The Center for Gambling Studies has been named a Center of Excellence by the International Center for Responsible Gaming. The award ($391,497; Lia Nower, PI; Jackie Stanmyre, Vivien (Wen Li) Anthony, and Mark van der Maas, Co-I) will fund a series of studies to examine the bio-psychosocial and genetic risk factors for problem gambling, comorbid mental health, and associated addictive problems in statewide and national epidemiological samples as well as convenience samples of high risk emerging adults, ages 18 to 27. The studies will inform education, prevention and treatment strategies with etiological subtypes of this population as well as to explore the relationship of the level of state gambling involvement to rates of problem gambling.
The Center for Prevention Science has launched a $1.15 million study with the New Jersey Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services to evaluate the state’s opioid response for people in need of medication for opioid use disorder. The initiative aims to reduce opioid misuse, overdoses, and deaths through a comprehensive approach that includes prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery approaches and services.
The Center for Research on Ending Violence received a renewal of its grant from the Victims of Crime Act funding administered through the New Jersey Attorney General’s office to support University-wide training and research totaling $4,000,000 for two years.

In ongoing community-based participatory research (CBPR) with PCA-NJ, Duron and Victoria Spera-Ballesteros, the Program Manager of Community Education, completed a train-the-trainer program in July 2023 through the Detroit Urban Research Center's CBPR Partnership Academy. Duron and Spera-Ballesteros will host a spring 2024 workshop to train communityacademic partnerships to use CBPR in their work promoting child well-being and maltreatment prevention.
Duron, Spera-Ballesteros, and Nicole McKenna, Postdoctoral Research Associate, have received a School of Social Work Seed Grant to develop and study the New Jersey CBPR Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) Prevention Coalition. Duron and colleagues will engage professionals working in practice, policy, research and/or advocacy, including adult survivors of CSA, to promote statewide research initiatives that advance CSA prevention in New Jersey. Duron and colleagues will also invite adult survivors of CSA to participate in a research study that strives to promote the voices of individuals with lived experience in understanding social and cultural norms that influence CSA prevention.
