Cronins Wood Killarney Case Study

Page 1

ABOUT THE CLIENT AND PROJECT

Cronin’s Wood is a multi-unit residential scheme in Killarney comprising of 249 homes. The delivery team included KPH Construction (Builder), Meitheal Design Partners (Architect), DKP (Consulting Engineer), NOC Heating and Plumbing (Mechanical Installer) and Dennehy Electrical (Electrical Installer)

The project consisted of multiple dwelling types including terraced, semi-detached, and detached houses. There were a small number of apartments with electric heating

The client’s key objectives were:

Provision of a two-zone heating layout in each dwelling with steel panel radiators on b ump effic Stan plify proc Com user inter Com with verif

SOLUTION OVERVIEW

The consulting engineers, D & K Partnership, specified a standardised renewable heating system across all units.

Each dwelling is equipped with a Mitsubishi PUZ-WM50VHA monobloc air-to-water heat pump paired with a Mitsubishi EHPT20X-MHEDWR1 pre-packaged cylinder and FTC7 control system. This combination provides space heating via steel panel radiators on both floors and delivers efficient domestic hot water production using plate heat exchanger technology for rapid recovery

The use of R32, environmentally friendly, low GWP refrigerant and the monobloc design ensures regulatory compliance and reduced installation complexity.

Each dwelling features two heating zones and occupants can independently control ground and first-floor temperatures.

The system’s FTC7 controller uses weather compensation to modulate flow temperature in response to outdoor conditions, maintaining optimal heat pump efficiency under varying loads

Domestic hot water is produced by the integrated pre-packaged cylinder, which includes a 3 kW immersion heater for legionella control

The design ensures ease of commissioning, consistency across units, and simplified service support for long-term operation

Mitsubishi PUZ-WM50VHA

Monobloc Air-to-Water Heat Pump

The Mitsubishi PUZ-WM50VHA was chosen as it delivers a maximum output of approximately 5 kW (A7/W35) and achieves flow temperatures up to 60°C.

Typical SCOP values exceed 4.0, supporting compliance with NZEB and SEAI performance requirements.

Notable Features

Monobloc design eliminates the need for F-Gas certification during installation

Inverter-driven compressor for precise capacity modulation and excellent performance.

Quiet operation suitable for residential environments

FTC7 controller compatible with two heating zones

Mitsubishi EHPT20X-MHEDWR1 200L

Pre-Packaged Water Heater – 200 Litre

To provide fast, efficient domestic hot water production using integrated plate heat exchanger technology optimised for R32 monobloc heat pumps.

A Mitsubishi 200 litre pre-packaged indoor unit was specified as it delivers high recovery rates suitable for large domestic households. It also integrates a 3 kW immersion heater for legionella control Note - 170L version was used in some of the smaller houses.

Notable Features

Plate heat exchanger design improves DHW recovery times. Factory pre-packaged with connections above Compact footprint suited to modern dwellings. Automatic hot water temperature management.

INSTALLATION

Installation was carried out by NOC Heating & Plumbing Ltd. The standardised system allowed easy installation and supported efficient phasing of works across the multi-unit development.

RVR Energy Technology provided technical support throughout the project and commissioning of all heat pumps. All parties worked together to maintain the project schedule.

Key Points

Consistent comfort levels and rapid DHW recovery for all 249 dwellings

Up to 70% reduction in primary energy usage compared with conventional boiler systems.

Environmentally friendly, low GWP operation using R32 refrigerant

Simplified installation and minimal maintenance due to monobloc configuration.

The system achieves compliance with Part L and NZEB regulations, positioning the development as a model for sustainable housing in Ireland.
