Blister cards, which typically hold a single medication 30-day supply, are preferred for use in Long Term Care facilities due to their ease of handling, inspecting, and administering to patients. Compliance starts with medication time pass labels, which provide ease of medication administration. Also it is one of the cheapest ways from pharmacies to deliver medication in dose form. DOSIS has the capacity to run continuously for up to four hours unattended before restocking empty blisters. To minimize impact to pharmacy floor plans, the unit is a similar in size and shape to a vending machine or shallow refrigerator (26" L x 42" W x 78" H). A L60 can holds 60 unique medication canisters at a time, which allows for adding extra canisters in rotation based on your formulary needs. Each unit medication containers, DOSIS canister, has a capacity of 1000cc. Dr. Ann Hylton is a native of Butler, Pennsylvania.

She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University in 2007. After graduation, Dr. Hylton moved to Columbia, SC where she completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency as well as a PGY-2 residency specializing in Critical Care at Palmetto Health Richland. She has been board certified in pharmacotherapy since 2008.

Prior to joining the faculty at Appalachian College of Pharmacy, Dr. Hylton worked in an Intensive Care Unit developing clinical pharmacy services.

Dr. Hylton’s practice site with the Appalachian College of Pharmacy is located at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN where she provides clinical services in the Emergency Department. Her interests include sepsis management, sedation and delirium in the critically ill patient, and patient safety.

Dr. Hylton is the author of a case report published in American Journal of Health System Pharmacy in 2010. She is also an active member of American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Hylton spends her free time enjoying the beauty of East Tennessee with her husband Michael and their two dogs. She enjoys hiking, camping, skiing, and reading.

Welcome New Director of Experiential Education, Joan Hardman Dr. George MacKinnon

In June of 2013, the Roosevelt University College of Pharmacy was pleased to welcome a new Director of Experiential Education, Joan Hardman, BPharm, RPh.

For the past 14 years she has been the Director of Pharmacy Services at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Illinois where she lead a team of 70 associates including pharmacists, managers, pharmacy technicians, purchasers and administrative support staff for both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services. Joan has been a preceptor for students over the past 20 years and was a member of the College of Pharmacy’s Professional Council. Joan has remained active in both community and inpatient practice as well as professional organizations over the years.

Joan shares Roosevelt University’s vision that pharmacists will play an increasingly crucial role in patient-centered multidisciplinary healthcare. We are extremely grateful that she joined the existing team in the Office of Experiential Education and look forward to her contributions.

Florence Rome

P1 students who spend their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience rotation at the CVS site in West Hartford, CT have the pleasure of working with preceptor Florence Rome. Her unique background allows her to connect with students who have also immigrated to America and she truly appreciates their various cultures. Rome was born in Nigeria, attended high school in Switzerland and moved to America after she graduated. She earned her pharmacy degree from St. John’s University in 1987.

At her site, students focus on community practice and become familiar with the tasks involved in the day-to-day life of retail pharmacy. “After they are introduced to the pharmacy’s physical lay-out and our basic procedures, the students work alongside me, according to a plan we devise together for the best learning experience possible,” says Rome. For many of Rome’s foreign students, this rotation is the first opportunity they have to experience a pharmacy setting.

Rome enjoys her time with foreign students for cultural reasons as well. She says, “I love training students from throughout the world, and those born abroad are encouraged to share their cultures with my staff and me. We get very excited when we discuss music, food, customs, languages, and did I say food?” She hopes that after their time with her, students will learn how rewarding a profession in retail pharmacy can be and how enjoyable it is to have the opportunity to help people every day.

Prevent ‘Near-Misses’ and Errors 3.6 Errors / Week Avoided

Evaluation of the Percutaneous Absorption of Ketamine HCl + Gabapentin + Clonidine HCl + Baclofen, In SaltStable LS Advanced™, Into Human Skin, In Vitro, Using the Franz Skin Finite Dose Model Using Humco’s SaltStable LS Advanced™ the study was designed to evaluate the percutaneous absorption pharmacokinetics of ketamine HCl, gabapentin, clonidine HCl and baclofen. Absorption was measured in human epidermal cultures, in vitro, using the finite dose technique and Franz Diffusion Cells. The four drugs were selected due to their frequent use in compounding topical pain formulations along with compounding multiple actives in one formulation.

The formula was tested on standardized sections with Salt Stable LS, transdermal compounding base, for the percutaneous absorption of ketamine HCl, gabapentin, clonidine HCl and baclofen over a 48-hour dose period. At pre-selected times after dose application, the dermal receptor solution was removed in its entirety, replaced with fresh receptor solution, and an aliquot saved for subsequent analysis. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analyzed the samples.

RESULTS Humco’s SaltStable LS Advanced™ is proven to deliver multiple drugs beyond the stratum corneum, simultaneously into and through the human skin after a single dose in the base. The absorption profiles indicate a rapid penetration to a peak flux for gabapentin occurring at approximately 4 hours after dose application, and for baclofen occurring at approximately 8 hours after dose application. The absorption profiles indicate a steady penetration to a peak flux for ketamine HCl occurring at approximately 12 hours after dose application, and for clonidine HCl occurring at approximately 32 hours after dose application.

PHARMACY UPDATE HIPAA has changed!

HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) may be one of the most impacting set of regulations to take place in the pharmacy industry. Now, with the

publication of the “FINAL” HIPAA Rules in January 2013, the changes once again profoundly affect pharmacies and other health care facilities.

The Facts

ü Pharmacies need to replace or revise their existing HIPAA Compliance Program by

September 23, 2013.

ü Enforcement of compliance was funded in the Affordable Care Act and will be handled by the Office of Civil Rights. ü Enforcement will be proactive with on-site audits and no longer just in response to complaints. ü OCR is hiring enforcement officers just for this purpose. ü OCR is authorized to assess penalties and/ or exclude facilities non-compliant from programs payable, directly or indirectly, by Federal health care dollars.
