Through the devoted and selfless sharing of her energies, this woman has instilled not only a love for acting but has earned a warm place in all of our hearts. This force of personality has shown not only in her English classes, but in the countless hours of her own free time she has expended. “The lunatic, the lover, and the poet, are of imagination all compact” within this woman, who has with unflagging enthusiasm, given of herself to us. Thank The Class of 1976

Dr. David M. Heinlein, one of the most dedicated and beloved administrators in the History of Rutgers Pre­ paratory School, has announced his intention to retire as Headmaster following the 1975-76 school year. Dr. Heinlein has been with the school since 1943 when he came to Prep as a biology, physics and chemistry teacher, as well as taking on the responsibility that comes with the job of athletic director. In addition to these respon­ sibilities Dr. Heinlein later took on such other tasks as college advisor, head track coach, advisor to the Argo and finally his present position of Headmaster, which was attained in 1954.

Perhaps the most important qualities this man possesses are those of understanding, patience and charisma with the students with whom he comes in contact. This is reflected while going through the Ye Dials of the past and reading the many comments of adoration written by his former pupils and admiring young people.

His hard work and long hours contribute immeasurably to the school as is illustrated by his achievements.

Among them are the moving to Elm Farm Campus, which was completed in 1963, and his help and guidance when Prep broke away from the State University.

Dr. David M. Heinlein has been a great contributor to the Prep community during his 33 years here and his presence will be greatly missed. We, the class of ’76, only regret the fact that the future classes proceeding through our school will never share the experience of having known this wonderful man.

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. ” These words begin one of the most significant documents in the history of mankind, the Declaration of Indepen­ dence. Written by Thomas Jefferson, and adopted by Congress on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence con­ tains concepts fundamental to demo­ cracy: that all men are created equal, that government’s origin is in the con­ sent of those governed, and that govern­ ment’s duty is to protect man’s “in­ alienable rights”, among which are “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happi­ ness.”

The Declaration of Independence re­ sulted from mounting tensions and dis­ agreements between the American colonies and the mother country, Great Britain. The Proclamation of 1763, ban­ ning settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains, was the first in a long line of restrictions that Great Britain began

issuing to her colonies in a belated at­ tempt to maintain control. The colonial resistance to such laws as the Tea Act of 1763 and the Stamp Act of 1764 was swift and sure. Then, on April 19, 1775, at Lexington and Concord, the first shots of the Revolution were fired. The Second Continental Congress met at Philadelphia in May of 1775, appointing George Washington as commander-in­ chief of the Continental forces. Even so, at this point some of the delegates to the Congress considered the revolt and break from Britain as only temporary.

Finally, on May 15, 1776, as resistance continued and a peaceful settlement seemed out of the question, Richard Henry Lee introduced a resolution pro­ posing both independence and an inter­ colonial confederation. Jefferson set about drafting the document, which be­ came “the unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America.”

Today, in the midst of the numerous problems that beset our country in this modern world, Americans are still will­ ing to take bold and courageous steps for what they believe in, as they did 200 years ago.

In 1766, Governor William Franklin issued a charter to establish a college and a related preparatory school for the colonists. The school was established by Dutch and English settlers to provide secular and religious education and leadership. The first classes were held in a small house on the comer of Neilson and Albany Streets in New Brunswick in the Spring of 1768.

The corporate relationship estab­ lished between the school and Queen’s College was unique for its endurance and beneficial to both institutions.

During the several periods when Queen’s College suspended its pro­ grams, the trustees continued operating the preparatory school, which made it easier to re-open the college. On the other hand, when the preparatory school developed financial problems, it was able to depend upon the College’s resources. Neither institution, how­ ever, could disregard the American Revolution, which threatened their survival as educational establishments.

The school represented an assertion of intellectual and religious independence at a time when the colonies were as-

serting their political independence.

The founders, faculty, and students were deeply involved in the revolution­ ary activities erupting in New Bruns­ wick. Around 1775, however, the school temporarily moved to Somerset County to avoid being closed due to their loyalty to the revolutionary cause.

As long as the grammar school sur­ vived, the College maintained its hopes to resume classes. The war eventually ended and the school fell into place with the social, economic and intellec­ tual changes which occurred. The Col­ lege re-opened later and became Rutgers, the State University.

At the turn of the twentieth century, RPS joined the nation’s Progressive Movement by introducing student government, a kindergarten, and many extra-curricular activities to its program. In 1951 the school became fully coeducational.

During the varied economic con­ ditions of the mid-1900’s, there was a great deal of discussion to make the prep school independent of the College.

In 1957, under Dr. David M. Heinlein, Rutgers Preparatory School finally did become independent. Now the school had to prove that it could handle this newly found independence. The Elm Farm was purchased to relocate the school and the first classes were taught in September, 1958.

The house dates back to 1752 and was first built by Evert Van Wickle. After his death, his daughter married Rever­ end Abraham Beach, one of Prep’s founding fathers. Rev. Beach was an Anglican minister who was forced to make a sharp choice during the Re­ volution. After he attempted to hold religious services, he was informed that allegiance to the crown specified in the Anglican ritual was treasonable. He closed his church, only to open it again when the British occupied New Bruns­ wick and close it again when they left.

The colonial mansion was the witness to many revolutionary skirmishes.

Following the death of Beach in 1828, the house and the property eventually passed to his grand-niece, Julia Beach Lawrence, who married her cousin, Thomas Lawrence Wells.

The house remained in the name of Wells until it was purchased by the 14

Board of Trustees of Rutgers Prepara­ tory School. It is fitting, that Rutgers Preparatory School, in moving to a new campus and in being refounded as a truly independent school, has in actuality returned to the old home of one of its founders.

Once the 35-acre campus was obtain­ ed, playing fields were cleared and the carriage house was converted into a gymnasium. In 1958 the ColgatePalmolive Company, in operation with the Trustees, built a 16-room research laboratory on the campus. After Colgate left to occupy its new research center, a study hall, art room, and eight class­ rooms were added to this structure and in 1963 the upper school moved into its new quarters. For the first time in its long history the school became a con­ solidated institution on its own campus.

Since then the school has modified the campus with the additions of the Field House, Annex, and Middle School, as well as adjusting its program to fit the needs of the students. As we move from its protective walls out into the world around us, we hope that RPS will con­ tinue to meet new challenges success­ fully, as we shall try to do.

Eugene Bratek Walking down the halls past rooms 202, 110, 107, and 106, one can gaze inside and behold students engaged in uncov­ ering the mysteries of ancient pyramids, the intricacies of the modern world monetary system, the beauty and drama of the Sistine Ceiling, or the triumphs and frustrations of eighteenth-century American patriots. At Prep, under the dedicated and expert instruction of Dr. Frank Sperduto, Peter Hordijk, Kanak Dutta, Eugene Bratek, and Stephanie Bianchi, students are encouraged to carefully and critically explore all aspects of political, social, cultural, and economic history. Independent research ranging from extensive term papers examining the ruins of Pompeii to oral history essays about World War II supplements classroom work, as well as provides opportunity to venture into areas of particular in­ dividual interest.

Along with Barbara Herzberg, Janice Okulski, and Carol Howell, Allen Pierce has created an Engl ish department that instructs, enlightens and moti­ vates students. The department strives to develop and refine the writing skills of freshmen and sopho­ mores and to continue their challenging reading programs. By junior and senior years, students delve into works by authors ranging from William Shakes­ peare to Dylan Thomas. The department offers jun­ iors and seniors a broad literary program by giving them the opportunity to select one semester Eng­ lish courses. English classes are often difficult and intense, but almost always stimulating and reward­ ing.

M at hem a tics The Math department, headed by Dominic Beronio, offers the traditional high school mathematics, as well as advanced courses like the calculus and computer programming. Mr. Beronio, along with Barry Chamberlain and Elayne Schul­ man, teaches the sequential math courses from algebra through pre-calculus, which encompasses analytic geometry and trigonometry. Mrs. Schulman transcends the basic courses by inspiring her students to use theoretical procedures for practical applications in the calculus. Chris Darrell in­ structs his students in the techniques of computer pro­ gramming; the school’s computer is available to any student with knowledge of its use.

August H. Daviet Robert J. Fenstermaker Basic earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics courses are taught at Prep, as well as phys/chem and advanced biology classes. The Science department, under the guidance of August Daviet, endeavors to increase the students’ awareness of their physical and bio logical environment. Chemistry, traditionally the most-feared course at Prep, is actually a well-rounded study of chemicals, their com­ position, and their properties. This course, taught by Mr. Daviet, includes weekly ad­ ventures in the chemistry lab. Robert Fen­ stermaker supplements his teachings by creating miniature exploding volcanoes and experimenting with slinkies and little cars with bricks. The varied advanced biology courses taught by David Masza have in the past dealt with such subjects as environ­ mental pollution, freshwater ecology, and animal and human physiology.

The teachers of French, German, Spanish, and Latin have their distinct personalities. Mr. Gaggini, the head of the language department, teaches first and second year French as well as Advanced Placement French. The A.P. Program in literature has placed many French students into the second or even the third year of college language.

Mrs. Spratford teaches third year French students and a French Civilization course in which students compare the customs and social institutions of France to those of their own country. The textbook is only a base for their studies.

In studying the French culture they do outside reading as well as experiments in cooking to better understand the French people.

Mrs. Rooda emphasizes both reading and writing for her third and fourth year German students. Reading out­ side material and working with the spoken language allow the students to better perceive the German people and their culture.

Mrs. Roberts’ Spanish students gain command of the written Spanish language in their first two years of study.

After this, students are exposed to Spanish literature in the dramatic, poetic, and short story forms.

Mrs. Bianchi stresses the linguistics of Latin and re­ lated languages in every year of Latin study. Second year students study Latin mythology by Ovid while the Ad­ vanced Latin students are exposed to the love poetry of Catullus.

The Rutgers Prep Art de­ partment is headed by Harrison Burns and Madeline Kaufman, who are fine artists in their own rights. The classes in the young­ er grades emphasize freedom of expression while working in a loose framework. In the drawing and design courses, students learn the basics of composition, in black and white and in color.

In the independent studio art course, a student works on his own on a project approved and supervised by Mr. Burns. Ste­ phanie Bianchi’s Art History class learns by doing; the stu­ dents are taught how to paint in the style of the major periods.

The Art department is very strong, with the concepts well taught and encouragement con­ stantly given to students.

The Rudolfs Memorial Library, with Mrs. Amy VonderPorten as librarian, continues its service to the school as a reading and research center. Mrs. Vonder­ Porten and her student assistants made the many books, magazines, filmstrips, recordings, and slides available to the school. Its abundance of information made the completion of many term papers and assign­ ments possible. Hopefully next year, the library will be moved to its new facility in the Middle School building, which will allow the library to expand its services to the student body. Also, the library con­ tinues its constant campaign for more books and materials, with contributions always welcome.

Typing, filing, account­ ing, feeding, and caretaking are just a few of the respon­ sibilities of the administra­ tion. While the students are learning, this group of peo­ ple is busy with the business and managing aspects of the school.

One member of this group, Ralph Bossman, is kept busy running around the campus as Prep’s business manager. Mr. Bossman, as­ sisted by Mr. O’Meara, Prep’s resident caretaker, use their walkie-talkies to direct buses and other ac­ tivities around the campus.

Another member of this group, Mrs. Kedra, deals daily with finances at Prep as Financial Secretary.

In the Upper School Of­ fice are Mrs. Poczik and Mrs. Berberich, who per­ form their secretarial duties for Dr. Sperduto and Dr. Heinlein every day. While typing, filing, and doing other office work, they also find time to help students with their problems, under their management and care, the office continues to func­ tion smoothly as part of the school.

Rutgers Prep’s vast achievements in the field of athletics can well be witnessed by the performance of the school’s many successful teams. Because of the enthusiasm generated by the Argonauts, a great increase in spectators was evident. Under the direction of Richard S. O’Connell the athletic department has strived to teach these young athletes the importance of sportsmanship as well as the glory that comes with victory. Besides the thirty-two teams parti­ cipating in interscholastic competition, athletics plays an impor­ tant role in Prep activities.

Not only has the school benefitted from this resurgence in ath­ letics, but the students themselves have found profit. The campus this year has been swarming with scouts, and senior athletes find more and more college doors open to them.

School Council Organizes Career Day At R.P.S. On December 3, 1975 roughly forty working people, from fields such as business, govern­ ment, law, science, drama, literature, medicine, art and the media came to Prep to discuss their careers with the students. This was Rut­ gers Prep’s first Career Day, an event organ­ ized by the School Council. All regularly scheduled classes were suspended and replaced by career seminars. In each of these seminars the visiting speaker talked with the students about what his or her career entails, colleges or training schools with good departments in related subjects, and ways in which one could find a job in that field. The overall reaction of the students, teachers and guest speakers was very favorable. The School Council now hopes to establish Career Day as an annual event.

Cur Tcwn Janet Borrus is making bacon and eggs. She wakes up Marilyn Howarth, who complains of always going to school “dressed like a sick turkey.” Soon, Charlie Daniels drops by to deliver the milk, keeping a tight rein on his stubborn horse Bessie.

This was a typical morning from Thorton Wilder’s poignant play, Our Town, produced by a talented group of Prep students in the fall, 1975. The play deals with life in a small New England town at the turn of the century, but its theme that all life is beautiful universally applies.

The cast had a few difficulties, such as the considerable height difference between Chris Combest and Merle Witkin, the young couple in love, or Charlie Daniels’ milk deliveries on a non-existant horse. The total affect, however, was quite humorous. An in­ teresting aspect of the play was the pivotal role of stage manager, shared by the pantomine, Janet Berkowitz, and the narrator, Doug Stahl.

Others in the play included Lisa Gibbs, Winslow Bronson, Phil Kosnett, Lucie Poirier, Danny Green, Walter Placzek, Bruce Baldinger, Dave Giamo, Susan Schwartz, Helen Resnick, and Robin Vinik.

For Lasagne Lovers Only . . .

The festivities of the Fourth Annual Bazaar be­ gan on Friday night, October 17, 1975, with the traditional Faculty dinner. Mr. Anderson hosted the splendid feast of lasagne, tossed salad, bread, drinks, and dessert. The entertainment of the evening was provided by Prep’s answer to the famous mime, Mar­ cel Marceau: Marcel Berkeau, alias Janet Berkowitz, and her partner Debbie Dudas. All in all, the dinner was an enjoyable and delicious preview to the bazaar.

Bazaar Brings Everyone Together; $5,300 Raised What’s the big day of the school year when parents, faculty, alumni, and students get together to play soccer, snack on hot dogs, bargain for used books and win great gifts in raffles? It’s the only day of the year when school spirit is at its peak, and that day is Bazaar Day. Its function is twofold in that funds are raised to aid the school and together­ ness is created by all the partici­ pating school factions.

Chairwomen Mrs. Pat Graber and Mrs. Jo Green headed this year’s committee, which began preparations in January for the big day. A great deal of time was devoted to setting up a silent auction, a raffle, children’s games and a bake sale. The financial theme was funds for the library. A Total of $5,300 was reached; 50% was given to the Upper School library and 50% to the Lower School li­ brary. The committee, however, feels that the day’s unifying atmosphere was far more important than the money made.

The Environmental Committee was initiated some three years ago by a group of industrious sophomores, and has expanded tremendously since that time.

The group now includes a fair representation from all grades in the Upper School. The Committee has con­ cerned itself primarily with making the student body at Prep more aware of environmental problems by providing the students with opportunities to take active part in the maintenance of Prep’s campus through our well-known ‘garbage can painting’ proj­ ect, and various campus clean-ups. An assembly m Futuristics and one on off-shore drilling, as well as the Bios column sponsored by the Argo, have been major projects of the Committee.

The committee owes much of its success to the devotion of its advisors, Mr. David Mazsa and Mrs. Barbara Herzberg, as well as the effort put forth by co-chairpersons Ken Fried, Peter Weprinsky, Rob Weiss, Janet Borrus, and Caron Wolicki. Mr. Mazsa’s scientific background in environmental sciences has aided the Committee invaluably, especially with respect to our recent involvement with a statewide project concerned with restoring acceptable water quality standards to the Raritan River. Mrs. Herz­ berg has little scientific background, but she claims that she has become “an expert on garbage” as a result of her efforts for the Committee, and her quick wit and resourcefulness has been an inspira­ tion to all of us who have worked with her.

The Outing Club A member of the out­ ing club once described it as “Great, gets the kids off the streets and back to nature!” This was Mr. Daviet’s pur­ pose when he led his inexperienced troops down the South Branch of the Raritan River in canoes, and hiking through Round Valley.

Students often found it difficult to hold such paraphernalia as sneakers, hats, paddles, canoes, knapsacks, and themselves. None of these campers devel­ oped any skills in the Great Outdoors and they certainly made fools of themselves when they, for instance, lost their canoes or got caught in trees, but they sure had fun!

Music Club The Music Club, with Mr. Bratek as advisor, consists of a bright group of young people who enjoy and appreciate many types of music.

These young people spend much of their club period doing just that, listening to and enjoying music.

Along with the plain music lovers in this club, there are also a few guitarists and vocalists, who add to the music and enjoyment of this club.

Typing Club Under the direction of Mrs. Biamchi, students were able to learn the basic skills of typing. A concern for making a typing course available to students has been growing for some time. But this year the students decided to make an effort on their own and formed the Typing Club.

Drama Club Drama Club members enjoyed learning about theater as students, actors, and audience. Mr. Pierce led discussions on theater development around the world. In addition, mem­ bers gained experience in plays from Shakespeare to Shaw in group-eval­ uated workshops.

French Cooking Club In its second year, the activities of the French Cooking Club ranged from dipping artichokes to perfecting the art of flipping crepes. The future chefs, led by Madame Spratford, worked faithfully in the kitchen preparing and eating such dishes as Ratatouille and Soupe a l’Oignon. The club offers an introduction to a variety of French foods, both simple, everyday dishes, and the more elaborate ones.

Bicentennial Club The Bicentennial Discussion Club was a newly formed club in honor of the American Bicentennial. The club was instrumental in bringing the Bi­ centennial to the school. The Trenton State College Singers were invited by the club to perform a Bicentennial Music Program for the entire school.

The members of this club were involved in the production of a film about Prep, and they also visited historic sites in Franklin.

Photography Club These aspiring young photographers roam the campus with their cameras learning the techniques of photography. They have also been exposed to the arts of developing and printing. Many of them have come to the aid of the various publications.

Golf Club This year’s Golf Club sponsored two major events, the first of which was the Tara Greens Open.

The competition was won

by President Russell Best and Dan Danzig. A trophy was awarded to these two golfers. The second event was a putting tournament, that lasted the remainder of the year. In all, the Golf Club had a very pros perous season.

The Model Railroad Club, a newly organized club, had a small but dedi­ cated membership. Being a new club, it was plagued with the losing and gaining of members, financial problems, and the task of finding a meeting place. The members, with Mr. Beronio as advisor, managed to solve their problems and hold the club together. Mr. Beronio’s and the members’ donations enabled them to design and build a model rail­ road in the fieldhouse. The members have plans to continue their railroading in the future.

Chess Club The Chess Club is a club com­ posed of Prep students who like to play chess, and who spend most of their meetings doing just that, playing chess. The meetings are spent in silence and concentration, as the members skillfully play chess. During the year the club organized a tournament, in which the members played each other and eventually their advisor.

Varsity “R ” Club The Varsity “R” Club, as the name suggests, is a club for boys who have earned Varsity letters in a respective sport. The club’s function is to promote interest and enthusiasm in Rutgers Prep sports.

Periodically, the club organizes a trip to a sporting event. This fall, they saw a Mets’ baseball game. More trips are in the planning for the spring.

On Prize Day, the club, along with its advisor, Mr. Chamberlain, awards the Varsity Award to that senior who best exemplifies the qualities of an athlete.

Ping Pong Club The Ping Pong Club was a club consisting ex­ clusively of seniors. The club disrupted the lunch­ room every meeting to set up their tables and play ping pong. The members and their advisor, Mr. Daviet, played in their own tournaments through­ out the year. Since all of these fantastic players won’t be returning, Mr. Daviet is left to coach an entirely new group of ping pong players next year.

Lacrosse Club The Lacrosse Club was formed this year to promote the sport at Prep. Be­ sides members of the team, the club had a fair representation from the rest of the school. The basics of the game were covered for newcomers, as well as some detail into play. Various speakers came, once the season had started, to discuss the sport. All in all it was a successful year for the new club.

The school’s newspaper, The Argo, is one of the most vital means of communication among Prep stu­ dents, faculty, administration, par­ ents, and alumni. Ten editions of The Argo are published every year, and for the past several years the paper has received a First Place award at the Columbia Scholastic Press Contest. This year’s editor-inchief, Elizabeth Pickar, has worked with page editors Merle Witkin, leva Miesnieks, Janet Berkowitz, and Rob Weiss to print informative news and editorials. As faculty advisor, Eugene Bratek offers suggestions and helps the editors develop guidelines for the paper. Many students become involved in preparing the newspaper by writing articles, taking photo­ graphs, typing, and proof-reading.

The students not only develop journalistic and literary techniques on The Argo, but also enjoy the excitement and achievement of producing a news­ paper.

ARGOMAG

Argomag, the school’s literary art magazine, gives the students a chance to contribute creative works of art and literation to a publication. Poems, stories, paintings, sketches, and photographs are contributed to Argomag and are printed in a numerous variety of styles and techniques. Editor-in-chief Susan Chimene has worked closely with editors Janet Segal, Caron Wolicki, Julie Ratych, Steve Kerekes, and Cindy Berkowitz in order to obtain new ideas and themes.

Argomag’s advisor, Ron Stanley, helps the staff by offering his time and suggestions to the preparation of the magazine. The students learn how to put to­ gether a special kind of publication with a great deal of effort and devotion.

YE DIAL The school’s yearbook, Ye Dial has tried to present the idea that the year­ book is no longer just a picture al­ bum. More emphasis has been placed on the daily activities and student life at Prep. Co-Editors-in-chief, Pam Csik and Vicky Banko have tried to create a publication which is informative as well as picturesque. They have worked with editors Glenn Israel, Billy Hyman, and Ricky Zankel to add creativity by utilizing some of the various techni­ ques of yearbook journalism. Ye Dial ’76 will hopefully only be the begin­ ning of a new type of yearbook, in which the staff learns to take advan­ tage of the many techniques available.

The school spirit of togetherness was clearly seen as the yearbook staff rapidly increased in the last few months when the help was most needed. Hopefully this enthusiasm will continue and help to bring new ideas to each new book.

Model The Model United Nations Club, with a membership of ten stu­ dents and with Mrs. Dutta as advisor, is ded­ icated to achieving a better understanding of world problems. Using debate as its main for­ um, the members learn the parliamentary pro­ cedures and foreign af­ fairs, which will enable them to participate in the major Model U.N. at Georgetown Univer­ sity in Washington, D.C. The club’s goals are not only educational but also enjoyable.

Prom Committee Works Hard For June 11 Event This year’s prom commit­ tee, headed by juniors Andy Golden and Amy Krivitsky worked hard to prepare for this year’s Junior-Senior Prom. Combining the guid­ ance of Mr. Chamberlain as advisor and the individual work of the committee mem­ bers the date was finally set and the place was chosen.

The event will take place on June 11 at the elegant Shadowbrook, in Shrewsberry.

The Library Media Club had one of its most successful years in recent history. This year the club completed its first year with the photocopying machine.

Because the machine broke even, it will be kept in the li­ brary. The club has also de­ signed a computer library circu­ lation which enables the over­ due notices to be sent out more efficiently. At present, the club is working with the School Council to purchase student id­ entification cards to be used for book check-out. Members of the club have worked on various possible layouts of the furni­ ture for the new library. They look forward to the library being moved this year.

Foreign Exchange Club Reaches Out To Meet Foreign Students Over the years the Foreign Exchange Club has shared great experiences with students from countries all over the world. Trips have been taken to New York City to participate in seminars, guided tours, and talk discus­ sions at the American Field Service, near the United Nations. Prep has opened its doors to foreign students from the AFC and the Open Door Program for many years. Tragically, the AFC did not have enough money to continue the seminars this year. However, the Foreign Exchange Club hopes they will be resumed next year, as the seminars were a good way to meet kids from a variety of places.

Open House Informs Public; Enrollment Increases Mid- Year On several occasions this year Rutgers Prep opened its doors to prospective students and parents for an “everything you ever wanted to know about Prep, but were afraid to ask,” day. The Open House Pro­ gram was designed to inform the public about Prep and, of course, to encourage enrollment. The faculty and students were pleased with the program. They enjoyed guiding prospective Prepsters around and talking to them about Prep life. Attendance on these days was high and it brought in the largest number of students ever having entered mid-year.

On such a day, one could tour the campus with a student, view a well-done slide presentation and eat to his heart’s content. Perhaps the most favorable aspect of the Open House is that a prospective student could learn about Prep from currently en­ rolled students.

Students’Primary Responsibility Lies In Academics

Rutgers Prep prides itself on its reputation of high quality education; it is the faculty who can take most of the credit for the school’s success. They are always available when a student needs extra help or just a little advice. In the class­ room, students are taught with a college preparatory objective. This attitude is especially apparent during exam time; mid-year and final exams are extremely im­ portant since they constitute one third of the entire sem­ ester grade. Although many faculty advise extra-curricu­ lar activities as well, they em­ phasize that academics are a student’s first responsibility.

Seniors And Advisors Work Together On College Admissions

Representatives of several colleges came to Prep in the fall for the annual College Night, a time when students and parents learn about prospective colleges.

College Preparation is a recent addition to the process by which a senior becomes aware of his responsibilities and fills his commit­ ments to ultimately get into college. The ma­ jority of seniors, supervised by Mrs. Spratford, Mr. Daviet, and Mr. Beronio, meets weekly for one hour to gather information concerning college admissions pertinent to that time of year. Whether it be to help students meet S.A.T., Achievement, and College Application deadlines, to provide ac­ cess to college guides and materials, or to simply better acquaint the students with their guidance counselors and vice-versa, all have found this practical approach to the college entrance process very beneficial.

The School Council serves to give Prep stu­ dents a voice in school affairs and to coordinate intellectual and social activities the students would enjoy. The Council strives to operate as a democratic organization. Its membership includes both students and teachers, elected by their peers, and a representative of the ad­ ministration. Like our national government, the Council functions according to guidelines laid down in its constitution.

During the past year, Council Projects in­ cluded an all-school trip to Great Adventure, dances, Career Day and a Forum Program by which students, faculty and parents meet regularly to discuss Prep’s problems and prog­ ress. In addition to carrying out its own activi­ ties the School Council helps to finance several of Prep’s publications and service groups.

A small group of the best math students at Prep comprised this year’s Math Team. Com­ peting against twenty-seven other schools, mostly public, in Middlesex and Somerset counties, the team had reasonable success.

There was a small number of students capable of attending the meets because of sports and other activities. However, Mr. Beronio has said that these athletes seem to do better at the meets than others because of their experi­ ence under pressure.

Under Coach Sperduto’s final season as head coach of Rutgers Prep Soccer Team, a 9-6-2 slate was achieved. After getting off to a fine start, nagging injuries plagued the team game after game. Many inexperi­ enced players played key roles in this season’s success. Undoubtedly they will be heavily counted on next year.

The explosive offensive line was led by senior co-captain, All-County, All-State Rob Weiss. Rob tallied for 31 goals over his three year career. Senior Vic Schwartz, junior Roman Bukachevsky, and sophomores John O’Connell and Dave Yurcisin combined for 18 goals.

Senior All-Stater Paul Daviet along with seniors Howard Maltz and Paul Grippo did a remarkable job holding down the defense, giving goalie Joel Baker fine support. Paul Daviet also scored a goal against a powerful Montgomery team to hlep Prep to victory.

The halfbacks were led by senior co-captain Joe Yurcisin, with tremendous help from juniors Ed James, and Julian Schoicket and sophomore Art Wilmot. They played their finest game against a State Champion Morristown-Beard School which resulted in a 5-0 Prep victory. With 12 letterman returning, Prep’s future is very bright.

As in five out of the past six years this year’s basketball squad recorded 20 victories. The final record for the squad was 20 wins and only 4 losses.

The team was led by Todd Milligan and Nate Mullins, Prep’s two 6’7” co-captains. Tony Scialabba held the other forward spot of what Coach O’Connell said was Prep’s best front line ever. These three “big men” did the bulk of the scoring, averaging 60 of Prep’s 70 points per game. Starting at the guard positions were Johnny O’Connell and Mike Ballai, with Peter Weprinsky filling in regularly. Rounding out the rest of the squad were Ken Fried, Robert Campbell, Russell Best, John Kontos, and Doug Braun.

Besides getting increasingly larger crowds at each game, the Prep Field House was filled with an added dimension, college scouts. Nate and Todd were two of the top college prospects in the state.

Next year’s team will miss the experience of the seven graduating sen­ iors, but Coach O’Connell still has bright prospects for the future.

This year’s JayVee Soccer Team produced a very respectable 5-6-2 record. Since the team was composed mainly of freshmen this record looks even better considering the opposing teams were usually much older. The bulk of the offense was controlled

by Freshmen Jack Guarino, Doug Braun, and Sophomore Jeff Rutter.

John Grazul, Pete Lisiecki and Peter Clarke made up the defense. With openings on the varsity team next year, these players stand a chance to make the team.

This year’s JayVee Basketball Team, under the guidance of Coach Tony DiPalo, finished with a 3-19 record. Even though the record was not very impressive the squad always gave 100% and were in many close ball games. One of the problems was the inexperience, with only two play­ ers playing organized basketball be­ fore the season. The starters for Coach DiPalo’s squad were Doug Braun and Jay Greenfield, with the front line consisting of Rob Schneier, Jack Guarino and Peter Lisiecki.

This year’s Cross Country team, coached by Robert Fenstermaker, had a fantastic season. The team set many records, the most important being the most wins in a season (8), best finish ever in the state meet (3rd), the highest winning percentage, and the only Prep cross country team to go undefeated on their home course.

As in the past two years the team was led by junior Tony Scialabba and senior captain Peter Weprinsky. Out of thirteen meets, Tony came in first place seven times and Peter came in second six times. Senior Joe Faraci and sophomore Kevin Kane were the team’s third and fourth runners, with seniors Eric Johnson and Charlie Daniel rounding out the team.

The team had many impressive victories, but by far the most exciting were the two victories over Princeton Day School and Dunellen High School.

P.D.S. won the Prep school state meet the previous year, but five out of six argonauts ran their best time ever as Rutgers squeezed out a victory 28-29. In the last dual meet of the year the team ran against Dunellen; every Prep run­ ner beat a Dunellen runner they had previously lost to, Tony set a new school record, and Prep won its eighth meet of the season.

With three out of the top four runners coming back next year the squad will be expecting to keep a winning tradition for Rutgers Prep cross country.

Due to injuries and lack of interest for cross country, the team, especially in pre-season, was very doubtful if they would be able to compete with a full team. But through enthusiasm, dedication, hard work, and great coaching, everybody was in top shape for the team’s first meet, a 21-34 victory over Neumann Prep. The girls were not so lucky. Because of their lack of numbers, they could not compete with a full schedule. They did have three meets and came away with two victories. The team was led by senior Debbie Dudas, Juliana Ratych and Vicky Neiner, with Shannon Tobin, Cindy Berkowitz and Alice Sikorski helping out whenever needed.

The Girls’ Tennis Team had a very success­ ful season. While compiling a very fine team record of 14 wins and only 3 losses, many of the girls also enjoyed fine individual seasons.

The team was coached by Barry Chamberlain in what was his first experience coaching a fe­ male team.

This was also the first year the girls had their season in the fall since it was moved from the spring. Without having to share the courts with the boys’ team, the girls were able to prac­ tice every day. With a great deal of new talent coming up, the future looks very bright.

Wrestling Despite facing tougher competition than in previous years and not having a full team due to injuries, this year’s Varsity Wrestling team, coached by Buddy Frezza, managed to have a respectable record of 12 wins and 5 losses and a fourth place in the state tournament which was held at Rutgers Prep.

The schedule included two quadrangular meets and a Christmas tourna­ ment that included a few high caliber teams. Dave Yurcisin was Prep’s only state champion this year. Wrestling in the 101 lb. weight class, he finished the season with 25 wins and 0 losses. Two time state champion and co­ captain Paul Grippo took a third place in the states at 129 lbs. while Tony Jones placed fourth at 148 lbs. Co-captain Joe Yurcisin, wrestling well above his weight in the 188 lb. class, had many wins against only a few losses as well as Ed Pahler at 158 lbs., Ed James at 170 lbs., Tom Lee at 108 lbs., and Alex Wiley at 115 lbs.

This season was a pretty good one and it will be hard for next year’s team to fill in the places vacated by the graduating seniors. The future looks bright, however, as the team is relatively young and the junior wrestlers are moving up.

This year, Coach Fenstermaker’s swimming team consisted of enthusiastic young swimmers who made constant headway with each meet and practice session. The swimmers’ unfailing zeal was reflected in the number of first, sec­ ond, and third places they took.

The team was led by seniors Tom Flynn, Neil Shore, Gary Brown, and captain Charlie Daniel.

Outstanding performances were turned in by juniors Robert Murray and Rick Zankel, and sophomores Jeff Rutter and Jon Strassberg.

All are hot prospects for next year.

This year’s volleyball team had one of the best seasons ever in Prep’s volleyball history. Led by senior captain leva Miesnieks, the team went on to defeat many tough opponents, ending their season with a 9-4 record. The team had a very strong starting line-up, which consisted of leva, seniors Vicky Banko and Pam Csik, and MaryAnn Hatala, Vicky Neiner, and Kathi Klein. The team made steady progress throughout the season, as the girls worked at refining their skills and im­ proving their teamwork.

The experience of the three graduating seniors will be missed next year; however, with many underclassmen and eighth grade players expressing an interest in the game of volleyball, Coach Tina Leone feels the team’s future will be bright.

Although this year’s Girls’ Basketball team did not achieve a winning record, the individual team members gained a full season of experience and knowledge in playing competitive basketball. Since the team is almost entirely composed of underclassmen, this experience will prove successful in the future.

The major strength of the team was shared by co­ captains Debbie Dudas, the only senior on the team, and Mary Valenti, a junior. Rounding out the starting line­ up were Alice Sikorsky, who also added much to scoring, MaryAnn Hatala and Nancy Page. Other team mem­ bers who added much to the team’s main structure were Vicky Neiner, Shannon Tobin, and Gail Kontos.

With all of the players returning next year, with the exception of Debbie, whose leadership will be missed, Coach Tina Leone looks forward to a winning future.

This year was the first year of competi­ tive gymnastics at Prep. Although there were only six meets scheduled, the girls proved themselves to be dedicated and de­ termined. The team was led by freshman Kathi Klein and was comprised of eighth graders Dana Stahl, Cheryl Relies, Deb­ bie Sirkin and seven­ th grader Tara O’Connell.

Despite the excel­ lent coaching on the part of Lisa Spencer, the girls won only two of the six meets, but lost one by only .4 points. However, this was due to the inexperience of the young team and the tough competition.

Cheerleadins

Led by Captain Joyce Lafharis and Co­ captain Nancy Page, the 1975-76 cheer­ leading season saw the advent of some unique cheers with contemporary wording and style that swept spectators into a spiritous state. Fund raising activities per­ formed by Varsity, JayVees, and Junior cheerleaders bought some much-needed varsity uniforms of which the girls are very proud. Pictured below are Rutgers Prep’s own “rah-rahs”, as Coach Mrs. Coppolino fondly calls them.

The Varsity Tennis team, coached by Mr. Chamberlain, was one of the best teams in recent years. Senior-captains Neal Shore, Dave Cohen, and Pete Weprinsky held the singles positions. The first doubles team consisted of Jim Faczak and Phil Brenner. Second doubles were Ken Fried and Glenn Cohen. Andy Barnett and Ron Fischer were the first alternates.

The Jay Vee Tennis team had a fine season. Although the team lost its first and second singles men, Coach Chamberlain was able to come up with a productive lineup. This team was made up of hold­ overs from last year’s team and also new men who had a great deal of experience. One of the main reasons for the teams success was the large turnout for the Varsity team. Not everyone can make the Varsity team, so many of the Jay Vee players were playing at the varsity level.

The years Varsity Baseball team, coached by Buddy Frezza has the potential for a very successful season.

Last years entire starting infield has returned, bringing with them experience and ability. The experience and ability emerged through the pitching of Billy Hyman and Joel Baker, along with the hitting of Howard Maltz, Paul Daviet, Joe Yurcisin, Robert Campbell, and Rob Schneier. The combination of good pitching and hitting produced victories for the team. Although several strong senior players will be lost; the ability of the younger players will make successful seasons in the future possible.

The Jay Vee Baseball team went through a rebuilding year, because most of last year’s players had stepped up to the varsity level. This left many positions open and they were consequently filled by fresh­ men, making the team young and inexperienced. The spirit on the team was excellent as the players realized that, while they were not winning as hoped, they were becoming better ball players.

Jack Guarino, who did most of the pitching, shows promise as a future first-rate varsity pitcher. The offense was given a great lift by outfielder Rich Haver, first baseman John Grazul, and catcher Mark Sherman. Coach Szarek, a former varsity pitcher, stressed conditioning and fundamentals as the key to win­ ning team.

From the very start, this year’s varsity lacrosse team promised an exceptional season. Led by enthusiastic Coach Willard and captains Paul Grippo, Victor Schwartz, and Tony Jones, the team showed fine basic skills and an ever-increasing amount of teamwork.

Highlights of the season included a spring vacation trip to Maryland for the purpose of seeing and playing against teams not ordinarily included on the schedule. Also adding to the excitement of the year were early season wins over some of the team’s tougher opponents.

The future appears bright for the team. Although the loss of four seniors to graduation will be sorely felt the return of numerous lettermen, many with three or more years experience, guarantees strong teams in years to come.

The golfers, coached by Mr. Anderson, enjoyed their finest season ever. The team consisted of senior-captain Russell Best, seniors Charlie Daniels, and Winslow Bronson, junior Eric Roseff, and sophomores Dan Danzig and Alex Wiley.

Best and Danzig were the heart of the team. Both enjoyed fine seasons. Com­ bined they had a record of 12-2-2. Russell shot in the 30’s and Dan played steadily in the low and mid 40’s.

The most valuable part of the team was Coach Anderson. He devoted nearly all of his spare time and much of his own money to the team. The main problem was that golfers just did not turnout, but Coach Anderson did all that was possible to put together the winning combination.

With almost everyone back from last year’s team, the softball team had an excellent season, helped along by fine coaching. One of the highlights of the season was an impressive extra-innings upset win over Vail Deane. Since there were no seniors on the team, the girls are looking forward to another successful season next year.
