PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member, It’s that time of the year again when the taxman comes calling, and I hope all members who are affected get a nice refund cheque. On the club front, our cub is trading extremely well and should record a healthy profit after tax again this year. These results are only possible because of the continued support of you, the member, and I again thank all members for their loyalty in keeping our club in such a healthy position. Members will be pleased to know that the Board has approved plans for an additional lift for the carpark to alleviate the problems that have occurred with the breakdown in the existing lift recently. We envisage the new lift will be operating by December. Those members who make use of our holiday units on the Gold Coast at Ocean Plaza will see all units at this resort upgraded in August with new furniture and decor at a cost of over $50,000. Those members that have never been to our units might consider this option for their holidays as the rates are well below any comparable rates for the area, with spectacular views and amenities second to none. For more information, contact Barbara Schmitt at the club on 9808 7602. Our plans for the redevelopment of the “Hawks on Second” site are still in the hands of Ryde Council. Our consultants are hopeful that any outstanding issues will be resolved with Council in the coming months. In planning for the long term future of the club, your board is proposing the development of a master plan to maximise the potential of the club site. The first stage of this has been a tender process to select a design partner to prepare the master plan. We hope the selection process is finalised in late July or early August. Development of the master plan will commence soon after, and we should be in a position to update members in the next journal. Members will be pleased to know that the Board has agreed to become involved with the “Adam Gardiner Foundation”. The Foundation was

formed by the family of the late Adam Gardiner to assist sufferers of Amyloidosis which is an umbrella term that describes diseases caused by abnormal deposits of the protein amyloid in the body (a type of bone marrow disease). The foundation has been doing a sterling job on a limited budget in promoting awareness of this disease and sponsoring a clinic at Westmead Hospital. The Club’s assistance will enable the trustees to concentrate their fundraising efforts and more adequately support the clinic. Finally, the 50th Anniversary celebrations will be held from Monday 14th October through to Sunday 20th October, with a new car to be won on the last day. So members make sure you join in that week to celebrate this milestone in our history. The anniversary celebration is a joint Football Cub and Leagues Club event. The Football Club was formed in 1963, and the first steps to form a Leagues Club were also commenced in 1963. A Summary of the history of both organisations is provided in the following pages. The highlight for the football club will be a reunion of players and officials involved in the club over the past 50 years, which will be held on Saturday 19th October. To register for this event refer to the details on page 5 of the journal. Please forward this information on to anybody you may know who has been associated with the Football Club in the past 50 years. So, again, may I thank you, the member, for your support of our club and I hope that you may be the lucky winner of the car in October. Keith Aggett President

REMINDER:

For all members who joined or renewed before 31st July and received a BLUE entry ticket, the $3,000 iDraw is at 6pm, Sunday 4th August. You could win one of 6 iPrizes, including iPhones, iPads, and an iPad Mini. Eligible 5-year members, perpetual members or those that joined between 1st Jan & 30th April may also collect their ticket on the day.

The Annual General Meeting of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in the Heritage Function Centre at the Club on Thursday 21st November at 7.30pm in the Willandra function room. A further notice of the meeting will be sent to all members by the 31st October 2013. RYDE-EASTWOOD LEAGUES CLUB

CELEBRATING RYDE-EASTWOOD’S

50th ANNIVERSARY A DREAM COMES TRUE

WHEN a mix of rugby league diehards from the Balmain Junior League gathered at a Rydalmere hotel 42 years ago they shared a dream. Led by forward-thinking Fred Fayers - an ex-top grade forward with the Western Suburbs, Newtown, Balmain and Parramatta rugby league clubs - the officials met to discuss the prospects of forming a new club to compete in a semi-professional competition. It was late 1962 at the time and Fayers was president of West RydeDundas Junior Rugby League Football Club, and a personal friend of the late NSW Rugby League chairman, Bill Buckley. The NSWRL were looking to start an Inter-District competition in 1963 and already had nine clubs pencilled in - Penrith, Cronulla-Caringbah, Wentworthville, Sydney University, Guildford, Bankstown, Kingsford, Liverpool and Arncliffe Scots. Mr Buckley approached Fayers with the idea of establishing a club in the north west region - hence the birth of the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks. The first meeting was held at the Family Inn at Rydalmere with Fayers appointed president; Mal Finigan (secretary) and former St. George forward, Les Hayes, and Joe Tanner standing on the committee. The committee went about selecting a jumper style and motif that didn’t already exist in the NSWRL competition. It was president Fayers who suggested the colour of scarlet and a Hawks emblem after his experiences in the navy and as an AFL footballer with Hawthorn. Fred coached the Navy team against a Welsh army team that wore scarlet.

Former Balmain and Paramatta hooker Keith Aggett, a leading figure with West Ryde Dundas Juniors, was appointed coach of the Hawks’ first ever squad. Ryde-Eastwood’s first ever match was staged at Cumberland Oval on May 4, 1963 against Wentworthville. The Hawks lost 17-9 with centre Keith Holland scoring the club’s first-ever try and fullback Brian Wiseman booting three goals. In 1964 Ryde-Eastwood were part of the re-named NSWRL Second Division competition that also included Wentworthville, Penrith, Cronulla-Caringbah, Kingsford, Guildford, Sydney University, Bankstown, Arncliffe Scots and Liverpool. The Hawks used Eastwood Oval as a home base and were again coached by Keith Aggett, who guided the club to their first Grand Final against Wentworthville on September 20, 1964 at McCreadie Park Guildford. Spearheaded by Welsh five-eighth wizard Lewis Jones - arguably one of the greatest goalkickers the game has produced - the Magpies recorded a 20-5 premiership triumph. Ryde-Eastwood Football Club remained a competitive force throughout the 60s in the NSWRL Second Division before dominating in the 70s and winning a swag of premierships in the Parramatta and Balmain ‘A Grade’ competitions during the 80s. When the NSWRL formed the Metropolitan Cup series in 1990 the Hawks claimed the inaugural first grade title and followed it up with a second premiership in 2000.

FIRST THE FOOTBALL CLUB... In fact it was on June 7, 1963 when Fred Fayers invited nine of his football colleagues to his West Ryde home with the aim of discussing the possibility of establishing a leagues club. Those in attendance were Messrs. Harry Quinlan, Keith Aggett, Sam Crawford, Ron Murphy, Bob Clayton, Mal Finigan, Joe Tanner, George Brown, Vince MacDougall and Fred Fayers.

1963, and at this meeting ten directors were elected. They were: President Fred Fayers, Vice President Harry Quinlan, Secretary Mal Finigan, Treasurer Bob Clayton, Assistant Treasurer Sam Crawford, with other Directors Keith Aggett, Joe Tanner, Ron Murphy, George Brown and Vince MacDougall forming the balance of the first 10 Directors of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club.

All these men were associated with the newly formed Ryde-Eastwood Rugby League Football Club, and it was agreed that to further develop rugby league in the Ryde-Eastwood area, a Board of Directors should be formed to determine and action the path to establishing a Leagues club. First requirement was establishing the bona fide of the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Solicitor Vincent Brady had been requested to supply a draft copy of the proposed club’s Certificate of Incorporation and the Memorandum and Articles of Association. These documents were received and discussed at the meeting of June 7, 1963.

There is little doubt that the ten directors, who were elected at this first meeting, were filled with confidence and expectancy. It seemed the opening of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues club was not all that far away and somewhat of a formality. There was justification for this feeling in that many clubs that preceded Ryde-Eastwood received their Liquor Licence in just one or two days. What these ten men had no way of knowing, of course, was that over seven years of frustration, disappointment, personal sacrifice and hard work lay ahead of them. It soon became evident during these difficult years that to achieve success then the human qualities needed were total dedication, strong determination and an absolute belief that they would succeed.

Another meeting of the proposed Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club was convened on August 20,

At the end of 1963 the club was building a good foundation for an application for a liquor licence. Although there were no club premises the club had 489 paid up members. Sometime later a significant breakthrough was made in obtaining a preliminary agreement for the short term use of a vacant factory in Ryedale Road, West Ryde. This factory was owned by Simpson Pope Limited, and was used in the manufacturing and distribution of electrical appliances. Prior to Simpson Pope acquiring this building it was owned by Holeproof Pty Ltd, which manufactured ladies apparel garments. The site and premises of this factory was quickly recognised as an ideal place to develop the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. That proved to be true and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club stands on this site today. 1964 saw the election of two new directors to the Leagues Club board. Les Hayes, who was on the original Football Club committee, and who would later become President, and Jack King (who is still on the Leagues Club board). October 1964 was an eventful month for the club as the first Liquor Licence application was lodged with the court; Ryde Council approved the development application; the club had secured a lease on the railway land opposite for the purpose of members’ parking, and the 1000th applicant was accepted as a member. This member was R.C. Cutler, the Mayor of Ryde Council. On November 22 1964 the club submitted its application to the NSW Licencing Court and was advised that the hearing would commence on February 2, 1965. Les Hayes was declared the Appellant in respect of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. The objectors were: The Local Inn Hotel, West Ryde; Ermington Club Hotel, Ermington;

2

Family Hotel, Rydalmere; Royal Hotel, Ryde; West Ryde Hotel, West Ryde; Eastwood Hotel, Eastwood and the District Licencing Inspector, Sergeant Nisbet. On February 2, 1965 the club’s first application was commenced in the Licencing Court in Sydney and was heard by Mr Kelly CLM, Mr Forrest LM and Mr Fitzmaurice LM. On May 14, 1965 the court reconvened to deliver the decision on the club’s application. All of the objections were found in the club’s favour (except technical matters on minor breaches of rules) and things were proceeding very well until the final words of the verdict decision. These words broadly were: “Although the applicant has proved that the need for the club is genuine and substantial, we find that the granting of registration to the club will result in undue competition and economic waste and we refuse the application on that ground.” After the bitter disappointment of the refusal of the application and time spent analysing the decision, the directors agreed that if they were to have their own Leagues Club they would have to fight on. In late March 1965, the club’s second application to the Licencing Court was submitted - however the actual hearing commenced on June 7 1965. The hearing lasted seven days and the decision was delivered by Mr T Ratcliffe LM on August 4, 1966. In his verdict Mr Ratcliffe stated that objections one and two were withdrawn by the objectors and three to eight were found in favour of the club. He stated: “In view of all the evidence I am satisfied that the need for the club does exist and it is genuine and substantial.” Mr Ratcliffe went on to relate the details of the poor profitability of the West Ryde Hotel, as presented during the hearing, and he finished by using objection nine to say, “the increase in such losses, should registration be granted to this club, is sufficient to sustain the ground of objection taken to the granting of this application, and I find that the granting of registration to the applicant will result in undue competition and economic waste and refuse the application on that ground.” After coming to terms with the severe blow of a second denial of a Certificate of Registration, the Board agreed they needed to fight on. All of the evidence and findings of the club’s first application had to be compiled by the presiding magistrate and then certified by all that were engaged in the hearing. This was done and the transcript was sent to the Supreme Court, and the hearing and decision was listed for June 1967. On June 29, 1967 Supreme Court Judge J. Isaacs held that there was no evidence on which Magistrate Ratcliffe could properly have

.. THEN THE LEAGUES CLUB made in the finding of undue competition and economic waste, and he upheld the appeal by the club. This decision was etched into the Liquor Laws as a reference point as: (Hayes v Metropolitan Lic.Inspector, Vol. 86 part 1 Weekly Notes P203). To say that the feeling at Ryde-Eastwood was ecstatic would be a great understatement. However, it was known and understood by the club that the objectors had the right to appeal against this decision, and this they did. On July 28, 1967, the objectors sought leave to appeal to the Court of Appeals. This was refused. On August 18, 1967 the objectors sought leave to appeal to the High Court of Australia. This was refused. On August 28 1967, the matter was referred back to Mr. Ratcliffe LM and he granted the Club’s application. On September 15, 1967 the objectors appealed to the full bench of the Licencing Court. The appeal was heard over 12 days from January 1968 right through to September 1968. On October 25, 1968 the Full Bench of the Licencing Court delivered judgement in which it refused to uphold the appeal. In October 1968 an appeal to the Supreme Court against this decision of the Full Bench was made by the objectors. This Appeal was not heard until May 30, 1969, and on that day the Presiding Judge, J. Brereton dismissed the appeal.

The Original Club House

One month later on June 30, 1969 the objectors sought leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal. On that day, June 30, the court refused Leave and dismissed the application. There remained only one more appeal available to the objectors and that was The Privy Council in England. At that time the Privy Council was Australia’s highest Appeal court. The objectors had until July 21, 1969 to make an appeal to the Privy Council. This never eventuated - RydeEastwood won! There has never been a Liquor Licence Application like Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, and most likely there never will be. In all battles there are always many silent heroes. Ryde-Eastwood’s silent heroes were the Directors that held office during the period from August 20 1963 to December 19, 1970.

Also worthy of mention is the significant contribution of those members who supported the club financially and with active participation as members, right through to the opening of the licensed club in 1970. Their loyalty throughout this period was key to the Club’s survival. The Foundation Members are listed on a plaque in the airlock of the foyer of the club as a permanent reminder of their contribution. The other major contributors to the survival of the club in its fledgling years were the numerous leagues clubs that helped finance the legal struggle. There were financial contributions from different clubs. However, of particular note was the support from Balmain Leagues Club, Easts Leagues, Souths, Souths Juniors, the NSW Leagues Club and also the NSWRL. Their support is fondly remembered by all those involved in the struggle. HALL OF FAME In 50 years, Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has only had four Presidents, all of whom were associated with the formation of both the Football Club and Leagues Club in 1963.

THE FOOTBALL CLUB 1972 was a year to rejoice for the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks capturing both the first grade and reserve grade premierships in the NSWRL Second Division competitions. Under the guidance of experienced captain-coach Laurie Fagan, the Hawks toppled traditional rivals Wentworthville 18-14 in the Grand Final at Cumberland Oval on September 17, 1972. Ryde-Eastwood’s premiership-winning 1972 first grade squad was: Dave Barsley, Reg Hatton, Harry Harris, Ernie Gillon, Allan Gill, Frank McGarry, Bob Stiff, Ron Raper (captain), Steve Nicholson, John Stapley, Brian Sullivan, Bobby Hayden, David Knox; Reserves: Jeff Waldie, George Junkiewicz, Jim Willding, Eddie King, Warwick Shakespeare, David Ross, Ron Storey. Ryde-Eastwood were crowned 1972 Reserve Grade champions after tossing St. Marys 15-9 at Cumberland Oval. Skippered by tough prop Peter Davies, the Hawks proved a slick outfit, winning 19 of their 23 matches and scoring 569 points while conceding a mere 138. Ryde-Eastwood’s champion 1972 Reserve Grade squad was: Eddie King, Jim Willding, Bob Storey, John Raikuna, John Jewiss, Ken Hogg, Keith Webber, Daryl Alexander, David Ross, Chris Royston, Dave Gummer, Allan Miller, Peter Davies (captain); Reserves: George Junkiewicz, Chris Ware, Jeff Waldie, Warren Shakespeare, Mick Grant, Dick Mulheron, Rick Russo. 1990 - GOLDEN YEAR FOR CHAMPION HAWKS Ryde-Eastwood stamped themselves as the undisputed kings of semi-professional football after slamming Hills District to lift the inaugural Metropolitan Cup on August 26, 1990 at Parramatta Stadium. The team was captained by former Kiwi international Olsen

4

www.releagues.com.au

Filipaina. Fellow Kiwi international half back, Clayton Friend, and ex-Balmain pivot Mick Campbell helped engineer the premiership triumph with super games. It was Ryde’s eighth consecutive title after previous Grand Final victories in the Parramatta and Balmain Junior Leagues, and their second trophy of the season after earlier clinching the Guildford Knockout Cup. The Hawks completed a unique trifecta when their crack youth outfit toppled St. Patricks Dundas 17-12 in the Balmain U/21Grand Final at Leichhardt Oval. 2000 - SECOND METRO CUP TITLE July 15, 2000 is a date forever etched in the mind of RydeEastwood’s Football Club players, coaches and administrators. It was the day the courageous Hawks won their second Metropolitan Cup first grade premiership title at Penrith Stadium. Ryde-Eastwood showed their champion qualities to outclass minor premiers St. Marys 24-10, and bring home the coveted trophy for the first time since 1990. Victory was sweet for coach Dave Nugent after the Hawks’ heart-breaking loss to Wentworthville in the 1999 Cup decider at Belmore Sports Ground. The final Metropolitan Cup was held in 2002 and the RydeEastwood Hawks were defeated in the Grand Final by the Sydney Bulls. In 2003, the NSWRL restructured the competition and launched the Jim Beam Cup which comprised Sydney Metropolitan clubs and also some Central Coast clubs. The Ryde-Eastwood Hawks competed in this competition in 2003 and 2004 but without success.

In 2005 the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks entered a joint venture with Balmain and formed the Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers to play in the NSW Premier League. This competition was changed to the NSW Cup in 2009.

RYDE-EASTWOOD HAWKS HONOUR ROLL

The Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers were a competitive force in this competition making the Grand Final in 2009 only to be defeated by a very strong Canterbury Bankstown team. The Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers also made the Grand Final in 2012, only to lose narrowly to Newtown. This was to be the last appearance of a Ryde-Eastwood named team in competitions. In 2013, Wests Tigers entered only one team in the NSW Cup under the Wests Tigers banner, which meant both Balmain and Ryde-Eastwood no longer had representation. Ryde-Eastwod District Rugby League Football Club is a major sponsor of the Wests Tigers’ State Cup and other Wests Tigers teams, as well as local junior rugby league clubs, and will continue to foster rugby league in the local district and the state.

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE FOR SENIORS Regular exercise is good for us but as we age we cannot workout with the same intensity, and the number of seniors exercising quickly declines. Research shows that regular exercise can reduce the likelihood of suffering heart attack, reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of Type II Diabetes. So what stops us from going to the gym and exercising? Studies show that people may feel old and out of place, or believe they might sustain an injury or even exacerbate a current injury. Most notably, many seniors don’t perceive exercise as a key component of their lifestyle.

Fitness Edge at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, is 72 and believes that seniors cannot afford NOT to exercise. Having worked as a Chartered Accountant, Michael taught himself to swim at 55 and quickly started to feel stronger and fitter. Having completed his exercise studies at Meadowbank TAFE, he now teaches Fit ‘n’ Well at the club, a 45-minute class for seniors who want to exercise at a lighter pace but still work on their strength, fitness and general wellbeing.

Michael Wilkinson, an instructor at The

social well-being. Regular exercise gives us this and much more. There are many achievable options for newcomers to exercise. The Fitness Edge delivers Aqua classes, Pilates, Yoga, and Stretch classes. If classes are not for you then by becoming a Fitness Edge member you are able to design your own fitness programme tailored to your abilities and needs, in conjunction with one of our exercise specialists. So, if you’re interested, why not pop down to the Fitness Edge and talk with Michael or one of our exercise professionals and find out how to get started.

The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are 6 months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification. Babies & Pre-school classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors in these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Pre-school Aquatics. School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our more serious swimmers move on to Mini-Squad and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, we also develop speed and racing skills. Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of new swimmers’ ability and available classes. Adult classes are held on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. We have two levels - Beginners and Intermediate. Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to swim with their faces in the water, and intermediate classes for members who can swim but want to improve their technique. For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617 or check out our webpage on the club’s website at: www.releagues.com.au. Our office hours during term time are: Monday – Friday: 10am – 6pm Saturday: 8am – 1.15pm

WELCOME TO OUR NEW COACH Hi, my name is Orlando, and you will have seen me around pool deck this term getting familiar with the operation of the swim school and getting to know all our swimmers. I come to the swim school with experience and knowledge in sports, especially swimming and soccer. I am hoping over time, in consultation with Leanne and Jo, that I will be able to share my knowledge and experience with all the staff, swimmers and families of the Fitness Edge, and help our swim school and swimmers consistently achieve their best. I am continually questioned by parents regarding suitable training parameters for individuals and groups of young swimmers. What should be the focus of training? How many sessions are appropriate? How many weeks per year should young swimmers train? Whilst there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers and no single formula applies in all cases, there are a number of recommendations that should be taken into account. As part of my role as swim programme development coach for Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, our swim school team wants to offer some guidance for parents and coaches/instructors regarding difficult training/teaching decisions. Training generally involves these broad based performance objectives: 1.

2. 3.

The acquisition of complex skills (i.e. such as tumble turns and racing start) that are specific to competition, rather than required for safety or recreational pursuits. Improvement in physical capacities that allow sustained swimming. Improvement in technical capabilities that allow more efficient propulsion in the water. Naturally, the achievement of these objectives means that a swimmer is able to move further, faster, and more skilfully.

We are in the process of reviewing our programme to see if we need to make any necessary changes to ensure we are catering to all our swimmers’ needs and helping them to achieve their potential. It is my aim to be available on pool deck to mentor, coach and develop all our swimmers and staff. Please do not hesitate to come and discuss your swimmer’s progress at any time, or any issues you may have. I look forward to meeting you all and helping your swimmers exceed their expectations whilst enjoying their swimming. Orlando AUGUST SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS CAMERA CLUB We’re already half way through the year and club members have shared images, experiences, knowledge and friendships. In May a group of enthusiastic shutter bugs travelled to the Goulburn Railway Museum to capture images of trains from a bygone era. To connect with these wonderful pieces of our history was a rare opportunity for members. We now look forward to seeing the images captured at our “Outings Exhibition”. Four of our Club members have shared their images and the stories behind each image. This has now proved to be a most enjoyable and informative evening. In the month just passed, we were given the opportunity to view some very interesting images where the photographer was the central character. The presentation was entitled “Shooting Yourself”. This provided an intriguing insight into another facet of the world of photography. We have competitions to present photographs of subjects we have a love and special interest in. We also have set subjects to photograph, which are designed to grow our photographic skills. In our June competition the subject’s focus was ‘Blurred Motion’. In this focus we were required to capture very fast action or motion images, a big challenge for us all. Members were treated to a vast array of visually exciting and interesting images. Our next set subject requires capturing photographs of Nature. Come and join us and share your photographs. To date, eight new members are sharing their photographs and friendship with us. And there is always a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits provided for us by Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. A big thank you to the club for these refreshments, always most gratefully enjoyed. You can find out more about out club and its activities at – www.pbase.com/relccc John Maynard CHESS CLUB The Club Championship preliminaries are almost complete, and the following players will be contesting the finals starting in October: Arthur Huynh, Lorenzo Escalante, Frank Pacey, Rob Watson, Chris Ball and either Egon Cardenas or Greig Edwards (tied: playoff required for qualification). The handicap winners in the three divisions were: Group A – Vince Chiara; Group B – Greig Edwards or Paul Gluvchinsky; Group C – Shane Dibley, Alan Marton and James Jickey. The interclub grade matches are well underway. RydeEastwood has entered four teams this year across the three divisions: U2000, U1700 and two in U1500. Both U1500 teams have progressed to the second round in which the top four teams (out of eight) play each other again. The club’s blitz championship (5 minute time limit) will be held in the first two weeks of August. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot. com. Contact Les Mikolajcsyk (0412 970 059) or Rob Watson (0408 463 759). EUCHRE CLUB Although membership continues to increase, there are still vacancies for experienced Euchre players to come along on Wednesday evenings at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room in the function centre, and join in our card games. We play 16 games of competition euchre with prizes for 1st and 2nd for both men and ladies. Members enjoy a light supper at the end of the evening. Congratulations to our monthly winners: April - 1st place Margaret Campbell , 2nd place to Ivy Hitchens, Aileen Wheeler and Jim Marshall, and 3rd place to Barry Ratcliffe. May: 1st place John King, 2nd place Vince Smith, and 3rd place to Bede Bendeich and John Wicks. June: 1st place John King, 2nd place to Vince Smith, and 3rd place to Dorothy Coffill and Mary Samany. THE FISHING CLUB This year we have missed three outings due to bad weather. A turnaround started in May with everyone on board catching fish, in fact 43.7kg to be exact. Master fisherman, Michael Cheng, caught the heaviest bag at 7.2kg. The June outing was not as good weather wise, being cool and wet. Everyone on board caught fish, with some more than others. Gary Lee caught 7.7kg out of the total of 31.2kg for the boat, which was a good effort. With warmer weather on the way, hopefully we will have even more success. Upcoming outings are scheduled for: Sunday 4th August, Sunday 1st September, Sunday 6th October, Sunday 3rd November. The fishing club organises monthly deepsea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested member may contact Nic Ceh on 9858 2412 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month, at 8pm. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey. GOLF CLUB Blackheath in early April was beautiful. It must have been the first time that everyone didn’t freeze their toes off. Medals on the day were awarded to A-Grade, Steve Ferns and B-Grade, John Nilan. The runner-up on the day was Tony Tedesco. Round 1 of Matchplay was at Massey Park; congratulations to all that progressed to round 2. On the day winners were: Tony Campbell (A-Grade) and Slava Sokolov (B-Grade). Our runners-up were Greg Webber on count back (A-Grade) and Eric Tsui on count back (B-Grade). Lynwood, true to form, seemed to swallow numerous golf balls. Congratulations to Henry Urbanski (A-Grade), the winner from Robert Wood. In B-Grade John Nilan was obviously on a different golf course to the rest of the field with a net 67 from Slava Sokoloff, who was 10 strokes behind. Round 2 of the match play was decided and round 3 will be a tussle between Slava and Tony C., and Steve J. and Edwin for the finals. Medals at Dunheved were awarded to Steve Ferns, A-Grade (Miss Judy will love another dust collector), and Alex Sokolov, B-Grade. Next best on the day were Greg Webber, A-Grade (keeping the prizes in the family), and Kaye Henderson in B-Grade. Unfortunately the Maris/ Busher Cup at Massey Park was a washout. Glenmore Park was round 3 of the Stableford Trophy. It appears that not everyone was happy to be back at Glenmore, with some very low scores. However the winners on the day didn’t seem to struggle with the course: Alan Henderson, A-Grade, and Eric Goh, B-Grade. Runners up were John Nilan, A-Grade, and Natalie P in B-Grade. It was great to see the Perederienkos back at golf even if they did win half the prizes. After all the rain in the last week of June, 15 members braved Richmond for a medal round. Congratulations go to Rick Beves, A-Grade and Steve Jeffery B-Grade. John Nilan was the runner-up for the day. Don’t forget to check the website for full results: www.relgolfclub.com. Good golfing til next time! INDOOR BOWLS Congratulations to Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club members selected in the NSW team to play in the Australian Championships in Twoomba, Queensland. Claire Grebert, Jim Harvey, Bob Bale, Jeffrey Tam, Jenny Loveridge, Ron Asser, Michael Wookey, Michael Andersch and Doreen Anderson. Good Luck. Club players won medals in the metropolitan championships: Jim Harvey, Cath Lyn, Sandy Tam, Lynda Bale, Bob Bale, Doreen Anderson, John Loveridge, Kerri Lane, Michael Andersch, Jacqui Myles, David Myles and Michael Wookey. We are having a good year. Our Christmas in July lunch was a great success. We thank Mr Jack King for his patronage and attendance at our functions throughout the year. The club is always open to new members, and players new to the game will be given tuition. Ladies games

are played from 10.30am to 2.00pm on Wednesdays, and mixed games at 7.30pm on Thursdays. Enquiries welcome. Phone Narelle on 9802 7688 or Cath on 0413 600 019. SENIORS CLUB The first half of the year has already gone but our members are still enjoying the meetings and outings. Marie has had the operation on her knees and all is going well. We wish her all the best and look forward to seeing her soon. Last month we had a trip to Mt. Penang. The weather wasn’t the best but everyone enjoyed the day. This month we went to Gabbies at Berry for our ‘Christmas in July’ lunch. We were pleased to see so many wishing to go, so we hired an extra bus. Father’s Day is coming up and we hope to get a good turn out. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 11.00am. For more information please contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419. SQUASH CLUB We have just completed our Autumn Competition for 2013. In this comp we had three teams competing, a Div 4 (6th), Div 7 (1st) and Div 8 (4th). I am pleased to report WE HAVE WON ANOTHER PENNANT! Well done Div7, to Joe Morrissey, Trevor Lunney, Glenn Bridge, Joe Son Kee and Bill Schenk. These guys were Premiers in this comp and also won the Pennant, a truly magnificent effort. Well done to all the guys. Just a quick reminder to all players that this year the internal club championship round robin will be played at the completion of the autumn competition, so get your games played. This is held once a year and is a great chance to play against better players, so time to get involved. On a social note, one of our players, Peter Sklavos, will be heading off to Italy to compete in the World Masters Games in Turin in the next few weeks. The World Masters Games are held every four years and were last held in Sydney in 2009. These Games are for competitors aged 35 – 100+ with a passion for sport, competing in 32 core sports. Peter will competing in the 64 years category, we wish Peter the very best of luck. Bring home ‘the bacon’ Peter.
