2015 Y e a r b o o k D e d ic a tio n The Class of 2015 has always been a mixture of different types of people and personalities. Even though we are a grade made up of a plethora of different archetypes, we have managed to forge a community inside the walls of Rutgers Prep. This community we have all grown to cherish would not have been created without the guidance and kindness of several faculty members. One individual stands out, however, because of the meaningful relationship he has made with the senior class over the years. Not only do we know that Mr. Desai wants us to succeed, but we believe that we can because of him. He took the time to break down the intimidating fagade of a teacher, and offered us help and advice with almost every problem, whether math related or not. Not only has he helped us through tough math classes, but he has also inspired us to take his lessons from the classroom, and apply them out in the real world. His sense of humor has allowed us to get to know him as a person, not just our teacher, and makes him an approachable role model. The senior class of 2015 will not forget Mr. Desai, and all the skills he has given us for life beyond Prep. He has made an impact on our lives, and as we move on from Rutgers Prep, the lessons he taught us will lead us to become the successful people he knew we could be. Thank you, The Class of 2015

Archana Ahlawat Archana Ahlawat "How did it get so late so soon?" M om and Dad: I cannot thank you enough for raising me with the right values and mindset. I don't know what I would do without your constant support and love. Over the years, I've figured out that parents really ARE (usually) right, but that doesn't mean I'll always agree! ;) Thank you for always giving the best advice and keeping me grounded. Aaditi: Even though you annoy me SO much and won't close my door all the way, I love you for being silly and forcing me to relax and laugh. I will miss you a lot and will constantly be checking up on you to make sure you’re working hard and not driving the family crazy! Dadima, Nanima^cousins, aunts, uncles: You all have taught me to just focus on what is important. Being a part of our crazy family has given me a hard shell and too many life lessons. I nope that you'll revert to making fun of Aaditi when I'm in college! JADE; Getting stuck in a pickle, the water being too cold, the bread and the pineapple being too sticky, misunderstood facial expressions, we've overcome a lot of challenges in our four years. Apologies ror my multiple annoying alarms that I never wake up to and to my overly serious moments. I'm pretty sure I'm in debt to the Archana Jar. Shipping sinking ships since 2011! FOILing! I have loved every moment with you stupid smart people. May JADE live long and prosper. Jyotsna: JI A, I think we can agree. Thank you for waking me up at 1 AM (...or trying to), dealing with my indecisiveness, and always listening to my rants. Who else would understand Archana-speak? Depika; HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You are insanely annoying, and yet you are hilarious and (substitute) God. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face, giving the best hugs, and being that constant ray of sunshine. Eumee: We are so different (except for our love of that candy store) and have too many meaningless debates about the meaning of life and how hipsters and preppies are really just the same people. I've enjoyed enlightening you on who our President is and that Alaska really is not next to Hawaii. Eric: We're not even friends, just "intellectual acquaintances." Most of the time, I wish we agreed more, but who would I have all those intense debates with if we did? Monica: You are one of the sweetest people I've met and know that I'll always have your back. Marc: I love our telecommunication system and also hate that you read me so well. Analyzing HOC, ranting, and disagreeing as much as we agree has been so fun. Mr. Shifman joined the faculty at Rutgers Prep in 1983, an alum who returned to teach math class in the Middle School. You can do the math on that, but he’s been here for a while. His time at Rutgers Prep is best measured not in terms of the years that he’s been here, but in terms of the many things his students have learned. In his time at RPS, Mr. Shifman has taught Middle School math and science. He’s helped coach a winning Upper School girl’s basketball team, and he’s organized Miniweek courses on topics like fishing and electronics. He’s got a knack for understanding the big picture and makes it seem easy to organize a Middle School schedule. He’s been a student advisor and currently has a homeroom in the 7th grade. He understands the number game that is American sports and knows his way around a horse race. His students know that he likes math and enjoys the process of deciphering a problem. He teaches them to do the same. In Middle School math, everyone has a BFF. It’s not the traditional BFF of text messages or notes handed to a friend under the desk. This BFF is no secret; it’s right there on every your page of your math homework notes. Your middle school BFF is Mr. Shifman’s BFF........best form and function. Mr. Shifman’s BFF will unravel confusion and make even the most complicated problem one that can be tackled a piece at a time. The Shifman math class system is elegantly simple: learn an idea, practice that concept, enrich it and give it greater meaning. Repeat and then add on. By the time the year has ended, Mr. Shifman’s math students have mastered a lot. It’s not simply that his students are ready for the night’s homework assignments, though they are. It’s not simply that his students are ready for the next quiz or test, though they are. It’s not simply that his students are ready for the next math class by the end of the school year, though they most certainly are. The Mr. Shifman system ensures that students are given the opportunity to take command of their learning. He shows students what they can accomplish with math and then steps back to admire their achievements.

For his good humor, his well-organized student-centered lessons, and the ways he cares about all the things that make student learning a success, we dedicate the 2014-2015 Middle School to Mr. Matthew Shifman.

Joey its hard to believe the day has come for you to graduate. It seems like yesterday when you entered Rutgers Prep in 2002 for your first day of Mrs. Ochs kindergarten class. She announced to the parents “I now present the class ot 2015!” Well here we are. G raduation day June 7th, 2015 and our baby is taking his next big step on his journey ot life. Joey, just so it’s perfectly dear, you are not the “oops” baby. You were the family s gift and blessing. From the day you were born your older brothers and sister placed you in the center of the sibling stage. They always claimed you were the “favorite” sibling. Maria: The confidante, the defense lawyer and the advisor for the matters of the heart. Michael & Anthony: the tutors, the soccer coaches, the Batta glia boys’ snow team and the tough stuff. Phis certainly made our jobs as parents a bit easier. Ethics, morals, respect, tradi tion, love and la tamiglia have always been the foundation of who you are.You in turn rewarded us by being more m a ture, more understanding ot people’s feelings and such a wonderful warn and loving child. We’re so proud of the young man you’ve become. Don’t ever lose the deep and genuine feelings for others because it’s what defines you as a person. You learned that everything doesn’t always go your way - that life is hard and unfair, but the way you handle adversity is as important - maybe m ore im portant - than the way you handle success. Our advice is to w ork hard, play hard but never lose your center of gravity. Never lose who you are as an individual and know that every one of us -y o u r mother, your father your sister and brothers are so proud of who you turned out to be. As you move into the next phase of your life, don’t forget what got you here. As you move into the future, know that all the new places, new friends and the wonderful opportunities await you. Take full advantage of those opportunities and life will be grand. Challenge yourself, set goals, have high hopes because you can do anything you set your m ind to and your dreams will come true.
