Design Vision
• A resilient and sustainable neighbourhood against flooding and climate change, built on access to waterbodies and keen interest in protecting and enhancing their prominence.
• Historic industrial built form and heritage to be respected and juxtaposed with new built typologies for blue and green characters.
• High quality public space and amenity, with significance biodiversity net gain.
Design Objectives
1. Reduce runoff peak and volume (quantity) by imitating the natural hydrological cycle featuring at small to large scale, i.e. from house unit, building to neighbourhood scale
2. Induce natural treatment for runoff quality by utilising landscape features to encourage multilayer-treatment techniques, and promote accessibility to the features for recreational and educational purposes
3. Provide amenities and high-quality public realms that underpin residents’ well-being, safety, active lifestyle and social and cultural activities
4. Enrich biodiversity in both total surface habitat area and connectivity between each habitat
5. Reinstate a green and blue character to both the historic and newly developed built environment
1. Utilise vertical space and integrate SuDS techniques into existing and new buildings or structures from small to large scales
2. Attractive and community-driven new surface open space integrated with green and blue elements boosting a vibrant and liveable townscape
3. Synergise a connected network of green streets (corridors)
Masterplan concept
All three design strategies enable different growth areas, using either vertical space, surface space or lateral space, hence potentially involving a distinct yet overlapping range of SuDS options. They counteract a set of site constraints and complement each other. Ideally, the opportunities to concurrently consider all three strategies into a common vision do prevail, which is elaborated in the masterplan concept and the final masterplan.
