"
The amount of and range of high quality design that Ryan A+E is producing is impressive! I pay attention to this, yet way more is happening behind the scenes than I was aware of and I expect the same is true for most at Ryan. Seeing this all curated as a years worth of work was fun and inspiring. I am impressed!" - Mike Ryan, AIA, Northern Division President
CELEBRATING DESIGN EXCELLENCE INNOVATION. PASSION. COLLABORATION.
The Elevation Awards, Ryan's internal design award competition, celebrate and honor the work of Ryan's Architecture, Interior Design, Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture team members. The award is separated into four categories including Built (Projects completed after January 1, 2021); On the Boards (Projects currently in design); Unbuilt (Projects in early conception or projects that didn’t move forward); and Wildcard (Projects or aspects of projects that demonstrate excellence in process, communication, or execution). Award packages were limited to eight pages, which required project teams to get creative in highlighting the uniqueness of the project's process and final product. The jury of Ryan Leaders offered diverse perspectives and included Mike Ryan (North Division President), Kirk Monroe (President Rocky Mountain Region), Molly Carson (Senior VP, Southwest Market Leader), and JP Bacariza (Senior VP, Tampa Market Leader). After thoughtful evaluation and review of 25 project submittals, eight projects were recognized as Elevation Award winners. Thank you to everyone who participated in making the 2023 Elevation Design Awards a success.

CORPORATE OFFICE
This proposed design consolidated the client’s existing office buildings scattered throughout the city into a single campus. Focused on the creation and reinforcement of collaboration, wellness, comfort, flexibility and productivity for all users, the office buildings surround a town square plaza in the center. Along with the site amenities, outdoor balcony spaces occur on every level of the buildings and allow users to have flexibility in choosing work spaces.

Using a prototype designed by another architect, our Ryan team adjusted the designs to reflect the unique surroundings of these two locations. By modifying the overall footprint, using local landscaping and exterior materials focused on reinforcing a central design concept (Sacramento's facility the city's urban forest and Thornton's nod to the Rocky Mountains), the new centers embraced the parameters of the client's prototype design while also customizes to the context of each specific site.

PEOPLE'S CH OICE LABORATORY & OFFICE
Global Citrus Innovation Center is a 27,000 SF laboratory dedicated to citrus-based flavors and fragrances on Florida Polytechnic University’s campus. The architectural design speaks to the rich history of European orangeries with its exaggerated single-story height and rhythmic fenestation patters. The stereotypical sterile laboratory spaces are challenged with large windows, a skylight over sixty-five feet in length, large operable partitions, wood tones, and preserved plantings.
VISUAL STORY TELLING Ryan’s integrated process is typically fast paced and requires quick design iterations that may feel as though they magically come to life and final design solutions can seem to just appear. In reality, the design process is iterative, creative and process based. Our design teams are evaluating and responding to a wide variety of factors ranging from cost to code to environmental variables, and each element influences the design outcome. Efficiently conveying the process of what has been considered within these design iterations is the key to fully understanding how a project might be ultimately successful or not. The use of clear diagrams, engaging graphics and imagery helps drive emotion and can guide our clients and partners to visualize the reality of their project vision and the progression of how the design vision has been translated into a tangible reality. The Elevation Design Awards challenged our design teams to think back through the process to create a compelling, complete story of how various decisions led to the ultimate design.

SPORTS ARENA
The University of St. Thomas' new multipurpose arena supports its students and student athletes at a variety of scales. From commencement to hockey and basketball games, the design showcases its flexibility to adapt for different uses without compromising on spectator and student athlete experiences. From a fueling station to study spaces and strength training and practice facilities, this building considers the needs of each and every one of its stakeholders.

MULTI TENANT OFFICE
The C-shaped office building is organized around a central motorcourt with access to below grade parking. The form of the building slopes up from south to north to give a dramatic presence and provide a unique opportunity to incorporate a green roof or solar infrastructure. The minimalist material palette centers around black steel, brushed metal, and wood. A perforated metal screen at the top of the exterior facade transforms the building's daytime heaviness into a light and airy lantern in the evening.

CONTROLLED-ENVIRONMENT FOOD PRODUCTION
The design team presented three exterior options aligned to this client's request for a bold nod to their brand. (1) Client taglines featured on a lenticular wall with an array of vertical fins that are easily viewed from the road. (2) Vegetated facade relates to the inner workings of the facility with a panelized screen supporting local plant growth and bird and insect habitats. (3) Amphitheater for employee and public gatherings where a layer of wood steps below the fins warp to create a space that is integrated into the building's facade.

Vyne on Haven is a transit oriented development currently under construction on an urban in-fill site in the historic downtown of Elmhurst - a suburb of Chicago. The design evolved with neighborhood input to be more sensitive to the surrounding context. After a series of massing iterations, the final design creates a building scale that feels cohesive with the existing neighbors. Green space and plants, reduces street parking and makes the street more pedestrian and cyclist friendly.

SUCCESS DOESN'T JUST MEAN IT IS PRETTY Every day at Ryan, design decisions are taking place. Decisions are made for a variety of reasons and are rooted in what makes a building function best for our client – whether focused on team trust, aesthetic impact, operational function and so on. Most industry design awards are focused almost exclusively on the aesthetic quality of projects, and give limited weight to the context or broader project impact. The goal of Ryan's Elevation Awards is to create an opportunity for projects to be recognized for total project success, not just simply aesthetics. Many of Ryan's projects are unique, either in scale, product type or delivery challenges, and our definition of success may look different from a traditional industry award. This award program provides a venue for telling stories about how our designers solve problems our clients would have never seen coming, how to navigate the challenges of multiple stakeholder groups, or how to navigate design changes with the proforma changes half way through design development.

CARDIOVASCULAR CLINIC & LAB
The 72,000-SF Cardiovascular Care Center is born from Mercy’s vision to create an innovative, streamlined, high-quality, accessible place for all things heart-health. The facade of the heart center starkly contrasts the traditional red brick predominately used on the Mercy Campus, suggesting modernity and leading-edge healthcare. While subtle details like the cross-shaped regression in the brick and a modern interpretation of stained glass on the exterior give the subtle nod to Mercy’s ecclesiastic values.
