Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, a fivestar Mayfair hotel overlooking Green Park, has unveiled the newly renovated Art Deco Palm Court Lounge & Bar — home to the hotel’s celebrated afternoon tea and lively cocktail bar. The transformation marks a key milestone ahead of the hotel’s centenary in 2027, reimagining a heritage space for the modern guest, just in time for the festive season.

EVOKING AN ERA OF ART DECO ELEGANCE The redesign, led by London-based Areen Design, introduces refreshed interiors that blend the spirit of the 1920s with contemporary style. Palm Court now unveils a sophisticated new look featuring faux shagreen finishes, elegant brass detailing and dramatic onyx pendant lighting. These features are complemented by stylised wall panels and a striking geometric carpet inspired by the work of celebrated textile designer Marion Dorn, whose designs have graced London landmarks such as Claridge’s and The Savoy.

to classic Art Deco design, the space is crowned by a 1927 stained-glass dome, a composition of chevrons, sunbursts and jewel-toned panels in emerald, cobalt and amber. Onyx pendants illuminate a backlit marble bar edged in brass, and the revitalised space flows naturally between lively bar seating and more intimate tea corners, capturing the glamour and vitality of the Jazz Age in a setting that feels both elegant and effortlessly timeless.

The atmosphere is further elevated by live piano performances from Thursday to Sunday, bringing the charm of Mayfair’s Jazz Age into the heart of Palm Court.

A REFRESHED ALL-DAY DINING AND AFTERNOON TEA EXPERIENCE To mark the reopening, Sheraton Grand London Park Lane unveils a renewed food and beverage programme that celebrates the glamour of its Art Deco heritage.

The new afternoon tea, crafted by Head Pastry Chef Biju Joshwa, is inspired by the indulgence and precision of the 1920s.

Highlights include a Golden Lemon Meringue Dome, created as a subtle tribute to Palm Court’s domed stained-glass ceiling,

alongside a selection of refined savouries and pastries.

The refreshed all-day dining menu continues this spirit of modern nostalgia, featuring elevated classics such as a contemporary Croque Madame, Cornish dressed crab and John Ross smoked salmon blinis and a Jam & Jubilee pudding.

A thoughtfully curated cocktail list, including the Moderne Malt Fashioned and the Golden Hour Punch, complements the experience, with each drink designed to reflect the golden age of Mayfair.

CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF ART DECO HERITAGE Originally opened in 1927 as The Park Lane Hotel, Sheraton Grand London Park Lane was designed by Adie, Button & Partners in the grand Art Deco style, building upon an early concept by C. W. Stephens, the architect behind Harrods. The Grade II-listed building remains one of London’s finest examples of the era, featuring a fullsize Art Deco ballroom and the iconic Palm Court—long celebrated as the hotel’s social heart for afternoon teas, live music, and elegant gatherings.

The renovation coincides with the centenary of the Art Deco movement in 2025, honouring a design legacy that continues to shape the hotel’s distinctive character.

“Palm Court has always been a central part of the hotel’s story and a defining feature of its Art Deco heritage. As we approach our centenary, this renovation not only brings new light to the 1927 stained-glass dome, it also marks an important moment in the hotel’s evolution,” says Justin Pinchbeck, General Manager, Sheraton Grand Park Lane.

Upstairs, a first-floor dining room provides a more relaxed setting with full table service, while a hidden outdoor terrace offers additional seating tucked away from the street.

HOW MUSIC CAN INFLUENCE CUSTOMER BEHAVIOUR The Power of Music Two-thirds (66%) of UK adults admit that the type of music played in shops or businesses (such as cafes or salons) influences what they buy and their habits – with 27% saying “definitely” and 39% answering with “probably”.

Our study* of over 2,000 UK adults further revealed the music genres customers believe business owners should play to persuade them to spend, spend, spend — with pop a prevailing favourite.

When shoppers were asked to rank genres, pop came out on top. Over a third (35%) of customers said that they feel be more inclined to buy extravagant clothes and accessories, like a designer pair of trainers if pop plays.

Pop also reigns supreme at the UK’s supermarkets (43%) particularly among the 45-59 age bracket (48%). But food shops could also experiment with reggae — which tempts 16% to fill their trolleys — and hip-hop (15%) to encourage shoppers to spend on tasty treats.

Pop has persuasive powers in salons, too; 37% of people say this genre tempts them to try a new hairstyle. That said, moody rock anthems (19%) and soul melodies (18%) are also likely to leave customers feeling brave at in the hairdresser’s chair. Over-60s sway towards a new style if classical tracks play — more so than other age groups (18%).

Restaurant owners, take note — classical music is more likely to get diners in the mood to order expensive items on the menu, appealing to nearly a third (31%) of people. Soul (22%) and jazz (21%) are also popular, depending on the ambience you’re aiming for. Meanwhile, 40% of adults said that they are more likely to indulge in an extra treat if pop music plays in a pub or café.

Crucially, over half of UK adults (53%) dislike dining in silence, particularly the younger generation (56%). The primary put-off is the lack of atmosphere (61%) while 32% claim the experience isn’t as fun without background beats. After all, nearly two-thirds (63%) admit that different types of music affect their mood in different ways.

This may account for why over two-thirds (67%) of customers admit to LEAVING a venue after realising no songs were playing. This scenario is most common in pubs — where one in five (20%) revellers have chosen the door over a drink after a silent reception — closely followed by bars and cafes. Evidently, a soundtrack to sipping, snacking and socialising is essential.

Ultimately, the senses play a pivotal role in creating a positive experience for customers in shops and businesses like restaurants or salons. When asked to rank stimulants from 1-5, ‘music’ was a priority for a fifth (21%) — second only to ‘colours’ (41%) but surpassing ‘fragrance’ and ‘lighting’.

The key is to find your sweet spot – consumers enjoy a nice glass of wine whether they are in a village or a city, but the key is finding the right wines to serve by the glass according to your clientele and demographic – not your house wines, but a step up – those wines that wouldn’t usually be available by the glass – and then it’s a win-win! Businesses see a profit in the sales of wines by the glass, and consumers have a choice of wines that might not usually be available.

It sounds like an absolute no brainer to have a wine serving system due to the fact that over-pouring and lack of portion control leads to reduced profit margins.

They also look brilliant behind the bar and really enhance the aesthetics of a venue.

Add to that control of wastage and over pouring, profits, whites and reds served at the correct temperature, three volumes which can be programmed…

We continue to evolve! Our Roma Series is the most recent for still wines – they are beautiful! They supersede the Elite systems, still with the patented tapping head technology, but with some new bells and whistles, new wallpaper choices and branding if you wish, larger touch screen, and improved electrical consumption. It never gets old when you have an enquiry from a new customer and can see how they will be using the dispensers, and to see how we can continue to serve the industry.

We’re also involved in some exciting integration projects – with retailers, cruise ships, vineyards, hotel and hospitality management systems – it keeps us busy and on our toes!

Any establishments close to home you can tell us about?

Yes, the Wallow on Exchange Street in Norwich, which we opened as a working wine bar/showroom. It’s now under new management due to its success, and Laz and Kane provide a welcoming space at any time of day – they have 48 wines available by the glass over three levels. The Maltings, part of Chestnut Group, in Weybourne, and the beautiful Harper Hotel in Langham, near the Norfolk coast – beautiful places to get away.
