MRP Alumni House

Page 1

"Cities are becoming a crucial part of the way society now operates day to day. The further we invest in our cities the further we as the user become liquefied and forgotten about in this capitalist-driven world we call home. The architect now has to become the protagonist to ensure power is given back to the people. It's their city, their lives, their experiences. Lets not create theoretical ideologies with no purpose apart from aesthetical form making and profit. Lets create purpose because without motive there is no meaning of any built form and we as the architect have no meaning or purpose. We have then failed not just ourselves but society as a whole.

Let Alumni House be the protagonist of the power back to the people, rip off the shackles and be free for the public domain... Newcastle you've got this."

231 King Street provides an opportunity not to just add a public space to the CBD but to engage the community and reflect as well as project the University of Newcastle's Alumni. The Universities aim is to establish an active, lively and exciting space. It will enable the university to build on its strong reputation through the promotion of its achievements and agenda. Providing a physical space graduates will be able to maintain links with the University. MRP Alumni House looks to expand the brief given to engage the general public. Its location to core corridors can produce opportunities for NCC to promote events and ideas around a public precinct section as well as driving youth into the city centre along with collaboration with the university. The proposed MRP Alumni House is designed to encourage three urban elements of meet rest and play whilst incorporating academic agenda. This enables a diverse urban environment to welcome all backgrounds of the Newcastle community and abroad to be joined in one central place whilst creating a social hub to pivot further exploration of the UON academic corridor and the city of Newcastle. It is hoped that MRP will be a unique CBD icon for years to come.

URBAN ANALYSIS PHASE 1

8

Phase 1 of the 13-week project led to understanding real-life projects that have been placed within urban environments and researching how they work and interact with their users. This investigation led to a unique range of projects from commercial scale to installation species with set outcomes. This provided an understanding of how these ideas and approaches could be brought onto the site and how a crucial spot like 231 King Street could be a social and gathering hub if used correctly. Through this research, I was able to come up with 5 core areas on which to progress the project and create the outcomes desired for the future Alumni House with each researchedproject representing 1 of 5 areas of interest A place to PLAY A place to REST A place to MEET A place to REUNITE A place to REMINISCE

PRECINCT DEFINTION PHASE 2

The sites location to Civic Park is a crucial pathway to development of the site and the area. Development of the academic corridor over the next 10 years will help facilitate ease ability of manoeuvring around the CBD which can be targeted by increasing green spaces across the city. The areas linear and block structures need to be addressed creating a more user friendly CBD location. In all six findings a strong presence to the North and East of site is noted thus how can we sew the regions together to create a bigger hub supported by the development of alumni house.

Through urban analysis and understanding, I was able to reduce our 5 core concepts from phase one to 3 in this phase. This resulted in MRP Alumni being created. 13

SO WITH ALL THIS DATA HOW CAN WE EXTRACT IT TO CREATE A CLEAR VISION FOR OUR PROJECT ?

14

1- CREATE A BETTER CONNECTED PRECINCT FOR WALKING AND EXPLORATION

2- ENCOURAGE URBAN PLAY AS A WAY TO ACTIVATE THE PRECINCT

3- CREATE OPPORTUNITIES OF RELAXATION AND STILLNESS WITHIN THE CITY

To create a clear vision the project took on three core keys for the project and what it should achieve. These three were creating a better CBD precinct for walking and exploration. Encouraging urban play as a way to activate the precinct in multiple forms. finally creating opportunities of relaxation and stillness within the city

15

1- TRANSFORM EXPOSED HARD URBAN SPACES INTO GREEN PLAY SPACES FOR PASSIVE AND ACTIVE USE CREATING A GREEN LOOP FOR THE CITY

2- CREATE A BUILT SET BACK OF 4M ON AUCKLAND STREET TO CREATE A HARMONIOUS BLEND OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACE VIA LANDSCAPE, SUPPORTING A GREEN PATH ALONG THE LEFT OF AUCKLAND STREET AND THE ACADEMIC CORRIDOR

3- THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL FORM MAKING CREATING VIEW POINTS THAT CONNECT ALL AREAS

The three keys for the city leads to the three moves of how to achieve these outcomes from the project. To create a better precinct for walking and exploration it is required to transform hard concrete spaces into green play spaces for passive and active use. It is required to also create a setback of 4m on Auckland Street, this is to open up more public space and domain to create a more user-friendly environment. Finally through architectural form-making , how can we create views that connect all areas 16

Worth Place - Open green space with pathways to relax with open areas to facilitate play. Accommodate the academic corridor for students as well as the public

Civic Lane - Removing buildings 462-466 on Hunter Street will open up the academic corridor whilst creating a transitional laneway from CBD to foreshore providing opportunities for play and economy

Auckland Street - Host to the academic corridor. An inviting space that balances street traffic , pedestrians as well as providing places of rest and meet

Queen Street- A open hub to connect the end of a food hub on Darby to the CBD precinct. an attempt to sew southern and northern ends together

PROPOSED & CURRENT GREEN SPACES

Wheeler Place - concrete replaced by green space and landscaping. This then supporting businesses along the strip with a more inviting area and can help promote future events in such a central space.

exploring through model making of the site the proposed three-arm approach from the site is 2/3 achieved however other methods will need to be used or investigated to complete a visual loop. This is due to the 10m tip point in topography on Laman Street and the Church viusally blocking any potential

Arm Experiment & Specular Reflections Through the two arms (Academic Corridor & Civic Wheeler Place) a test to see the advantages and opportunities to have a CBD precinct that uses specular reflection to expand the horizon and physical view of the user at Alumni House. Observing beyond the physical limitations of the human scale

DESIGN PROPOSAL PHASE 3

24

The design phase led to experimenting with form and programming with a focus on the three core areas of meet, rest and play. This was done in 3D space to understand how the form would work on the site in an efficient way and to improve and sculpt ideas for a clearer solution.

The end building will be made from precast steel components and placed on-site in pieces. This will then enable future removable or development of the site once funding is complete or test the way we can design crucial urban developments without the high expenses that come with these types of developments.
