Attendance Policies:

Students are expected to attend class regularly.

In case of illness or family emergency, please notify your Instructor prior to class through our Education Office at 727.712.2706. Students are allowed to miss 3 classes, any additional absences may alter participation in the final performance.

PRIVATE lessons Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all students who wish to strengthen their performance skills. The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts offers private instruction including repertoire and literature from classical to contemporary.

Private Lesson Fees and Policies

Lesson Fees are as follows: $25 - $37 for 30 minutes $37 - $55 for 45 minutes $50 - $73 for 60 minutes

• We accept credit or debit cards. For your convenience, automatic payment for private lessons is available. Lessons will not be provided without payment.

• Private Lesson Cancellation Policy: All cancellations made at least 24 hours prior to the lesson will be offered a makeup lesson. If a student misses a lesson without notifying an Education Associate in advance, or is unable to attend a scheduled makeup, a lesson fee will be charged.

• Inclement Weather Policy: Classes are occasionally cancelled due to inclement weather, and will be rescheduled.

INSTRUMENTAL jazz The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts is known for setting the standard of jazz education in the Tampa Bay Area. Our program includes students from four surrounding counties, with many alumni studying in our country’s top music schools; including Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. The Jazz Track is sponsored in part by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation.

Auditions: For all NEW students January 14 – 5:15 - 6pm.

Students are placed in ensembles based on their knowledge of music theory, instrument proficiency, and improvisation skills.

Auditions will include: • Memorized scales: Concert Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, F, C, and chromatic (two octaves) • Memorized prepared piece, short jazz etude or standard • Sight-reading at discretion of the Instructor • Improvisation (optional) on a 12-bar blues form in concert Bb, FMaj, (Accompaniment Track can be provided on request).

• Drummers should be able to demonstrate swing, ballad, Latin, and funk.

Theory/Improvisation Lab Ages: 12 - 19 (Big Band 2 students only) Mondays, 5:30 - 6pm Tuition: Included with Big Band 2 tuition Classes start: January 14 Classes end: April 22 NO CLASS January 21, March 4 & 11 This 30-minute weekly session is designed especially for younger, less experienced improvisers. The content includes: chord definition and structure, chord to scale/ modal application, ear training, solo development, and transcriptions. Any areas of interest, as determined by the students, will be addressed. A team teaching approach with both Mr. Michael Kernodle and Mr. Frank Williams will be utilized in order to tailor the instruction to student needs and interests more effectively.

Literature for both of these ensembles is selected to challenge and reward students seeking to take their love of jazz to the next level. In each ensemble, the history and development of jazz music is explored, along with tools and opportunities for developing their improvisation skills. Performance opportunities occur often throughout the spring term, and will be conveyed by the Instructors.

Come experience the joy of singing and community building with vocalists from around Pinellas County. With more than forty years of tradition, the Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus is the official adult Chorus of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Chorus Members can look forward to performing a variety of musical styles and genres, in addition to potential performance opportunities outside of the class.

Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus Ages: 19 and up Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8pm Fees per term: $50 Classes start: January 15 Tuesday nights are for singing! Join in for the spring semester with Mr. Yohance Wicks and the members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus. Spring repertoire includes popular, traditional, Broadway and concert literature that is fun to sing, and gives an opportunity for members to learn and grow as musicians.

Master Class: Sight Reading and Intro to Music Theory Ages: 18 and Up Date: February 2 Time: 1pm - 5pm Tuition: $35 A firm understanding of music theory provides the foundational infrastructure onto which all other musical concepts should be built.

Using the Kodaly method of musical education, this course will teach the fundamentals of music theory and sight-reading; beginning with rudimentary concepts such as the musical staff, notation, note duration, aural training, time signature, key signature and dynamic/tempo markings.

Instructor Yohance Wicks will provide a fun and fast moving educational environment conducive to the goals of the beginning musician. Please bring staff paper, pencils, and a desire to have fun!

MUSICAL theater Students will work with our master Instructors in dance, music, and theater to develop themselves into a true triple threat. Sections are available for multiple age levels. Their work will culminate in the Ruth Eckerd Hall Spring Cabaret, a fully produced event showcasing all levels. A great way to head into summer!

dance Love to dance on stage? Love to dance anywhere?! You’ll love this class! Review basic and essential dance skills like rhythm, coordination, strength, flexibility, and personality. Then move on to ballet, jazz, and tap basics catered to the individual student’s progress.

Attire: Ballet and/or jazz shoes, and tap shoes. Leotards (any basic color) are required for ladies which can be layered with form fitting clothes. Hair must be worn back and tights are suggested.

Dance 2 (Ballet and Jazz) AGES: 12 - 18 TIME: Monday, 5pm - 7pm Tuition: $225 Classes start: January 14 Classes end: April 15 NO CLASS January 21, March 11 This is a great class for those more focused on serious training for the stage. Students will work on various dance techniques fit for the Broadway stage: ballet, jazz, strength, flexibility, and history. All levels of experience are welcome, beginners through advanced, and the class will cater to the individual student’s progress.

Attire: Ballet and/or jazz shoes. Leotards (any basic color) with proper support are required for ladies which can be layered with form fitting clothes. Hair must be worn back and tights are suggested. Gentlemen must wear a dance belt and shorts above the knee or flexible, form fitting dance or athletic pants.

Dance 3 AGES: 12+ (with Instructor approval) TIME: Monday, 7pm - 8pm Tuition: $195 Classes start: January 14 Classes end: April 15 NO CLASS January 21, March 11 For those who are looking for the next level of dance training. Students accepted in this class will receive more intensive, career driven training.

Drama 1 AGES: 5 - 7 TIME: Saturday, 10am - 12pm Tuition: $225 Classes start: January 19 Classes end: April 13

While encouraging self-expression and boosting confidence, students will begin to build the “Actor’s Toolbox” made up of the voice, the body and (most importantly) the imagination. Numerous acting exercises and games to create characters, situations, and ultimately their very own play will be presented at the end of the semester.

Drama 2 AGES: 8 - 10 TIME: Saturday, 10am - 12pm Tuition: $225 Classes start: January 19 Classes end: April 13 Students will be introduced to the world of improvisation. Students will learn to trust their choices and think quickly…all the while having a great time! As our improv skills improve (some pun intended!), students will work to create their own character and work together as an ensemble to build stories on the fly! Coursework will be showcased at the end of the semester!

Drama 3 AGES: 11 - 14 Wednesday, 5 - 7pm Tuition: $225 Classes start: January 16 Classes end: April 10 Modern and classic published works will be used, studied, and combined with various acting techniques to assist students in the development of stronger, more truthful moments on stage. Each actor will learn to find which method works best for them while creating a role within a monologue, scene or play. Coursework will be showcased at the end of the semester. Students will also receive a complimentary ticket to Hat Trick Theatre’s production of The Odd Couple (Female Version) in February!

Drama 4 AGES: 15 - 18 Wednesday, 5 - 7pm Tuition: $225 Classes start: January 16 Classes end: April 10 So now that you’ve built your skills, how do you get the job? This class will cover the process of auditioning (headshots, resumes, monologues, cold readings) and how to best ensure that you get the part. To help strengthen your auditioning skills, we will also take a look at various styles and methods of acting. Coursework will be showcased at the end of the semester!

Students will also get the opportunity to observe a rehearsal of the Murray Theatre’s Resident Theater Company, Hat Trick Theatre’s production of The Odd Couple (Female Version) and receive a complementary ticket to the show in February!

Master Class: Acting Audition Workshop – High School Level AGES: 14 - 18 Date: Sat. March 30 Time: 1 - 3pm Tuition: $25 Master Class: Acting Audition Workshop - Adults AGES: 19 and Up Date: Sat. Mar. 30 Time: 5 - 7pm Cost: $25 The audition is where the actor’s job begins. With a focus on monologue preparation, cold readings, and audition etiquette, Instructor Jack Holloway will help you boost your confidence and show the best version of yourself in order to get the job.

WHAT TO PREPARE/BRING 1. A 60 second monologue from a published play (any genre or time period).

2. A printed version of that monologue.

3. Something to write with and something to write on.

ON-CAMERA CLASSES for students & adults Opportunities to work in commercials, film and television abound in the Southeast. On-Camera Acting differs in several specific ways from stage acting. Students who wish to learn on camera acting and/or pursue this profession must fully understand and embrace those differences, easily understand TV & film lingo, become comfortable with cold readings, develop their creative processes for script and role development, and master camera technique as well as having some knowledge of the expectations of the film/TV Industry. Our On-Camera classes offer the opportunity to learn and develop new skills; improve the auditioning process; work with authentic commercial, film, and television scripts; to be challenged and to build each student’s confidence. During the final class of the session, students and their parents will also receive helpful information regarding castings, agents, and photographers.

On-Camera Acting: Adults Ages: 18 and up Wednesdays, 7 - 9pm Tuition: $25 per class Classes start: Ongoing Auditions, character development, scene development, camera technique, memorization techniques, and overcoming nerves is just a small part of the class.

Designed for “newbies” and those already working in the TV/film industry; this class is for anyone seeking a deeper connection to their roles and a higher level of work. The overall focus is on developing and improving skills, creating a better understanding of “the business,” and preparing students to work professionally.
