PRESIDENT’S REPORT

FOOTBALL REPORT

Welcome to the August edition of our journal. This my first report, which I am honoured and proud to present. It is with great sadness that last May we lost our past President, Keith Aggett, our mate and mentor, and I am feeling very privileged that the board has elected me as President. I have mentioned to many members since being elected that it is impossible to “fill the shoes” of an icon and legend in our industry, but I will do my best to lead the Board, to ensure the dreams and aspirations of those “who dug the well” are carried on for the continued success of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. In my role as President my aim is to be open with all our members, so please say, “Hi Jim” if you see me walking around. Together with my fellow directors and our great team of management and staff, I am always looking for feedback to improve our club for its most important asset, you the members. We have received very positive feedback in relation to our new foyer, with most enjoying the bright and open atmosphere welcoming them to our club. We know and understand the importance of your club being the leading club in the area, hence the continual (and sometimes inconvenient) refurbishing with the most modern resources available to make your visits both exciting, pleasurable and comfortable. In relation to our long term planning we are “hastening slowly”. At the time of writing we have several proposals in planning, some short term and some long term. We will continue to consult and plan with our consultants and our local council to develop the best options for the club’s assets for our future. The Board is one that will continue to think and plan our long term future (even though it may be future Boards that realise the result and take the pats on the back). We are not politicians who only worry about what is happening now so we will continue to forward plan and build a “bigger and better well” to make our founders proud. Our new world champion, Jeff Horn, summed it up perfectly with regard to the way our Board thinks. “Believe in yourself, have good people around you and work towards your dream.” We are all looking forward to the busy year ahead. Thank you for your continued support. “See you in the Club.” Jim McClymont PRESIDENT

Dear Members Since my last report I have to say that not much has changed out at Wests Tigers. In fact the situation has gone from bad to worse. After 16 rounds of football, our State Cup side sits on 10 points. These points include one bye and four wins. As you would imagine, with this many points we are out, and in last position with 4 wins from 16 games. With our for and against record of 234 for and 430 against, and the leader of the competition on 29 points we have no chance of being in semi-final contention for this year. The make up of the Wests Tigers State Cup team for season 2018 is currently being reviewed. One possibility is the team will be sponsored by Wests Ashfield and play in the Magpies colours of black and white. The Football Club has been a strong supporter and major sponsor of the Wests Tigers State Cup team for many years, and should there be a move away from the Tigers’ name and colours, the Football Club would have to reassess its position. RYDE EASTWOOD UNDER 19s As mentioned in my last report, Ryde-Eastwood Football club entered two sides in the Sydney-wide based competition. One side is in Division 1 and the second side, Division 2, or Gold 1 and Silver 2. The Football Club is very excited with how these two teams have been performing in the competition to date. After nine rounds our division 1 side (Gold) has won seven and lost two, the two losses coming in the last two weeks. They are still holding second place in the competiton. Division 2, or Silver, has not fared that well but is still in the top four in its competition. After nine rounds, it has five wins and four losses. Apart from both sides having losses in their last games, we have, unlike the Wests Tigers State Cup side, great hopes of both sides making the semi-finals. This will be a great achievement for our first season in this competition. M CHAPPLE - PRESIDENT Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club

Valé Keith Aggett Keith Aggett, Club President and a stalwart of both Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and RydeEastwood District Rugby League Football Club passed away on Thursday 4th May after a period of ill-health. His legacy to the sport of Rugby League and the Club industry spanned over seven decades. Keith commenced his association with Rugby League as a player in the 1940s with Balmain Police Boys Club and Grahams Junior Rugby League Club, and progressed to a 1st Grade career with Parramatta and Balmain in the 1950s before a serious leg injury ended his playing career in 1956. His focus then turned to family life and a successful business career, as well as a move into coaching Rugby League. He also found the time to represent NSW as a crew member of the “Daring” at the Australian Skiffs Championships in 1958. In 1962 he commenced an association with Ryde-Eastwood that would endure until his passing. He was part of the founding committee, attending the very first meeting to form a District Rugby League Club, and in 1963 he was appointed to the Board of the newly formed Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club, ‘The Hawks’. He took up the role of secretary soon after and remained in that role for over 50 years. Keith was also appointed the inaugural 1st Grade Coach of ‘The Hawks’ and coached that team for the first two years (1963-64).

and the New South Wales Rugby League. He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for service to Rugby League, and in 2011 Leagues Clubs Australia awarded Keith the prestigious ‘Jack Martin Medal’ for 70 years of service to the game of Rugby League as a player, coach and administrator. His life and his love were the Football Club and the Leagues Club and the success of both organisations, a love which was second only to his great love for his wife Beryl, his family and extended family. His association with Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club contributed enormously to the success of both organisations. His contribution to Rugby League, to sport in general, to the local community and to the Club Industry was significant by any measure.

When the Football Club Committee decided they needed a licensed Club, Keith was elected as one of the Foundation Directors and remained on the Club Board for 54 years; 11 years as a Director, 29 years as Vice President and 14 years as President. His Presidency also coincided with a period of enormous regulation changes and ensuing challenges within the industry. Keith accepted those challenges head-on and provided great stewardship to the Club during difficult times. Keith was a life member of Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club, Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, Balmain Rugby League Football Club

NEW CLUB PRESIDENT - JIM McCLYMONT The Board of Directors recently elected Mr James (Jim) McClymont as the Club’s fourth President.

Jim showed promise as an amateur boxer and represented the Police Boys in demonstration bouts on the Sunday morning TV Ringside programme throughout his early teens.

He remains involved with the Tigers’ Intrust Super Premiership side these days, serving as a dressing room attendant alongside Hawks’ Football Club Chairman, Malcolm Chapple.

Jim was first elected to the Club’s Board in 1995 and has been a great contributor to our licensed Club, the Football Club and the Club industry since that time.

Jim also played rugby with Dundas Valley and rugby league with West Ryde before coaching son Scott’s Eastwood Marist Bros teams in the Balmain Junior League. He later served the West Ryde-Denistone JRLFC with distinction.

“Taking on my new role as Club President is an honour indeed especially replacing my dear colleague and mentor Keith Aggett, who taught me so much as a director,” said Jim.

An Ermington native, Jim attended Ermington Public School and Macquarie Boys High and was a talented boxer in his youth. He was a keen gymnast at Parramatta Police Boys Club before he was identified at the age of 12 by boxing trainer Claude Budd as having the agility and reflexes to take up the sport.

In 1993, Jim joined the Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club and two years later was elected on to the Leagues Club Board of Directors.

“We must continue to pay tribute to those who dug the well and carry on the dreams and aspirations of all of the founding directors,” he added.

He has also been a Director of Leagues Club Australia for the past 11 years.

CLUB NEWS

Sidney Ho Celebrates

30 Years

at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues A TRUE MILESTONE In July 2017, our resident caterer and head chef, Sidney Ho, celebrated 30 years at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. The club congratulates Sidney on achieving this amazing milestone. Since 1987 Sidney’s dining outlets within the club have served over 500,000 club customers in the Palm Court Bistro family restaurant, the fine dining Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant and the Heritage Function Centre.

Pictured left to right: Danny Chen, Sidney Ho, Cax

“Back in 1987, we started out very small,” Sidney explains. “The bistro was set back in a small corner of the club. Gradually over the years as the business grew, our footprint in the club expanded to what it is today.” From humble beginnings Sidney now employs over 50 staff and the bistro serves members and their guests a wide and varied menu of quality meals 364 days a year. “We like to offer variety and affordability,” Sidney adds. “From premium steaks and hearty burgers to quality noodles, seafood and a special kids’ menu, we aim to cater for all the family.” The weekend queues to dine at the Palm Court Bistro certainly bear testament to this. Several years ago, in consultation with the Club’s Board and Executive Management, Sidney transformed the Club’s signature à la carte menu into the Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant. He drafted in a team of specialist chefs and the venue has since gone from strength to strength. It delivers authentic Chinese cuisine and Yum Cha, its signature dishes including Peking duck, sizzling Mongolian lamb, Japanese style beef cubes in wasabi sauce, mud crab with bean vermicelli, and minced pork in hot pot.

Interior Revitalisation Project The renovations to the Club’s main entry and foyer and access passage to the bistro, were essentially completed in early June. Those members who haven’t been to the Club in the last few months will get an idea of the finished product from the photos in this article. The result is a major change from our previous design and one we hope will serve us well into the future. There are still a few major unfinished items and they are: • The completion of the decorative screening around the Coffee Club • The installation of new illuminated signage behind reception • The upgrade to the lighting and appearance of the awning area outside the main entry There are also some other minor outstanding items and defect rectification items that need to be finalised. We expect these works to commence by the end of July and may even be completed by the time you read this article. Part of the upgrade was the replacement of the fish tank, a feature of the Club’s foyer since 1988, which has provided great joy to several generations of families since that date. Once the new tank has been properly conditioned we hope to add some additional varieties of fish and other sea life. We are also working on plans for memorabilia areas for both the Licensed Club and the Football Club in areas adjacent to the foyer. The next stage of the renovations/upgrade will be the main lounge and main bar area, and plans are underway to commence this work in mid to late August. These works will also include an upgrade to the furniture to complement the fresh new look.

CAMERA CLUB Last month the Camera Club came out on top of a three-way competition with two other clubs: Dooleys at Lidcombe and Port Hacking Camera Club at Cronulla. The voting was tight but we managed to win on the day. We often enter competitions like this to give our members a chance to see work from other camera clubs and to improve our own photography. We have several new members and several people coming for a trial visit, which will only strengthen the club because of the new ideas they bring. If you would like to join, simply turn up on one of our meeting nights and get a feel for the club – we don’t bite! We do however welcome and help new members. CHESS CLUB The Club Championship Preliminary roundrobin tournament is complete, with the following players progressing to the round robin finals tournament in October and November: Group A – Donato Mallari and Michael Anderson; Group B – Arthur Huynh and Shane Dibley; Group C – Chris Ball and either Mohan Pagadala or Rob Watson (playoff required). Handicap winners in each division were: Group A – Bruce Williams; Group B – Xerix Mohseni; Group C – Jason Yan. We have three teams in the interclub, ‘Grade Matches’ competition, and all three are leading their divisions. In the U1500 division, after six rounds the team is in first place by 1½ points in a field of seven teams and will be playing in the finals. In the U1700 division, after six rounds our team is ahead by 2 points. In the U2100 division, at the halfway point after 5 rounds (out of 10), we are in first place by 4½ points. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059) or Rob Watson (0408 463 759). EUCHRE CLUB The Euchre Club is going very well and any experienced players who would like to join us on a Wednesday night at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room are most welcome. Congratulaltions to our monthly prize winners – April 2017: 1st Fiona Arndell, 2nd Marita Dann. May 2017: 1st Ray Stewart, 2nd George Hodgekiss. June 2017; 1st Mary Griffiths, 2nd Ivy Hitchens. At the conclusion of play each evening we enjoy a light supper. For further information contact our President Don Baillie on 9869 2857. June Stewart. THE FISHING CLUB Our AGM will be held on the 20/7/17 at 8pm. Our original Patron, Mr Keith Aggett, is sadly no longer with us after his passing on the 4/5/17. At this time of writing a new Patron for the fishing club has not been allocated by the club’s Board. Our April outing was cancelled due to bad weather and on the May outing we were greeted with large swells, making moving on deck difficult. Sam Sundar had a rare catch of a half kilo plus squid and Winnie Lo had the heaviest bag of fish at 4.5kg, beating Sam by .1 of a kilo. 73 fish were caught on the day but none over 1kg. The June outing was a much more pleasant day. Steve Adamson, Mr Snapper, caught five fish on the day. The amazing thing being they

16

www.releagues.com.au

were all snapper; you may remember a year back he caught a 5kg plus snapper. Steve got the biggest fish, a 1.59kg snapper and Sam Sundar the heaviest bag at 6.7kgs. The total catch on the day was 34.3kgs for 59 fish. The fishing club organizes monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm (except December). Fishing Club President. Trevor Fahey. GOLF CLUB Penrith hosted a medal round and congratulations to Warren Savy and Yuri Popov. Our Runners up on the day were Robert Wood and Daryl Allwood. Massey Park hosted the annual MarisBusher Trophy Challenge (Ryde-Eastwood vs North Ryde RSL) with Ryde-Eastwood holding onto the trophy. That’s 8 years in row now. The Ridge was a small field for our medal round and congratulations go to Robert Wood and Yuri Popov, with Colin Cope runner-up. Cabramatta hosted round 3 of the Stableford trophy with the winner on the day being Daryl Allwood and Tony Tedesco runner-up. Richmond was the semi-final of Matchplay with Ulla Wood and Dave Whybro progressing to the final. The medals on the day went to Ulla Wood and Slava Sokolov with Daryl Allwood as runner-up. The Team Shield was contested at Lynwood with this year’s honours going to Slava Sokolov and John Nilan, with Tony Tedesco and Chris Spence runners-up. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com Annika. INDOOR BOWLS Several members have been selected to play in the Australian Championships to be held in Devonport, Tasmania in August. They include Doreen Anderson, Jenny Loveridge, Michael Wookey, Ron Asser, Pat Petty, Cath Lynn, Don Burtt, Kerry Lane, Michael Andersch and Graham Bibb. We wish them every success. Our Christmas-in-July functions were again well attended. Our thanks go to our Patron, Mr. Jack King, for his attendance and continued support. Our thanks also go to Sidney and his staff for their enjoyable menu. We continue to have good attendances at both our bowling sessions with new players recently joining our Thursday night mixed session. We welcome new or casual players to join us at any time. Ladies play Wednesdays 10.30am - 2pm and mixed play Thursday nights 7.15pm – 10pm. Enquiries, call Narelle 8065 9284 or Cath m: 0413 600 019. SENIORS CLUB We send best wishes to all our members who are not in the best of health at the moment and look forward to seeing them again soon. As always, we have been very busy with our two meetings a month – on the first and third Thursday – our monthly walks in and around Sydney and our monthly bus trips. In May we had a Tafe lunch at the Ryde College of Catering, and a bus trip to the Aircraft Restoration Society at Albion Park Rail where we spent the morning with our guides telling us the history of the many aircraft, old and new – a wonderful experience. In June we spent the morning looking around (and buying gifts) from the historic Volunteer Arts &

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS

Craft Cottage in Campbelltown – where we also enjoyed morning tea; even our gentlemen were impressed. In July we had a three course “Christmas” Lunch at Berowra Waters together with great entertainment. We have many more outings planned for the remainder of the year so come along and join us. Our membership fee is only $5. For more information please contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419. SQUASH CLUB Unfortunately the Squash Club’s Patron (Mr John Dunlea) has been unwell of late. All of the Squash Club members send their best wishes to him, as he focuses on healing. In late June, Ernie Speed (Squash Club President) participated in the 2017 NSW State Squash Masters Titles, held at Dural. Although his competitive spirit was strong, Ernie was felled by his pre-existing injuries. Better luck next time, Ernie. How will you stop the cold winter weather from forcing you into hibernation? We have a quick and easy solution to this dilemma – join the Squash Club! If you would like to play squash with our club please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Players are ALWAYS welcome. Two SQUASH players in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. It sank, proving once again that you can’t have your kayak and heat it too. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Our last trip was to Umina Bowling Club on Sunday 18 June 2017. It was a great day and we all enjoyed ourselves as we normally do when we visit this Club. The sun came out to keep us warm as we played. Our next outing is to Davistown RSL club on Sunday 6 August 2017. We have never been there before and we’re excited to try somewhere new and to meet other bowlers and visit other Bowling clubs. Dress code is Bowls uniform. The bus leaves at 9.30am from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Then on Sunday 24 September 2017 we are off to Avoca Beach Bowling club for another fun day of Bowls. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, as the saying goes “The more the merrier”. For further information please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Brenda Paterson on 8819 9650 or Milly Farrell on 9874 4667. TRAVEL CLUB The Travel Club had a good day out visiting the Seven Islands in the Hawkesbury. The day was sunny and warm as our ferry ploughed its way up the river. A good meal of fish and chips was washed down with a liquid of your choice. Mother’s Day Luncheon was well attended and a two-course meal spiced with chat was a winning combination. Following this event was a lunch at TAFE, with a well-presented meal and a drink of your choice. Some 30 of our members attended on this day. As everybody can feel winter is here, we have arranged a day out to the blue Mountains to hold “Christmas in July”. This is surely the luncheon to attend, after a drive to the Mountains, a good warming meal with all the Christmas dressing. We are also looking forward to a sail to Watson’s Bay and lunch. Just the thing to do on a sunny day, and take in the smell of salt. We meet the first Tuesday in the month on the Ryedale Room. Come along and have a cup of tea with us.
