RXZ AT A GLANCE

American Richard X. Zawitz’s sculptures embrace numerous aesthetic and philosophical ideas rooted in many Asian cultures. His works give us pause to Contemplate afresh our emotional relationship with sculpture.

Born in Pittsburgh,Richard X. Zawitz’s road of sculptural discovery and Invention began with his early art Education: first at the University of Pittsburgh (1967–1968), then at the University of Hawaii (1969–1973), where He began to ‘embrace Asia,” and where He majored in sculpture and minored in Asian art history and Asian philosophy. His mentors, the materials, the literature, and his yearning to travel then were, and still are, profound influences on his artistic philosophy as well as Simply what it means to be an artist working “to enlightened to delight” and to “change lives through sculpture.”

The singular artistic voice is a rarity: Zawitz has it. Compelled by a searching personality he has made elegant and lyrical sculptures that speak to a bold calligraphic sense of line and form and to a wide range of philosophical and spiritual questions, from humankind’s place within the universe to the personal nature of creativity. At the same time, Zawitz also deals with the quotidian realitiesof our environment of nature’s extraordinarypower and its fragility, and people’s influence on these, which lends many of his sculptures a natural force and a disconcerting intensity.

With each new work Zawitz does not repeat himself; rather he renews the challenge of his materials in the endless curve and Mobius-like drama of his line through space: his sculptural narratives glide through the air as thick snake-like forms. This progression is clear from his earliest works in wood, marble, and alabaster to his most recent monumental stainless steel. His earliest sculptural experiences still inform his art practice.

RXZ A WORD OR TWO

My work since the late 1960s has been devoted to the essences and energies which first became manifest to me through Chinese Taoism and then through the entire alchemical pantheon of the form and formlessness of Asian philosophy and metaphysics.

There are three aspects to life –the physical, intellectual and the spiritual as in the world of things, the world of thought and the world of feelings. Some of these are present in all forms of life but it is only in man that all three come together in body, mind and spirit.

My studies and experiences led me to hypothesise the existence of one essential particle of matter which in turn led to my discovery of the “Tangle Particle” which manifests itself in two distinct and parallel ways and is explained through science and humanism.

It is the combination of all three that gives us the capacity to believe, to reason and to create. The traditional hierarchy of man’s needs is based on a solid platform of physiological needs with safety, love and belonging, esteem and self actualisation in ascending order above them. I believe that creativity, and the drive to become everything that one is capable of becoming, is in fact a basic need that must be met or there will be an imbalance in nature. I see the lack of balance in global affairs and the general shift towards a negative environment as evidence of this and therefore believe that the need to create, and facilitate creativity, is greater than ever.

Expo Park, ShenZhen Expo Bay, Feb,2022

World’s Largest Convention Centre

Richard X Zawitz was selected as the principal sculptor to create four monumental works of art for the world’s largest convention centre.

World renowned sculptor Richard X Zawitz has installed four magnificent monumental sculptures on the grounds of the Shenzhen Expo Bay that truly blend with the environment.

Four artworks, four dimensions. They dance in the universe, some of the works lose gravity in the universe, some of them ow a small boat in the universe, and some cycle endlessly in the universe. Each space gives a clue for people to explore. Look for the infinite possibilities of each work story.

“We are thrilled to have Mr Zawitz Infinity and Tao sculptures sourrounding our campus with its magical positive energy sculptures. These works of art are the final and critical element to make ShenZhen Expo Bay a world class social and business environment”

“Infinite Anti-Gravity is the first in a series that may well be my most successful work. I truly feel I am working with a paradigm means of expression in four dimensions. These works are incredibly wonderful to be built and created. “Infinite AntiGravity”appears to defy gravity. We humans perceive time and space and gravity as unseen forces. It is through the Tao we truly understand nature.” Said Richard X Zawitz.

“When I first saw Richard x Zawitz’s works at the Shanghai Art Fair in 2019, I was moved by the artist’s idea of integrating East and West. His works are highly interactive and ornamental. At the exhibition site, children are encouraged to give full play to their potential infinite imagination and create anything in the form of the infinite surrounding of works, It is highly consistent with the concept of “art into life” advocated by ShenZhen Expo Bay. “ ShenZhen Expo Bay Art Director ToMAS -

As the world’s largest exhibition center, Shenzhen Expo Bay is not only an architectural spectacle on a broad spatial scale. It is like a never-ending commercial feast. A wide range of goods attracts attention in the carefully designed booth. Bustling merchants come here from all over the world to establish connections and return with full loads.

Richard x Zawitz studied Oriental philosophy in his early years and organically integrated it into his creative ideas. The concept of “infinity” seems to be general, but with the help of sculpture language, it reproduces the characteristics of communication, connection, integration and symbiosis of exhibition formats. Their free dancing posture crosses the cultural barrier, brings a pleasant viewing experience to every space participant of different nationalities and identities, and reflects artist’s understanding and exploration of the concepts of “Infinity” and “Tao”.

Yellow Box Art Museum

QingDou, China

“For me this is an inspiration for life. All of our lives have structure, limitation, boundaries, rules. To live is to find the boundless new from the inevitable limitations we each face.” Richard X Zawitz said.

Qingdou Yellow Box Art Museum invited over 60 artists to present the opening exhibition in 2021, Infinity Tree by Richard X Zawitz was selected as signature piece of the show.

The archetype of the Infinity Tree represents the longevity tree of life or vitality. The spirit monkey climbing down from the Infinity Tree is the evolutionary process from which we began to become erect apes. Human nature is a course of continuous evolution in a journey without an end. We wise men have the right to Determine our own destiny, do we selfdestruct or use our creativity to thrive? The artist believes that through our own creativity, we can evolve together with nature.

Civilization and the Monkey: Why we are here! Why are we here? 07 EXHIBITION

The Rotunda, Exchange Square

25th Oct to 10th 2016

Richard X Zawitz will be launching his most ambitious, dynamic and inspirational solo exhibition to date. The unprecedented sculptural Installation will present an Exceptionally innovative combination of art and science, to explore human civilization through the lens of our primate ancestors.

Richard X Zawitz explains, “I wish to immerse the audience on an artistic adventure that invites them to think about what it means to be human, why we are here, to speculate on the human drama as it unfolds in many dimensions. I hope that these vividly rendered sculptures will provoke and inspire all of us to feel, and be more creative. I believe this compelling energy alone will instill positivity onto our exquisite planet. Only then, will we get closer to finding the truth about why are we here?”

“My art is more at home in Asia than it is in America,” he says. “There’s more sensitivity towards it here [and] I have a very nice environmental relationship with Hong Kong.” Aside from challenging people’s perceptions, Zawitz hopes that audiences can simply enjoy the art and be inspired. “I really hope I can provoke, inspire, compel and initiate feelings of creativity,”

“This is more than just an exhibition,” says Zawitz. “This is going to be a sculptural play. Each of the figures represents something very important in civilisation.” With monkey heads and bodies shaped in the form of Zawitz’s signature curves, each of his new creations references significant historical, cultural and scientific archetypes, ranging from female beauty and commerce to sport and creativity, to list but a few.

Having grown up in 1950s America, art education was lacking for Zawitz. But then along came the 60s and the hippie movement, which allowed him to discover his creative side. “I’m in the first wave of the baby boomers,” he says. “By 1966, I was already tuned in, turned on and dropped out.” Around the same time, Zawitz was introduced to the philosophy and works of Chinese Taoist master Chan Wing-tsit. He was inspired and discovered an inner urge to create. “With a hammer and chisel of all things,” the artist exclaims. “It was always going to be sculpture.

For all his talk of toughness, Zawitz is also the inventor of a sinuous style called curvism. “Curvism is an object that curves, but from a creative point of view,” he says, “Even from my very earliest sculpture, I found myself making bulbous, rounded shapes and shapes that curve.” As a creative, Zawitz believes in inspiring audiences to re-evaluate their worldviews, particularly with this new show. “I want to get people thinking about why they’re here and to be more compassionate,” he says. “We are here to be creative, not destructive,” he adds. Initially, Zawitz struggled to tie the theme, the monkeys and the venue together while ‘amusing all the jaded people of Hong Kong’. After decades of creating art, Zawitz shows no signs of stopping and is always looking to create bigger and better sculptures. “It’s so rewarding to make giant things,” he remarks. “I love making giant things!”

I’m not going to make something really weird and have people guess what it is”
THE RXZ MEDIA GUIDE 34

Zawitz is particularly excited to showcase his new sculptures here in Hong Kong, a city’s he’s been closely involved with for the past 20 years. So much so, he has even set up a studio in Wong Chuk Hang. “I really hope I can provoke, inspire, compel and initiate feelings of creativity,” he tells us. “I want to have people walk away and say ‘wow’.

My goal as a creative is to project more creativity to the world. I want to change the course of history with creativity.” He also encourages viewers to touch the art and fully experience his work.

Spend five minutes playing with Richard X. Zawitz’s Tangle Creations and you’ll be hooked. The, actually smaller-scale models of Zawitz’s fine art sculptures, are made of interlocked 90-degree curves that can be twisted and bent into a plethora of poses. The process of winding and twisting the pieces is addicting, perhaps more than it should be because no matter how hard you try to make something useful from the shining forms, they evade any common functionality. The brand partnered with Zawitz on handles inspired by the Tangles for its Spring 2016 bags, and the results are as arresting as the sculptures themselves.

His Tangles have been worn by Grace Jones and Michael Jackson, who sported a large-scale version in L’Uomo Vogue’s cover storylensed by Bruce Weber.

Richard saw a traditional Tibetan endless knots in a temple; it was at that moment an inspiration flashed into his mind.

It happened that Richard was back to his studio in Hong Kong from the US, I seized this opportunity to talk to him in person about aesthetics and philosophy. The room is full of silvery sculptures as well as a series of newly created artworks, which are wood and stone carvings of Chinese style.

Having strong interest in Chinese culture since he was small, Richard was specialised in sculpture and Taoist philosophy when he was studying in the University of Hawaii. He recalled that he made his first step into the realm of art because of his first wife, who was born into a family of artists. In those days, Richard, having the characteristics of hippy, loved freedom and was keen to pursue everything that he was passionate about.

Upon graduation, he travelled to several places such as Tibet, Japan, India, and Nepal, etc. to learn wood and stone carving. Eventually, he got inspired during a trip to Nepal in 1973. In the course of crossing the Himalayas,

Richard saw a traditional Tibetan endless knots in a temple; it was at that moment an inspiration flashed into his mind. From then on, Richard started creating a series of sculptures and named it Infinity, which is to convey the thoughts of Taoism and “power thinking” through art.

Let’s share something about your cooperation with J.W. Anderson that is rarely known to others.

At first, J.W. Anderson contacted us and initiated a cooperation of a series in the next season. From ornaments to printings, you can always find the patterned element of Infinity. The main point is, the Brand has introduced a new handbag design that used sculpture as the handles. And I’ve also lent out a sculpture of Infinity to be displayed in the showroom of J.W. Anderson, which also serves as a decoration for photo-shooting.

What is infinity?

To me, infinity is not an complex mathematical formula, impossible to understand, or an ontological philosophical concept for scholars and thinkers to debate, infinity to the artist is we, the Human Species. We are the only being capable of understanding the concept of endless or limitless life and space. After all, have you met a monkey or an elephant or bird or dog or dolphin (all highly intelligent beings) that can express such a concept as infinity?

Although Richard X Zawitz is gray-haired and at age 60, he is always full of energy and cheer. His creations devoted to Chinese Tao and Buddhism Zen. Richard X Zawitz, born in USA, said he was interested in Chinese culture since he was little. While studied fine art in the university, he used to attend the Asian Philosophy courses and had unique feeling towards to Tao in his first philosophy course.

The creation use monkey, one of 12 Chinese zodiac, as a theme. Among 12 Chinese zodiac, monkey is the most spiritual, the smartest and the most creative animal as well as his favorite animal, the symbol of luck and full of energy. The meaning of the Tree of Infinity is the endless of life, good health and good luck. One of the gold lucky monkey under Tree of Infinity is even covered on gold leaves, the favor of Chinese people. By holding hands with “gold lucky monkey”, hope this can bring good luck and spreads out the positive energy and the blesses to others.

The meaning of color red is warm, flourishing and encouraging. When combined with the ethic symbol, it becomes the emblematic color for Chinese. As for the meaning of the color gold and silver, they are noble, honorable, luxury and magnificent. He chose the Chinese traditional colors, silver and gold color to go with Chinese lucky element in red color. Moreover, the gold lucky monkey under Tree of Infinity is even covered on gold leaves because Richard X Zawitz thinks that not only “gold” be the favorite element of Chinese people but also the “Tree of Infinity’ is lucky bless for Chinese people.

In love with metal and curves

Richard X Zawitz loves to use metal as the design material because he was born in the place where famous for metal manufactory in USA. He is familiar with metal since he was little. For that reason, he had special feeling in metal. He said that other than the positive influence in his childhood, long-term storage is another reason why Zawitz loves metal. He thinks “Tao” and “Infinity” are one and both have positive energy. The curve shape is a happy element and can give unlimited association, like the cloud, it is shown by the curve shape as well.

Ten naughty monkey sculptures displayed in the exhibition of Tree of Infinity and Ten Monkey Sculptures are like the monkey family, a strong and powerful father in protection position, a friendly mother in tender and passionate action, a grandfather with a relaxing manner. Richard X Zawitz thinks himself as a performer, and audiences can easily understand the meaning of his creations. Richard X Zawitz is an American sculptor and toy inventor, with the Fine Art major in University of Hawaii. After gained the BA degree in 1972, he went to Tibet, Japan, India and Nepal to learn how to do the wood and stone carving. In 1973, inspired by the Tibet infinity nod, he created a sculpture series called “Infinity” and invented the toy call “Tangle”. The toy “Tangle” is the art pieces that can freely rotate and combine. His products include toys, art pieces, furniture, etc.

The sculptures and furniture in the Infinity pattern and many wooden and stone carved Buddha statues are all over the workshop. American sculptor Richard Zawitz, who is also known as the Tanglemaster, has a mission. A grand one, if you will. Ad that is “to change the course of history by teaching and propagation creativity.” he says. Taoism opened up the path for Zawitz to get into Asian culture, philosophy and art. He thinks Tao and infinity are related, just like brothers.

He’s a gem trader turned toy entrepreneur and now sculptor, and from next week he’ll be a purveyor of positive vibes to Hong Kong shoppers. That’s the resume of artist Richard Zawitz, who will open an exhibition called Infinity and Tao in the IFC Mall in Central. Zawitz believes the show, which features his signature large-scale stainless steel sculptures, will produce positive energy for the shoppers perusing luxury shops. “Things with curves and waves give positive energy,” he said at his loft-style studio and gallery in Aberdeen. “The curve is everywhere in space, science and nature. It’s the most ubiquitous energy form.” His art is heavily influenced by the philosophy of Taoism, which he first learned about in 1967 and has since embraced.

Some of his latest works, which have not been shown in public before – such as Infinite Man, Infinite Woman, Infinite Group, Infinite Touch, Infinite Manifold and Alien Buddha – will grace the show. Zawitz sees a lot of violence, aggression and war in the world today. The so-called peacekeeping process has not been successful, he says

For his show at IFC Mall, he has also created a two metre scale model of the Hong Kong skyline. It has one addition: a “statue of Infinity” on the harbourfront, which Zawitz hopes will one day become a reality with a 40 metre version. Each sculpture has a story, Zawitz says. Part of the show at IFC will feature several three metre sculptures, including the artist’s Infiity Man and Infinity Women, which overlook a central object.

“Hopefully, for a moment, people will forget about spending money and experience art”

We are social beings, we can’t stand alone.” Zawitz said, He describes his works as” sculpturetainment” and confidently states his goal: “I will never be satisfied until every man, women and child on this planet feels and experiences the joy of the creative process.

MILANO COSTAS VOYATZ

Richard X Zawitz, in partnership with Pierandrei Associati, Technodelta Srl of Milano, and Baci & Abbracci have joined together to co-produce and launch a unique line of sculpture-based furniture and an innovative lighting system based on Zawitz’s Infinity Art.

The Infinity collection was launched earlier this year at the Salone D’ Mobili show in Milano, Italy and was well received by an extensive list of international buyers and designers. “Overwhelmed by the strong interest and the European demand for this collection, Richard X Zawitz said: “I finally see the first true marriage between sculpture with furniture & lighting…even after 28 years of innovation & development of Infinity Art”

I never imagined this collection would have been so timely and well understood as a breakthrough in contemporary aesthetics and design. Mr. Zawitz has evolved his mainstream art-based products far from its first origins as a hand-held, free-flowing movable sculpture piece, resents “continuous, potentially endless modularity.

Crossing over into the world of interior design was a natural progression for Zawitz unique pieces that are based on the Tibetan infinite knot, containing a pattern of interwoven lines with no beginning and no end that symbolizes infinite life and creation. It was this symbol that captivated and inspired him artistically and ultimately bore the creation of one of Zawitz’s major works: the Statue of Infinity. As part of this new Infinity collection: Art, Sky and Sun (two armchairs and a lighting system)are the first results of combining the ‘knot’ of stainless steel sections linked together in a seamless pattern that represents “continuous, potentially endless modularity.”

Pierandrei Associati, (well known for it’s major projects with Maserati, North Sails Retail in Milano, the Duomo Design hotel, and other major partners), has been a key partner in the design of the Infinity Collection or better known as finity Mobile” in Italy, establishing exclusive distribution for the collection in Europe to Baci & Abbracci design, a new

After attending Richard X Zawitz One Man Exhibition at the Ifc Mall, I was incredibly impressed with Richard’s work. The sculpture that was most impressed me was his “ Infinite Group”. This grouping of the five otherworldly monolithic steel Sculptures was an assemblage so incredibly unique. That is the reason Lane Crawford through my advice invited Richard to install these works in our One Island South Lobby. The reflections from the lighting on the steel are magical. Lane Crawford and myself are big fans of Richard X Zawitz work.

All the artists have stories behind them, so does Richard X Zawitz, one of the worldfamous sculptors in the current American Art industry. 70-year-old Zawitz was born and raised in Pittsburgh in 40s and 50s. Though it was the time the legend artist Andy revealing outstanding talent, the trend of art creation was not popular at that time, not to mention to choose being an artist as the career. For that matter, young Richard was impressed with doing art creation. He recalled and said with a smile that it was happened long time ago, even as far as I could think of. At that time, he was just a ten-year-old boy. All he thought at that moment was simply how to enjoy his life. In 1967, Richard was 21, but it was the important year in his life. He said that in 1967, America entered into the so-called Hippie Generation. The young generation started to rethink the limitation in the past and tried to break through the stereotypes and get rid of the traditional creeds. The things that were not encouraged to do it before, like art creation, were gradually accepted and identified in society. Being influenced on this new trend, at age of 21, Richard started to dig out the potential and the desire inside him, which was the art of sculpture. He went on and said that until now, the art creation not only has already taken most of his heart but is the greatest motivation that pushes him to move on because he believed that the art can make people and the world better. In his point of view, everyone shall access to art and this is as well as the goal he desired most to achieve in the arts.

MENS UNO FEATURE ARTICLE

It is never easy to use the sculptures to embody the thinking of mysterious Tao philosophy. However, Richard said that the inspiration would always be with him wherever his mind went in the process of doing the art creation, took the creations of monkey series as an example. The organizer has discussed the plan with him two years ago. He likes monkey so much that he said yes to the organizer without hesitation even under the condition of no idea at all. Then, he laid down and closed eyes to brainstorm how to work with this exhibition. What came to his mind first was that why he liked monkey so much? He figured out that it was because we are evolved from the same ancestors as the monkey and decided the theme of civil revolution. After deciding the theme of the display, he further want to decide what he

wanted to give the audiences through this exhibition? How could I do to guide people to think about it through my sculptures? Little by little, he came out the title of this exhibition “Civilization and The Monkey. Why We Are Here! Why Are We Here?” Richard hoped that his sculptures not only inspire and stimulate us to feel and promote our creativity, but also want the audiences to think about the meaning of “why are we here?”. The exploration in the development of human culture to bring out more positive influence to this world.

WORLD SULPTURE NEWS Acrticle

culpture demands to be touched. This is something Richard Zawitz appreciates. From the directness of figuration to the aesthetics of abstraction to the complexities of infinity and Tao, Zawitz says his “understanding of sculpture is that it is to be experienced tactilely.”1 Since his earliest works in wood and marble, of more than 40 years ago, Zawitz has made art that enchants the eye and stirs the imagination and stimulates the intellect. It is, as he says, part of his role as an artist andinnovator “to enlighten and to delight.” And in the manner of a thaumaturgist— a performer of miracles, a magician of sorts—he sees himself as “changing lives through my sculpture.”

The singular artistic voice is a rarity: Zawitz has it. Compelled by a searching personality he has made elegant and lyrical sculptures that speak to a bold calligraphic sense of line and form and to a wide range of philosophical and spiritual questions, from humankind’ place within the universe to the personal nature of creativity. At the same time, Zawitz also deals with the quotidian realities of our environment, of nature’s extraordinary power and its fragility, and people’s influence on these, which lends many of his sculptures a natural force and adisconcerting intensity. One work in particular stands out for its intensity: Infinite Living Man (2014). The plants growing within the sculpture’sspiraling stainless steelframe lends the work an organic power that, at first glance, is a touch unsettling but then is quickly seen asentirely natural. In thiswork Zawitz brings together a Japanese technology that combines foam and dirt in which to grow plants: here, over slow time, the plans will become one with the stainless steel. The essential natural reality of Infinite Living Man extends the ‘human’ dynamic of Zawitz’s earlier wireframe Infinite Man (2012).

“changing lives through my sculpture.”

In the act of making Richard Zawitz travels between reality and the threads of his dreams to educate. For him “infinity is in all of us and in all things we perceive. Man and his symbols are my raison d’être for being creative, a sculptor, and as a performer with public exhibitions. I want to spread the gospel of man and his symbols and the power of creativity as far

and as wide as I possibly can in this lifetime and beyond. Nature is our guiding force and pervading energy.

Humans are lost in a void. Why do humans pay vast sums to acquire and own art? [Because] there is power and energy to art. Creativity is infinite. I am on a relentless pursuit to manifest its spirit.”

Whether he is dealing with smooth polished stainless steel or the colorful and grotesque forms of his new Alien DNA series,Zawitz understands well that things change, that the creative process is uncertain.

He sees the uncertainty and transience of our journeys through Tao and Infinity, knowing that nature takes its own course and arrives on our doorsteps of its own volition, although, as Zawit says, we “must be open to energy and follow the flow.” Through his art Richard Zawitz has no problem arriving at the gates of our imaginations “to enlighten and to delight.”

Precious Feature Article

Zen sculptor Richard X. Zawitz has been obsessing with creating his twistable work Tangle since 1690s. He has recently created large-scale Tangle sculptures, which were featured in his solo exhibition “Infinity Art” at IFC Mall. The American artist has been a Hong Kong resident for over 40 years. He sets up Infinity Gallery in Wong Chuk Hang and San Francisco and spends his time between the two cities. Zawitz graduated from the University of Hawaii with a major in fine arts sculpture and sub majors in Asian art history and Asian philosophy. Perhaps this is why he’s so fascinated with Asia and Hong Kong naturally and spontaneously, just like the birth of Tangle.

Decades of Pertinence

“I discovered my interest in entangled and twisty particles when I was still in my high school in 1967, so I started designing my very first Tangle model. Then I learned about art and Chinese Taoism during college and I planned to create a piece of work that cold express the philosophy of Taoism. But it wasn’t until my trip to Nepal in 1973 then I was inspired by the Tibetan infinite knot to create a work that can be twisted and manipulated into different shapes.” Zawitz, whom believes in Taoism, thinks Tao is the origin of everything on earth and that it is everywhere. It carries the same meaning of the Tibetan infinite knot, which represents infinite power. He therefore started to create this piece of work once he was back to the States and introduced to the world Tangle when he moved to Hong Kong in early 1980s. So what exactly is Tangle? Like Taoism; Tangle is everything and nothing – it could be toy, art, decoration, souvenir, accessory, education tool or could be none of the above. It all depends on our own interpretation. To Zawitz, it illustrates the concept of WU Wei in Taoism, which literally means non-action or non-doing.

Transmitting Positive Energy

Zawitz’s invention of Tangle products have sold over 100 million globally and were sold out at Wal-Mart after its launch in 2003. As the inventor of Tangle who enjoys the sweet taste of success, Zawitz has never forgotten about himself being an artist. He added, “Both inventor and artist work on creation.

If you wat to create good works, you have to throw away your linear thinking; you need to be creative and turn the impossibility into reality.” Zawitz applies theconcept of Tangle to his large-scale sculptures, which are collected by various public organizations including University of Southern California, Dragon Centre and JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong.

As the first exhibition of the artist’s world tour, Zawitz specially created several new creations for the Infinity Art exhibition, such as Infinite Man, Infinite Woman, Infinite Group, and Infinite Touch, only to mention a few. “Curve means luck and fortune Chinese culture. I hope my works are inspirable while bringing immense positive energy to the audience,”

The great leveler

The day when a Zhang Xiaogang or a Liu Wei competes with Gucci bags and Louboutin heels for audience attention from the same store window may not be that far away.

The sculptor Richard X. Zawitz, whose show Civilization and the Monkey concluded last month at the Rotunda in Exchange Square at Central, probably won’t mind such an eventuality.

In March, Zawitz’s shiny, idiosyncratic metallic loops which playfully imitate the human form were part of a display showcasing pouch bags by JW Anderson at Colette in Paris. The Zeninspired “tangles”, which is Zawitz’s vtrademark style, were replicated in the design of the bag handles.

Zawitz seems unfazed by the fact that many in the audience came to check out the fashion accessory and got to see his sculptures by default. “What I like about exhibiting in malls is that there’re a lot of accidental discoveries by people perhaps less inclined to art,” says Zawitz. “Here you are reaching people who never go to museums, reaching a broader audience, bringing creativity to them.” He fondly recalls school children trooping down to his last show at the Exchange Square and how they made sketches of his sculptures, some of them scribbling “I love you, Richard” notes on the drawings. There was also a gentleman who walked up to the centerpiece, Zawitz’s abstract rendition of a tree. “He started praying
