We are glad to say that this issue, the first for us in 2020, is just as fascinating to produce as our very first issue back in September 2010. Indeed, we are celebrating ten years of Annapolis Home Magazine! There are so many different architectural expressions of historic and contemporary homes and gardens in Annapolis. What makes Annapolis distinct from all other cities is that its finest architecture responds to the Chesapeake Bay. Every year, more and more talented professionals open their doors, influencing the scene with their own artistry. Every color combination produces a different sensation. You can experience this optical phenomenon by seeing the largest painting installation by the acclaimed abstract painter, Pat Steir. Hosted by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the exhibit spans nearly four hundred linear feet. When presented together, the thirty large-scale paintings “create an immense color wheel that shifts hues with each painting, with the poured paint on each canvas often appearing in the complementary hue of the monochrome background.” The show is open through September 7, 2020. hirshhorn.si.edu

The Hechinger Company was a major hardware and home supply chain headquartered in Maryland. Although it filed for bankruptcy in the 1990s, Hechinger Company partner John Hechinger acquired enough wealth to build a significant collection of 20th century art. Through art, Hechinger wanted to focus attention on the ingenuity, creative design, and craftsmanship of functional tools. The Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College is showcasing the collection in an exhibit titled: Retooled: Highlights from the Hechinger Collection. The show runs from January 9-February 23, 2020. Two exhibits in Baltimore are especially worth seeing. The Baltimore Museum of Art is hosting Adorned: African Women and the Art of Identity through June 19, 2020. Throughout the 19th and 20th Century, artistic labor across sub-Saharan Africa was divided by gender. While men worked in wood and metal, women worked with clay, cloth, and beads. This exhibit brings together works from the BMA’s collection to demonstrate the critical role of women in shaping aesthetic culture in Africa. For more information, visit artbma.org.

The Walters Museum in Baltimore is presenting From Mucha to Morris: Books of the Art Nouveau, a selection of 12 Art Nouveau books by William Morris, Alphonse Mucha, and others. This American Four-square anchoring the corner of the Duke of Gloucester Street and Compromise Street began as a plain kit house built around 1912, one of thirteen lining the same block, recalls Annapolis architect D. Wayne Speight. Times were quieter then. The Eastport Bridge was operated by hand, and the Bay Bridge nonexistent, with a ferry operating between the western and eastern shores. Through the ingenuity of architecture, fine custom building, and interior design, this aluminum house has become one of the most visible and beautiful homes in Annapolis. It is adjacent to the Annapolis Yacht Club, recently rebuilt after a devastating fire. Compromise Street is a powerful block the two landmarks, one
private, the other corporate, define Annapolis’ yachting and vernacular traditions. Over the years, the nondescript house took on different forms and inhabitants, at one point becoming apartments and at another housing an engineer named Emil Knobs. Knobs was well known in Annapolis as “The Zinnia Man.” In fact, there is a memorial plaque to this day honoring Knobs on BEFORE the fence at the Marriot across the street. Knobs, an engineer, according to folklore, kept watch from the first floor with a ship’s wheel, gearshift and horn. He would entertain his guests by blowing the horn and tricking the bridge operator into opening the Spa Creek Bridge! In 1998, the home went through a massive remodel. Photo: Gwin Hunt Speight, it gained a front porch, widow’s walk and third-floor deck. In a recent remodel, in 2019, the structure was fine-tuned and its interior remodeled. Lynbrook of Annapolis performed the work both times. In the first massive makeover, Lynbrook removed load bearing exterior walls and inserted large steel beams. A porch was added to the front façade, front door re-located, cedar shingles added, and every inch transformed and updated. Lynbrook’s John Sasenick, project supervisor, gets right to the point when summarizing recent changes in 2019, “We had to straighten out the house,” he says. He explains that builders look at houses in ways that ordinary people do not. Over time, a home will shift, sink, and settle, sometimes imperceptibly. We look at the shadows, he says, “they don’t lie.” A roofline may appear straight, but cast a crooked shadow, he explains. Using a “string test” to ensure even lines, he and the Lynbrook team “crisped it up” by evening out the roofline, adjusting gutter boards and fascias. Inside, they built a fireplace mantle, made the library smaller and added a powder room. The homeowner changed out the floors, substituting wide plank oak for cherry, and added a new master bath, with a stone shower and heated stone floors. Catherine Lowe assisted with the tile installation. Melissa Sakell of Kenwood Kitchens performed the kitchen remodel.
Serendipitously, Fitzsimmons knew this home well. When she was sixteen, she strolled by daily, on her way home from St. Mary’s High School. “I went to Saint Mary’s High School and loved it then… It may have been in my destiny to be a designer, “says Fitzsimmons, principal of her own firm for over 20 years. Fast forward, little did she know that she would be working on the design of the very same house, years later. And, working with the homeowner, a pre-existing client, from Belvoir Farms, she created a “classic traditional look” using paint to create a “fresh new perspective.” “We said goodbye to brown and replaced dark colors with light ones, even painting the massive cherry beams white,” which made a significant difference, she says. Fitzsimmons, to unify the home, used taupe tones. “It’s a nice neutral and it’s not too yellow… I’m not a huge gray fan. It is warmer than gray and not as syrupy as camel,” she explains. She covered the sunroom couch twice before using taupe neutrals. “I’ve covered that three times and it is so still clearly wonderful… it’s tailored, it’s classic… it’s a little camelback sofa—how can you beat that?” She purchased some unusual furnishings, such as an extra-wide secretary made in Indiana, a freestanding screen made of three Vol. 11, No. 1 2020 33

different-sized doors, and painted other existing pieces, such as the credenza from a previous dining room. She had the commode upstairs faux finished it in taupe and added a patina of black glaze. She noticed, even as a teenager, that the home lifted her spirits when she walked by. This sensitivity, our psychological response to the material environment, is at the heart of much of her design today. “How a house looks affects you. How a room looks affects you,” she explains. A stroll through this home reveals her philosophy at its best—light-filled rooms have buoyant palettes, composed not so much of color, but a careful execution of paint, patinas, fabrics, textures, and fixtures. As one moves about the space, there is a visual timing a credenza gleams one moment and is quieted by a taupe sofa, later offset by a glistening fixture. The elegant cadence Fitzsimmons achieves is what distinguishes this home from all others. Its current owners bought the house because they could walk everywhere. They have chosen well. This lucky couple is, literally, steps from downtown and Eastport and, especially during the boat shows, in the center of it all. Kitchen or interior designers are involved in each and every one. A kitchen designer can help one select creative custom cabinetry and special details that met their own individual needs. BY RENEE HOUSTON ZEMANSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEOFFREY HODGDON When an Annapolis homeowner contacted Mark White, owner of Kitchen Encounters, to help her with her dream kitchen, she already knew the basics of what she wanted. White had designed a kitchen for her previous home in 2003. Having relied on the talents of Interior Concepts and Purple Cherry Architects to help plan the structure, layout, and aesthetics of the interior design, she came to White to finalize the details and transform her vision into reality. The ultimate goal was a kitchen that was high-functioning, light, and bright. To shape that vision, White worked with the team to cover all the bases, creating areas for cooking, prepping, eating, and gathering. What makes this kitchen stand out are three separate work zones, which allow for multiple cooks to help with entertaining. On the practical side, a six-burner range with a griddle, positioned across from the large farmhouse apron sink, takes care of the cooking needs. Modern amenities such as a mixer lift at the end of the island, a pot-filler behind the range, and a microwave drawer built into the cabinets were all on the homeowner’s wish list. These two “super zones,” created specifically for her needs, allow the homeowner to prep, bake, and cook an entire meal. The cabinet doors are a full 1" thick rather than the standard 3/4" to give the recessed panel a deeper set and to make the cabinets feel more substantial. Off the main kitchen, we find a smaller productive third zone: a secondary kitchen or butler pantry with the same countertops and cabinetry used in the main kitchen. To make sure the smaller area didn’t feel too tight, White incorporated open shelving. A French door oven makes it easier to keep the mess out of the main area—a touch which the homeowner refers to as her favorite addition. The space also includes a microwave speed cooker and a warming drawer. Across from the work area and oven, an extensive pantry provides even more storage. The kitchen, living, and dining areas are all open to one another and unified by ceiling beams that draw the eye to the kitchen’s focal point: a massive range hood with cast pewter embellishments. White drew further attention to the hood by balancing the cabinets on either side. Vol. 11, No. 1 2020 47

“We made the two cabinets next to the hood deeper so that the crown molding would have a return for emphasis around the hood. It’s part of creating a strong focal point,” White explained. Near the range and hood, White added glass mullion doors to create more of a hutch appearance with the cabinets. “The mullion pattern is one of the unique things we did in the kitchen to create overlapping circle patterns. We worked with the cabinet manufacturer, Bentwood Luxury Kitchens, to get it just right. The mullion pattern on the main doors is complemented by the pattern on the smaller doors up top and repeated around the room,” said White. In the hutch area, a third zone features built-in refrigerator drawers that provide easy access for snacks and drinks—a supplement to the full-size, built-in refrigerator and freezer that flank the doorway. To bring in warmth, grays were pulled in against a clean white backdrop of white custom cabinetry and Carrara marble countertops. The result: a light-filled, welcoming space with clearly defined areas for cooking and entertaining. The homeowner says 48

that the new kitchen brings all the warmth and features of her previous kitchen. Whether making small meals for family or entertaining a crowd, the updates and tweaks now ensure that she can get into the perfect zone and make it all happen. AH

As the source for daily meals and nibbles, we want functionality, but also pleasing aesthetics— especially for those of us who entertain. This central gathering space benefits from comfortable and well-appointed seating options, as well as easy access and flow to and from other main living areas. And if there’s a stunning view of the outdoors to be had, we want to be able to gaze upon it, uninterrupted, from a perch in our kitchen. Tall order? We found a sensational kitchen a mere stone’s throw from the water in Oxford, Maryland, that delivers on all fronts. Bearing a classic coastal look, with white walls and furniture subtly accented by touches of nautical blue, this kitchen complements, rather than competes with, the beauty of its grand view of the Tred Avon River. INTENTIONAL DESIGN The kitchen’s symmetrical layout offers the same effect. If you gaze from the back wall in the kitchen out into the open living space, you can follow its perfectly aligned path from the kitchen’s two parallel islands, over which light fixtures are perched atop in unison, to the living area where a fireplace—precisely proportionate to the kitchen islands—lines the back wall. This was no accident, acknowledges principal architect Cathy Purple Cherry. “Everything has a center alignment”—a deliberate design choice that, she notes, lends serenity to the entire space. In fact, nothing was left to chance in this kitchen. Consider the two islands, each with its own sink. It’s an unusual but brilliant choice by the homeowner, who entertains frequently. She knew that doubling up on this essential feature would allow family members and guests to linger in the kitchen, as they so often tend to do, while still leaving her enough space to move about freely in the same space. Four identical light fixtures float above the kitchen, defining the area as well as providing ample light for preparing food. Another deliberate and functional aspect of the islands, which may seem incidental to the untrained eye, is reflected in the way they are positioned. “As design professionals, we try to run our kitchen islands perpendicular to the water, so if they sit at them, you can see it,” Purple Cherry says. The kitchen’s symmetry and clutter-free nature create a winning combination. The hidden element that makes this clean aesthetic possible is the “back kitchen.” Literally abutting the other side of the kitchen’s back wall and affectionately referred to as the “blue pantry,” it provides an entire beverage area: ice maker, wine fridge, and more. “It’s all about people staying out of the prep area,” Purple Cherry notes. COORDINATED EFFORT Like any relationship, the one among designer, architect, and client takes time to develop. The fact that interior designer Marika Meyer had already worked with the Oxford client on a prior home project provided a significant advantage to the highly collaborative process, which Purple Cherry says was incredibly smooth.

Cabinets built into the kitchen islands cleverly hide all necessary items while reducing the need for wall cabinetry. “I already had a sense of the color palette, patterns, and textures that were successful for this client,” Meyer acknowledges. Meyer points to the dominant color in the kitchen, a clean shade of white, as one of the client’s strong preferences. “People look to white for clarity and cleanliness,” she says. It also works well to support the more detailed cabinetry, another of the client’s evident passions. Overall, the kitchen’s subtle appearance serves a broader purpose. “We really try to keep the kitchen design itself quiet to allow noise in the kitchen,” Meyer says. That noise to which Meyer is referring? It’s the sound of chatter and laughter from the family and friends who gather there. “I see a lot of enjoyable memories being created in this kitchen,” she says. Joni Zimmerman, founder of Annapolis-based Design Solutions, is celebrating 40 years in the kitchen design business. When she got her start in 1979, the kitchen was a very utilitarian, single-function room with square cabinets, typically bought in lumberyards. “Nobody knew what a kitchen designer was,” she says. Her career began in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, followed by stints in Florida, central New Jersey, Baltimore, and finally, in the mid-’80s, Annapolis. She has witnessed kitchen design evolve from its beginnings in functional design to today, where aesthetics are just as important as function. “It is kind of fun, feeling that I had grown up in the industry as the whole concept of the kitchen changed for the home,” states Joni. She reminisces about kitchen trends over the years: the cherry kitchen, the white kitchen, the light-wood kitchen, the two-color kitchen. “We went from two colors to—oh my goodness—I have a kitchen I had eight colors in. But you wouldn’t know it, because there were subtle changes between colors and wood tones,” she explains. “But you know it can be subtle. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Now our kitchens have to add balance versus stand alone. It all depends on how integrated it is into the other rooms, in my opinion.” The importance of balance and how to achieve it without being totally symmetrical is the keystone to Joni’s design aesthetic. “I’ve learned to work with asymmetrical balance really well. It certainly plays up with certain things that I’ve learned through trends and how to push design so that it doesn’t have to be predictable. You can mix things together in interesting ways and still have it work really well,” she says. Vol. 11, No. 1 2020 55

Joni has a theory of design that informs layout decisions. “My first thought process is: ‘Where do you want to interact with the rest of the world?’ That could be the people in your home and your company, or the outdoors. And that’s basically where you start your kitchen. Then you ask, ‘What are the other elements that I need to be very, very convenient?’—and you figure out where those go. To me, that is the ideal way of approaching design.” Then she applies a theory she calls Layered Design. This is the thoughtful mix of focal points and supporting elements that stand alone, yet work well together. “Overall, you see a main attraction, and the more you look, you see another layer of something interesting and another layer and another layer.” For example, consider her own kitchen, a recent renovation on Oak Creek near St. Michaels—one that she shares with Dave Nilsson, her fiancé. To reveal its waterfront location and make a view of the creek a part of her kitchen experience, Joni had to remove walls and reconfigure windows and doors. This is a small space rendered exquisite under Joni’s capable guidance. She masterfully mixes colors, surfaces, and materials like an improvising jazz musician. 56

A nifty custom shelf floats above the kitchen island, providing more work and storage space. Built-in cabinets are balanced with stand-alone pieces. The command center is the dynamic pairing of her Galley Workstation sink, where all of the work of the kitchen takes place, and her deep blue cast iron Aga gas range, with its glorious white and brass geometric tile backsplash. All the component parts of this kitchen are within steps of each other, making for an efficient design. This is a deeply personal room, one that Joni intends to be her ultimate kitchen, filled with pieces made by friends and colleagues spanning her career. Joni loves her kitchen. “Designing something so that it’s aesthetically pleasing to you makes the emotional component also an important aspect. That’s where you’re trying to bridge both of those together.” Balance, interaction with the world, and personal aesthetics. That’s what 40 years of designing kitchens is all about. The architects’ peers select the winning projects through an anonymous judging process. We open the AIA awards with the Woods residence, a private home in Easton, MD. The home received the highest award for a residential remodel. The designers transformed a typical colonial style home, with many dark and small rooms, into a clean, open, light-filled contemporary home, beautifully integrated into the landscape. Shinberg Levinas Architects, based in Washington D.C., re-designed the home, Tim Saulsbury Construction served as the general contractor, and Oehme, van Sweden & Associates designed the landscape. The project required removing the old ceiling and completely renovating the interior, including adding a new custom kitchen, living spaces, bedrooms, exterior deck and pergola, and designing the exterior landscaping. This home demonstrates how an expert team of designers is able to turn an indistinct structure into an exceptionally designed home that opens and responds to the waterfront landscape. 60

In preparation for the project, the team researched sauna (and sweat lodge) traditions throughout the world. This research directly impacted the design of the sauna which abstractly references those traditions while simultaneously reflecting vernacular farm outbuildings from the region.
Hodson Boathouse provides a new and vastly improved home for the water sports activities that have been located on a small parcel at the waterfront since the 1970s, while also providing a new recreational home on the Chester River for members of the Washington College and Chestertown community.

The iconic Annapolis Yacht Club burned down in 2015. Although the interior retains a similar configuration to its pre-fire arrangement with three main dining spaces over three levels, the open stair that connects the spaces was enhanced and relocated, and now provides dramatic overlooks to Spa Creek and the Eastport bridge.
A 650-square-foot 1930s shack in Herald Harbor is replaced with a 1250-square-foot waterfront retreat on the Severn River, with new landscape, hardscape and structure.

appy New Year, friends! My colleague Elizabeth Davis and I were talking about all the wonderful and unusual bulbs out there. We agreed we all should know about them. With this in mind, she suggested I call this column Bulbs Beyond the Daffodil, and I heartily agreed. Now, I don’t mean to put down the lovely daffodil. My garden is crammed with them! I can’t get enough! But there is also a larger world out there. I share a few interesting bulbs here as well as an insider tip from Miguel Tejada, production manager at Walnut Hill Landscape Company. He says that “if the ground is soft and you can dig down a few inches, keep planting,

even after frost.” Those bulbs will indeed come up in the spring. To me, this is the green light I have been waiting for! So, when that warm January or February day comes your way, plant away! I just ordered and received Foxtail Lily, suggested by my neighbor Cody Gleason, who admires their spectacular feathery beauty. I planted them in early December in a small garden we designed last fall. I will keep you posted on their progress! In the meantime, check out this magical lily and some other uncommon bulbs that will grow well in Maryland. AH

Jeff Jacob’s family has owned Carrol’s Creek in Annapolis since 1983. Located right on Spa Creek, with a stunning view of sailboats and downtown Annapolis, this place deserves to be on everyone’s go-to list for dining in Annapolis. Consider what a lovely evening we had. We went on a recent Monday when one would imagine the restaurant scene to be somewhat quiet. Not so at Carrol’s Creek. The tables were filled with families and groups of friends enjoying a holiday meal, with more diners arriving as the night progressed. We wanted to try Carrol’s Creek’s most popular dishes. The baked oysters are cheesy, with hints of bacon and horseradish. You can tell the oysters are prepared fresh: farmed on the Eastern Shore’s Harris Creek, these oysters still have brine in the shell. They are delicious. The restaurant participates in the oyster recovery partnership. The award-winning cream of crab soup is rich, with generous morsels of crab meat. It’s rather thick; perhaps a splash more of the promised sherry would lighten and brighten it up a bit. Empanadas filled with beef, mushrooms, and gouda are prepared with a deft hand, as evidenced by the light pastry, guacamole, and pepper sauce. Chef Ricardo Bello certainly knows his way around an empanada. A pan-seared scallop dish, with its accompanying pea risotto and butternut squash hash, is elevated with an otherworldly chive truffle oil. If you are a truffle fan, this is the dish for you. By far, the most exquisite dish we ordered was the rockfish fillet. An herbed crust seals in the tender juices of this local fish and renders it delightful. With risotto, spinach, lumps of jumbo crab meat, and a beurre blanc sauce, this treatment of rockfish is a home run. Yes, the choices we made from the menu were on the rich side, but that isn’t to say that there aren’t lighter options to be had. One could try the Cioppino, the chicken breast, or one of the salads. We were amused by the “Coffee and Donuts” Bread Pudding and had to give it a try—for research purposes, of course (a quote from John, our server)! The combination of glazed donut bread pudding with homemade coffee chocolate chip ice cream and a salty bourbon caramel sauce short-circuited all our taste buds for the night. All I can say is, it’s really, really fine. And perfect to share. Throughout the evening, the Sonoma County Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvée red wine blend was a particular delight. Recommended by John, it enhanced everything we ordered. Carrol’s Creek is highly aware of dietary restrictions, and the menu reflects this. They are completely nut-free. The menu also notes all dishes that are gluten-free and includes one vegan item. They seem to go the extra mile to ensure that their food can be enjoyed by almost everyone. A meal at Carrol’s Creek is dining for the joy of a gourmet experience. With its well-considered flavors, a talented chef, and fine service, this is a recipe for excellence. AH
