PATRON READERS & WRITERS CLUB The 2019 edition of the Ombacian Magazine is a well packaged document intentioned for us to reflect upon our achievements as a College for the last 76 Years.

At 76 years the college has had tremendous achievements and a lot more is yet to be done.

Writing is an art of creativity and I am exceedingly grateful to all who have contributed towards the success of this very edition.

How The School Of Ombaci Has Arisen

On the return from internment we suffered due to the War of 1939-45 (World War II) as Italians (Italy and Britain fought on opposite sides during the War), the British colonial administration told some of us to go to Arua in the District of West Nile, instead of Gulu, where we had worked before.

In 1938, we had started a technical school in Arua (Ediofe) for carpenters, mechanics and masons. But because of our internment, this had been closed.

After return to this territory which was peaceful, we thought of reopening the schools, but they were without locals. Arua’s mission in Ediofe had built some large dormitories for the catechumens and lent us one to use as a workshop. Unfortunately, the building was so low that you could touch the roof with your hands, and with low windows, just to give air, but not light. We were not satisfied and therefore we thought of an environment suitable for our purpose.

The Comboni Missionary superior showed us a truly beautiful place: a plateau where we could build a school of arts and crafts without difficulty of space, or of moving families because there was nobody. The place was called Ombatci which means “the place of war”. But in order to get that land we needed the permission of the English Provincial Commissioner, who at the time was an anti-Catholic (The British colonial administration had designated the area around Arua town to be Protestant, Yumbe was designated to be a Moslem territory and Moyo for Catholics, according to Fr. Toni Lasalandra MCCJ).

After two official requests we realized that it was anti-religious jealousy and therefore nothing to do!

Meanwhile, I designed the plans for the workshops, the school and the meeting room. It should be noted that the projects had to be done according to the established rules concerning stability, ventilation, light, space specified by the government at that time for education institutions. Therefore, everything in planning was observed according to the prescribed

rules. The approval of the projects had to be examined by the various government departments, including hygiene and public works. Therefore each project had to be delivered in four copies (then blue) for delivery to the various interested parties.

Here too, there was the difficulty of finding the cards to make the blue copies and so I turned to my cousin who lived in Milan and was an expert in the field ..

With his instruction, I bought the necessary ink and so I succeeded to do the plans in the required way with great satisfaction.

After preparing the projects, I had to take them to Entebbe (administrative capital of Uganda) for approval. At the office of the White Fathers (then French and English), I was received by the person in charge, to whom I explained the reason for my visit and to whom I handed over the plans. He looked at them and threw them on the floor in a corner of his office saying: “You know we are at war and so these things are not accepted”. Worried, I returned to the White Fathers’ house. There, I found an English White Father to whom I explained the incident. He told me: “We’ll see tomorrow”. The next day we went back to the office and, after having spoken with the Procurator, the person in charge had me pick up the projects, which were still in the aforementioned corner, and we went to the medical department’s office. Here the English White Father spoke with the person in charge and left me there with him. The incharge told me that the projects should have been done by an engineer and that it would have been very difficult for him to approve them, because they certainly had not been made according to the rules.

That said, he began to examine the workshop project.

He immediately objected that the windowsill was too high. I replied that in the book of regulations it is said that the sill can be up to one and twenty feet from the floor. He checked the book and admitted it was right. He passed to other points, but finding no quirks and not knowing what to do, he told me: “You see, I do not have time to examine these plans at the moment; but try going to the public employment department and we’ll see”.

In the public works department was a director, Vistomi who knew me because, a year before, he had come to see the construction of the cathedral in Gulu and was enthusiastic about it. Vistomi, asked me many things and the reason for my visit. I presented the projects I had with me to be approved. He then called an English engineer to whom he delivered the projects and told them to examine them. Meanwhile, he held me back until the engineer came back and said they were all made according to the rules. Then he took them and put on each his signature and stamp with approval. Then he said goodbye to me.

I returned to the medical (hygiene) department inspector who asked, “How did it go?” I replied that all the projects had been approved. He was hurt.

Then he told me: “As I told you, I am very busy, but I will approve of the first project I have seen and the others I will examine later. So I returned to the White Fathers attorney’s office. There I met an Indian merchant from Arua who came home with his truck and offered me a ride.

The College History

S

t. Joseph’s College Ombaci is a boys boarding secondary school which was opened in 1943. The School was originally meant to train sons of war veterans who fought during the Second World War. St. Joseph’s College Ombaci started as a technical school. The plan and initial design of structures for the school was done by a Comboni brother, Bro. Antonio Biasin whose father was an engineer. This explains the similarity in plan and structures with St. Joseph’s College, Layibi since Bro. Biasin worked in Gulu as well. The Comboni brothers who started the school were expatriates in technical projects.

The Director of the school at the time was the former Superior General of the Comboni Missionaries, Fr. Peter Simoncelli. Fr. Simoncelli was later replaced by Fr. Luigi Ponzoni, who served for at least 10 years.

Fr. Luigi Ponzoni took the school to great standards. As such, the school had a syllabus that was superior to the syllabi of most schools in Uganda. During this period, the school did very well in national examinations. Owing to the school’s academic excellence that time, a British Inspector of Schools was send to the school to investigate the alleged exam malpractice but instead he found that the results were genuine. He was impressed by the school syllabus as a result the syllabus was adopted as a blueprint for the whole country!

Special thanks go to early missionaries who did a great deal to make the school what it is now. Thanks to Bro. Antonio Biasin, Fr. Luigi Ponzoni and Fr.Lino Zucco for the construction of staff houses. Among the early teachers were Bro. Elio, Bro. Bulagro, Bro. John Bonafini, and Bro. Fochasato John. Besides them were lay teachers such as Mr and Mrs Gouffini; and, Mr. John and wife Joe. In 1963, the government passed a drastic Education Act. Under the Act, the government took over administration of all mission schools in Uganda. Two years later, the school was changed to a secondary school under Fr. Luigi Ponzoni who recruited its pioneer

O’level students. By this time there were very few secondary schools in Uganda.

The Local community was very happy of this development whereas the Comboni Missionaries were not pleased because Ombaci missed the chance of becoming a renown technical college like Kyambogo (now a University). As a result some of the Comboni brothers withdrew from the school. In 1975, the DEO Alfred Ocen called a meeting during which he offered to revert the school to its technical status but it was too late partly because the Comboni brothers had left the school and also because the machines were outdated.

In 1965, Fr. Luigi Ponzoni fell sick. He was taken to Italy where he died two years later and was replaced by Fr. Lino Marco Mich in May 1965 as Headmaster. Fr. Lino Mich served for 18 years and died in a motor accident in Nairobi. Just a year before his death, the Advanced Level section was started in 1982.

In 1983, after Fr. Lino Mich, Mr. Abiriga Hercules was appointed as Headmaster to run the school. He served up to 1994. From 1994, Mr. Andresile Adrian took over as caretaker Head teacher before handing over to Mr. Andrionzi John in 1995. Mr. Andrionzi John served up to 1998 before succumbing to an abrupt death.

In 1998, Mr. Juruga Augustine took over the reins and served up to 2010 and retired.

Following Mr. Juruga’s retirement, Mr. Akuma Atiku Sanctus was appointed by the Board of Governors as Caretaker Head teacher and served up to 2012.

After his transfer, Mr. Tumwesige Andrew was appointed as Caretaker Head teacher in 2012 and thereafter appointed as the full Headteacher of the school and served up to 2017.

At the beginning of the 2018 he was transfered.

Following his transfer, Mr. Ondoga Charles was appointed by the Board of Governors as a care taker Headteacher and is serving the school upto date.

MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION SECRETARY ARUA DIOCESE. THE SHINING STARS IN THE DARKEST NIGHTS.

Things evolve as time passes and this is true for every living organism. It does not occur by chance, but nature has its course. As psychologist Emile Coue affirmed” Every day in every way I am getting better and better” We should not be immobilized by the memories of mistakes, in countless yesterdays yet we cannot relive the past. There is always something new, which gets on our ways of life. To have good will, success insurance, to be important, to be admired and to be appreciated in the society. Many times we develop hatred, animosity, Envy, Jealousy, Divisions which are not elements of success. Its is a bare fact that “The more the diamond is cut the more it sparkles”. The change we need is not only in attitude but the actions, which should be positive.

The great achievers make mistakes but do not quit the struggle. Let our schools be homes for spiritual development, Discipline, values and academic excellence.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS IN THE WEST NILE REGION – A BATTLE FIELD OR NIGHTMARE!!!

Here are some of the key scientifically proven benefits of sports activities: 1.

Particularly for the young, sports helps them build a strong internal body system as well as develop a fit and sound body physically.

2.

Day to day practice in sports can help students and the young absorb leadership skills.

3.

Qualities such as tolerance, patience and tips to handle pressure is well taught by sports.

4.

Sports helps in maintaining the physical wellbeing of the individual sports personality.

5.

Sports builds the control in the temperament of the sports personality because it has sets of rules that instills discipline.

This I recon is not out of the whims of the education sector to keep the learners busy for no particular reason but because of the benefits that are enshrined therein as proven by science. It goes without say to know that academic learning and sports education complement each other and resemble the two sides of the same coin. If sports education is carried out accompanied with the academic curriculum, the overall personality of the student is increased to quite an extent and you build an all-round personality. Qualities of leadership, sharing, team spirit, and tolerance are learnt from and are well enshrined in sports discipline with its set of rules. As the English saying goes, “All work and no Play makes Jack a Dull Boy;” school academic and co-curricular activities complement each other and are geared towards building an all-round personality.

In reality, the essence of sports as proven by scientific research has a myriad of beneficial results for the sports personality, the team, the spectators and the community at large.

Sports helps to develop skills of the individual sportsmen in the spirit of practice makes perfect.

Sports is a source of entertainment, giving time for relaxation from the day to day activities that may be stressful.

Sports has become a source of income generation and employment for many in the world; indeed it has become one of the most industrious engagements in the world with so much invested into it.

Sports education not only teaches the students to maintain the physical stamina, but also the habit of obedience, discipline, the determination to win, willpower, etc.

In as much as the above are some of the benefits of sporting activities, it is frustrating and disheartening to note that sports events among Secondary Schools in the West Nile region and may be the greater North has become a nightmare or rather a battlefield than what it is meant to be. It beats logic that this very important part of the education system is so much abused in our region beyond compare. Is the region not shocked enough by the fact that we are at the tail of the academic sphere in this country,

making us even dare to show our ignorance by exhibiting it in public that since we are weak in class, we shall demonstrate through sports as well for the whole world to know! I love the saying ‘Soccer is Soccer’ meaning in one way or the other, there must be a winner and no team can be the winner always. Could we borrow a leaf from that saying and instead work to build talents rather than breed hatred, malice, personal grudge etc.

Why on earth should such a valuable cocurricular activity bring so much destruction, hatred, conflict, etc. even to unsuspecting persons trying to make ends meet as they carry on with their daily chores. For God’s sake, the persons assaulted, looted of their property, pelted with stones as they move on the road or drive, the security personnel etc. are out own parents, brothers, sisters and relatives. What joy does it give you to hurt or even threaten the life of an innocent person in the cause of sports that is meant to bring individuals and communities together as family? Just consider that you participated in such an act and at the end of it all you hear that a friend, relative or a parent was killed in such a process, how would it make you feel? Would you feel proud that you were an active player in such an activity that resulted into the demise of your loved one?

As stakeholders in the education sector, which is so dear and at the heart of any form of development, we must all feel ashamed of this status quo in the West Nile region. I may be wrong and may most probably not have done enough research BUT I am tempted to believe that the Secondary School sports activities in the West Nile region seem to be marred with so

much violence that it leaves a lot to be desired.

I do not have the solution to this high level of indiscipline but I think there is a need for us all to introspect and sooner than later put our ideas together in order to stop this menace.

Many questions run to mind when one reflects on this reality: 1. Is it partly due to the unhealed conflict situations that has impacted on the lives of people in our region? Surely even when the school children are relatively calm, the spectators seem to stir up conflict.

2. Is it that the organizers of the sports activities have failed in their duties that they cannot handle the responsibility entrusted unto them?

3. Are the children of this age way beyond us that all the other stakeholders are held hostage by them including the security system?

4. Why is this menace so prevalent at the secondary school level than at the other levels of the education system in West Nile?

These and many more questions must continue to occupy the minds of any stakeholder as we reflect on this reality. Key to note here however, is the fact that there is something clearly not in order which need a concerted effort of all the stakeholders. This must however begin with you and me, and we cannot afford to start by pointing fingers at each other but we need to go to the root cause of this problem. In as much as we do soul searching, we urge the students who are at the heart of this challenge to refrain from these acts of violence, as together we seek for a lasting solution.

PARENT– TEACHER RELATIONSHIP

Rev. Fr. Dr Pius Yobuta Let us Develop Parent – Teacher Relationship Having a good working relationship between teachers and parents is important and contributes for a student’s academic success.

Parents should expect teachers to teach their students and guide their learning so that they can have success. On the other hand teachers expect parents to support their teaching and student’s learning in school. Both sides have expectations for success for their student’s academic performance, attendance, and good behavior both in school and outside the school.

If these expectations are communicated they will have strong effect on the student’s learning outcomes. When expectations are clearly communicated, both parents and teachers will have a better understanding of their roles in the parent-teacher relationship. They will then know how best to be a supportive part of that relationship.

Both parents and teachers have an important role to play. Their roles compliment and reinforce in providing the student with a consistent message about reading and learning. Thinking of parents and teachers as partners refers to this mutual effort toward a shared goal. It also implies shared responsibility of parents and teachers for supporting students as learners for success. Are we parents/guardians and teachers communicating and working as partners in the education of our students?

In the process of your son’s education, you get with teachers involved as parents to attend students’ performances, school and class activities, parent-teacher conferences, and Parents Teachers Association meetings.

When a student comes to school and is wellbehaved it would mean that the parents are involved in the process of the student to be successful and prepared for school.

Parents and teachers need to be supportive of each other, have a mutual respect for one another, and have one common focus and goal for success of each student. All parents have genuine desire for their children to be successful at whatever they’re doing. Teachers have that same desire. Seeking to understand one another by communicating expectations is key in having a powerful relationship. When both a student and a parent feel supported by the teacher and vice versa, students will have a greater advantage in their ability to be successful.

Working as partners is a way of thinking about how to create constructive connections between parents and teachers for developing ongoing relationship between teachers and parents to enhance the student’s reading, learning, and to address the obstacles that impede it.

Parents, let your sons and your son’s teacher know your expectations. Likewise teachers should let students and their parents know your expectations. Communicate those expectations to each other often and in respectful ways.

Remember, the common concerns, desires, and outcomes both parties share are the same.

Success for all students is the goal, and positive parent-teacher relationships are the key to that success.

Try to build a positive relationship with your child’s teacher. Approach the teacher with respect.

Create a problem-solving partnership, instead of confronting a teacher immediately with what’s wrong. Meet with a teacher to brainstorm and find ways to help your son.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER Dear reader, I once again welcome you to read the full text of this yet another edition of the Ombacian Magazine. This magazine contains official reports and communication from the Staff of the College, articles by staff, students and other stakeholders. You will also find entertaining articles and please don’t miss it.

This magazine is a result of hard work by the Editorial team, contributors and the sponsors. We are grateful to all those who contributed to the production of this magazine. It will add another layer of the history of the College.

We want to report success stories over the past year due to God’s blessings and hard work. Among the achievements are improved performance in National examinations in which we were rated 102nd nationally in UCE and 522nd for UACE. We are sending to the universities over 30 students. We successfully celebrated our platinum Jubilee with renovation works, master plan launch and stakeholder mobilisation.

Despite challenges faced by the College we continue to make progress. This year our activities are guided by the theme: Projecting the future with confidence through team work. The future looks bright amidst the challenges which can be overcome if we become organised. Therefore the College has gone to do strategic planning which should guide our actions for the next five years.

We pledge to work hard and pray for abundant God’s blessings so that we make one step at a time until we reach the ultimate.

The college profile BACKGROUND Catholic Founded, Government Funded, ‘O’ And ‘A’ Level Boys Secondary School.

It was started by the Comboni Missionaries in 1943 as a Technical School for the Second World War veterans.

In 1960 it was turned to offer ‘O’ level Secondary Education. In 1984 it started offering A-level Education.

The Parent Teachers Association, The Foundation Body and Old Boys Association provide important advisory roles to the College administration. The administration of the college is mainly guided by the 1995 constitution, education (preprimary, primary and post-primary) Act 2008, regulations and other laws and regulations issued from time to time The College administration is headed by the Headmaster and deputized by two deputy headmasters for administration and academics, below the deputy head teachers are the two Deans, Dean of Studies, Dean of Guidance and Counselling. Then there are two Assistant Deans. The Deans supervise staff below.

The administration performs the dayto-day running of the College with the assistance of both the teaching and nonteaching staff.

The student’s leadership is headed by the Mayor who has elected executives for the different portfolios.

The student’s council consist of a Chairman and Executive CURRICULUM a) The O-level curriculum consists of: Core: English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, and Physical Education.

Electives: CRE, Agriculture, Accounts*, Technical drawing, Literature, Commerce*, Entrepreneurship, Computer studies, Building practice, Art and Design and French. * These are being phased out. b) The A-level curriculum consists of: combination: The following Principal subjects offered in three subject combinations: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Technical Drawing, Mathematics, CRE, Geography, Economics, Entrepreneurship, History, Literature in English.

ACADEMICS Our lessons run from Monday to Friday. Extra lessons can be conducted during prep times. All our lessons are compulsory By regulations syllabus in candidate classes must be completed by term one to pave way for seminars in term 2.

BUILDING POSITIVE STUDENTTEACHER RELASTIONSHIPS.

Successful teachers are those that have the ability to maximize the learning potential of all students in their class. Developing a positive student-teacher relationship is a fundamental aspect of quality teaching and student learning.

Positive student-teacher relationships promote a sense of school belonging and encourages student to participate co-operatively. Students develop confidence to experiment and succeed in an environment where they are not restricted by the fear of failure. Teachers are able to assist students with motivation and goal setting and students can turn to them for advice and guidance.

Research on student-teacher relationships point to how a positive relationship can have good social and academic outcomes. In 2015 a researcher identified a number of influences related to effective learning and achievement.

Some of these influences included teaching strategies, classroom discussions, classroom cohesion, teacher expectation, teacher immediacy, teacher credibility and classroom behavior.

Establishing a positive and supportive classroom environment, combined with productive relationship between students and teachers will provide a platform in which students are encouraged and motivated to grow both creativity levels amongst students. The impact of student-teacher relationships upon students mental health should not be ignored. It is through that the risk of young people struggling with mental illness can be diminished with the help of a support framework. Teachers are in a position to act as a powerful and effective means of support and encouragement when this may not be always available in the home environment.

In another study done in 2002 it was recognized that the inherent qualities of student-teacher relationship (caring, knowing, trust and mutual respect) and a teacher’s rapport with students were affirmed and supported to achieve their best. An earlier study done in 2001 showed that classroom can become supportive spaces where students can engage in academic and socially productive ways. The study also revealed that students who had positive relationship with their teacher were more willing to take on academic challenges and work on their social-emotional development.

There are many different ways teachers can employ to build positive relationships with their students. Some suggestions are given below and it may be good to reflect on these and think of some more.

1. Teachers should provide or creates a structured space. The majority of students respond positively to a structured environment. Teachers should explain clear expectations to their students. Rules and regulations must be sensible and constantly enforced. In these situations a students’ trust in their teacher will increase and they will understand that their teacher has their best interest at heart.

2. They teach with enthusiasm and passion.

3. They display a positive attitude.

4. They make learning fun. The creation of an enjoyable learning environment encourages students’ attendance and participation.

5. They show an interest in the students’ life outside the classroom. Teachers should take a genuine interest in the well being of their students.

6. They treat students with respect. A teacher who does will experience reciprocal respect from the students.

7. They create a secure and safe environment for students. Teachers need to set expectations where students do not criticize, bully or intimidate each other.

Developing a positive student-teacher relationship takes significant time and effort however the benefits on both students and teachers are immeasurable. Academic excellence is important, however we must aim to achieve much more to empower our students to change the world.

Education is not just a process of giving knowledge for a future job but a lifelong process which creates an understanding of moral and ethical values to guide one’s life in a right path. As a parent, you want the best for your child and we are proud to be working with you to ensure that they are given the right knowledge to face the future challenges. Parents, students and the school authorities are a team and we have to complement each other effort Secondary school is an important and challenging time of transition in a child’s life as it is at this level that most of them begin to experience adolescence life and its associated problems. In a term, students stay with parents for not more than three weeks but most parents get relieved when it’s time for students to report back to school. Likewise when students go for holidays, we also get a relieve from stressful period of twelve to thirteen weeks when they are at school.

This therefore calls for a concerted effort and cooperation between parents and the school administration in order to nurture them

into responsible citizens. Our programme recognises the different needs of students at this stage.

At St. Josephs College Ombaci we focus on complete development of our students by involving them in both academic and co-curricular activities. I am sure this helps our children to realise, understand and explore their talents. In order to do this, the parents and the school authorities must work together to inculcate our core values in the students and these are God fearing, Team work, Transparency and accountability, Innovativeness, Professionalism, Hard work and Self reliance.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEADTEACHER- ACADEMICS even more complex. To see them clearly and see them whole, and respond to them wisely in the moment, requires a fusion of Freud and Solomon (Robert and Sake 1982) that few of us achieve. If students and subjects accounted for all the complexities of teaching, our standard ways of coping would do, keep up with our fields as best we can, and learn enough techniques to stay ahead of the student psyche.

But there is another reason for these complexities: we teach who we are.

Teaching, like any truly human activity, emerges from one’s inwardness, for better or worse. As I teach, I project the condition of my soul onto my students, my subject, and our way of being together.

The entanglements I experience in the classroom are often no more or less than the convolutions of my inner life. Viewed from this angle, teaching holds a mirror to the soul. If I am willing to look in that mirror, and not run from what I see, I have a chance to gain self-knowledge and knowing me is as crucial to good teaching as knowing my students and my subject.

We teach who we are I am a teacher at heart, and there are moments in the classroom when I can hardly hold the joy.

When my students and I discover uncharted territory to explore, when the pathway out of a thicket opens up before us, when our experience is illumined by the lightning life of the mind and Understanding then teaching is the finest work I know.

But at other moments, the classroom is so lifeless or painful or confused and I become so powerless to do anything about it that makes my claim to be a teacher seem a transparent sham. Then I feel the enemy is everywhere in those students from some alien planet, in that subject I thought I knew, and in the personal pathology that keeps me earning my living this way.

No matter how we devote ourselves to reading and research, teaching requires a command of content that always eludes our grasp. Second, the students we teach are larger than life and

In fact, knowing my students and my subject depends heavily on selfknowledge. When I do not know myself, I cannot know who my students are. I will see them through a glass darkly, in the shadows of my unexamined life and when I cannot see them clearly I cannot teach them well. When I do not know myself, I cannot know my subject not at the deepest levels of embodied, personal meaning, we teach who we are.

When Teachers Lose Heart As good teachers weave the fabric that joins them with students and subjects, the heart is the loom on which the threads are tied, the tension is held, the shuttle flies, and the fabric is stretched tight. Small wonder, then, that teaching tugs at the heart, opens the heart, even breaks the heart and the more one loves teaching, the more heartbreaking it can be. We became teachers for reasons of the heart, animated by a passion for some subject and for helping people to learn.

But many of us lose heart as the years of teaching go by. How can we take heart in teaching once more, so we can do what good teachers always do, give heart to our students?

The courage to teach is the courage to keep one’s heart open in those very moments when the heart is asked to hold more than it is able, so that teacher and students and subject can be woven into the fabric of community that learning and living requires.

There are no techniques for reclaiming our hearts, for keeping our hearts open. Indeed, the heart does not seek “fixes” but insight and understanding.

When we lose heart, we need an understanding of our condition that will liberate us from that condition, a diagnosis that will lead us toward new ways of being in the classroom simply by telling the truth about who, and how, we are. Truth, not technique, is what heals and empowers the heart. We lose heart, in part, because teaching is a daily exercise in vulnerability.

I need not reveal personal secrets to feel naked in front of a class. I need only pause a question or work a proof on the board while my students doze off or pass notes. No matter how technical or abstract my subject may be, the things I teach are things I care about and what I care about helps define my selfhood. Unlike many professions, teaching is always done at the dangerous intersection of personal and public life.

A good therapist must work in a personal way, but never publicly: the therapist who reveals as much as a client’s name is derelict. A good trial lawyer must work in a public forum, but unswayed by personal opinion: the lawyer who allows his or her feelings about a client’s guilt to weaken the client’s defense is guilty of malpractice.

But a good teacher must stand where personal and public meet, dealing with the thundering flow of traffic at an intersection where he or she feels more like crossing a freeway on foot. As we try to connect ourselves and our subjects with our students, we make ourselves, as well as our subjects, vulnerable to indifference, judgment, ridicule.

FLYING THE ACADEMIC FLAG. “St Joscom” is a school blessed with qualified teachers that well trained and a good administration. These teachers have succeeded in keeping the academic glory of the college in Arua, West Nile and Uganda at large through producing several academic giants especially in UACE and UCE examinations.

The summary below proves it all to those who still doubt that St. Joscom is an academic hero.

In 2011, 129 candidates were registered for UCE and 54 passed in div 1, 61 div 2, 14 div 3. The best obtained aggregates 10.

In 2012, 145 candidates were registered, 33 Div 1, 68 div 2.

In 2013, 136 were registered, 36 Div 1, 71 div 2.

In 2014, 148 were registered, 43 in Div 1, 64 in Div 2, and the best was 10 agg.

In 2015, ,115 were registered, 29 in Div 1, 58 Div 3, and the best was 11 agg.

In 2016, 86 sat for UCE, 26 div 1, 60 Div 2.

In 2017, 96 were registered, 38 in Div 1, 55 Div 2and the rest Div 3.

The latest results indicated that out of 86 registered, 37 Div 1, 37 Div 2, and the best got 14 agg.

Expect yet the best come the year 2019.

On the other hand, the UACE results indicated that over 50% of the candidates were able to attain university cut off points. In 2017, 72 were registered out of which 29 got 3pp and 23 got 2pp. In 2018 results, the best got 16 points, 15 points in 2017, the best got 17 points, 15 points in 2016 17 points.

The good performance in the College in not by accident, students are well facilitated to study.

• Guidance refers to the help given by one person to another in making choices or decisions in addressing a challenge where as counselling is the face to face interaction between the counsellor and the counselee(client) for the purpose of enhancing the client his or her problems.

Therefore, there is need for a wide program of guidance and counselling services in the school.

The students need our support to help them think about their future occupations and guide them to select or opt for occupations in which they would fit best.

Among others, below are some of our activities that we undertake in the department; •

Planning for provision of guidance and counselling services to the students. This we do by generating termly work plan for the department Coordinating with professionals in the various fields such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, accountants and they like to come and talk to the students on schedule so as to stimulate their interests in these professions for the future occupations.

Preparing for and organizing careers week to provide effective guidance and counselling services to the students. During these talks, the students are encouraged to build confidence in themselves and what they want, they should plant themselves on a rock of excellence, have strong attributes, look for the biggest opportunity and aim to be described as educated people in society.

Orientation of new entrants to school with the focus on the school and its expectation, studying with ambition, making of appropriate choices of subjects offered in the school for

Allocation of students to members of the teaching staff to form academic families where each teacher has fifteen students under his/her supervision. This strategy helps us to closely monitor the child’s academic progress, discipline, health, spiritual growth, hygiene, moral aspect and other aspects of human growth. The teacher also liaises with the child’s biological parent/guardian to join hands in his upbringing.

Organizing moral education lessons in classes with emphasis on life skills such as personal hygiene, dressing code, way of communication, behavior, eating habits, caring for the environment, family manners general socializing and others Liaising with health professionals in the district to provide health education and voluntary testing of HIV/AIDS and counselling services to our students.

Coordinating with the ministry of education and sports on the policies and policy guidelines on guidance and counselling and disseminating the information to the students Guide the students in A-Level at the time of filling the JAB and PUJAB forms to make strategic choices of courses in order to maximize opportunities for sponsorship and in the job market.

It is also in our interest to encourage the students to plan their time well, they should decide what they want, befriend people who help them, select activities which are useful to them co-curricular activities, club activities for instance YCS, SU, HIV/AIDS, straight talk, Tax club, Savings Club, watch and listen to useful TV and radio programmes etc.

In conclusion, guidance and counselling is a very important service for students in schools and colleges. It is a strategy that we can use to promote good attitude and disciplined behavior in schools and to prevent or minimize crimes in schools and colleges and promote good neighborliness with other schools.

It is a good approach to rehabilitate or remedy existing bad habits or practices and institute programmes of developments in our schools and colleges.

As a Custodian of Resources/ Finances, with joy I greet you in the name of our Lord, Shalom! Allow me thank and appreciate you for your whole heartedly support to our wonderful family of St. Joseph’s College Ombaci for productive existence.

Budget and Financial Statements (Finances) The students enrolment in the College for the last five years ranges between 700 to 850 students with an affordable termly fees of Shs.547,000= only for the year 2019 and with the break-even 2019 Budget of Shs.2,282,545,336= only.

The above School Budget caters for also 107 staff comprising; 55 teaching staff, 17 non-teaching staff and 35 group employees.

St. Joseph’s College Ombaci collects fees only through the Bank Account No: 2010040723, in Centenary bank, Arua branch. The mandate of the account is: the Principle Signatory (Headteacher) signs only with anyone of the two signatories; that is either the Chairperson Board of Governors or Chairperson PTA. The Financial statements are prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Public Finance Management Act, 2015 (the Act) and comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) taking into consideration the Government of Uganda Legal and Regulatory Framework regarding Public Finances. The measurement basis consistently applied for presenting the financial statements is the historical

Greetings from the prefectural body St joseph’s college ombaci and I congratulate the board of governors, PTA members, administration, the staff and the gallant students body upon reaching 76 years since the college was established in 1943 I feel anointed to reach you as a student’s administrator at this moment to open the doors of this college as we embrace academics, discipline, sports etc. Things that add value to our future and dreams because this dreams make us awake.

Most importantly leadership as many leaders are modeled with skills, tactics in problem solving and public service as evidenced by the great leaders who have passed through this great college since leaders in ombaci don’t have to be great to start but start to be great Conclusively we are destined to be great because we decide to be great and as our theme for this year states, “Projecting the future with confidence through team work.” We always live by it and practice it to unite all the students to live as a harmonious family that lives the college vision, mission and core values because if we change nothing then nothing will change. THE SECRETS BEHIND OMBACIANS’ SUCCESS It’s my pleasure and honor to alert the public about the continuous success in The Great College. Just as the name sounds, it is not a tragedy that Ombacians excel or an automatic aspect but primarily due to the daily prayers in all denominations in The Great College justifying the saying, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”.

Secondly, experience of the college in performance that is, it once favorably competed nationally that is why up to date people know and remember the college for such a great record. Besides, the college has got many successful old boys who induce the students to emulate and imitate such greatness.

On the other hand, the students and the teachers work hard to make sure that they accomplish their obligations, others even go past the schedules.

However, there are some “jiffies” of catastrophes, for example rampant outings from the college but still perform to their best.

My appeal to my fellow students is that, we should be mindful of whatever we do while at school. Let first things be first as our motto states, “PRIMUS INTER PARES”.

I know academics is harder than watching TV, reading newspapers, surfing the internet and “coupling” but have you ever carried out a research that shows that students of teen bods are twice as likely not to graduate in high schools than student’s bods were over the age of 25.

Have You quite tried to be a perfectionist?

Being PRIMUS INTER PARES comes in these ways, • Do the expected: if you are a perfectionist about your experience, go to town in your worst clothes and see how it feels.

• Put things in perspective: read about a story of Donald Trump’s work plan or watch the news clip about the parliamentary massacre. You can also watch Hotel Rwanda so that you get some perspective. Your imperfect life is good.

• Be rational: play out what would happen if you weren’t perfect all the time. Ask yourself; would it really be the end of the world?

THE SUCCESSFUL OLD BOYS OF OMBACI

How has the room that used to be our main “jar base” in both ‘O’ and ‘A’ level become the new staff room? This was where we really fought with Bukenya for our future in ‘O’ level and proved ourselves valiant to him but later things became complicated in ‘A’ level.

I really desired to do PCM in ‘A’ level since my child hood so that I could be an engineer in future. But only in one week’s time after joining ‘A’ level with my desired PCM combination things seemed not to be working out well in math’s because I had forgotten my vectors and matrices of ‘O’ level and decided to replace it with biology because I still remembered my DNA replications and the reproduction process.

I later then put in my mind that, my next career was to be a doctor. But also from nowhere, all the three subjects, physics, chemistry, and biology were proving tougher as I could not understand them at all. I had actually forgotten my genetics crosses in biology. I then sat down for one full week to think about what to do for my future. I finally decided to try a HEL combination as I thought was my destination in everything after the long struggle.

Thinking that I had dodged calculations successfully in math, I also discovered tougher ones in economics even to an extent where one was to calculate the quantities of goods sold in the market when even it wasn’t there. That made me developed an idea of doing HLD combination as I considered divinity to be for everyone because I went to church frequently, knew some bible verses and had somehow a good command of English language After all those struggles and consolations, I found myself getting some fairly good number of points at the end of the year in my HLD combination.

My dear Ombacians in the struggle, things are hard. Let us read our eyes red, sit our buttocks flat and write our pens dry then see what to do next in UNEB to face any form of storm, be it PCM, PCB, HEL, HLD Compiled by; Osuta James Hébert. S.4B

THE WRIGHT PROTHERS For hundreds of years, People dreamt of flying through the air like birds, many tried but died.

But on December 17,1903, Orville and Wilbur wright’s flying machine lifted from the ground in 12 seconds. Orville flew about the width of a football field. Using an engine, the 600-pound (270-kilogram) air craft could take off and land.

Orville and Wilbur had made dreams come true! They had proved that humans could fly!

In AD 875 a Muslim doctor in Spain tried to fly, he attached artificial feathers to his body and glided for a little while, but then crushed!

And in 1678 a French man by the names of Jacob Besnier tried also to fly like the pigeons.

He strapped wings to his arms and jumped from a high window. He fell straight down. The wings only helped him land safely! In 1895, Wilbur wrote to a museum, the smith Sonian Institution asking for a flying information. He wanted to read everything he would find out about flying.

Wilbur concluded that a flying machine needed three things 1. Curved wings 2. A form of power 3. A way to balance and control it Then it was time to build a source of power!

The brothers searched for a light engine. They could not find one anywhere, so they decided to build one themselves. They started to make a machine and the new machine was ready shortly, Orville and Wilbur asked the men from beach patrol to help them, they set up the starting track. The track was laid to guide the air craft during takeoff and Wilbur won a coin toss to fly the craft. But it never left the ground because a small part got damaged. Next, it was Orville’s turn to fly and he felt excited to fly again. The brother ignored the cold and windy weather of December 17-1903 and flew successfully!

NEXT TIME YOU SEE LEMONS, REMEMBER!

An elderly man was on his last breath. He was barely able to speak but just mumbling “lemons, lemons” All the family members around him didn’t know what he was meaning.

“Is this old asking for lemons? But what can he do with lemons at this stage?” A family member wondered.

As graders were levelling the land sold, they found various treasure box under the lemon trees with diamonds, silver and gold inside.

One of the nearby neighbors took note of it and informed the family of the deceased.

It takes following certain steps to become a good leader The first is to identify what the content of leadership is and the qualities you need to possess. What makes one a good leader in one company may not apply in another.

For example, I remember reading some French passage before the exams. I tried the question and marked myself. Guess what?

The exact passage and question appeared in the exams. Needless to mention, I passed French with a distinction!

Dhinakaran from India has the most interesting which is very encouraging. He was doing so badly in math and generally in life that he decided to commit suicide. It was God who rescued him and he rose to become one of the greatest men in India and across the globe. So can you and I!

BETRAYAL OF JESUS

One evening, Jesus took a walk with his disciples around Galilee and he asked each one to a pick stone, Judas picked a big stone thinking that Jesus would turn it into bread but the rest of the 11 disciples picked small stones and Jesus turned them into loads and Judas had the heaviest load compared to the 11 disciples which really angered him.

On the second day in Nazareth, Jesus asked them to pick stones again. This time the 11 disciples picked big ones but Judas pick a small one thinking that it would be turned into a heavy load like the first one, instead Jesus turned them in to bread and Judas had the smallest bread compared to the ones of the other disciples.

On the third day in Judea, Jesus asked them again to pick stones. This time two stones each, the 11 disciples picked stones of same size but Judas thinking that they would be turned into load and bread, picked a big one and a small one. Jesus turned them into shoes and so he had a big shoe and a small one yet the other 11 disciples had shoes of the same sizes. He could not take these any more so he had to sell him to the Romans

All the poor and rich men wanted to find their way out but so as to save themselves but failed.

Thereafter, the exit fee was hiked to 200,000 shillings everybody paid it in five minutes to save their lives.
