PRESIDENT’S REPORT

WESTS TIGERS STATE CUP RUGBY LEAGUE

Dear Member, By the time you read this report, many important events will have occurred. Firstly, I hope that all of our senior members had a pleasant seniors’ week and they were able to partake in all the various events that were organised by the Club. April, as always, is a most important month of the Calendar for all members, with Easter at the top of the list. I hope that the “Easter Bunny” arrived for all of our young ones. This year is the 100th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915 by Australian and New Zealand troops (The ANZACS), and this date marks the sacrifice made in the campaign by the youth of our two Nations. One can only hope that their sacrifice will forever be remembered by all future generations.

The 2015 Season is well underway and the Wests Tigers State Cup team has started very well with three wins and two close losses in their first five matches to date. Paul Fletcher is again coaching the team and as always the composition of the team from week to week is subject to whichever injuries and suspensions occur in the NRL squad over the season. We hope that 2015 will not be a repeat of the 2014 Season, during which the NRL team suffered major setbacks through these occurrences with a flow-on effect to the State Cup team. Results to date are as follows:-

“Lest We Forget” On the Industry front, the State Elections are now behind us and we hope that the incoming Liberal / National Government continue to offer support for our Industry. Only time will tell on this matter. On the Club front, your Board and management are progressing with our future development master planning, and are confident that these plans will place our Club in a strong position in the coming years. As stated in previous journals, details of these development options will be released when they come to hand. The Club is trading above budget at this time and should post a very solid profit for this financial year, ending 30th June. Of course, these results are only possible through the continued support of you, the Member, and again on behalf of the Board, management and staff may I thank you for this support.

INTERNAL CLUBS CAMERA CLUB With our first two Open Competitions completed, we have viewed many and varied images presented by our members. At our March Presentation night, we were shown just what can be done with a plastic camera and a roll of film. Members were amazed at the quality and magic of the images Shown. Our April Presentation night was a treat to the wonders of Nature photography. Roy Killen, a highly respected Nature photographer, shared with members his insights and experiences in this wonderful field of photography. On the 18th April we held a bus trip for members and their friends to visit, explore and photograph the wonderful gardens and nature treats of Mount Wilson. We are very fortunate to have members who share with the club their skills in digital photo manipulation. These club members organise and run digital workshops which enrich members’ knowledge and expertise in the field of image enhancement. If you would like to be a part of these experiences, come and join us. We thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and its directors for their ongoing support and especially for the refreshments that they so kindly provide for us at each of our Committee meetings and Monday night meetings. You can find out more about out club and its’ activities at – www.pbase.com/relccc John Maynard CHESS CLUB The club’s 44th annual general meeting was held on Wednesday 28th January and the following officers were elected for 2015: President – Les Mikolajczyk; Vicepresident – Bill Gletsos; Treasurer – Greig Edwards; Secretary – Rob Watson. Aces up, Maria Lea THE FISHING CLUB The Fishing Club annual presentation dinner was held on the 20th March 2015 in the Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant, with 30 members and their partners in attendance. Our Fishing Club Patron and Club President, Keith Aggett and his wife Beryl were present with Keith presenting both the Keith Aggett Trophy for biggest fish and L.J. Hayes Trophy for the most fish caught for the year, both going to Garry Lee. Gary’s biggest fish was a 3.2kg Snapper and a total catch for the year of 55.5kg. The runner up for the year was Michael Cheng with a 2.18kg Morwong and 49.2kg of edible fish. The last two outings have had good weather and smooth seas but have failed to produce a good catch caused by the lack of drift and many tangles

18

but with the winter approaching fishing will improve if not the weather. The fishing club organises monthly deepsea charter boats fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Michael Cheng on 0449 518 357 or attend the monthly fishing club meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey. GOLF CLUB Another year has started and our first game was a nice warm morning at Dunheved. Congratulations to TTT our A-grade winner with Greg Webber runner-up. B-grade went to Edwin Kwong with a massive 44 points – chop chop from the Handicapper, runner-up on the day was Billy Chick. Special mention must be made for Slava who had an eagle on the par 4 10th hole out of the trees with a four iron – spectacular! The first medal round was at Penrith, congratulations to Greg Webber winning A-grade and Peter Lau in B-grade. Runner Up prizes were awarded TC A-grade and Eric Goh have a Go in B grade. Round 1 of the stableford trophy at Fox Hills saw Greg Webber in the winner’s circle again with Ulla Wood runner-up. B-grade winner on the day was the ever consistent Natalia P and Eric Goh have a Go runner-up again. Lynwood was a Team event in which Yuri had two bites of the cherry and managed to win with TC and come runner-up with Greg Webber. Richmond was a medal round and congratulations to Tiger in A-grade and Slava in B-Grade. Good luck to the top 16 who qualified for Matchplay. On our new course our winner on the day was Valery P on count back from Robert Wood. The first round of matchplay was contested at Cabramatta, congratulations to the eight going through to round 2. On the day A-grade was a family affair with the Woodies taking out winner and runner-up prizes. The eagles nest nearly went off, but unfortunately Robert missed it by 2 centimetres! B-grade welcomes back Dave Whybro who won the day with a massive 43 points and runner-up was Eric Goh. Happy golfing til next time. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com Annika INDOOR BOWLS At the 2015 AGM the following members were elected to the Committee; Claire Grebert (President), Narelle Waldock (Vice-President), Catherine Lynn (Secretary/ Treasurer), Olive Meredith, Judy Harris, Anne Sim, Janet Boyd, Marie Munce, Shirley Roberston, Jim Harvey and John Trost. We welcome the new committee and thank previous committee members who did not stand for reelection. Several of our members continue to compete regularly in State and Pennant competitions and we wish them well. The Thursday night bowlers recently joined with committee members to enjoy a pleasant meal in the dining room. Thank you to Sidney and his staff. We always welcome mew members, who can “try out” at the ladies games on Wednesdays 10.30am – 2pm or mixed Thursday nights 7pm – 10pm. “Flat” shoes (no heels). Enquiries, phone Cath on 0413 600 019 or Narelle on 8065 9284 SENIORS CLUB 2015 appears to be racing by faster than ever or is it that we are getting a little older? The Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Seniors’ Club has had a very busy few months and our Annual General Meeting in February was well attended with the incumbent Committee again elected unopposed. Thank you to all who voted. In March we had a very successful St. Patrick’s Day lunch at the Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters, with fine food, good company and great entertainment. We hope to return to Waterview for our “Christmas in July” celebrations. We had a lovely trip around the Harbour in April and we look forward to upcoming bus trips over the next three months (two of those being guided tours), which are always popular as we learn the history of the venues and visit places where even our most travelled members have not been before. Our annual Tafe Lunch is booked for May. Walks are on the first Monday every month and Solo (cards) every Thursday starting at 1.30pm. Our meeting days are the first and third Thursday of each month, held in the Function Rooms at the Club and our membership fee for the year is only $5,

so come along and join us. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419. SQUASH CLUB The start of 2015 heralded the RELSC AGM – a hot event in the calendar of all club squash players. Congratulations to the following club members on their appointments for 2015: Ernie Speed (President), Bev Speed (Secretary) and John Stapley (Treasurer). It is pleasing to note that in today’s current financial climate, where a number of squash courts are either for sale or are closing down (due to the high value of the property on which they stand), the RELSC squash club has not only maintained player registrations but has been able to increase the number of teams registered with NSW Squash by one. Current results (round 3), sees the Division 5 team dominating their opponents and consequently in 1st place, the Division 4 team holding steady in 5th place (but with amazing potential to launch a sneak attack on the top 4 teams), and the Division 6 team’s unwavering enthusiasm not yet smothered by their last place positioning. With another 11 rounds to go though, there is still ample time for all of the teams to stamp their claim on 1st position, in their respective grades. As always, the squash club is constantly looking for any squash players who are interested in playing competitively (regardless of gender, experience or skill level). If this is you, please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. And on a lighter note - what is Godzilla’s favourite vegetable? Squash! TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Hello to all, Since our last update we have held our Annual General Meeting in February 2015. Details from that meeting are: Marie Crawley resigned as President. We would like to thank Marie for all her hard work and organising that she has done over the years for the Travelling Bowlers and we wish her well in her retirement. New elected members: President: Brenda Paterson. VicePresident: Ray McDonnell. Secretary: Maria Armstrong. Treasurer: John Dixon. Committee members; Maureen Campbell, Clare Cupit, Jan De Vries, Milly Farrell, Enid Maher and Robyn Newton. Our first trip of the year was on 22nd February when we went to Towradgi Bowling club, where we had a lovely lunch and chatted to the members. We then played 18 ends of Bowls on their lovely kept bowling greens. Our next outing is on Sunday 19 April 2015 when we are off to Picton. It should be a great day. Hopefully the weather will stay warm and sunny for us. The bus leaves at 9.30am from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. After that, we have a trip Umina Bowling Club on the 21st June 2015. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun. For further information please contact Robyn Newton on 9858-3014, Brenda Paterson on 88199650, Maria Armstrong on 9878-5656 or Milly Farrell on 9872 7949. Regards. Maria Armstrong TRAVEL CLUB Since our last journal the Travel Club has been very busy enjoying a beautiful cruise around Sydney Harbour, sampling a Taste of the Bush at The Entrance and lunch overlooking the lake. In April we took in the breathtaking views of the Three Sisters at Katoomba before lunching a Leura Golf Club and then visiting Scenic World. Our next few months are shaping up to be just as memorable with the following events: MOTHER’S DAY LUNCHEON - THURS 7TH MAY Join us for a good time with a scrumptious 2-course meal in the Golden Hawk Restaurant. KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE . . . We are a family-friendly swim school that offers a broad range of lessons from 6 months of age up to adults, as well as catering for some swimmers with special needs. All our instructors are Austswim qualified. We are a swim school with a personal and caring approach while keeping our focus on water education and safety. SAFETY We can help you make your children safer in and around water. Our babies and Pre-schooler swimming classes are designed to develop water confidence, safety, survival skills, which all develop a respect for the water. Lessons are 30 minutes duration and are conducted by our friendly and encouraging Austswim Qualified Infant Instructors.

PROGRAMME LEVELS WATER BABIES For our younger babies aged from 6 to 18 months. Through songs and games the emphasis is on educating both the baby and carer in all aspects of water safety and familiarisation in a fun and safe environment. AQUA BABIES For our babies aged between 18 and 36 months. Again, parents or carers share the fun. The emphasis is on water confidence and elementary swimming skills. PENGUINS Introducing your pre-schooler to their first lesson without a parent or carer in the water. We start to develop their swimming skills with the aim for them to be able to swim independently over short distances and to safely return to the side of the pool and exit unaided. We also have classes for the more advanced pre-schoolers where we introduce “big arms” and elementary backstroke skills while continuing to develop their swimming over greater distances. SALMON The Salmon introduces our school age swimmer to the first level of swimming education. Water safety and basic swimming skills are developed, with the focus on front streamlines, under the supervision of our qualified instructors.

REALITY CHECK According to the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia, 49% of child fatalities aged 0-4 drowned in a swimming pool. The legendary swimming coach Laurie Lawrence says, “Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and wellbeing; it enhances their selfesteem and teaches them a respect for water. However they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown-proof”. Therefore, we urge parents and carers alike never to leave children unsupervised around any body of water, no matter how shallow. FACILITIES We have a 25-metre 6-lane heated pool, which means that lessons continue all year round. There is plenty of undercover parking and ‘parents with prams’ parking with easy access to two lifts. The Fitness Edge offers a free crèche facility for all our eligible parents with small children from the age of 3 months of age upwards.

STINGRAY We introduce our swimmers to basic freestyle, backstroke, back streamlines and diving. We focus on kicking and arm coordination and back streamlines. SWORDFISH With the coordination in place, we fine tune bilateral breathing technique in freestyle. We also develop backstroke and introduce basic tumble turn skills. STROKE CORRECTION AND ADULTS Our more serious swimmers move onto Mini-Squad and Squads. We develop correct technique, speed and racing skills. ADULTS You are never too old or too young to learn to swim. Swimming is a great low impact form of exercise with benefits for both your cardiovascular system and muscle toning. We hold adult classes on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning over two levels, Beginners and Intermediate.
