The Richmond Symphony’s flagship educational program, founded in 1962, consists of five youth orchestras providing beginning to advanced musical training. As the premier orchestral training program of central Virginia, students participate in weekly rehearsals, coaching and masterclasses by Richmond Symphony musicians, chamber music performances, mentoring and other musical and social activities. The Youth Orchestra Program (YOP) is open to violin, viola, cello, bass, flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, harp and percussion students in elementary through high school.

From Gershwin’s Fascinating Rhythm and early jazz classics like Alabama Stomp to Teddy Weatherford’s My Blue Heaven and the groove-driven sounds of Lonnie Liston Smith and Wah Wah Watson, the evening highlights Richmond’s long connection to the evolving traditions of jazz, soul, funk, and American popular music that grew from local communities into internationally influential art forms.

The Richmond Symphony and the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts present the world premiere of Remembering Empathy, a powerful new orchestral work co-commissioned by both organizations. Created by composer Tamar-kali and librettist and spoken-word artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, the work combines symphonic music and spoken word to explore themes of memory, history, truth, and collective imagination. Performed by the Richmond Symphony under the direction of Valentina Peleggi, Remembering Empathy is the culmination of a multi-year artistic and community collaboration.

Each pre-recorded episode focuses on the repertoire of an upcoming Symphony Series concert and is available to watch anytime after it is posted. Throughout the season, special guests—including Music Director Valentina Peleggi, guest artists and composers—offer unique insights into the music. Through recordings, images, historical context, biographies and backstage stories, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the music and the artists who bring it to life.
