The Leap of Stones

This project is based in Easdale Island, one of the Slate Islands in Scotland. A side and back extension to the Ferrymen Office is proposed to introduce a better work environment, as well as larger storage. Furthermore, the Passenger Waiting Room is relocated to the Wheel Barrow ‘Parking Space’, right across from the Ferrymen Office.

The project’s core lays on Easdale’s World Stone Skimming Championship. The physics behind the art of stone skimming inspire the Passenger Waiting Room architectural form: Suspended Architecture mimiking a stone skipping water.

The Leap of Stones Easdale Island is known for being ‘the Island that roofed the world’. From the mid-17th Century to the early 20th Century, the island’s economy was supported mainly by a thriving slate mining industry. After in 1881 the seven slate quarries were flooded by a storm, the industry declined. Fast forward to the present day, Easdale’s economy relies mainly on tourism. Since 1997, the charity Eilean Eisdeal has worked on enhancing social, economical and environmental aspects of the Island. One of their great achievements was to bring back to life the Easdale’s World Stone Skimming competition as a yearly fundraiser event, which was initially started in 1983 by the late Bertie Baker. Ironically, this championship takes place in the quarry pools, which once where slate quarries. During the championship, contestants throw slate stones back into the place where they came originally from.
