The Dubai EXPO The Event Site The main site of Expo 2020 Dubai was a 438-hectare area (1083 acres) located between the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, near Dubai’s southern border with Abu Dhabi. The master plan, designed by the American firm HOK, was organized around a central plaza, entitled Al Wasl, enclosed by three large thematic districts. Each one was dedicated to one of the sub-themes of Expo 2020 – Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. 8|

The theme of the Expo was
“Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. The expo also had three subthemes: opportunity, mobility and sustainability each with its own pavilion. Mission Possible – The Opportunity Pavilion is designed by AGi Architects, Alif – The Mobility Pavilion by Foster and Partners, and Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion by Grimshaw Architects.

The project is a display of experimental solutions to “water scarcity, energy transition and food shortages on a life-sized scale model.” Water is harvested from air humidity and used for plant irrigation, with the pavilion extracting 800 litres of water daily. The process is powered by renewable energy obtained through lightweight, organic transparent solar cells or OPV designed by artist Marjan van Aubel.

NETHERLANDS A New Temporary Biotope in the Desert The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai proposes a circular climate system that harvests water, energy, manufactures rain and produces food, creating a temporary biotope that embodies the fusion between art, architecture and technology. SINGAPORE “Nature . Nurture . Future”, The Singapore Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai illustrates the city’s aspiration towards a sustainable future that merges architecture, nature, technology and culture. Designed by WOHA Architects. The multi-layered green space creates a self-sufficient ecosystem highlighting ideas of sustainability and resilience through the marriage of technology and nature.

Featuring more than 170 varieties of plants from diverse habitats in Singapore and set within different layers of greenery, from hanging gardens to vertical walls, the pavilion creates a tridimensional green space, taking visitors through tropical rainforests, mangrove areas and forest streams.

The concept refers to the substance of the S.A.W.E.R. system as the heart and technological core of the pavilion. Its substance that is manifested on many levels is transformation. It turns air in water, arid desert in a flowering garden and it also changes the way people perceive the Czech Republic. CZECH REPUBLIC Organic cloud structure that grows out from the garden at the place of the cultivated desert Located in the sustainability zone of EXPO 2020 Dubai, the Czech pavilion, designed by Formosa AA and R/ FRM, is an invitation for discovery. Raising questions concerning desert cultivation, it integrates and exposes the S.A.W.E.R. system cultivation plant.

AUSTRIA Austria makes Sense A grid of truncated cones will unfolds to create patterns of light and shadow. The cone forms will be carefully engineered to invite the visitor to rest and contemplate the surrounding exhibition. An interdisciplinary jury of experts recommended the project “in dialogue with Austria” under the direction of Querkraft Architekten.

The exhibition area for the Austrian pavilion will be located between Switzerland and China in the Opportunity district: “unlocking the potential within individuals and communities to shape the future”. In a time where huge amounts of information create misleading answers for complex issues, the Austrian Pavilion will focus on a framework of innovations.

“The Green Arch” is based on a “bridge-building”, creating an immense vault with double curvature between its two pillars. This curvaceous vault is generated from a universal mathematical minimum surface called “hyperbolic paraboloid”. This paraboloid is built in CLT - Cross Laminated Timber - with more than 5.5 linear kilometers of spruce louvers generating a giant wooden Mashrabiya - which by rotating of 180 degrees - envelops the entire project to better protect it from solar radiation.

POLAND the Flight of Birds Through Kinetic Sculpture Designed by Warsaw-based architecture practice WXCA and Swiss studio Bellprat Partner, the Polish Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai is a nod to the country’s natural landscapes representing an essential part of Polish identity. Through a modular structure enveloped by a kinetic sculpture resembling a flock of birds, the idea of mobility while showcasing the natural connection established by bird migration between Poland and UAE.

INDIA 75 years of India’s independence The India Pavilion has been recognised among the top three pavilions at the Expo 2020 Dubai for its exclusive design and innovation, under the ‘People’s Choice’ category by the Exhibitor Group. This is the first time in the history of the World Expo that India Pavilion has bagged such accolade.

AZERBAIJAN A microcosm of conscious design We were inspired by two iconic natural elements, a leaf and a tree, which were transformed into the architecture of our project. The architecture evokes a tree whose trunk, from the roots to the foliage, supports a leaf. Lying on its side, the leaf covers and protects the central structure. The lower side area around the tree – also called Agora – can be accessed directly from outside.

Atlantis was designed by Wimberly, Tong and Goo, an international firm specialising in luxury hotel complexes. The design incorporates classical Arabian architecture in both the interior and exterior of the 23-storey hotel, with semi-precious stones, intricate fossilised shells and ‘fish’ stones included throughout. The Atlantis, The Palm art collection includes works by hundreds of artists, all of which were selected to give guests the experience of what it was like to actually visit the Lost City of Atlantis.

MUSEUM of FUTURE World’s most beautiful building The ‘Museum of the Future’ is located in Dubai and is touted as the ‘world’s most beautiful building’. It is located on Sheikh Zayed Road, the city’s main highway. The museum is a seven-story hollow elliptical structure.
