rivate lessons are strongly encouraged for all students who wish to strengthen their performance skills.
The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts offers private instruction including repertoire and literature from classical to contemporary.
Private Lesson Fees and Policies Lesson Fees are as follows: $25.00-$31.00 for 30 minutes $37.00-$47.00 for 45 minutes $50.00-$62.00 for 60 minutes Please call the Education Office at 727.712.2706 for specific rates per instructor. We accept credit or debit cards. For your convenience, automatic payment for private lessons is available. Lessons will not be provided without payment. Private Lesson Cancellation Policy: All cancellations made at least 24 hours prior to the lesson will be offered a makeup lesson. If a student misses a lesson without notifying an Education Associate in advance, or is unable to attend a scheduled makeup, a lesson fee will be charged. Inclement Weather Policy: Classes are occasionally cancelled due to inclement weather, and will be rescheduled. To cancel or reschedule a lesson contact 727.712.2706 ONE TIME $20.00 enrollment fee is required.

INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ
T
he Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts is known for setting the standard of jazz education in the Tampa Bay Area. Our program includes students from four surrounding counties, with many alumni studying in our country’s top music schools; including Berklee College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. The Jazz Track is sponsored in part by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation.
Auditions: Students are placed in ensembles based on their knowledge of music theory, instrument proficiency, and improvisation skills. Auditions will include: • Memorized scales: Concert Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, F, C, and chromatic (two octaves) • Memorized prepared piece, short jazz etude or standard • Sight-reading at discretion of the instructor • Improvisation (optional) on a 12-bar blues form in concert Bb, FMaj, (Accompaniment Track can be provided on request). • Drummers should be able to demonstrate swing, ballad, Latin, and funk. The Ruth Eckerd Hall Lab Band Ages: 12-19 Mondays, 5:30-6:30PM Tuition: $150.00 Classes start: January 9, 2017 Classes end: April 10, 2017 The Lab Band is designed to give the traditional band student an opportunity to learn jazz styles. theory, and literature. Students are introduced to jazz musicianship concepts which they apply to performance of various improvisatory genres including the blues, big band, and traditional jazz standards. Students will gain instruction in the fundamentals of music, including reading, writing, and listening activities, as well as mastery of the elements essential for improvisation. With the recommendation of the instructors students in this group may participate in Big Band II.

Literature for both of these ensembles is selected to challenge and reward students seeking to take their love of Jazz to the next level. In each ensemble, the history and development of jazz music is explored, along with tools and opportunities for developing their improvisation skills. Performance opportunities occur often throughout the Fall and Spring terms, and will be conveyed by the instructors.

SCHOOL OF ROCK Ages: 10 and up Tuesdays, 5:00-6:30PM Tuition: $175 Classes start: January 10, 2017 Classes end: April 4, 2017 Students will get the “electric” experience of learning and playing together as a group. Our programs are designed to get kids performing as soon as possible, learning how to play popular songs on their favorite instruments and working with a team. Students will also be encouraged to branch out and learn new instruments, and develop as a true rock band!
CHOIRS Choirs at The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts offer opportunities for students ages 7 and up. Students of all choirs learn vocal techniques along with appropriate literature and the ability to read music.

Students involved in the children’s choir create choral landscapes while learning the joy of working together. Performances reflect a diversity of choral repertoire, and a variety of venues. The Ruth Eckerd Hall Middle School Choir Grades 6-8 Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00PM Tuition: $195.00 Classes start: January 10, 2017 Classes end: April 4, 2017 Come join fellow middle school students to develop your talents and perform with students from the Tampa Bay Area. Students in this choir will develop techniques essential to young performers and prepare them for participation in high school musical activities. CLEARWATER CHORUS Come experience the joy of singing and community building with vocalists from around Pinellas County. With more than forty years of tradition, the Clearwater Chorus is the official adult Chorus of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Chorus Members can look forward to performing a variety of musical styles and genres. Clearwater Chorus Ages: 19 and up Tuesdays, 6:30-8:00PM Fees per term: $50.00 Classes start: January 10, 2017 Tuesday nights are for singing! Join in for the Fall Semester with Mr. Yohance Wicks and the members of the Clearwater Chorus. Fall repertoire includes popular, traditional, Broadway and concert literature that is fun to sing, and gives an opportunity for members to learn and grow as musicians. Clearwater Chorus Singers Ages: 19 and up Tuesdays, 8:15-9:30PM Classes start: January 10, 2017 The Clearwater Chorus Singers is an auditioned group of singers from the Clearwater Chorus, looking to augment their choral studies and vocal development with challenging repertoire.
The Center Stage Ensemble is an auditioned group of experienced male and female students. This Ensemble gives students an opportunity to learn varied, advanced choral repertoire and to build musicianship at a college preparatory level. Students will have many opportunities to perform both on and off the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus.

Twinkling Stars Ages: 6-8 Wednesdays, 5:45-7:00PM Tuition: $150.00 Classes start: January 11, 2017 Classes end: April 5, 2017 The sky’s the limit for students as they learn the musical characteristics of the rhythm, melody, tempo, and dynamics. As the students sing songs, they’ll also learn the performance essentials of breath support, singing more clearly through the use of proper consonant and vowel sounds, and the vocabulary unique to the stage.
MUSICAL THEATER TRACK Students will work with our master Instructors in Dance, Music, and Theater to develop themselves into a true Triple Threat. Sections are available for multiple age levels. Their work will culminate in the Ruth Eckerd Hall Spring Cabaret, an exciting event showcasing all levels. A great way to head into the summer! Young Dancers Ages: 5-8 Saturdays, 9:30-10:30AM Tuition: $175.00 Classes start: January 14, 2017 Classes end: April 8, 2017 For our youngest dancers, the introductory classes offer the perfect place to start! Classes are smaller in size to allow for more personalized instruction, for little ones to begin to explore the magical world of dance. Ballet I Ages: 8-12 Ability: 0-2 years of dance training Mondays, 5:00-6:00PM Tuition: $175.00 Classes start: January 9, 2017 Classes end: April 10, 2017 Students will learn the basics of ballet including: the positions of the arms and feet, proper alignment, body directions, and movement, while developing a great appreciation for music. Girls will start building their ankle strength and flexibility in preparation for pointe work and boys will begin building strength in the legs to perform higher level jumps.

Musical Theater Dance I Ages: 8-12 Ability: 0-2 years of dance training Mondays, 6:00-7:00PM Tuition: $167.50 Classes start: January 9, 2017 Classes end: April 10, 2017 Instruction at this level focuses on basic coordination, body alignment, and muscle development. Students will learn the various social dances that have influenced dance in musical theater. In addition, students will begin to learn the skills needed to interpret and understand dance. Musical Theater Dance II Ages: 13+ Ability: 1-3 years of dance training Thursdays, 7:00-8:30PM Tuition: $167.50 Classes start: January 12, 2017 Classes end: April 6, 2017 At this level, basic ballet and jazz dance technique are introduced, and strength, coordination, and energetic movement are emphasized. The dancers will learn several fun pieces of choreography while continuing to develop their ability to interpret the dancer’s art. Tap Ages: Open Ability: Open Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30PM Tuition: $175.00 Classes start: January 11, 2017 Classes end: April 5, 2017 Dancers of all ages and experience levels will discover how slices of metal on the heels and toes of their shoes can transform them into a percussive musician. Tap dance emphasizes rhythm and the flow of movement by teaching the student to find the beats not only in music but in their own bodies. Hip-Hop Ages: Open Ability: Open Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30PM Tuition: $175.00 Classes start: January 11, 2017 Classes end: April 5, 2017 This class will introduce students to the style of Hip Hop movement. Hip Hop is about personal style and expression. This high energy class can be taught to anyone with a passion to move, so no dance experience is required. 14

he Drama curriculum rotates on a three-year cycle to provide a varied and thorough experience for each student. This year’s curriculum will emphasize acting methods and techniques, along with character development and creation. Course work will be showcased at the end of the semester. For students interested in both Drama and Choir, classes are scheduled so that students may participate in both offerings! Level I: Creating Original Work Grades: 1-3 Saturdays, 11:15AM-1:15PM Tuition: $195.00 Classes start: January 14, 2017 Classes end: April 8, 2017 While encouraging self-expression and boosting confidence, students will begin to build the “Actor’s Toolbox” made up of the voice, the body, and (most importantly) the imagination. Numerous acting exercises and games will create characters, situations, and ultimately their very own play - which will be presented at the end of the semester. Level II: Improvisation, Characterization, Monologues Grades: 4-5 Saturdays, 11:15AM-1:15PM Tuition: $195.00 Classes start: January 14, 2017 Classes end: April 8, 2017 Using improv games; techniques; and the concepts of observations, improvisation, pantomime, and monologue study; students will have the opportunity to explore the roles of the mind, voice, and imagination while learning to work as an ensemble.

Level III: Monologues and Scene Study Grades: 6-8 Thursdays, 5:00-7:00PM Tuition: $195.00 Classes start: January 12, 2017 Classes end: April 6, 2017 Modern and classic published works will be used, studied, and combined with various acting techniques to assist students in the development of stronger, more truthful moments on stage. Each actor will learn to find which method works best for them while creating a role within a monologue, scene, or play. Level IV: “Method to the Madness” Grades: 9-12 Thursdays, 5:00-7:00PM Tuition: $195.00 Classes start: January 12, 2017 Classes end: April 6, 2017 In this advanced class, students will explore numerous popular acting methods - such as Stanislavsky, Meisner, and Practical Aesthetics. Skills and techniques will be honed to create richer, truer characters and performances. The class will work together to present monologues and scenes that utilize what the students have learned. Stage Combat Grades: 7-12 Saturdays, 2:30-3:30PM Tuition: $150 Classes start: January 14, 2017 Classes end: April 8, 2017 Let’s get ready to (safely) RUMBLE!!! This action-packed class will introduce students to the essential skills and key concepts of unarmed stage combat. Students will learn to safely perform falls, trips, punches, kicks, blocks, elbows, and other combat techniques; and choreograph their own combat scene to be presented at the end of the semester.

On camera acting differs in many ways from stage acting, and students who wish to pursue this profession must possess a unique skill set, an understanding of vocabulary, camera technique, and an awareness of the expectations of the Film/TV Industry. These classes offer opportunities to learn and develop new skills; improve your auditioning process; work with actual commercial, film, and television scripts; and build confidence. Participants will also receive general information regarding castings, agents, and photographers.
