fulfilling human activities which should be nourished throughout the ages of human existence and civilization. It is with this in mind that National Teachers College Muni magazine ‘The Light’ is being promoted to keep this torch shining. This magazine promotes interaction and sharing of ideas for intellectual, social, economic and political progress of the society not only in the college but beyond. It further enlightens the society outside the college especially the students in secondary schools and teachers, of opportunities that are available for career development in the rapidly changing institution, which has become

one of the best in Uganda.

NTC Muni was fortunately selected by the Belgian Technical Corperation (BTC) for support which has been both pedagogical and material. Apart from renovating and constructing buildings on the campus, BTC has suppoted clubs like the Writers’ Club which spearheaded the publishing of ‘The Light’ magazine. This is yet the second edition and we hope for a continuity in the activity. I wish you a pleasurable reading.

The Chairperson Writers Club NTC Muni, Atandu Sunday

PRINCIPAL’S WORD cept many times to emphasize its value in creation and the conduct of humanity. Have you ever noted that in the creation account the Bible states that light and darkness existed before the creation of the sun and moon which scientifically are some of the major sources of light? (Gen.1: 3-4, 14-18) What does this account mean then? In his great mission to save humanity from sin, the vice, Jesus is referred to as the light (Jn1: 4-5). He too described His followers as being “like the light for the whole world” (Mt. 5:14-16).

I

am indubitably delighted by the publication of the second edition of the College Magazine, “The Light”. As a new member in the college, I am particularly impressed by the title of the magazine. What a beautiful title! What a meaningful name! I have no doubts that this title was chosen as a result of one of the many good practices of Active Teaching and Learning (ATL); namely, reflective practice. Indeed, National Teachers’ College (NTC) Muni, being located at the top of Muni Hill in Oluko Sub-county, Arua District, is like a lamp put on a stand to give light. No wonder NTC Muni is a college whose core mandate is to train professional teachers competent enough to enlighten learners under their care by disseminating knowledge, skills and values cherished by our nation, Uganda. Hence, on behalf of the NTC Muni Governing Council, staff, students and the community at large, I cannot hide our gratitude and appreciation to those who chose the title of this college magazine, “The Light”. In the same vein, it would be unfair if l fail to appreciate and congratulate all those persons who have subscribed articles and time to the accomplishment of the magazine. And above all, I extend many thanks to BTC for the immense financial support for not only this magazine but also for the rehabilitation and extension of the college, all focused on training the teacher to be the light. We appreciate in advance more support which is in process for phase two. Greeks and Jews valued light. The picturesque of the allegory of the cave by Plato gave a description of two states of true knowledge acquisition: movement from darkness to light. Socrates, who tutored Plato, held a view that knowledge is virtue and ignorance is vice which in effect implied light and darkness respectively. The Holy Bible uses the “light” con-

The above renowned great people and others in this world, not mentioned here, underscored the value of light. Its common knowledge that light facilitates growth and development of plants animals; it checks wrong doing that would be done at night and dispels fear; it enables one to see direction and be directed. Hence, light is undoubtedly a paradoxical cause and effect of education of which the teacher is part and parcel, and therefore his/ her role is indispensable. Teachers are agents of education, the light; hence the call for them to be role models in society. By the way when I took the word TEACHER and reflected on it, I found it carrying attributes befitting a true agent of education. And so I hereby disclose my reflection here-in below, that a professional teacher is in effect a person who is, 1. Technically Trained 2. Educated 3. Accountable 4. Consultant and Counselor 5. Humble 6. Evaluator 7. Realistic Would you say that a person having the above qualities is not enlightened to be an agent of education? Certainly No! I am confident that any reader of this magazine, produced by teachers and student teachers who are conscious of their roles, will find it informative and enriching. I wish you fruitful reading of The Light, as NTC Muni takes pleasure in her motto: Hard Work for Excellence.

CHRISTOPHER YIKII AGATRE – BTC NATIONAL INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERT/FIELD COORDINATOR, NTC MUNI cy-based assessment (coaching, mentoring and supervision)

The implementation period of Teacher Training Education (TTE1) project ended on March 23, 2017 with the Specific Agreement ending on December 05, 2017. From 1 project under TTE1 costing 17,5 million Euro (almost finished) to 3 projects: NTC Muni project: 7,5 million Euro; NTC Kaliro project: 7,5 million Euro; NTCs Mubende Kabale project: 8 million Euro. The Project period is for nearly 4 years. The three results under TTE2 are: (a) Institutional Development to strenghten the management capacity of the colleges (b) Infrastructure and equipment (c) Improved quality of teaching and learning (pedagogy). During the special partners’ committee between Belgium and Uganda recently, both countries agreed that an amount of budget support in Education sector shall be reoriented. The main goal of TTE2 project is to provide an improved teaching and learning environment in five teachers’ training colleges including NTC Muni. Under this project a number of achievements will be realised. The title of the new project is: Improving the training of Secondary Teacher Trainers of the National Teachers’ College Muni (STT Muni). However, despite tangible results under TTE1, the national teachers’ colleges still have huge challenges remaining regarding infrastructure, management and pedagogical skills. Under TTE2, ATL will continuously be rolled out to the 5 TTE partner colleges (including NTC Muni) in a number of stages. The ATL training package consists of 4 units: (i) Attending to inquiry through ATL (ii) ATL Methods & Techniques (iii) Teaching & learning resources for ATL and Guidelines for Action Research (iv) Competen-

Besides development and validation of the pedagogical approach, support materials will be developed, master teachers will be trained and will be provided with pedagogic support so that approaches are applied in their own colleges/ classrooms. Implementation of ATL under TTE1 registered significant benefits at college level in terms of enhancing participation of learners in the teaching – learning process. Both lecturers and learners acknowledge that ATL makes learning interesting and in some cases enables wide coverage of curricula in a short time. However, several challenges remain, such as •Greater on-site support is needed for lecturers. This support should be provided by national training coordinators, •The ATL introduction didn’t take into account examinations, which students see as the main drawback. •The development and implementation of ATL methodologies is not yet part of the curriculum and pedagogical methodologies in secondary schools; •There is a need to review the teacher training curriculum and how schools should be prepared for new teachers when they qualify, by providing orientation of schools and institutions where students are going to teach •Schools do not have the facilities and equipment that can maximize the impact of ATL methods and therefore coping strategies need to be developed. In view of this new Project (TTE2), I call upon every stakeholder to fully participate for the success of this Project under the 3 results mentioned above. Let us work together as a Team so that NTC Muni will be better than we found it. As the National Institutional Development Expert/Field Coordinator, I will be available for consultations, discussions and decisions related TTE2 Project activities.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

A GOOD TEACHER ALWAYS STRIVES TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE. I had often noticed a lot of excitement from the student teachers as they report back to the college from school practice. The classroom experience of seven weeks of teaching and the whole school experience of sharing and participating in the various activities together with the staff and the learners is a thrilling and amazing experience for a student teacher. The pride of being referred to as “master”, “madam” all adds up and builds one into the model teacher or the teacher with a difference one desires to be. We the SP supervisors also share in the joy when the practicing schools appreciate the services rendered by our college students. As the students teachers graduate and join the world of work, I have the following pieces of advice which can model them into excellent teachers. •Respect the learners by observing their rights, and refraining from erroneous relationships and physical harm. •Avoid sarcastic verbal and nonverbal communication.

•Avoid sectarian attitudes or being discriminative. •Strive for efficiency, effectiveness, creativity, prudence, and observe confidentiality on sensitive issues. •Always build hope in the learners through the use of rewards, motivational remarks, to make them build self-confidence and strive to succeed. •Cater for learners’ individual differences and be conscious of their needs. •Give learners ample time for consultation and expression of life challenges and helping them to brainstorm critically to be able to decide on the most profitable ways of overcoming those challenges. •Be proud of the teaching profession through maintaining smartness, tidiness and having positive regards. •Be hardworking, humane, kind, considerate, approachable, objective, flexible, and courteous and relate well with others. •Remember, a good teacher is always knowledgeable of the subject matter thus always a good learner who is ever researching and analytic. •Build in the learners, leadership skills through delegation, assigning tasks, responsibilities and authority. •Have respect for authority and bureaucracy. •Always have in mind that ‘fear of God is the beginning of wisdom’. •Finally, be conscious of assessment of learners as the learners, their parents and administration always want to know of performance and behaviour. Thus mark learners ,work promptly, give them feedback and maintain good records of their performance and conduct. Therefore colleagues in the profession and those yet to join, let’s embrace these as essential positive issues as we execute these noble professional responsibilities. The Nation is because We are. In the spirit and pride of NTC Muni of Hard Work for Excellence, I bless you all.

Karmella Okello Deputy Principal-NTC Muni.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS NTC MUNI - ARUA to make this great college a better place to live in. The excellent infrastructure, and very good facilities for Active Teaching and Learning (ATL) experienced and dedicated lecturers and other facilities are all here to harness our potential and help us to become a link in the education sector in Uganda.

It is my pleasure to serve as your Dean of Students. N.T.C Muni is a special place where students explore and develop their passions and the environment challenges students to be critical thinkers and participate in activities outside the classroom to engage their full potential. I encourage you to take full advantage of our unique community of scholars during your time here and fulfill your aspiration in Muni. Allow me extend my sincere heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Governing council and the college management of National teachers’ college Muni for giving me this opportunity to present issues related to the Student Guild.

During my term of office since February 2013 to date, I felt challenged and humbled by the activities of the students’ Guild some of which include the following: - Students’ Accommodation, Health, Games and sports, Feeding, and students’ social life which needs a lot of commitment and sacrifice to handle them very diligently for a harmonious relationships amongst the students. There are gaps for us to bridge

10

The purpose of the Dean of the Students’ Office is to enhance and recognize students’ learning and personal responsibility through: • • • •

•

Resolving students’ issues which may include consultation with staff and Administration. Serving as an information and referral center for the campus community at large. Coordinating a student recognition and awards program for academic and leadership achievement. Holding students accountable for exhibiting conduct incompatible with the academic mission of the college. Which states “To provide quality teacher education and skills training responsive to National, Regional and International need”. Below are a few exciting moments in the life of students’ in form of pictures in NTC Muni.

HEAD OF SCIENCE

Welcome to the latest issue of the NTC Muni college magazine. I do hope you enjoy reading about the wide range of activities undertaken at the college. We are continuing to invest heavily in new teaching and learning facilities here at NTC Muni through Active Teaching and Learning (ATL). The two storey pedagogy building stands adjacent to the new administration building and the new library and is part of the continuing improvement to the provision of support service to the students at the college. The pedagogy building houses ICT laboratory, language rooms, departmental offices and a large science laboratory in addition to the renovated science laboratory block for physics, chemistry and biology. The building also offers self-help browsing area, informal seating facilities and two large teaching / presentation rooms equipped with audio-visual equipment and interactive white board. The building will provide a high level of IT provision for training including audio-visual information and presentation equipment. With the rehabilitation of existing building and construction of new buildings at NTC Muni by TTE phase 2 in place which actually has taken off, NTC Muni is heading in the right direction of becoming a centre of excellence for education lovers. Those who made NTC Muni their first choice did not make a mistake. The time they spent at the college transformed their lives. They, in turn, are transforming the lives of others in the outside world. For now 32 years, the talented people who have been educated here have gone on to achieve greater heights. The hallmark of the NTC Muni graduates is that, whatever they do in life and wherever they go, are bold and make a difference. Thank you for your continued support.

Ipeaju Dennis Caesar. Head of Science Department.

ASPNET CO-ORDINATOR I have the pleasure and honour to give in this magazine some overviews on UNESCO ASPnet activities and some highlights on NTC Muni cultural Gala 2016. UNESCO asp net commonly referred to stands for UNESCO associated schools net. It is a worldwide network which was created in 1953. In 2006 it covered 176 countries and more than 7900 schools and colleges ranging from pre-schools and colleges to secondary and teacher training institutions.

CLINICAL OFFICER I appreciate the college administration for supporting the college health centre and making it more than a sick bay. Apparently the health centre is run by a Clinical Officer and a Registered Senior Nurse operating from Monday to Friday but also able to handle night and weekend emergencies. Almost all common conditions and minor surgical procedures can be handled within the college health centre. Serious medical conditions and surgical procedures are referred to Arua Regional Referral Hospital which is approximately three kilometres away from the college.

Let’s focus more on prevention than on treatment. And not forgetting the leading threat to the youth; HIV/AIDS because current research still indicates no cure to HIV/AIDS yet. I highly urge my dear brothers and sisters to value their lives more than any other thing on this earth. “A healthy body makes a healthy mind.” Kamalha Kithaghenda Enos. Clinical Ofiicer- NTC Muni.

Secondly I appreciate the entire college community for being cooperative especially during health activities like blood donation, HIV/AIDS counselling and testing, Hepatitis B sensitization, testing and vaccination where a good number has always turned up. Lastly, I urge everyone to observe personal hygiene and good sanitation since most of the common diseases are preventable.

MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD PRESIDENT- DEP 2017

I

t’s a pleasure to take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for having brought National Teachers College Muni this far. In a special way I wish to thank the college administration for making the college shine in aspects like infrastructure, appearance, academic excellence, and social relationships in the region of West Nile and Uganda at large. I also thank the Belgian Government through the Belgian Technical Corperation (BTC) for turning the face of the college to a ‘teenage face’. I am grateful to realise that the long-time dream of NTC Muni offering Bachelor in Education is almost becoming a reality. The Early Childhood Development Education started in 2017. Coming to study in NTC Muni is not an accident nor a dream but is the truth. Students should feel at home and enjoy their stay at NTC Muni. Be at Muni. Hard Work for Excellence.

His Excellency Amayo Peter. Guild President-DEP 2017/18

MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD PRESIDENT- DES 2017 Leadership Being a leader is something more tasking and very interesting, and more so in such a multicultural institution like NTC Muni having different cultures from allover the country drawn together. There are too many demands on you as a leader besides the expectations that people have about you in academic work. I thank the Almighty God for the challenging opportunity and wisdom He gave to push up to where we ended. Participating in many assignments beside academics can make one become stressed, unless you prioritize and delegate responsibilities. As a leader, people will always look to you in times of crisis for solutions which they sometimes expect very soon, but if you are a good leader, you will always address them appropriately.

Apart from that, there is always a watch on your social life and how your performance is. So as a student leader, there is high expectation that you lead in every area and be an example to the rest to copy. I am therefore grateful to share what I have learnt as being a leader and what a leader should do for success.

These include but are not limited to the following;

As a priority, good leadership starts with God and focuses on God for directions, not on self ability. • Be organized and don’t get overwhelmed • Get to know the people you lead and understand them • Set a good example • Be a mentor • Be a catalyst for change • Be a learner • Value others

Practical tips on valuing others

• Demonstrate trust in the decisions and actions of others. • Show respect for those who work with or for you. • Work to enhance the confidence and self-esteem of others. • Demonstrating awareness and concern for the needs of others. TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYBODY IS A SURE AND BEST PATHWAY TO FAILURE.

THE MYSTERY OF MOUNTAIN WATI Mount Wati is the brightest point in the West Nile region and central to the ancestry of the Lugbara people in the area. It is 125 meters above sea level and is located in Erea Parish in Aii-vu Sub-County, Terego County. High atop the mountain is a collection of stones sandwiched by seemingly deserted woodland. This area has the old gravesite of Oli ‘Banale the ancestor of the Lugbara who speak the Terego dialect. Not far from the ancestral grave is a natural crater which the locals named Mbidri from which water that never dries flows. Lightning strikes during the rainy of cloudy weather are common on this mountain. Many tourists visit the mountain but some feel disappointed when they fail to trek up the mountain top. But for the locals, the lower slopes of the mountain offer vast opportunities for hunting game meat. Men and women walk along the mountain slopes with axes and machetes to harvest wood fuel, burn charcoal and get poles for building houses and hoe handles. Cassava and tobacco plantations are a common sight on the mountain slopes alongside other agricultural activities. Legend has it that for ages atop the mountain, a grinding stone, four poles of a grain store and a clay pot shaped like a calabash(saku), were put on Oli ‘Banyale’s grave. These items symbolize the most common things that Oli ‘Banyale used in his lifetime. Whenever the termites destroyed the poles,

16

the elders would replace them. Visitors to the grave placed old currency coins in the saku to ‘seek blessings’ from the ancestors. An unknown person is said to have stolen the saku with the thousands of coins that nearly filled it. The suspect allegedly exchanged the coins and bought a car. The theft triggered a severe drought that forced elders from all over Terego County to analyse the situation and find means of appeasing their ancestors again. They collected ‘dokoro’ (a mixture of fermented maize and cassava flour) to make kpete (a local beer) and slaughtered a sheep on the grave. As soon as the ritual was performed and the people ate and drank, heavy rains started. The jolly people ran down the mountain to avoid lightning. The thief’s car then broke down and was never seen on the road again. However, some fundamentalist Christians accused the elders of turning the mountain top into a place of devil worship. They stormed the area, burnt the granary poles and vandalized the previously neat grave. The grave can only be restored by rituals performed by the elders. Ombili Ceasar

MY FIRST LETTER TO MY FIRST PRINCESS AT THE COLLEGE You are like drought Coz you bring concerns to my heart,P.O. BOX………LOVE 10th March 2017

Hi Sweeti, It’s me Cent, writing to inform you about my sad and lonely feelings at the college these days. Pliz I can’t help thinking about you. There is nothing else I can do when these crushing desires come to drag me toward you like the 2010 landslide in Bududa. But the logic and reason get my head together and I find a way to put up with your staggering absence. In fact is not until I saw you that I believed that there are humans who are beautiful and glittering like there are like a garden of sunflowers. For this reason, I would like to slake these desires by nearly stifling you with so many kisses and hugs. I just want to put an end to this thing of being away from you after all. You know how sweet it is when I am on you. Our love is gracious and pleasing as a sea breeze, passionate, and dramatic as a hurricane. Every scene counts as I grow anxious and eager to see you again. But at last, it’s good to be in love, to be loved and t miss someone. Its good to think of you when we are distant but to be by your side is better. To be able to look at your eyes and feel you love me as well is better. Nothing compares to that…..this reciprocal feeling, this huge craving that intoxicate us is the proof that we were meant to be together. Remember, love is like an hour’s glass, brain emptier and heart fills up. What else! Two hearts, one soul, one beat. love you -Centurio

THE POWER OF LOVE

DO ME A FAVOUR

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Who shall snare or slay the while dove faith. Whose very dreams crown it guard it round with grace and peace, deep warm and pure . And say I as sweet sleep many waters cannot quench love neither can the floods drown it . Set me as a seal upon thine heart. As a seal upon thine arm how should we behold the days depart and the nights resign their charm? Love is as the soul: Though hate and fearwaste and overthrowing they strike not hereset me as a seal upon thine heart as a seal upon thine arm

Dear sweet heart, depriving me of my Happiness and inflicting pain in my progress Wounds me more than an injury sustained From a fatal accident.

LOVE I have found the love of my life, At first when we met, I became – As motionless as Napoleon at the Battle of waterloo after his final defeat. Because she is so fascinating, Her lips are red-hot In a way that if roses were and , Violets could be blue, It would take us to a place And you would see my true colours For what I felt for.

Oh love! Am dying of action Because I am madly in love with you Infact my life is incomplete without you I idolised you with all my heart, mind, Body, and soul. I am glad of having found you, The world becomes too small for me That I cannot hold it in my hands. If you said you were cold, I would wrap my arms around you, And if you said you were thirsty, I would give you the blue ocean. Elwelu John Michael

BE OF INSPIRATION Life is a step by step journey. Life is a very long journey indeed. This journey starts from the very first day we set our feet into this world up to the very day we breathe our last. While on this journey, take one step at a time to be successful and prosperous. Do not rush to do things leaving others undone. A case in point is when you are at school and want to ‘over enjoy life’. You will never be successful so just let school be your first step and when you are done with it, then you can take the other step of having all the fun you desire. He who loves the rose must bear with the thorns. When you have the zeal or desire for something, then you must be ready to bear the challenges that come along with it. Everything in this world has its challenges but can be overcome. Learn to cope with them. To achieve you dream career, you have to withstand the bitter roots of education because where there is a will, there is a way. Once you are willing to take on something, then surely you will attain positive results. But if you are doing something you are forced to, you will never achieve anything. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. God should always come first in everything you do and once this becomes your policy, then be assured of wisdom, success, prosperity and His mercy. Jakisa Henry

A TEACHER’S MORNING PRAYER O God, Giver of the gift of life, bless me this day as I go to teach. I thank you for my career, and for the health and enthusiasm you have given me. I thank you for using me to shape the future of the nations. I thank you for my students and friends through whose company joys are doubled, sorrows soothed and weaknesses changed into strength. Help me to be cheerful today, kind and loving to my students so that they may be happy in my company.

WISE SAYINGS It is easier to nurse a pregnancy, but bringing up a child is the hardest part. Never strive to make everyone happy because you will end up being a failure in all your endeavours by the end of the day. Never tell people your problems because a quarter will not care, a quarter will laugh at you while the rest have more problems than you have. The odour from the mouth of an old man stinks but the words are very sweet. When people forget the good you do to them, also forget the forgetful. Never hate the problems, it is the only tool for measuring one’s friendship with others.

LIFE MIRROR

It is very unfortunate that most people forget to work harder and instead work much, for instance persistence in not doing a lot of nothing. However, all this is driven by a motive to change their life status. Despite that, the majority think that working hard is proportional to wealth and thus, could make them appear better than others which is deceptive in life. The true mechanism of life is that never struggle to be better than other people instead struggle to be better than what you used to be and perhaps what you have been. This will make you a better person in life because competing to be better than anyone else may lead you into trouble and incur loses to conform your desires, nevertheless, no one is poor on this planet.

HATE NOT MY CHILD Hate not, my child It is those who hate that are hurt. And those who hurt are hated! Their lives, Hard and difficult are made. Wishing others bad luck, Unfortunately it rebounds on them. Relentlessly, they ask themselves what happened. Oh! But their mouths and tongues tied. Remember there is no ready answer for a failure. All the same, Do not hate yourself however much you are disappointed. Just know days come and go. Believe that change is part of life. Whereas your enemies rejoice, Keep in mind that you can do better Your failure today might mean something else…… Always keep a distance from the word ‘hate’ To live a life of happiness and success

I tried to value grandma’s words but I now see her nowhere. UPGRADING AT NTC MUNI

Upgrading oneself in education is a great indicator of national development. Within the material time I have spent in education primary in this NTC Muni from 2014 to 2017, the college has highly qualified, devoted and professional lecturers who are always ready to help their students in all aspects of education and professionalism. As a DEP student, I want to believe in my fore comrades that joining NTC Muni is ‘creation of a greater vision’ which will positively mentor individuals, the country and even the whole world. I can’t remember which other institution has well installed library and ICT like NTC Muni as supported by BTC.

never the environment of yesterday and the environment tomorrow will never be the environment today. So, let’s remain focused.

A TEACHER MATTERS. I AND MY PROFESSION Teaching is unique among all the professions. When I was still in high school, I thought a teacher was just a classroom teacher. However, as I joined NTC Muni, I realised a teacher is as precious as jewellery. First of all, I asked myself, “How did the president become a president, the MPs become MPs, doctors become doctors?” It comes to my nose that, a teacher is a brilliant character. All the other professions come through the hands of the teacher.

Mogga Emmanuel Silvano English/Literature

Did you know? A teacher is a stepping stone for the nation, giant and unique. I was not oriented much about the teaching profession until I joined NTC Muni. I realise I have joined the most valuable profession in the world. In fact it is the teacher who guides, directs, empowers, counsels and embraces unity and harmony in the society. Dear, comrades, it is not by accident that you are here today. God has a purpose for you as to why you are opposed to stereotyping and you will find the values of being a teacher. For God and my country.

DRESSING CODE Bees will always follow the flower until they get the nectar for processing the honey. It has been a great challenge in the college between the spinsters, bachelors and those who intend to involve themselves in the relationship. One may wonder why some boys tend to dress well leaving others in a sorry state and the same story to the ladies. In a survey carried out by the brilliant boys Ejoyi Job and Nyakuni Robert, when a particular student tends to improve on his dressing code and housing, there is a secret behind . So, couples tend to dominate most of the percentage of smartness in the college. In relation to the above, gents of Sam Nujoma Hall happen to spend most of their time in playing football , eating , studying and even watching football since they have nothing to do with the relationships. However, the activity of relationships has been left a great economic impact on gents since the parasitic ladies tend to drive the boys into chewing their tuition fee. It has been discovered that ladies clear the tuition fee before boys who are forced to recover from the loses they encounter. In another development carried out, smartness does not look at how much your dresses cost or how expensive they are but how they fit you. In the college, when you put on free holding trousers

26

and shirts, students definitely nickname you to be ‘a colonial person’ and the opposite is true when you put on ‘kacupa’ and fitting shirts they brand themselves as ‘dot com’ persons. It is very contrasting for teachers to involve themselves in such a wrong person. In Ecclesiastes 3, it is written that there is a time for everything. To harm either modernization or tradition, I may say that it looks absurd for someone to put on short tight clothing that pushes contours on someone’s buttocks and shamelessly they go to worship places and offices. These things discredits our culture. Maybe when someone puts all these nonsense to go and attend night clubs, we can believe that he/she has been invaded by evil spirits and we may send such a person serious prayers. But remember your body is the temple of God, so keep it safe and clean and hide it from Satan and do not tempt anyone in this day to join Satanism (devil worship). ‘a person is tempted and when he is drawn away and trapped by his own evil desire, then his evil desire conceives and gives birth to death’ James1:14-15 We say all these in the name of our lord Jesus. Ejoyi Job and Nyakuni Robert

I AM A TEACHER I AM A TEACHER because it is my CALLING Sometimes I look at my certificate, my school, My pupils and my road as I compare it with my Salary, I laugh …………God bless the profession. When I look at what I teach, how I teach it, I thank God For taking me through college. But when I sit down and look at the past, how the end Has been for some teachers as compared to other professionals, I feel sorry for the profession. But when I remember that it is the TEACHER that makes All other professionals, I feel blessed. I am SATISFIED when I see my students becoming useful to the society. I conclude that teaching is not my job. It is my work. It’s my CALLING. It’s my PURPOSE. I feel proud being a teacher. I LIVE to Teach!!!!

THIS WORLD OF TREASURES AND LUXURY Today’s world is indescribable, full of instincts. This derails and deprives the contemporary youth of their future expectations under the guise of modernisation. The world today is heading into ruin and disaster just because of vanities. As said by Ngugi wa Thiongo, the contemporary generation reject something to cover themselves of challenges saying ‘my worm does not allow me eat certain things’ which in reality is a total lie and this makes them behave in a weird way which is full of treachery. Recently, I was going to Arua town. On my way, I met a lady of nineteen. Do you know what transpired? This girl put on a tight T-shirt and skin tight trousers which she said is legging and this legging was just a transparent one and this exposed her body and this seemingly appeared as though she was naked. Worst still the lines of her underwear were visible. But she was comfortable. On the contrary, I felt out of place but for her it was just normal. So I kept asking myself the question ‘where is the world heading to?’ but I failed to ensure any answer. But as I kept reminiscing the past, I got to realise that this was yet the start!

28

Today, people struggle and yearn to reach all that glitters without seeing its innermost since treasure and luxury is the motive. Politics is accompanied by luxury and makes leaders forget their real work and focus on money to show off at the expense of the innocent. On the other hand, the youth have lost moral and social values in the process of attaining their luxurious interests. Leave alone the youth, even the elders have fallen short. And all these can only regress if the politics of the world is positively reinforced, religious leaders perform their duties to the best, and parents offer what they can to the fullest right from the birth of a child up to the time he or she is married.

VICTORIOUS VIEW •It’s not how many times you get knocked down that counts but it’s how many times you get back up. Therefore a failure is no more a permanent condition than success! For even if you succeed, there’s still another test. •I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life but I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well. And there’s only one way to succeed in anything and that is to give it everything. •The only person who can really motivate you is ‘you’. Hence in three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life; it goes on.

THE BEACH IN THE COUNTRYSIDE Life at the beach is worth living to those who love nature. The quiet and cool ambiance. Fresh air from the lake. The beautiful gardens with beautiful scents. The pastures well laid like beds. Water of the lake that form beautiful waves that beat against the beach. The sand well tided, which attracts the sight of the eye. I love it because it’s quiet. The environment is cool. You can never be affected by cunning weather. For example, too much sunshine. It’s just like it was balanced to suit human life. The water looks magnificent glittering in the sunshine, wow! wow! Wow! You can’t help liking it.

AGRICULTURE AT NTC MUNI Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda. Therefore NTC Muni has the vision of establishing commercial farming and a centre for learning agriculture through equipping students with knowledge, skills and change in attitude and self-reliance. The agriculture students should acquire practical skills and positive skills towards agriculture. They should promote gender in agriculture and further their education in the subject.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Earning. Never depend on a single income. Make investments to create a second chance. Spending. If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need. Saving. Do not save what is left after spending but spend what is left after saving. Risks. Never test the depth of a river with both feet. Investments. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. Experiences that matter to me and you. When bad things happen in your life you have three choices to make; you can either let it build you, or destroy you or let it strengthen you. Empty pockets teach you a million things in life but full pockets can spoil you in a million ways. Our eyes are in front because it is more important to look ahead then to look back. We used pencils when we were small but now we use pens. Do you know why? It is because mistakes in childhood can be erased but not now. Today is tomorrow’s yesterday, what you do now will be called yesterday. May these humble words above make a difference in your life. Dramadri Majid Majub Majid

WHEN TO BE SILENT

1. Be silent in the heart of anger 2. Be silent when you don’t have all the facts 3. Be silent when you haven’t verified the story 4. Be silent if your words will offend a weaker person 5. Be silent when it is time to listen 6. Be silent when you tempted to make light of holy things. 7. Be silent when if you would be ashamed of your words later. 8. Be silent when you are tempted to talk about sin. 9. Be silent if your words convey a wrong impression 10. Be silent if the issue is not of your business. 11. Be silent when your words will damage a friendship 12. Be silent if your words will damage someone else’s reputation 13. Be silent when you are feeling critical 14. Be silent if you can’t say it without screening it. 15. Be silent if your words will be a poor reflection of the Lord or your friends and families. 16. Be silent if you have already said it more than one time. 17. Be silent when you are supposed to be working. Kilasi Peter Chemistry/Mathematics

LEADERSHIP VIEW • You will never be a leader unless you first learn to follow and be led. Therefore integrity is the most valuable and respected quality of leadership. TEN TIPS ON HOW TO REMAIN POOR 1. Never wake up early. Keep stretching and turning in bed until you get hungry to continue dozing. If there are no bed bugs, why hurry to get up? 2. Never plan how to spend your money whenever you get it. Start spending it right away and when you finish, you try to count and recall how you spent it. 3. Don’t think of saving until you get big money. How can you save when you earn so little? Those telling you to save are not sympathetic to your burning needs. 4. Don’t engage in activities usually reserved for the uneducated. How can you a degree or diploma graduate engage in petty trade, network marketing or home based production? That’s for the people who never went to school. 5. Don’t think of starting a business until an angel comes from heaven and gives you capital. How do they expect you to invest before you earn millions? Even though; businesses in your own town were started with little capital, you as a smart person can only start with millions. 6. Complain about everything except your own attitude and laziness. Blame the system around you, the government, and the banks that refused to give you money. They are all bad and do not want you to get rich. 7. Spend more than you earn. To achieve this buy consumer goods, or products on credit and keep borrowing from friends or employers. 8. Compete in dressing. Make sure you are wearing the latest clothes. Intimidate the congregation with your trendy fashions every Sunday. Whenever your neighbour buys a new phone, buy a new one that is more expensive. 9. Get yourself a nice second hand car that costs more than three times your annual salary. 10. Give your children everything they ask for since you are a loving parent. They should not struggle for anything because you do not want them to suffer that way. They will grow up lazy and poor enough to ensure that they can’t help you at old age. Atandu Sunday.

SO AMAZING

LIVESTOCK PROJECTS

John was given a sponsorship abroad while still young and his parents were fast ageing. So as he was leaving, he thought that by the time he would get back, his parents would be too old to remember him since he was going to spend many years away while still studying. After many years, he sent some medicine to them accompanied with a letter that read; Dear mum and dad, I am sending this medicine for you. Please drink it and become younger so that by the time I come back, I will find when you are still young enough to remember me. 20 years later, John finished his studies and came back home. On reaching he found his mother sweeping the courtyard while carrying a baby on her back. John was welcomed and he immediately asked, ‘Where is dad?’ The mum sat down and told him, ‘My son, I was the first to take the dose of the medicine you sent us. When I became young and more beautiful, your father was tempted to take an overdose to become younger and handsome. Then John asked, ‘Where is he?’ The mother replied, ‘He is the one I am carrying on my back.’

THE VALUE OF A TEACHER Indeed teachers may sound puerile for having been tabled as a motion for debate in primary schools . For most of you who went to schools that have the culture of debating, it is very realistic in life. Teachers are the most important category of people in our communities. I say this because without their input, many things would not be achieved. All the knowledge and mastery that doctors, engineers, name it have, a teacher has a hand in it. Despite that fact that teachers’ direct and indirectly influence is about 75% of the communities’ prosperity, in a country like Uganda teachers are not only poorly paid but also undermined as if they are not a great contributing factor to the social service sector. If I was the head of state of this country, I would consider paying the teachers a much higher salary to improve on their welfare. In any case, this should not discourage teachers from continuing with the wonderful job they are doing. Keep it going unconditionally and you will get blessings from above.

MUNI PENTECOSTAL FELLOWSHIP We as a family of Muni Pentecostal Fellowship bring you warm greetings through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. It is by God’s grace that we have been able to stand. What on earth am I here for? You are not an accident. Even before the universe was created, God had you in mind and then He planned for His purposes. These purposes will extend far beyond the few years you will spend on earth.

It’s a wrong place to start discovering the meaning and purpose of your life by looking within yourself. You must begin with God your creator and His reasons for creating you. You were made by God and for God and until you understand that, life will never make sense. Therefore knowing God’s purposes for creating you will reduce your stress, help you focus your energy, simplify your decisions, give meaning to your life and most important, prepare you for eternity.

THE LONG AWAITED FOR ST. MATHIAS CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE VERGE OF COMPLETION
