1.1 Doing well through doing good Welcome to the 2016 annual Rydon Group CSR Report. Once again you will find a review of the targets and objectives we set ourselves last year and progress on those, alongside other projects we have implemented this year.

It goes without saying this in our current turbulent time, the urgent need for all of us to embrace more sustainable ways of working, living and doing business is increasingly apparent; not a day goes by without our local and world news reporting on complex problems relating to the environment and socio-economic progress.
Sustainable development offers us a framework to ensure the future wellbeing of our communities, our society and our planet. We hope you find this report useful and informative. If you have any suggestions or queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we would love to hear from you.
2016 was a significant year for the national and global community, with the EU Referendum in June and the environmental, social and economic uncertainties this outcome has bought. There are many unknowns and we are currently working on the premise that much of Britain’s environmental law and legislation will stay intact. We continue to be committed to reducing our environmental impact by cutting emissions and I am determined that operating our business responsibly, with respect for the environment, people, their health and safety and the wellbeing of the communities in which we live and work, remains a priority.

2.4 Corporate Governance Reporting “Robust reporting and governance allows us to track, manage and implement sustainability initiatives”. As a highly regulated industry we are required to subscribe to a number of independent third party performance assessments in order to maintain our ability to compete. Most of these are closely related to the core
areas of responsibility referenced in 2.2 and enables us to benchmark and measure our performance improvement. Central to these are the standards to which we subscribe via our external agent, the British Standards Institution (BSI). Performance is reported on a relative scale, enabling us to create measurements, which
can be transformed into CSR KPIs and compared both internally and externally against industry benchmarks. We have 10 sustainability objectives monitored by a Safety and Sustainability Forum, which monitors and tracks progress quarterly and the CSR forum drives the strategic CSR plan for Rydon.

3.1 Our Impact on the Environment Electricity
All of Rydon’s key offices/departments around the country have now switched their energy provider to SSE Green which provides 100% renewable energy generated by a variable mix of hydro-electric and offshore and onshore windfarms. By making this switch Rydon has vastly improved its sustainability as well as investing in the green energy future of the nation.

For example, special permission was obtained to fell a tree which was then replaced by five new plantings. The diligent use of sustainable materials, constant monitoring of the site’s carbon footprint, a bug sanctuary using old tyres, an insect hotel for the school and a wild meadow are all included to benefit the environment.”
Our Head Office has a fruit delivery for staff as part of Rydon encouraging healthy living from Fruitful Office. For every one basket of fruit, with the help of Fruitful Office 1 fruit tree is planted. We are delighted that we have contributed to the Planting Fruit Trees in Africa campaign. In the three months from October to December 2016 our head office planted
36 fruit trees in Malawi, Africa.

Rydon & The Prince’s Trust
Rydon provided staff with the opportunity to join a number of initiatives to help The Prince’s Trust achieve this target in its historic 40th anniversary year.

Rydon and The Prince’s Trust took part in the Million Pound Challenge, a landmark programme targeting £1 million of fundraising to help 1,000 disadvantaged young people get into education, training or employment.
Palace to Palace Cycle Ride Amongst the fundraising initiatives planned, Rydon invited staff to take part in the Palace to Palace Cycle Ride on Sunday 2nd October 2016. The event is a 45 mile bike ride starting from Buckingham Palace, cycling through Richmond Park and the beautiful Surrey countryside towards the finish line alongside Windsor Castle.

Alongside the opportunity to secure a CSCS card, required for working on a construction site, participants also spent time working on their CVs and interview techniques to give them the confidence they need to kick start a career in the industry. At the presentation ceremony, each participant was awarded a completion certificate from The Prince’s Trust and received a further six months support from the trust to assist them in moving into sustainable employment within the industry.

A team of nine Rydon cyclists took to the road between Clapham Common in London and Madeira Drive on Brighton’s seafront to complete the 2016 London to Brighton Bike Ride.
Meeting bright and early on Sunday 19th June at Rydon House in Forest Row, we loaded the bikes and set off to the start point in clapham Common on schedule. Everyone enjoyed the day and are ready for the next Rydon cycling challenge – The Prince’s Trust Palace to Palace charity cycle ride in October. We have raised a considerable £1,140 to be donated to the British Heart Foundation including a £100 donation from Brewers Decorator Centre - Tunbridge Wells Branch. Debbie Selden, Ride Co-ordinator

3.3 Governance and Reporting Data released on the uptake of the international Environmental Management Systems standard ISO 14001 shows that the number of certificates issued worldwide has grown 8% over the last year. The worldwide total of accredited ISO 14001 certificates now stands at 319,324 (source, iema.net).
We successfully achieved accreditation to the new updated standard this year. We are now accredited to ISO14001:2015
The revised standard ensures environmental management is now integrated and aligned with our business strategies.

Improved Environmental Performance Organisations will need to take steps to protect the environment and improve environmental performance. Good environmental management will reduce the risk of regulatory fines and can often identify opportunities to save money.
An Integrated Approach With the new structure applicable to all new ISO management systems standards it will be much easier to implement multiple, integrated management systems.
Thank you for taking the time to look at this report. Our report highlights the key sustainability achievements in 2016 as well as the changes that have been put in place to the way we govern sustainability across the Rydon Group. It is vital that we create an environment for new innovations that benefit people and planet, and enable them to take shape at scale. I am delighted that we have put particular focus on improving and updating our systems over the past couple of years which allows real improvements in sustainability performance to develop. I’m delighted that we met our
2015 targets to improve environmental protection by reducing electricity consumption, recycling over 96% of our waste and continuing to manage and reduce emissions from our fleet. Sustainability continues to be an important part of our development going forward and as you will have seen the journey continues with a new set of ambitious sustainability projects planned for 2017.
