Publishers' Letter Welcome to the December/January issue of Looking Good! This issue has many surprises for you, including a cover and photo essay by Annapolis photographer David Hartcorn. Let me say delicately that this shoot was fabulous and “challenging.” We had to wait all day for the sun to create a perfect diagonal shadow in a private parking lot. As luck would have it, when that magical moment came, around 3 p.m., we found a Mercedes parked in the exact spot we needed. We had to knock on many doors and all but break into the office building to find the car’s owner. (It turns out he owned the building and parking lot.) Luckily, he moved his vehicle and we got the shot just in time. It is one of my all time favorites. The model, Brittany Yevoli is an aspiring ballet dancer and wears a gown by Mary’s Bridal, a hidden treasure in Annapolis carrying many designer gowns. The issue has much more for you to delve into, including breaking news about a novel surgery that may cure some chronic headaches, a great fitness column by Dale Barr and our first-ever Editors’ Choice Awards for best wedding venues. ballet dancer often portrays effortless grace: Odette’s slow pirouette, Giselle’s controlled arabesque. But such grace comes with much effort, requiring articulation, artistry and strength. Maggie Kudirka’s training in dance has saved her life. It was the summer of 2014, and she was only 23 years old. Her lifelong dream—to train and perform with the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School—was shattered when she discovered that she had stage 4 breast cancer. The cancer started in her breast and had spread to her sternum, pelvis and back. She accepted the bone chilling diagnosis with grace and a reservoir of inner strength, the same strength that propelled her since the age of 4 to dance. Her doctors established an aggressive approach to treatment, which included a double mastectomy. She articulates her desire to live by continuing to dance, even though she had to leave the Joffrey Concert Group and move back home to Ellicott City, to her parents and her beloved Pomeranians. Maggie has chemotherapy every three weeks, and ovarian suppression therapy every four weeks. The cancer isn’t growing, but it’s possible that the cancer cells will reappear. “For stage 4 the average life span is only three years and I am hitting that soon,” says Maggie. Summer 2017 will mark her three-year anniversary.

A day in Maggie’s life, November 15, 2016 6:20 a.m. Wake up late and have to rush to get ready to go to the hospital for my ovarian suppression shot. Body feeling tired and drained. 6:30 a.m. Leave for the hospital on a cold damp day. 7:30 a.m. Go back to get my vitals taken. Everything is normal. 8:00 a.m. Sitting alone with ice on my stomach waiting for it to become numb before the shot. 8:15 a.m. Getting the shot. The needle is so big I can’t even look at it. 8:17 a.m. Leave the hospital to rush to Towson University for ballet class with Runqiao Du. 9:00 a.m. Class starts. Class is difficult for me today. My body is drained and I have no energy. I take barre. During the rest of class I sit and stretch. 10:30 a.m. Leave Towson to head home. 11:00 a.m. Take my mom to the mall to run an errand. Have lunch at Panera. 1:00 p.m. Going home to take a nap before work. 3:45 p.m. Wake up late for work. Have to rush to get ready by 4 p.m. ready by 4 p.m. 4:30 p.m. Arrive at Design In Motion to teach. I am a half an hour late and I for my class feel horrible for being late. 5:00 p.m. My second class, Flexistretcher, starts. This is one of my favorite classes to teach each week. Being able to teach young dancers a cross-training tool is so important and will help them become better dancers. 6:00 p.m. Head home after a long day. 7:00 p.m. Reheating vegan pizza for dinner. 8:00 p.m. Take a long bath to relax and get ready for bed. 9:00 p.m. Watch Dance Moms with my dogs and mom before bed. 10:00 p.m. Take my dogs up to bed and take my medicine (two pills). 10:15 p.m. In bed snuggling with my dogs. LG
To help pay for her medical bills (anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 for each hospital visit), Maggie has created a YouCaring website. Viewers can go to her page and contribute to her fund. She hopes to eventually create a nonprofit to help other ballerinas who have breast cancer. Follow Maggie at facebook.com/baldballerina.

Just between us (please don’t tell my husband) each year I spend a lot of money on facial rejuvenation. Charges for pricey peels, injectables, IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatments, microdermabrasions appear on my credit card bill right alongside other essentials such as food, water and, of course, chocolate and wine. My bathroom vanity is topped with so many bottles of promises that it could easily be mistaken for a chemistry lab. Looking my best is a priority.
I am greeted in the Mandarin Oriental hotel lobby by a towering floral display, maybe 20 feet high. A light fragrance whispers in the air. After one intoxicating inhalation I head to the spa where I find a space designed for contemplation. (Think Zen, not glitz.) A hot moist towel for my hands and mint tea to sip arrive within seconds. My shoes are whisked away, replaced by slippers. Orchid blossoms are everywhere.
When I learn that the exclusive brand Biologique Recherche is now available at the Mandarin Oriental spa in Washington, D.C., my desire to experience their anti-aging, one-hour-fifty-minute Absolute Facial is equal to the intensity of an addict in need of a fix.
Master Esthetician Ms. Lau adjusts my heated sculptural massage table before conducting an in-depth skin analysis. She examines my face with the concentration of a sculptor searching for hidden beauty locked inside a fresh block of marble. She determines the products and treatments I need. Each facial is customized to the epidermis—no two facials are alike. Extractions are expressly forbidden.
I have to have it. Name-dropped in lofty publications around the world, Biologique Recherche has a global cult following among jet-setting celebs but getting access isn’t easy. Locations for treatments are carefully selected by their team of experts that includes a biologist, physiotherapist and doctor. This French biological skincare line was originally founded as a scientific cosmetics research lab. It has maintained a buzzy reputation for over 30 years thanks to their expertise in developing products that use only pure, concentrated ingredients like Siberian ginseng root. The idea is to promote healthy cell turnover and regulate oil production. Truly obsessed devotees make the pilgrimage to the brand’s flagship beauty institute on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris but, fortunately for us, these products and treatments are now available less than an hour away. While I acknowledge the worldwide praise, with a price tag of $475 (plus tax and tip), let’s face it, the Absolute Facial is priced for those wealthy one percenters. Fortunately, being a Beauty Editor has perks. While from time to time my job enables me to be out there exploring new treatments at no cost, my ground rules remain the same: I will tell all. What it’s like and is it worth it?
Due to my sun-damaged skin, Ms. Lau focuses on brightening, reducing fine lines and hydration. Each serum, each treatment is applied with a different technique. Some products warrant quick shiatsu-like pulsing strokes to work on the muscle for lift. Others are gently massaged into my skin; others are carefully sculpted on my face. The first mask tones the eye area and reduces dark circles under my eyes. My lips are treated with botanical, marine and biological extracts. All natural, no dyes, no perfumes. A second mask follows—a light fabric permeated with marine collagen is draped over my face to hydrate the top layers of the epidermis. The fabric has holes for my eyes, lips and nose a la Hannibal Lecter. While the mask is doing its job, my neck, shoulders, feet, hands and arms are vigorously massaged. Warm booties are tucked onto my feet; toasty mitts onto my hands. I fight the temptation to fall asleep; I want to savor this lavish attention. To aid product penetration plus lift and tone the skin, Ms. Lau follows up with the Biologique Recherche Remodeling Machine, a bioelectrotherapy device—the piece de resistance. A wand-like instrument is pressed all over my face and neck. While the initial “pinches” on my skin catch me off guard, I think of the sensation as strong kisses and

focus on what I hope will be great results—tighter skin sans surgery. At the end of the treatment, Ms. Lau hands me a mirror as if she is revealing her latest objet d’art. Voila! My skin looks glowing, brighter and I swear my neck looks more toned. Returning home from this escape-from-everything I ask myself “the” question: Is it worth it? When I consider the all-day spa experience (including use of steam room, sauna, showers, whirlpool and indoor swimming pool), the products, multiple masks, skin lifting machine and massages, if you have extra cash, do treat yourself! Money can’t buy happiness but this is as close as you can get to bliss. LG

You or someone you know has probably experienced a crippling headache—a throbbing pain begins on one side of the head. If it’s a migraine, light, sounds, smells and even people become irritating. Bright flashes (called aura) may appear. Pain tightens around your head like bands of steel. You leave work, go home, find a dark room and hide. You will try almost anything to make it stop. Apparently, the Neanderthals felt the same way. Studies reveal that as early as 7,000 B.C. segments of bone from the skull were removed to treat head pain caused by demons trapped inside, according to Headache Australia and the Brain Foundation. The procedure, called trepanning, was still recommended by 17th-century physicians. Today, over 12 million Americans suffer from migraines; 90 percent are unable to work or function normally, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Treatments range from drugs, herbs, acupuncture, biofeedback and Botox to gluten-free diets and lifestyle changes. The quest for a cure continues. However, there is hope at least for some people. A relatively new surgery, referred to as migraine surgery, nerve release therapy, or nerve decompression surgery, may cause your headaches to improve dramatically or even disappear. Dr. Emily Clarke-Pearson, a plastic surgeon new to Annapolis working with the Sullivan Surgery and Spa, offers this specialty surgery. She explains that certain headaches can be triggered when tissues and blood vessels irritate a sensory nerve in the forehead or scalp and pin it down or “tether” it. This nerve irritation can trigger a headache attack. During surgery, small incisions are made and muscle, blood vessels and scar tissue are dissected away to release the nerve. Following the surgery, approximately 85 percent of patients experience relief, notes Clarke-Pearson. The outpatient procedure takes one to two hours and the patient will have a small scar hidden in the brow or in the hairline. Recovery time is minimal and low-dose pain medication prescribed. The procedure is not for everybody, she cautions. Nerve release surgery is recommended by a neurologist when all else fails, and only for patients whose headaches improve with numbing injections or
Botox. In fact, patients with chronic headaches after trauma or due to occipital neuralgia (irritation of nerves in the back of the neck) may experience the greatest benefit when compared to classic migraine headache patients. The surgery is only about 16 years old and pioneered by Clevelandbased plastic surgeon Bahman Guyuron, M.D. He made the discovery incidentally while performing a forehead lift in 1999. He performed 314 forehead surgeries, routinely cutting into tissue and muscles. Thirty-nine of those patients happened to suffer from migraines. Thirty-one reported freedom from migraines after surgery. Although Guyuron’s work has been widely publicized, it has not gained widespread acceptance. Following publication, the study was criticized for faulty methodology including inadequate blinding between patient groups. However, new studies, sponsored by the National Institute of Health, are underway. Clarke-Pearson is well aware of this research as well as advancements in the technique. During her plastic surgery residency at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, she trained with a mentor surgeon, one of the pioneers of Guyuron’s work. “It was a great experience. At the time I was learning what worked and what didn’t,” she recalls. Serendipitously, during her training, she herself experienced painful migraines. “I was able to make lifestyle changes, but I know what it’s like. I can just picture myself in my bed blocking out all the light. To think of having one every day … I know professionals who have to stop working, or cut back on what they are doing.” She stresses that no one is claiming that nerve release surgery is a cure for headaches and research is preliminary. However, she has seen firsthand how this procedure can make a big difference in the lives of the right patients. “With a disability that great we have to keep turning over stones … it’s very promising,” she says. She has seen people whose lives have been ravaged by this complex disease and observed how joyful patients are after the procedure. It is good to know that hope is here and, however preliminary, real progress. LG

Eating Healthy with Kids By Dale barr
Does this sound familiar? You have a long day at work, just a coffee for breakfast, skip lunch, come home and get dinner ready for the kids but nothing for yourself. So what do you do? You end up eating the leftover chicken nuggets or macaroni and cheese and chase it down with a glass of wine or two. Or, you stop to grab something for dinner on the way home, say chicken tenders and some fries for the kids and you just “have a few” for yourself.
All of the difficulties of eating well are multiplied when taking into account our children. It’s easy as parents to skip our own needs because we’re so busy in all of our other tasks. Parenting is already high stress and when we add in lack of sleep and not eating (or eating poorly) we’re on the track to being overweight. Remember that small and healthy choices add up and can make all the difference in the long run.
Eating a healthy diet is difficult if you have limited food choices, bad habits, a tight schedule and parenting obligations. Many people think they can make up for their poor food choices by spending extra time in the gym. A fact: You cannot out-exercise a bad diet. It’s simply not possible. Many factors go into being fit and healthy: sleep, stress management, exercise and nutrition to name a few. The last one, nutrition, affects all of the others and is 80 percent of the game.
At our home we try to plan our meals each week, and yet we still look forward to getting out of the house for dinner and treating ourselves occasionally. As a parent, I look at restaurants differently, especially when it comes to the “kids menu.” By and large the choices are laughable. With such staples as chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, cheese pizza and hot dogs, all with a side of French fries and juice to drink, it’s no wonder we have a childhood obesity problem in our country.
36 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M
Here are a few strategies our family uses to eat healthy and stay fit with the unforgiving schedule of working parents: BE PREPARED – This is far and away the most important and all-encompassing rule. Try to decide your meals and prep them each week, prepare meals that can be made quickly, and have meals or snacks available that can bridge time gaps. For example, we use Sunday to grocery shop and decide our menu for the week. Then we prep or pre-cook as many of the meals as we can. That saves us time during the week when we’re trying to get kids into the bath and bed and are short on time to make dinner. Trying to decide what we should eat as it gets later and later in the evening eliminates many healthy choices. If we’ve already cooked a few chicken breasts Sunday night for our “emergency” meals during the week, we can just warm them up quickly with some veggies and we’ve got a great meal for all of us. Make sure you have healthy foods that get you from work, school or practice to home. We’ve been driving home with the boys and they’re so hungry they’re crying and screaming in the backseat. We’re hungry and cranky too and if we don’t do something now we may just drive off of a bridge (kidding)! Fast food isn’t the answer, so we make sure to have apples, grass-fed beef jerky, almonds and cashews with us at all times. This doesn’t seem like much but it has gotten us through many meltdowns with hungry boys. If it’s post-practice for older children or postworkout for you, have a protein shake or something similar to help speed recovery until your next meal. FEED THEM WHAT YOU EAT – Kids can be picky, but they’re also a blank slate and malleable when it comes to food. You don’t have to limit them to only foods you like, or only foods on the “kids menu.” When we eat out we feed our kids from our plates or we order them an adult meal to split. A steak Caesar salad or chicken avocado sandwich is far better than hot dogs or macaroni. Don’t dumb down what you’re eating to placate to them. Chicken nuggets are easy, but so is a roasted or grilled chicken breast. Conversely, don’t use your child as an excuse to order the macaroni for your indulgence. MAKE THEM TRY FOODS MULTIPLE TIMES – My wife likes to say a kid needs to try a food ten times before we give up on it. I’m not sure where she got this rule, but it’s served us well. There will be foods the kids don’t like, sure, but they seem to be few and far between. If you keep presenting a food in a variety of ways your child will at some point eat it. Other than spicy foods we have yet to come across much of anything our kids won’t eat.

History in the Making at William Paca House
Bridgette Miller and Ross Westholm Begin Their Lives by Celebrating the Past
38 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M
By Sarah Hagerty • Photography by Marcus Chacona, The Annapolis Photographer Their romance began with a chance meeting in a tavern in the oldtime neighborhood of Federal Hill in Baltimore. History was already playing a part in this love story. Bridgette, a project manager for Under Armour Performance, spent 11 months working on her perfect August 27, 2016 wedding, with the help of Lacey Wheatley. Just as Bridgette was in final negotiations with the Annapolis Yacht Club for the reception location, a fire all but destroyed the venerable venue. Bridgette, who grew up in the Baltimore area, asked her Annapolis-native fiancé Ross (a commercial real estate appraiser for his family firm) to send out a general alarm. Through contacts and kindness, the couple secured the grounds
of the Charles Carroll House—an impressive landmark that rarely grants such requests. It could not have turned out better if the couple had been planning on that location all along. Helpful locals also played a part when a friend of the family (Annapolis architect Scarlett Breeding, mother of one of the bridesmaids Megan Alt) lent her picture-perfect waterfront home to the girls for their pre-ceremony preparations. There, Kimi Collins from Happily Ever After Hair created the ’dos while Courtney McCormick worked her makeup magic on the ladies. My Flower Box provided the floral artistry. The ceremony took place in the gardens of the 18-century Georgian masterpiece William Paca House. Talk about history—Paca actually signed the Declaration of Independence. (An appropriately ironic spot for exchanging wedding vows.) In a non-traditional twist, the ceremony’s officiant was Bridgette’s former Girl Scout leader. The bride wore a Watters Cinzia dress from Betsy Robinson’s Bridal Collection; the groom wore a Vera Wang tuxedo from Men’s Wearhouse. Additionally, Towne Transport helped shuttle those who didn’t want to walk between venues. Ken’s Creative Kitchen provided their always memorable goodies including Chesapeake Bay rockfish with jumbo lump Maryland crabmeat served with a savory lemon soufflé. Almond amaretto cake and chocolate peanut butter cake joined Fiona Cakes’ wedding creation to please all the sweet teeth in the crowd. Winship Live brought the evening alive with music. After all that excitement, the happy couple needed the rest and relaxation of their Costa Rican honeymoon. LG

Wedding at Whitehall
an annapolis native (and interior designer) creates her dream wedding at an architecturally stunning venue By Sarah Hagerty • Photography by Missy Janes, Stone Barn Photography Margaret Reid and Gibbs Fogarty chose a traditional June wedding in Annapolis, the bride’s hometown. The couple live in Washington, D.C. (where Gibbs grew up) but Annapolitan roots grow deep. The mother of the bride, for instance, teaches French at an Annapolis area private school. Her father is in real estate. Margaret chose St. Anne’s Church for the ceremony (complete with 11 bridesmaids and 13 groomsmen; Towne Transport was in charge of getting everyone around town). The bride wore a gown by Oscar de la Renta and the groom wore a suit from J.Crew. Chesapeake Floral created the flower artistry. Memorable hair and makeup touches were provided by Christin Birckhead of Conceptual Beauty. The reception was held at Annapolis’ “newest” historical venue, Whitehall Estate, the impressive 1700’s plantation home listed on 40 L O O K I N G G O O D M A G A Z I N E . C O M
the National Register of Historic Places. It has only been opened for private events since last spring. In fact, the Reid-Fogarty reception was the first to be held at Whitehall. Paris Caterers out of D.C. created an amazing buffet dinner with special stations such as “Southern” with fried chicken, a jazzed up mac and cheese, and queen corn soufflé, and a “Land Station” with black Angus tenderloin of beef Bearnaise, and pork loin with fig glaze, as well as veggies and salads galore. Caroline’s Cakes came up with a picture-perfect confection. ATL Groove Factory provided the musical accompaniment to the merriment. Following a honeymoon tour of the Amalfi Coast (they wanted a “warm places” vacation with plenty of sightseeing options) the couple returned to their home in D.C. —where Margaret is an interior designer with OTJ Architects and Gibbs is general manager at Sport Chevrolet, his family business. Do’s and Dont’s WHAT ARE THE DO’S AND DONT’S TO ASK YOUR VENUE BEFORE SIGNING ON THE DOTTED LINE? Does your venue have a food and beverage minimum to be met and does it change during certain times of the year, or certain days of the week? Be sure you are very clear on what you are committing to. Does your venue require you have to have an exact number of guests, or do you need to meet a certain dollar amount? This is very important to understand, as guest lists and budgets can vary so much over the course of a year or more of wedding planning. Don’t ask your venue’s salesperson to commit to a definite dollar amount so far in advance—there are so many variables that happen along the way. Asking them to give you a number down to the penny is like asking them to predict the future!

WHEN BOOKING YOUR WEDDING VENUE THERE ARE SEVERAL HISTORIC WEDDING VENUES IN ANNAPOLIS. WHAT MAKES THE BRICE HOUSE SO SPECIAL? The Brice House is available for the first time to the public for weddings, conferences and events. The five-part Georgian mansion was built by James Brice in the late 1700s. A wealthy colonial Maryland planter, local and county officeholder and acting governor in 1792, he is one of Annapolis’ most fascinating figures. In 2014, the state of Maryland purchased the James Brice House and arranged for Historic Annapolis to maintain and manage the National Historic Landmark property. The setting is novel, intimate and charming, perfect in every way for that “princess moment” every bride should have.
