanied Riley on his first day.

“It’s good for all of us to know he’s safe and secure,” said Joanne.

“It’s beautiful, it’s just fantastic, I’m jealous!”

Ruebena said.

“Knowing he’s settled in here will take away quite a lot of that worry for us.”

And Riley’s verdict on his new home?

Bob and his late wife Val bought their section on Tropicana Drive for £2,000 from Bill Subritzsky who was also the former owner of village site.

Bill went on to develop the whole street as part of the Parade of Homes in 1968.

“I think I could get used to this!” he said with a big smile on his face.

Village named after Murray Halberg Our residents continue to celebrate the fact our village has been named after Sir Murray Halberg, and they well remember his sporting feats.

Sir Murray became a household name in New Zealand in the 1950s and 1960s as a talented long-distance runner with a string of successes on the athletics track.

He competed at the Empire Games in Vancouver in 1954 and the Olympics in Melbourne in 1956, before winning a gold medal in the Empire Games in the three-mile event at Cardiff in 1958.

Sir Murray’s greatest success came at the Rome Olympics in 1960, when he took gold in the 5,000 metres.

He also won the three miles at the Empire Games in Perth in 1962 and set world two mile and three mile records. He was also the first New Zealander to run a mile in under four minutes.

Since 1963, Sir Murray and his Foundation have worked tirelessly to make that vision a reality for New Zealand’s physically disabled people and have helped thousands of children realise their dreams through sport.

Sir Murray put the fame he gained through athletics to good use.

He is also the name behind the annual Halberg Sports Awards, New Zealand’s premier annual awards event. He spotted the potential to revitalise what were the New Zealand Sports Awards in the 1960s, turning them into a highlight of the country’s annual calendar.

In 1963 he founded the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation with the aim of ensuring that all New Zealanders, regardless of their ability, have equal

Construction of our Lynfield village began last year and its first residents moved in last month.

Long Road Home brings team together Ryman supports veterans’ charity event A memorial service to celebrate the end of The Long Road Home charity trek brought a tear to the eye for many involved in the walk.

The walk was organised to raise awareness for post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI), and was sponsored by Ryman Healthcare.

The early new year trek from St Arnaud along 110km of high-country station roads ended in Hanmer, on January 12, with a memorial service at Soldier’s Block in the South Island township.

Dozens of onlookers gathered at the block to hear accounts from the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust (NZMRT) team that took part in the horse-ride and walk.

They had followed the route taken by soldiers returning from World War 1, 100 years ago, but with the benefit of blue-sky days and a support team.

The event remembered that soldiers returning from WW1 were often left to make their own way home. Many felt abandoned, hopeless and segregated from their fellow Kiwis after witnessing the horrors of war.

The walk was a success and Ryman has signed on to support the trek next year, and the plan is to make it an annual event.

The trust was also in contact with overseas groups, to help spread the idea of supporting those with PTSI. PTSI continues to impact the lives of soldiers that have served in arenas such as Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, Timor and Afghanistan.

“I think 800 people a year are exiting our current armed forces … some of those will definitely be suffering from PTSI,” Mark said.

Organisers Bernard Shapiro, Murray Hill and Mark Appleton, president of the NZMRT, said the group was raising funds for people suffering from PTSI as a result of traumatic events.

The walk was a success and Ryman has signed on to support the trek next year, and the plan is to make it an annual event.

There were wreaths laid at the memorial on behalf of Ryman, a sponsor of the trust and its work.

Book review

Dust to Gold The compelling story of Bendigo station, home of Shrek.

Written by John Perriam and photographed by Stephen Jaquiery.

This fascinating history of Central Otago’s iconic Bendigo Station is illustrated with stunning photographs of a wild and rugged landscape. It also showcases the farms owners, the Perriam Family as well as stockmen, animals, wildlife and memorable characters including the legendary Shrek, filling the pages with vibrant colour.

Shrek was the woolly hermit merino, whose story captivated the world when he was discovered high in a mountain cave after avoiding muster for six years. Read about his famous discovery and his subsequent travels throughout the country as an ambassador for Cure Kids. Incidentally, all profits from the sale of Dust to Gold will also go to Cure Kids, a worthy charity for sick children.

As you read, you begin to feel part of this resilient family, joining them in their struggles and setbacks as they nurture the land in their care while also promoting their merino breed of sheep from “fleece to fashion”.

I felt their pain as they watched their family’s original farm, brimming with memories and dreams, sink below the waters of Lake Dunstan: the trigger

for the eventual purchase of Bendigo Station.

From droughts, weeds, gorse and rabbits to indifferent bureaucrats and meddling politicians, many battles were fought and not always won.

The Perriam family story is a compelling one.

“For me it was a nostalgic reminder of my roots in the nearby North Otago high country.”

This is a book for rural and urban dwellers alike.

It is also an insight into the lives of those who work with and care for our land and country, a blue print on diversifying and a connection with the past for us all.

John Perriam’s prose is easy and uncluttered, with the pages full of accurately drawn high country characters and the sometimes cruel events impacting on the lives of his family.

Independent Resident Profile

Meet Errol & Marilyn

“I still remember seeing her in her little blue Mini driving up the road… and that was it, we became a blended family!

“She rescued me from the Air Force and rescued the kids from eating Frying Saucers every night!”

Errol laughs.

“We decided to wait for this stage to be built because we wanted the morning sun.”

The family expanded when the couple had their son Josh together and being blended certainly had its moments, some of them comical, such as when Marilyn’s dog would chase Errol’s cat out of the window!

Marilyn says village life will still mean doing the things she likes, but just tweaked slightly.

It took a while for Errol Burtenshaw to catch up with his wife Marilyn on the concept of retirement living.

“She wanted to move in (a few years ago) but I was still working,” says Errol.

“I wanted to be mortgage-free and then I thought it would be good to go for a holiday.”

Errol retired from his role at Air New Zealand last year, and the couple is well on the way to ticking both of those goals off.

They have paid off the mortgage and they have two big European adventures planned before their move into the third independent apartment block to be built at Murray Halberg.

Errol has already got back into his drum-playing (they’re electric so he uses headphones!) and he is hoping he’ll find a few other musical folk in the village.

“I was in the Air Force for 21 years and I had to choose between a musical career or the military.”

It was 40 years ago that the pair first met, when a mutual friend held a barbecue.

Both being separated from their spouses, Errol with three children and Marilyn with two, the pair quickly found they had a lot in common.

A typical day will see her and Errol heading out for their 7am walk. Sometimes she will go to her parttime job modelling samples for clothing brand Fray.

And lately she has been on hand to accompany her sick neighbour to appointments.

“I like to be around to help people,” she says.

“When my mum was in a resthome I used to go and feed her and I would often help to feed the other residents too. I’d love to be able to do that in our village.”

Seeing the changing health needs of friends and family had brought retirement living to the forefront of their minds.

Says Errol: “We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but being at Ryman you know help is at hand with the push of a button so that makes you feel a bit more secure.”

Adds Marilyn: “We really want to make the decision ourselves and we love this area and never want to shift away.”

Before the big move there are a few jobs Errol wants to get done around the house. While he won’t miss all that, he’s happy to do it for a little while longer.

“The people I met at Ryman convinced me even more that it was a great organisation to be part of, they are all deeply passionate about doing what’s good enough for mum and I thought that gives the work a great sense of purpose.”

Within three weeks he had the job in the bag and a whole new adventure began to unfold!

“It’s quite different to what I was doing, it’s a whole different type of energy and excitement and the people I have met have been amazing.”

Grant’s not the only one embarking on an exciting new adventure – all the residents are experiencing a similar feeling as they are the very first people to live in the brand new village.

“Since I’ve been here I’ve got a real sense of the scale of change for the residents,” he says.

Our new manager Grant Costello reflects on a slightly different path he took to get here to our Lynfield village.

After working for many years in a corporate consultancy, the born and bred Aucklander decided it was time for a change – and a big one at that.

“I love how energising this role is, there is so much happening all the time. I’m looking forward to more exciting times ahead!”

“Many of them have been in their homes for 30, 40 or 50 years and I appreciate how different it is for them. But at the end of the day it’s a whole new adventure – they can carry on doing the things they were doing but they will have access to so many more things as well.”

Grant also has more of a sense of what living in a retirement village means for residents.

“The feeling of security is a big thing and not having to do some of the more physically punishing things that managing a property entails – I wouldn’t mind not having to do that any more either!” he laughs.

“I heard about the job through a friend of mine and it sat in my head for a week or two but it kept popping back into my head so I thought I should take a look at it,” he says.

Having started the job in the run-up to Christmas and experiencing the excitement of daily move-ins Grant has now been enjoying the busy start to the new year.

“I already felt a connection because both of my parents lived at Edmund Hillary at different times so I was very familiar with Ryman and the Ryman way of care and I was very appreciative of that during what were reasonably tough times.”

“I’m looking forward to connecting with the residents, that’s my number one thing. And then it’s all about gearing up for the village centre opening and building up a big team of great staff who believe in Ryman’s purpose.

Grant is also familiar with the area as his sister lives in Mt Roskill and with the full support of his wife and teenage son and daughter he decided to take the plunge and apply for the job.

“I love how energising this role is, there is so much happening all the time. I’m looking forward to more exciting times ahead!”

Savoury or sweet profiteroles Ingredients ¾ cup water 125g butter 1 cup high grade flour

Pinch of salt 4 eggs

Savoury filling 150g middle rindless bacon

Sweet filling 200g fresh or frozen raspberries 3 tbsp icing sugar 2 tbsp lemon juice 200ml double cream 150g white chocolate 50g shelled pistachio

500g smoked chicken breast (diced)

125g sour cream 125g mayonnaise ½ cup spring onions

Timothy Garlick This makes a delicious finger food as it’s small and easy to eat. It’s always a big hit with everyone and you can change it up and serve it as an entrée or dessert.

This is on the menu at Jane Mander Retirement Village and the residents absolutely love it!

Profiterole method

Sweet filling

• Preheat oven to 180˚C. • Bring water to the boil in saucepan, add butter and stir until melted. Sift in flour and salt, and mix with a wooden spoon over a low heat until the paste starts to dry out. Allow to cool.

• Place paste in a bowl and beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing really well after each egg is added.

• Place tablespoonfuls of mixture onto a tray lined with baking paper. Bake for 20 minutes. Cool profiteroles on a wire rack.

• Put the raspberries, icing sugar and lemon juice into a food processor or mini blender and blitz until smooth. Press through a sieve into a bowl.

• Whip the cream until stiff, then fold in 4tbsp of the raspberry sauce. Spoon the filling into a piping bag and make a hole in each profiterole.

Make sure the profiteroles are cool before piping in the filling.

• Break up the chocolate into a small bowl and melt in the microwave on low for 1½-2 mins.

Leave to cool briefly until slightly thickened.

• Carefully spoon the melted chocolate over each filled profiterole and sprinkle with pistachios.

Leave to set. To serve, drizzle the remaining raspberry sauce over the profiteroles.

Savoury filling • Fry the diced bacon and place in a bowl to cool.

Add the diced chicken with the sour cream, mayonnaise and spring onions. Slice the top off the puff, add the filling and put the lid back on top.

• Serve with your favourite chutney.

Living Option

Construction update The first thing we’re now noticing as we arrive along Commodore Drive is how much more of the first independent apartment block you can now see.

That’s because the row of trees along the boundary has now been removed, and some native trees will be planted.

Meanwhile, as the construction team helps village management smooth out new systems and processes for the first independent block everything is charging ahead elsewhere on site.

The special care and hospital block, closest to Commodore Drive, has now got a roof on and the façade is well under way.
