PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Member Hi to all in our Ryde-Eastwood family. I hope 2019 is shaping up well for you all. The Board has been very busy both in maintaining the present success of the club and future-proofing it for the journey ahead. With the appointment of Carl Pozzato as CEO and Nicole Hendley as Operations Manager, and me as a relatively new President, the Board realises that we have quite a job in front of us to maintain the club’s current success. We look forward to the challenge and indeed will be doing our best to not only maintain the high standards but also exceed them and provide even more value for you, the member as part of our Ryde-Eastwood family. As such, I would like to bring you “up to speed” on some matters we are dealing with at the moment. Seniors living proposal We are still awaiting feedback and further consultation from Council on the project to ensure the best outcome for the community. We will then be able to better plan this project and inform members on the process. Purchase of surrounding laneway This is still in the hands of Council, but there is a general agreement in proceeding. This is an important part of our master planning process for the club and will at some stage include the changing of services (water and gas mains, and drainage lines etc.) in the planning. This will, of course, let us change the footprint of the existing building, hence allowing for some exciting new proposals. Drought relief I recently met with Wayne Thomson, the General Manager of Drought Rural Aid, and received a plaque thanking us for our donation to the cause. He did not “sugar coat” the problems they face and told us about how on a number of occasions he personally had to talk over the phone to a farmer in distress who was facing some very problematic life decisions. As a pastor in the past, he was successful in his talks. I am proud to announce that on your behalf, the Board has also committed to donating $20,000 for immediate relief to the New England District; and in conjunction with the Bingara Local Lions Club, we will also be donating vouchers to each of the 142 farming families to spend in town, which will help the entire community affected by the drought. Investing in our future I recently attended the launch of our Ryde-Eastwood Rugby League teams and the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA). Sometimes people of my generation hear of negativity in the young ones coming through and compare their days with today. I can only speak of those in our Ryde-Eastwood family with whom I come into contact, and I am simply overawed by the quality of these young people. Your club, in conjunction with the above clubs, have undertaken sponsorship of wellness and respect courses for our young ones, both male and female, and the feedback I have received from those who attended has been great. The Board sees this sponsorship as a gift to our community, for these young ones represent our future. We have also decided to share social media points with ERNA, as well as our sponsored rugby league clubs - Holy Cross, North Ryde, St. Patricks Dundas and Carlingford Cougars, which provides another demographic to our diversified club. As I have stated previously, observing our learn-to-swim classes, these young ones could possibly become our future members, Board, management or even President. I believe the future of Ryde-Eastwood will be in good hands. Thank you one and all, and don’t forget to tell your family and friends the value of being a member of the Ryde-Eastwood family. See you in the club. James (Jim) McClymont President

Dear Member Welcome to our second edition of the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club Report for 2019. RYDE-EASTWOOD COMBINED RUGBY LEAGUE SYDNEY SHIELD Our Sydney Shield Competition kicked off on 16th March against Baulkham Hills Rugby League Club, which we lost 30-16. We were competitive throughout most of the game, but around the 60th minute mark our match fitness let us down and, unfortunately, we were run down, hence the above-mentioned score. Our second game of this season was on 23rd March against St Marys Rugby League Club; again a similar result but this was a far more competitive opponent and the final score was 40-18. Our third game was against Moorebank Rams Rugby League Club, where every one of our players turned up to play, a much better performance from all players, and we ran out winners at 44-6. Our fourth round which at the time of writing will be on 7th April, against the 2018 season premiers, East Campbelltown, and this will be a stronger test and thus give us a guide on the improvement of our players and team to date. Brody Temora, one of our club’s past Juniors is now playing for the New Zealand Warriors 1st Grade NRL Team. Congratulations Brody. This is the pathway that we are creating at Ryde-Eastwood, for our younger players to progress and realise their dreams and the opportunity to play in the NRL. Our 2019 Season Launch was held on Saturday 30th March, which was a huge success and well attended. As always, we invite all family and friends to join us at the game to support our players. Also, throughout the season there will be some after-game functions where we again invite our players, their families and friends to Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club to enjoy our successes. Until next time, watch this space. Remember that the RydeEastwood Rugby League Club is the Family Club. COMMUNITY NEWS Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Donates Hay to Farmers Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club recognises that droughtaffected NSW farming communities have been doing it really tough lately. Therefore, the club decided to lend its support to their cause by working with Rural Aid Australia to coordinate the first of two hay drop donations. The destination for the first hay drop was Pallal, located five minutes south west of Bingara in the New England region. On Sunday 13 January the first two trailer loads of hay were delivered to local Pallal farmers Georgie and Bruce Butler, who then dispersed the 1,500 kilograms of hay to six other local farms in the region. Ryde-Eastwood CEO, Carl Pozzato said, “The drought has caused so many issues for those affected, including tough decisions on livestock and caring for sick animals, a lack of feed sources, not to mention the effect on families and the wider community.” Every hay bale counts and the club’s initial $25,000 contribution, including all transportation costs, saw local farmers receive approximately eleven bales of hay each. Club President, Jim McClymont says, “I think it’s really important for clubs like Ryde-Eastwood to get behind the cause of helping the farmers in their time of need. The club has committed to further donations in support of the farmers and hopefully our contribution will help ease the plight faced by those drought-affected communities.” Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has worked closely in tandem with charity organisation Rural Aid Australia, which was founded in 2015 to provide a central point of focus for rural communities who require assistance. The club is also currently reviewing other initiatives to support the New England North West communities.

Aqua-babies and water-babies are more than just a splash, fun and social class for babies and toddlers from six months to three years old. The benefits of the courses are multifaceted, providing water safety training, as well as encouraging physical, social and psychological development. In addition, the courses enhance awareness, improve sleeping and eating patterns and strengthen cardio respiratory functions. For over 15 years, we have been teaching young babies and toddlers in Sydney to swim. Our key focus is to teach parents and carers the correct method of teaching their child to swim. We teach basic water safety and confidence techniques and use nursery songs in our toddler classes to engage the children and provide positive associations with swimming.

INTERNAL CLUBS CAMERA CLUB 2019 is shaping up to become a great year for our club. It started with the exhibition of our members’ images displayed in the Leagues Club Foyer. We had a lot of interest in our images from the exhibition and with that came a number of new members joining our club. Our first Club Outing for 2019 was to Taralga near Goulburn for the Rodeo. We have already seen a number of images that our members have taken on the day and they are great. A great time was had by all. You can view our images on the website at www.pbase.com/relccc . We meet in the Willandra Room every 2nd & 4th Monday from February to November. Come along and check out this friendly club as our guest. Bob Stephenson 0448 615 841. CHESS CLUB The club’s 48th annual general meeting was held on Wednesday 6 February, and the following officers were elected for 2019: President – Les Mikolajczyk; Vicepresident – Bill Gletsos; Treasurer – Mohan Pagadala; Secretary – Rob Watson. In February we held our annual Rapid Championship tournament (20 minutes with a 10-second increment), which was won by Donato Mallari on with a perfect score of 9/9, two points clear of Ricardo Atanacio in second place and three points ahead of Arthur Huynh, Mohan Pagadala and Chris Ball in third. The U1600 division was won by Ben Sindell on 5½/9 with Kevin Chan second on 5/9. The Club Championship Preliminary round-robin tournament has started and after 5 rounds has the following leaders: Group A – Arthur Huynh and Suranga Seneviratne (5/5) and Rob Watson (4/4); Group B – Donato Mallari (4/4); Group C – Chris Ball and Ben Sindell (4/4) and Norm Greenwood (3/4). As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www. rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Sam Sundar was the winner of the L J Hayes trophy for the third year in a row with a 26kg bag of eatable fish. Congratulations to Sam for a hat trick. Not too sure if it is the same as cricket. Our first outing for 2019 was in February with a full crew of 14 attending. Conditions were good - only four drifts were needed. Sam Sundar was the winner of the day with over 20 fish weighing 13.3kg. The biggest fish was caught by

24

Winnnie Lo, a 1.83kg teraglin. The March trip was met with poor weather with a 1.5 metre swell and choppy seas causing many tangles. Sam was the heaviest bag winner with 8.3kg of a good mix of species, and the biggest fish was a 1.8kg morwong caught by Winston Foo. The fishing club organizes monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any club member interest in joining us should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of every month at 8pm (except December). Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey. GOLF CLUB The first game for 2019 was at Fox Hills on a warm Sunday morning, with Robert Wood narrowly beating Steve Ferns. Cabramatta hosted the first round of the Stableford Trophy and Frank Vetrisano has given the rest of the field a score to chase winning with 46 points followed by Fernando runner-up 5 points behind. First medal was played at Richmond with Fernsy taking our A grade and Sharon B grade, runner-up on the day was Tony T. Lynwood hosted the second round of the Stableford Trophy with Valery P beating Tony Tedesco. Windsor was the qualifier for Matchplay and a medal, with a small field everyone qualified, winners on the day were Tony Tedesco and Colin Cope and Ulla Wood runner-up. Glenmore was a wet day but a few brave souls ventured out and the winner was Fernsy (who had to get rid of his shoes after the game) and runner-up Slava S. Fox Hills was the first round of Matchplay with Tony T winning with a bye, Warren beat Colin, Ulla beat John and Robert beat Slava – good luck to all in the next round. Winner on the day was Tony T and runner-up Fernsy. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com and follow us on Facebook. If any new members would like to join us on a Sunday morning please email regolfclub@optusnet. com.au for more details. Our monthly walks around Sydney and beyond are proving very popular. This year we are holding Mother’s Day lunch in the Bistro at the club – thank you Sidney. Our annual fees are only $5 a year and for more information concerning the Seniors Club please contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Hello to all. Since our last update we have held our Annual General Meeting on the 7th February. Details from that meeting are: Elected members: President:

Brenda Paterson. Vice-President: Ray McDonnell. Secretary: Maria Armstrong. Treasurer: John Dixon. Social Secretary; Patricia Stewart. Committee members: Milly Farrell, Helen McClure, Robyn Newton, Elizabeth Bell and Elvie Craven. Our first trip of the year was on 17th February. We went to Towradgi Bowling club, where we had a lovely lunch which we thoroughly enjoyed and chatted happily to the members. The second trip will be on Sunday 5 May when we are off to Umina Bowling Club; we had to postpone our original trip in April as they have a Pennants day scheduled and could not fit us in. I am sure we will have had a great day as we always enjoy our time at their club. Then on 16 June we were going to Picton Bowling Club, where we also have a good time. The bus leaves at 9.30am from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, and as the saying goes, “The more the merrier”. Hopefully all our members who were previously ill have recovered and can join us once again. Also hoping everyone had a great Easter and trusting that the Easter bunny found you all. For further information please contact Patricia Stewart 9743 3032 or Robyn Newton 9858 3014 or Milly Farrell 9874 4667. TRAVEL CLUB Since New Year we have had a great day sailing the Hawkesbury in a Paddle Wheeler. Weather was great as was the company. It`s a part of the river we hadn’t been to and was very interesting. Especially the entertainment which was very humorous. March was a change of pace; we held the AGM and all positions were filled. some members needed encouragement, but all was successfully concluded. Now we settle down to some work and play. Also in the month we had a tour of the “Lifestyles of Leichhardt” and bordering Suburbs. All thought the day was very interesting in which we saw homes of the rich of the past. The homes were magnificent and are kept in good condition tucked away in the back streets of those suburbs. Lunch was at the Massey Park Golf Club, a nice meal enjoyed by all. In April we have planned a trip to Bundeena and the National Park. Looking forward to a peaceful sail around the bays of Port Hacking and The National Park, and of course finishing off with a tasty lunch at the local RSL. May – the month we celebrate “Mum”. A lovely lunch is awaiting us in the Golden Hawk Restaurant. That’s a special day!

BRIDGE CLUB

We have been conducting a walk-in duplicate each Monday commencing at 12.45pm and Tuesday night from 7.30pm since 1980. All bridge playing club members are welcome to join us.
