ACADEMIC PROJECTS

MAM Mechanical Arts Museum

Manifesto on Technology:

Technology’s role is architecture have been significantly improving throughout time. However, technology should be used in our favor to create a better world by improving our lifestyle, but we rely on it for wrong reasons. Even though i think we should make a better use of technology, I am optimiste with the use of it in the future because of its multipurpose potential to improve our buildings.

Concept:

Cultural Diversity

Concept Statement:

The MIT Campus offers a variety of architecture diverstity around campus. Walking around, I found buildings that caught my attention and got me thinking of combining those different elements into one building. The teaching museum for the mechanical arts blends those architectural elements by creating shadows, open spaces, and a unique experience for students and visitors.

The project responds to the city’s tight housing market and rising demand, creating a sustainable, community-focused model that blends history with modern living.

Scenario B was selected, featuring full rehabilitation of the Head House and Drill Hall, a new double-loaded corridor building replacing the Maintenance Shop and Garage, ground-level parking in both structures, new dormers for housing within the Drill Hall’s gable roof, and preservation of the Pleasant Street garage wall.

Four housing scenarios were developed for the 1.29-acre historic Armory site, with Scenario B and C advanced to create mixed-income housing while retaining the Headhouse and Drill Hall for Historic Tax Credit eligibility.

GENERAL PLAN

SECTION B 1/200

As mentioned, the plans haven’t changed since 1907; However, the plans and sections give an idea of divided room prayers throughout the mosque. The open gathering space has new technological features with sun-shading sensors to make people comfortable due to sun exposure. Also, we can see separate rooms for men and women to offer privacy for believers.

SECTION C 1/200

The mosque counts multiple Islamic architectural features such as gold ornaments, mashrabiya, and pointed arches. These features emphasize power, wealth, and cultural heritage in Islam; Therefore, it was important for the architect to design a safe space for believers in order to satisfy their needs and comfort
