PRESIDENT’S REPORT

FOOTBALL REPORT

Dear Member To all our Ryde-Eastwood family, I wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year and may the great times we have had at our Club in 2018 continue in 2019. Our AGM was again successful and I will take the small number of attendees as a compliment to the smooth running of our Club. I attended many Christmas functions with our internal clubs, including the Camera Club, Golf Club, Football Club, and Travel Club to name a few, and I am very proud of the standing of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club in our local community. The reason I feel so proud is because of the broad spectrum of people I see in our Club, from the very young ones in the swimming classes, the fit young people in the netball and rugby league football teams we support, the members of our very active internal clubs, the super active people in our gym, the people of my vintage who may be dancing or participating in managed exercise classes or the members who just want a clean, modern, safe environment to eat and be entertained at, all demonstrates to me the value of the Ryde-Eastwood family to our community. Having had a successful year I apologised to partners and families of Directors and senior staff for the many hours we have taken them away from their families. Unfortunately, I could not promise that this year would be easier with the planning proposal for the seniors’ living project continuing to progress. This, together with the intended purchase of the laneway surrounding the Club, will change the “footprint” of our future Club and will no doubt involve many more meetings and planning reviews to maximise the Club’s resources. The Board is aware that, as Directors, our role is to give “direction” for the futureproofing of our Club in line with advice from the Club Industry that we cannot rely as heavily on income from poker machines in the future. We, as current Directors, must focus on what’s ahead and give direction for what is beyond us today. We must diversify and at the same time continue to be a major community asset by keeping the spirit of the Ryde-Eastwood family alive and well. Again, many thanks to all of you in the Ryde-Eastwood family. Your continued patronage enables your Club to continue to take pride of place in our community. It would be remiss of me not to say another farewell and a great big thank you to Chris McCarthy, our CEO, who is retiring after 25 years’ faithful service to Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. We know we will miss Chris with his incredible work ethic and attention to detail. But we continue to move forward and welcome Carl Pozzato as our new CEO. Carl has been part of our succession planning for some time now, and we also extend our welcome to Nicole Hendley, our new Operations Manager, who comes to RydeEastwood Leagues Club with vast experience in the club industry. I understand more than most Carl’s position of filling the shoes of an icon in our industry, having myself taken over after Keith Aggett. As I have noted to Carl, we cannot immediately fill those shoes but when we eventually go, if we leave our great Club in an even greater position, then we have fulfilled our members’ wishes. We are all looking forward to the busy but exciting times ahead. Thank you all once again. “See you in the Club”.

Welcome to our first edition of the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club Report for 2019. RYDE-EASTWOOD COMBINED RUGBY LEAGUE As previously mentioned we will be fielding seven sides comprising one Women’s team, two U18’s, two U20’s, one U23’s and one Sydney Shield team. A lot of expressions of interest have been received for our Sydney Shield and our U23’s with eight contracts having been signed for our Sydney Shield team. Training commenced in mid-December for our Sydney Shield Side and then recommenced mid-January, with training for our other teams also commencing at that time. The New South Wales Rugby League has organised trials for our Sydney Shield side for Saturday 23 February and Saturday 2 March, 2019. The time and venue for these trials are to be advised. With the addition of our two extra teams, this has created a lot of interest throughout the district. We are looking forward to an exciting 2019 season. The following coaches have agreed to coach in the 2019 season: Walter Wilson is our Sydney Shield Coach who comes highly recommended from New Zealand, having won the coach of the year in 2018 in their National Championships. Lee Malkoun returns and will coach our Under 23’s team. Michael Abdennour has come to us via a premiership winning Holy Cross team. Michael is currently assistant coach of the North Sydney Bears SG Ball side. He will coach our U20’s Division 1 team. Louie Rizk returns and will again coach our U18’s Division 1 team. At this stage three teams await appointment of their coach our Women’s team, U18’s Division 2 and U20’s Division 2. We have expressions of interest for these coaching positions and we will advise all final decisions accordingly. I would like to express our ongoing gratitude to our major sponsors including Radray Group and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club who have again agreed to back our teams for the 2019 season. We would also like to thank the following sponsors who are also supporting our 2019 season: Gold Crest Security, Cook’s Plumbing Supplies, Ryan Wilks Pty Ltd, Bendigo Bank, Thai Na Box and ISC for supplying our on-field and off-field team apparel. We are very excited and look forward to our 2019 Rugby League season. We again remind you that all game times and venues will be displayed throughout the Club. We invite all family and friends to join us at the game to support our players, and throughout the season there will be some after game functions where we invite players, families, and friends to Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club to enjoy our successes. It would be prudent of me to highlight and also thank Michael Frain and Richard Kelly for their off-season work in getting season 2019 up and running for our Football Club. Be aware, and watch this space. Remember that Ryde-Eastwood Rugby League Club is the ‘Family Club’. MALCOM CHAPPLE - PRESIDENT Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club.

SPORTING NEWS

ERNA HAWKS READY FOR SEASON 2019

Photos courtesy of Pete Kenny Photography at Framing Life @ Boronia Park.

After an exciting but disappointing end to the 2018 season, the ERNA Hawks are keenly preparing for 2019 and trying to go one step further and winning the competition. The Netball NSW Premier League has made a slight change to the format of the two teams this year; there will be an Opens and U23 team in 2019. Increasing the age limit to U23, the Hawks have been able to pick up some exciting new talent to join its ranks. Both Hawks teams are a blend of experience and youth. Every Opens team member has represented NSW during their career and more than half of the U23s are currently in a state team. Hawks local, Kiera Austin, has again been signed with the GIANTS Netball franchise in Australia’s elite Suncorp Super Netball League. Kiera also represented Australia in the October World Championship of netballs exciting Fast5 – netball’s equivalent to cricket’s 20/20. Re-joining the Hawks is Swifts’ training partner and temporary player Sophie Halpin, bringing great experience to our defence end. Also joining us this year for the first time will be Swifts’ player Claire O’Brien. Two players moving up into the Opens team are NSW Waratah players Sophie Dwyer and Olivia Coleman – it’s exciting to see two young players moving into the Opens team. Also in both the Hawks and NSW Waratahs teams are Nicole Styles and Alison Miller. During the pre-season Taylah Davies was selected to play in the Women’s AFL competition for the GIANTS and we look forward to seeing her in AFL action as well as on the netball court. Also returning to the Hawks Opens team for 2019 are Ebony Burnard, Emily Bills, Georgia Marshall, Jessica Grant and Veronika Jukic, along with team officials Jen Wright, Sandy Attard and Di Bills. The Hawks U23 team is an exciting new look team with returning players Chelsea Loughrey, Rhiannon Stokes (NSW U19), Alisha Cairns and Dellilah Koli. Joining them will be new NSW U19 state team player Leilani Rohweder and NSW Talent Squad players Anastasia Afoa, Hannah Cullen and Laura Cook. Making up the rest of the team are Anaseini Nauqe, Catherine Tevaga, Levana Wayne-Boyle and Monique Clifton. Leading the team again in 2019 is the coaching staff of Jenni Webster, Rachel Lenaz and Debra Hanson.

Win tickets to the Netball Register your name at club reception from 4 February for the chance to win tickets to cheer on the ERNA HAWKS in a Premier League game. There will also be a chance to win one of 4 Family Passes to see the following Suncorp Super Netball League games at Qudos Bank Arena SOP. 2019 SUNCORP SUPER NETBALL Round 6, on Sunday 2 June at Qudos Bank Arena. Swifts v Magpies at 1pm GIANTS v Thunderbirds at 3pm So don’t forget to put your name down or you could miss out! For your chance to win the family passes above, simply register your name at Club reception from 4 February. Names will be drawn on a ballot basis, with all winners being notified via phone one week before the games. Winners need not be present. LTPM/18/03395 These are Members Only promotions.

While children are capable of being independently mobile in the water from a very young age, they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown-proof”. Laurie Lawrence. The Fitness Edge Swim School recommends that parents and carers take the following precautions to reduce the risk of childhood drowning: We support Laurie Lawrence’s “Kids Alive Do the 5” 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are 6 months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming.

All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification. Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 12.30pm. There are limited Preschool positions on Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Preschool Aquatics. School Age Learn to Swim classes are by far the most popular, with Term 1 - 2019 booked out. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our more serious swimmers move on to our stroke correction classes mastering breast stroke and butterfly, and then onto Pre-Squad and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, speed and racing skills are also developed. Adult classes are held on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings. We have 2 levels - Beginners and Intermediate. (Saturday only). Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to swim with their faces in the water, and intermediate classes for members who can swim but want to improve their technique. Generally, The Fitness Edge Swim School operates within the Public School term. We do hold lessons on Pupil Free days, but not on Public Holidays. During School Holidays we offer an Intensive Swim Programme for our students currently in the programme. These programmes are very beneficial and often result in a surge of aquatic progress. For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617. Our office hours are: Mon – Fri: 10am – 6pm & Sat: 8am – 1pm.
