President’s

Football REPORT

REPORT

With the 2016 Season edging closer, the Football Club wish to advise members, and particularly Wests Tigers supporters, that the REDRLFC will sponsor the West Tigers State Cup team in 2016.

Dear Member, With Christmas and New Year celebrations now over, I hope that all Members had a great time together with family and friends over this period, and that all your wishes come true in 2016.

At this stage there has not been a complete draw for trials for this grade and they will be displayed when they become available.

2016 will be of great importance to our Club with many decisions to be made by your board and management on the future direction that our Club will take. In late February your board and management, together with our relevant consultants, are undertaking a complete review of our Strategic Plan to determine the best possible method to achieve this. At the time of writing, the Board has agreed to sell the ‘Hawks on Second’ site, and an agreement for sale has been signed for the purchase of the property. The final documentation for the sale should be completed by late May 2016. Full details of the sale will be available in the Club’s Annual Report to members later in the year.

With new rules coming in for the next season, the Club has agreed to supply the four Junior Clubs in our area with headgear to comply with these rules.

The Club has agreed to be the Major Sponsor of the Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (ERNA) team to play in a new competition to be called the Premier League. This Competition has been designed to create a pathway for talented young ladies to progress to higher levels of competition such as the Sydney Swifts and possibly go on to play at the top level of their sport. The team will be named the ‘Erna Hawks’ and the launch for this team will be held in our Club in late February. We wish this team all the best for this forthcoming competition. (For further details refer page 3).

The Club would like to express its sincere thanks to the outgoing coach of the State Cup team, Paul Fletcher. Paul has been an inspiration in his many years in charge of the team and the Club wishes him every success in his future endeavours.

As stated in the previous journal, we will be undertaking some renovations to certain parts of the Club, and I hope that Members will not be too inconvenienced by this work. The first stage, an upgrade of the Club’s auditorium, will be underway and, in fact, almost completed by the time you receive this Journal in early February.

For those members with children or grandchildren looking for a junior league team in 2016, if you type ‘Balmain Junior League’ into your web browser you will be directed to the registration page for all the junior league clubs in the district.

One of our long term Duty Managers, Paul Kowalski, has decided to leave after some 15 years’ service, and we wish Paul all the best in his new endeavours. New rules have been introduced to Junior Rugby League for 2016, including the mandatory use of mouthguards and headgear. Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club became aware (through our membership of Leagues Clubs Australia) of the difficulties being encountered by Brewarrina Junior League in not only relaunching a junior competition to engage their youth, but also the cost of complying with the new rules. Your club has agreed to meet the cost of this equipment for 2016 for Brewarrina, to complement the great work already done by Leagues Club Australia in fostering Rugby League in this country town. We wish them every success in the coming season. Your Club continues to trade strongly and at this point, just over half way through a new financial year, we are confident of another strong financial performance. In conclusion, may I, on behalf of the board and management, thank all members for their continued support of our Club both now and in the future. Keith Aggett President

COMMUNITY NEWS

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club has joined the Sista Code movement, a joint initiative with the Leagues Club Association (LCA) and RSL and Services Clubs Association. The aim of the initiative is to help local women and children housed in refuges by providing them with much needed vital goods, toys and vouchers.

We will be setting up a collection point within the Club and we are reaching out to the goodwill of all our members to drop off any items they can spare, from 1 March, that would make a mum and her children smile and feel special, loved and cared for by their community! Items may include, Hand bags, female and children’s clothing, new sheets, pillows, doonas, new make-up and toiletries etc.

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS BRIDGE CLUB If you have played Bridge in the past, then why not join your fellow club members at one of our regular play sessions. No partner is needed, as we will look after you. Monday: 12.45pm to 3.45pm or Tuesdays 7.30pm to 10.30pm. If you would like an introduction to the latest innovations in Bridge bidding and play then come to our coaching sessions from 10.15am to 12 noon each Monday. CAMERA CLUB In 2016 members of RELC will be able to view the efforts of the Camera Club more often. The Club will display members’ work on screens around the club as well as the Head-On exhibition later in the year. Last year we were involved with this Australia-wide photographic exhibition for the first time. This year it will be even larger. The enthusiasm of our members doesn’t wane and we enter several three-way competitions so that they can exhibit photos around the state and the world. Members are also supported with outings where they can practice their photography. This year we are planning to go out and photograph the 18ft Skiffs and Balmoral Beach at sunrise. These outings are designed so that more adept members can show novices certain techniques and improve their camera knowledge. Do you like photography? Can you spare a couple of Monday nights a month, then why not join? Come along for the night for free to see how we operate; we’re a friendly bunch. The next meeting is February 8th at 7.30pm. CHESS CLUB The 2015 RELC Chess Club Championship finals were completed in November. The joint winners were Arthur Huynh and Donato Mallari (same as last year!) with Steven Liu in third place. The club’s “Classic” tournament finished in early December and was won by Christopher Ball (last year’s winner also) with Egon Cardenas in second place. Division 2 was won by Shane Dibley and Alan Marton. In late November, the club hosted the NSW Blitz Championships (5 minutes per player for the whole game), which was won by Anton Smirnov with a perfect 11/11, with Stanislav Berezovski second and Blair Mandla third. The club’s annual general meeting was held on 20 January 2016. It will be followed by the club’s Rapid Play championship tournament in the first three weeks of February.
