MSW Graduate Quaniya Jenkins Quaniya Jenkins is a first-generation college student and considers herself a leader who is passionate about change. As a native of New Jersey and a MAP (Management and Policy) student at Rutgers School of Social Work, she is committed to making positive changes in the State’s impoverished communities. Quaniya earned her BA in social work at Rutgers University and is a May 2020 MSW graduate. She is highly respected at the School of Social Work, and a faculty member has noted, “Quaniya exemplifies all that social work is about: passion and commitment to serving and fighting for those who are disadvantaged, marginalized, and oppressed.”

Speaker and Performer, Bryan Terrell Clark Bryan Terrell Clark is an accomplished actor and singer/songwriter who has performed in hugely successful Broadway shows and a wide range of popular television programming for various networks.

After first performing in Hamilton in 2017, Terrell Clark returned to Broadway in December 2019, reprising his role as George Washington. Critically acclaimed, the show has garnered a record-setting 16 Tony award nominations, 11 Tony Award wins, a Pulitzer Prize for drama, and a Grammy. It also has a multicultural cast of talented actors playing America’s founding fathers in a rap musical that is energetic, empowering, and enlightening.

Terrell Clark made his Broadway debut playing the iconic role of Marvin Gaye in Motown: The Musical, which received a 2014 Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. He also starred opposite Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in the acclaimed drama Fences at the Pasadena Playhouse. Additional theater credits include the Mark Taper Forum’s production of Immediate Family directed by Phylicia Rashad, the Alliance Theatre’s Sophisticated Ladies, and His Girl Friday at the Guthrie Theater.

In 2019, Terrell Clark appeared in Ava DuVernay’s highly acclaimed Netflix miniseries When They See Us, and Queen Sugar on OWN. He appears in Cherish the Day on OWN in 2020. Among his other numerous television appearances include CBS’s NCIS: New Orleans, Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, Unforgettable, CSI: NY, and The Unit. He has also had roles on NBC’s The Mysteries of Laura, Fox’s Empire, USA Network’s Royal Pains as well as BET’s The New Edition Story and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. In addition, he appeared in the film Collateral Beauty, which was released in 2016 by Warner Bros.

As a singer, songwriter, and producer, he was co-writer on Mary J. Blige’s “Irreversible” on the album My Life II and has performed with such artists as Maxwell, Brandy, Ne-Yo, Anita Baker, and many others.

Terrell Clark’s production company Artists Park Productions has a creative collaboration with INE Entertainment, a leading independent production company on a series of digital and television projects.

He is the co-founder of inDEFINED, an initiative that inspires and teaches young people to use their voices to erase constrictive labels in our society.

Terrell Clark graduated from the Yale School of Drama and Temple University. He is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

MSW Graduate Christiana Danielle Hicks Christiana Danielle is a singer, songwriter, speaker and Top 10 contestant of NBC’s The Voice season 14. Growing up Christiana engaged in various musical opportunities within her community, including singing in church, hospitals, youth centers and facilities for the elderly. Music was an integral part of her life, but all that came to a sudden halt when a mysterious throat infection resulted in emergency surgery. Christiana was told she may never sing again. Vowing to recover, she miraculously regained her voice and made a declaration to giving back through music. In addition to enjoying singing, Christiana is very passionate about mental health and social work. She is honored to be a Rutgers University 2020 graduate, with a master’s degree in social work as she strives to bring awareness to mental health issues and the power of music to underserved communities.

HISTORY AND MISSION OF THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK

Established in 1954, the School of Social Work at Rutgers has a distinguished record of instruction, research, and public service. Classes were first offered during the Depression to meet the state’s need for social workers.

Today, the School offers undergraduate and graduate professional degree programs, serving the Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick campuses, and is affiliated with more than 800 social service agencies throughout the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. The School offers joint degrees with the Rutgers Law School and with the Princeton Theological Seminary.

The School’s mission is to develop and disseminate knowledge through social work research, education, and training that promotes social and economic justice and strengthens individual, family, and community well-being in this diverse and increasingly global environment of New Jersey and beyond.

Special attention is given to the development of educational programs and community partnerships that respect and enhance the rich diversity of the population of New Jersey. This includes concern about the poor, the oppressed, those vulnerable to discrimination or injustice, and other at-risk groups.

In 2018, the accreditation of the School of Social Work was reaffirmed through the year 2026.

THE ACADEMIC REGALIA The wearing of academic garb dates back to the early days of the oldest universities in the world. In the American Council on Education’s book entitled American Universities and Colleges, it is suggested that “Gowns may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head….”

Throughout the years, European universities have continued to show great diversity in their academic dress. American universities, on the other hand, when they decided to adopt academic dress, immediately established a code of regulations that today is followed by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it possible to distinguish the bachelors, masters, and doctors and, at the same time, recognize the university that has given them the degree.

Gowns: The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The master’s gown, worn open or closed, has oblong sleeves, the front part of which frequently is cut away at the elbow. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It is worn open or closed. Cotton poplin or similar materials is used for the bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and rayon or silk ribbed material is used for the doctor’s degree.

At Rutgers, members of the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, as well as those who hold a doctoral degree from the university, wear the Rutgers gown, which is scarlet with black velvet front panels framed on the outer edge with gold cord braid. The velvet panels are embroidered with a crown and the year 1766 at the neck, signifying the university’s founding as one of the original colonial colleges under King George III of England.

Hoods: The hoods vary in size: 48 inches for the doctor’s degree, 42 inches for the master’s, and 36 inches for the bachelor’s. All hoods are lined in silk in the academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color designating the subject in which the degree was granted.

The color or colors of the lining of the hood for the nine colonial colleges are: scarlet, Rutgers; crimson, Harvard; green-gold-silver, William and Mary; blue, Yale; red-blue, Pennsylvania; orange-black, Princeton; light blue-white, Columbia; brown, Brown; and green-white, Dartmouth.

Caps: Black mortarboards or soft hats are worn for all degrees. The gold tassel signifies a doctoral degree.
