From the President Time seems to move rather quickly and we find ourselves once again in the Holiday Season. I would like to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The past year the Association has gone through a few changes, recently Jeff Winton who has been serving as an RWDCA board member stepped down due to family and other business obligations. I would like to thank him for his service and wish him the best. With the by-law changes to reduce our board from 9 to 7 the board elected not to appoint a replacement for Jeff. We just finished up with the fall show season, congratulations to all who participated and did an excellent job in promoting the Red and White cow. The All-American contest once again has over 150 entries, the excitement regarding the Red and White cow continues to increase year to year. We have been working on and have in place a system to better serve you with more current and up to date information. Our website will serve as a tool to keep our membership more up to speed with the latest Red and White news, we will be adding the HAUSA reports along with other information to help each of you make more informed decisions. We are working on an online subscription to the magazine, in addition online bill payment options that will simplify membership and bill paying. The world seems to revolve around twitter, facebook and instagram, we are also working on tools that will link each of these forms of communication to our updates on our official RWDCA website. The bloodlines is and will continue to be a very important part of our promotional package, in a changing world we must adapt. Your board has been working hard to implement and stay current with today’s marketing options. Our goal initially will be to send text and email blasts to each of you when new website updates are available. We will provide the link to simplify the access process, ( just click the link). January we will be offering opportunities to share your day to day success stories via , twitter, facebook, instagram and the RWDCA website. We will have detailed options and pricing beginning in January 2017. As with many of you the past couple of years have been challenging, a changing advertising market, limited discrectionary income, employee turnover, etc. Like you we have faced the challenges head on, the Association is headed in the right direction. I would encourage you to be involved as much as you can with the Association and its activities. We are striving to provide opportunities for all who have a desire to be involved with the Red and White Cow whatever that desire and passion might be. Sincerely, Michael Brown RWDCA President

An Update From Your National Red & White Queen

As show season winds down and we prepare for the winter, it is a perfect time to reflect on all of the accomplishments our members had over the summer. I would like to personally congratulate everyone who exhibited Red and Whites this year. Whether it be at your county fair, or at one of our national shows, you all did a wonderful job representing this breed! Over the past few months, I have been busy advocating for our organization at different shows and events, including the Wisconsin Red and White State Championship Show, Wisconsin Holstein Futurity, All- American and Junior All-American Dairy Shows in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and of course the International Red and White Show at World Dairy Expo in Madison. One of the highlights of the show season was representing the breed at the Calumet County Fair Futurity, which is the place where I showed my first Red and White calf many years ago. At these shows, my duties included handing out awards, working trade shows, attending meetings and talking to Red and White breeders from all over the country. I loved meeting and getting to know so many Red and White enthusiast. I am looking forward to seeing some of you again this spring. I will be attending the Midwest Spring Red and White show in Madison, Wisconsin, and the New York Spring Red and White Show in Syracuse, New York. If you see me at an event, please don’t hesitate to say hello. In the meantime, you can contact me through my Facebook page “National Red and White Queen” or by emailing me at Kenna.Coffeen@Gmail.com. Stay safe and warm this winter!

50 Years of World Dairy Expo Memories for Barb Kayser The excitement remains Kayser shares her 50 years of Expo memories BY KRISTA KUZMA Staff Writer Originally Printed in the 50th World Dairy Expo Daily Edition Although many aspects of World Dairy Expo have changed since its first year 50 years ago, there is at least one thing that has stayed the same. “The excitement for it every year. I look forward to it,” Barb Kayser said. Kayser would know. She has attended every World Dairy Expo since its inception in 1967. Every year, she has returned to Madison, Wis., and the colored shavings, first as a Dairy Cattle Exhibitor and then as a volunteer for the International Red & White Show. Both Kayser and her husband, Alvin, grew up showing dairy cattle, and continued the hobby after they were married and started farming together near Milton, Wis. They attended many local, regional and state shows in Wisconsin with their registered Holsteins. When they heard about World Dairy Expo starting, it only made sense to load up the trailer and prepare their animals for another Showring experience. “At that time, I think it didn’t have the prestige it does now because it was just starting. As the years have gone on it has become quite the show … For me it was another big show we wanted to take one of our good animals to and show people what we had,” said Kayser, who was in charge of her farm’s show string. “The biggest show is World Dairy Expo, and it is right in our backyard.” From then on, every fall, Kayser made the trip to Madison. “I just love the showing part of it,” Kayser shared about World Dairy Expo. In the earlier years, Kayser said she was in the minority as a woman taking care of her show animals. “I started the ‘girls in the barn’ thing,” she recalled. “There were some women who came and showed, but there weren’t many women who came to Expo and stayed there [in the barn] with the string.” Most of the men didn’t treat her differently. “If I needed help with something, they’d help me. They treated me like one of the guys. It wasn’t like I was somebody who didn’t know anything. I felt welcomed at the shows,” Kayser said. The excitement of showing at World Dairy Expo never went away. “It’s a thrill. You never get over that,” Kayser said about walking into the Showring onto the colored shavings. “As many years as I did it, I’d start walking in there and I’d get all excited. I’m still that way. I love being down there. It’s fun. Because it is, to me, the best show in the world; anybody would tell you the same thing when they walk in there.” Every show season, Kayser and her family would try to top their class. In 1975, they did just that. The Kaysers won the Four-YearOld Holstein class with Dunco Kayser Happy Barbara. “She was named after me,” Kayser said with a laugh. “She was a big cow but easy to handle. I could grab her halter and she would put her head up for me. She wouldn’t always do that for other people.” To this day, it remains one of Kayser’s favorite World Dairy Expo memories. “That was the biggest thrill I ever had,” Kayser said about the moment she realized her cow had won. After selling their herd in 2003, the Kaysers only showed a few animals they kept at friends’ farms. After 2007, they decided to hang up their halters for good. But that didn’t mean Kayser was finished with Expo. Since then, she has volunteered her time for the International Red & White Show. "I take vacation time from work every year,” said Kayser, who, since selling the cows has worked at a farm supply store. “I’m here for the whole duration.”

12

Barb Kayser has attended every World Dairy Expo since its inception in 1967. While the recent years have been spent volunteering for the International Red & White Show, Kayser’s earlier years were “Starting the Saturday before Expo, Kayser helps by checking in animals in the New Holland Pavilions and Cattle Tent. During the show, she volunteers as a Showring attendant, recording the placings. Over time, Kayser has seen the show evolve. The cattle keep getting bigger and better,” she said about the biggest change since the inaugural year. “The classes are just tremendous from one end to the other. It used to be, when they first started out, you’d have some classes with really good cows and then they would trail off. But now it’s quite the show. Each year, I think ‘What’s going to be better than this one?’” Overall, Kayser said World Dairy Expo keeps getting better and better in all areas – the Showring, the Trade Show and the Expo Seminars. “So much has changed throughout the years and I don’t think a lot has stayed the same other than the excitement,” Kayser said. “Otherwise it wouldn’t have become the show it is today.”

Meet the Champions

Greenlea AD Avery-Red-ET Junior Champion Premier National Red & White Junior Show Avery is a dream come true for owner Eric Smith, acquired from Richard Green and Lee Emerson. Eric is eternally grateful to those two men for giving him the opportunity to house, develop and exhibit Avery. Avery was the first place winter calf and then named Junior Champion at the Premier National Junior Show. Avery was also the first winter calf and Reserve Junior Champion at the All American Red & White show and third at the International Red & White Show at World Dairy Expo for owners Chris & Jennifer Hill, Matt Hawbaker and Tim & Sharon Abbott.

Ridgedale-T Raichu-Red Grand Champion Premier National Red & White Junior Show America's newest EX-96 red cow, Raichu was bred by Cyrus's father and late uncle, Willis Conard. After my uncle passed away, we sold the animals owned in partnership with him. We retained full ownership of Raichu's dam, who at the time of the sale was carrying a heifer calf- Raichu. When Raichu calved in for the first time, we knew she was special. We continued to watch her develop over the course of her lactation and we decided to enter her at NY Spring Show and World Dairy Expo, where she placed 4th in the open show and 2nd in the Jr. Show and the rest is History. Raichu is 5-TIME All American nominee, has a son in AI, Ridgedale Raimund EX-94 and recently scored EX-96 at 11-09. Raichu has 6 excellent sisters and an EX-92 daughter. Raichu was the winning 125,000 lb cow and Grand Champion of the Premier National Red & White Junior Show at the young age of 12 years old!

Green Meadow Abso Fanny-Red Grand Champion All-American Red & White Show Fanny was purchased from Stanhope by T&L Cattle Company, M Berry, Triple-T and Conroy. After her three year old show season, The Borba's joined in on the fun buying out an exisiting partner. Fanny resides in North Lewisburg, Ohio at Triple-T. Prior to her win at the All American this year, where she was also named the Supreme Champion, she was the third place Four year old at the International Red & White show in 2015 and the Reserve Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair. In 2014 she was the second place Senior Three Year old and Reserve Intermediate Champion at the International Red & Show. Most recently, Fanny was named the first place Five year old and Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair.

Meet the Champions Lyn-Vale CherryWine-Red

Exhibited by: Cole, Ava, Campbell & Royce Booth

Junior Champion International Red & White Junior Show Cherrywine was acquired from Lyn-Vale Holsteins as a young calf. She is a late January Absolute calf from Ava’s very first red and white calf she showed at three years old – Lyn-Vale Chilipepper VG-88, who was nominated All-American Spring Yearling in 2008. We really admired her style and correctness and decided to make her a special project. Since then, Cherrywine has called Booth-Haven Holsteins home. Booth-Haven was established in 2007. Booth-Haven is founded on faith, family and friends and consists of 15 heifers and cows on 37 acres of land north of Plymouth, WI. Cherrywine will return to Lyn-Vale in March, when she calves. The small farm is owned and run by Chris and Courtney Booth and their four children- Cole 15; Ava 12, Campbell 10 & Royce 5. In addition, Chris is a large animal veterinarian and Courtney leads their AdvoCare business out of their home.

Cherrywine has hit the tanbark all year, she was also the Second junior at the Midwest Spring Show. She was also First at Wisconsin Junior State Fair and WI Championship Red & White Junior Show. Cherry Wine was nominated Junior All American and was the Reserve Junior All Wisconsin Winter calf in 2015 Cherrywine's dam, Chilipepper is currently on a flush program and already has daughters by Absolute, Avalanche, Barbwire and Lotus. Cherry Wine is also nominated Junior Heifer of the Year.

Meet the Champions Pheasant-Echo's Turvy-Red-ET EX-95

Exhibited by: Kenny Stambaugh

Grand Champion International Red & White Show Homebred sweetheart, Pheasant-Echo's TurvyRed-ET is an Advent daughter out of the Stambaugh's first homebred Red & White Cow, Pheasant Echo's SS Temper-Red EX-91. Temper was put into Junior showman, Kenny's name to maximize her exposure. All of Temper's offspring were then registered in Kenny's name. Temper's dam was a EX-90 black and white Red Marker daughter. Turvy, was named the Grand Champion at the 2014 Premier National Red & White Junior Show. That same year, she won the black and white holstein futurity at the Maryland State Fair. In 2016, Turvy started the show season out with winning the five year old class and being named Honorable Mention Grand Champion at the New York International Spring Show. She was also the Reserve Grand Champion at the Maryland State Fair. At the International Red & White Show, Turvy was the winning five year old, and then went on to be named Champion Bred & Owned of the show, and eventually Senior and Grand Champion\.

Turvy is housed and cared for by the Stambaugh's at Pheasant Echo's . There she resides on a seperate special pack for the show cows. Just this year the Stambaugh family acquired their first boarding clients and hope to continue that part of their dairy, as room becomes available. Pheasant Echo’s Farm, located on the outskirts of Westminster, Maryland, was founded in August of 1991. Home to the Stambaugh family, the herd began with a 30 cow herd purchased from Owen Martin of Hagerstown, Maryland. Byron and Deborah Stambaugh and their five children, Tanya, Crystal, Julie, Bud and Kenny built the operation from the ground up, growing the herd and business to encompass a milking registered Holstein herd of 150 with a RHA of over 24000M. They eventually purchased the 160 acre farm after renting it for many years, and added 2000 rented acres to their business. Turvy is also nominated Cow of the Year.
