The Rutgers Prep Art department is headed by Harrison Burns and Madeline Kaufman, who are fine artists in their own rights. The classes in the younger grades emphasize freedom of expression while working in a loose framework. In the drawing and design courses, students learn the basics of composition, in black and white and in color. In the independent studio art course, a student works on his own on a project approved and supervised by Mr. Burns.
