DESIGN APPROACH

1

My approach to achieving an architectural outcome is predominantly driven by my own personal beliefs and core values that I've learnt and continue to learn. Through the built form we can have a vast impact on so many areas of society so understanding clients or end-users and the reality of function I find curious. Additionally, the use of materials and how they can evoke emotions and feelings. I think the best outcomes can be achieved in collaborative environments where the four areas of Environment, Social Impact, Materiality and Exploration can be tested and pushed to there furthest enabling a unique resolved architectural response. I believe my own core values match similar projects, objectives and values to JWA with a mixture of residential, commercial and public realm projects that all utilise my approach style in different areas or combine a mixture of the four. I highlight these projects and speak about their own relationships to my own core values.

5

1- ENVIRONMENT Kyneton House

I believe that designing to Australian conditions is crucial & enables unique outcomes. I capture and manipulate light, collect rain and use it resourcefully whilst respecting my surroundings and working in conjunction with the landscape to bed a project into the horizon

2- MATERIALITY Ian Potter Southbank Centre

I believe a moment or a texture can create memories unique to an individual and add value to any context. Whether that be the Southbank centre with the concaved concrete opening to the protruding tiles that tell a musical story. Additionally, the function of a building and its key intended operations can be altered drastically based on materiality.

3-SOCIAL IMPACT Melbourne School of Design

My designs positively contribute to social interaction, whether that be with the architecture itself or by design gestures that encourage interactions with others like the Melbourne school of design. This social interaction is excelled by materially of spaces to create these moments.

4- EXPLORATION Ephemeral Pavilion I enjoy exploring unique opportunities to design and create installation pieces or exploring new construction methodologies when applicable throughout my process. This leads to scaled fabrication and collaboration to create unique public realm contributions.

METHODOLOGY

2

Through research proxy, I've been able to deliver a methodology similar to practice. I enjoy the initial phases of a project where I can have a smorgasbord of ideas and test them through conceptual plans or models. This process can help me create some unique and joyful outcomes in a non-linear methodology as highlighted below. I also enjoy the final delivery of the project and having a reflective moment to see what I began with to where I am now as well as presenting to a client or jury that can see the joy in the work and are excited about your ideas.

1

ADOPTION AND QUESTIONING I begin to ask questions not covered in brief for further clarification and directions in which the client may wish to go. This understanding enables me to develop the design process in more detail with the clients' ideologies in mind. This phase sets a mutual understanding and begins the relationship on the journey ahead in regards to areas in which I can direct them on or agree on must-haves for the project. STRENGTHS: Communication, Listening & Question Orientated

2

RESEARCH I investigate site and radius to understand multiple data sets such as demographic, climatic and future developments. I also investigate precedent projects that have achieved similar outcomes. With this research in hand, I'm able to then refine the brief based on the site or external limitations. I would then be able to inform the client of my findings and work through these restraints with them to have an agreed path for conceptual development. STRENGTHS: Macro/Micro Analysis, Graphic & Verbal Communication

7

The design methodology is rarely linear

3

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT This phase leads me to test information I have directly to the site. I usually set out three outcomes I want to achieve which lead my design concepts. These outcomes are tested in multiple forms such a bubble mapping, models and sketches. I enjoy going back and forth in this phase to see what progressively may work well or not at all to advance the design. Additionally seeking feedback from the client and collaboration from others to push the design further. STRENGTHS: Sketching, Models, Software, Graphic & Verbal Communication, Openness & Collaboration.

4

DOCUMENTATION

Once the design has come to an agreed term I like to map out a timeline of documentation. This may be drawing types required, models, to be made as well as back and forth liaisoning making sure drawings are clear for the client or presentation to ensure the ambitions of the project are understood by all parties. STRENGTHS: Communication, Time Management, Graphic and Verbal Communication

8

COLLABORATION

3

I've learnt and continually develop an understanding of the importance of collaboration within architecture. Through teamwork, I've had some of my most memorable projects and experiences. This is due to the connections you make and by having a good team that pushes each other to obtain overall better outcomes for the project. In collaborative environments I enjoy being a mediator, making sure everyone's voice is heard and perspectives are understood. Ensuring this enables the biggest potential pools of ideas or opinions to enable the most out of an experience. Enabling this facilitation naturally leads to a leadership role within a group setting to navigate the project and abide by timings and group checkups to gain transparency between group members and see areas of improvement. This overall leads to delivery of projects on time or ahead of schedule giving time for final adjustments or reviews before submissions. I believe this approach and role is one of my biggest strengths and this excitement and joy translate to other areas of my design work. I believe my approach to collaboration can only be seen as beneficial and match JWA's approach and structure to team environments. This may be in group discussions about a project which I see you support and foster in all your offices as a way of free open conversations for all which leads to a rich diversity of outcomes. Alternatively engaging outside of the realms of practice such as your Lockdown Loops activity engaging each other whilst exploring new architectural insights for personal and shared development.

9

I position myself among peers that want to collaborate to create shared project outcomes

OFFERING

I engage with each member through open discussions and understand each other's theoretical positions and experience

ENGAGEMENT

I agree on outcome and strategy to design and the roles to achieve the desired result

AGREEMENT

I contribute to production, engagement and iterations with the team to progress and finesse desired outcomes

PROGRESSION Final Product - I dedicate time for personal reflection and understanding of the design journey and lessons learnt for the next project.

VITA NOVA

SCALE:MASTERPLAN/RESEDENTIAL LOCATION: 99 Selwyn St Mayfield North YEAR: 2020 SKILLS: ArchiCad, Procreate , 3D Printing, Collaboration

A call to action from the NSW government to propose a new city to deal with rising housing prices and a shortfall in housing stock within Newcastle. The project explored three core political drivers to push the project into an independent city known as Vita Nova. A city built upon, circular economies, space-efficient living and agro urbanism enabled independence from greater Newcastle - escaped from its political and social dogmas, a city for the people by the people. The project utilized collaborative skills, research into the specific context. The overall outcome of the project enabled experience in collaborative settings, master planning as well as extensive model making and experimenting with non-common forms.

ALUMNI HOUSE

5

SCALE: URBAN YEAR: 2021 LOCATION: 231 KING ST NEWCASTLE SKILLS: ArchiCad, Procreate , 3D Printing, Competition, Modeling

Alumni House was a project that responded to a UON competition brief

on a vital CBD precinct. I had to respond via understanding future civic outcomes and how a built form could shape this urban corridor in the next 10 years. My response was to create a modular typology where a level could be disconnected and moved elsewhere, or new levels could be added to the site. This gave the ability for the design to be active in its surroundings & respond to a changing urban environment at both macro and micro scales. Through the project, I was able to understand the approach to public urban projects and their relationships. Additionally as well how key moves can create better civic outcomes for the future.

SCALE: RESEDENTIAL LOCATION: 109 MEREWETHER ST , MEREWETHER YEAR: 2021 SKILLS: ArchiCad , Procreate , Illustrator

A project in collaboration with Urban Villager researched the challenges for first home buyers, A response that removed traditional housing stock replaced by a co-housing model. Focused around affordability in built form and challenging SQM averages to maximise floor plan efficiency. The projects push is to be an example catalyst for people to understand the need and benefits of co-housing models here in Australia but more specifically Merewether. The approach enables a delicate, considered and sustainable approach to the housing typology. ColorBond Monument Finish

APPENDIX The assignment three approaches are based on applying for a type of firm id be interested in working for. I've chosen John Wardle Architects due to their design approach and their practice operation. I've been able to obtain a practice managers information due to a job offering on Seek for Architects and Technicians for both Melbourne and Sydney offices. This ad was uploaded on the 16th of September 2021 addressing the application to be directed Jeanne Skelin with an email directed to careers rather than just their website being a contact email for general enquiries. Although the job addressed architects and not graduates it being open to technicians as well encourages me that there could be some flexibility in and diversity in a selection based on CV and portfolio works.
