VARSITY SOCCER

Under the seasoned coaching of Dr. Sperduto, co­ captains Jasionowski and Paulus led the varsity soccer team to win its first five games of the season.

The team struggled with many injuries, lost a num­ ber of close games but managed to complete a good 9 win — 7 loss record only to drop the first round game of the State Tournament to Montclair Aca­ demy.

Among the regulars who contributed to the sea­ son's victories were seniors: Joe Smutko, Kevin O’Connell, George Grabowich, Mike Borrus, Jay Grossman, and Mike Matyas. Co-captain Jim Jasi­ onowski broke most of the school's scoring records, while Paulus proved a strong defensive player.

Since the team got strong support from a number of junior and sophomore teammates, it looks like a good season next fall.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Cross Country team, under the direction of Coach Fenstermaker, en­ joyed its best season in Prep history this year with a 7 win — 7 loss record.

Highlights of the season included an impressive victory over Wardlaw, a first in the team’s history, Captain Jack Kamin was the star of the squad, breaking all existing school records.

Senior Rich Cooke ran some excellent meets during his first year out for the team. Jack and Rich ended their sea­ son with a 4th and 7th place finish in the state meet.

Other important runners contrib­ uting to a fine season were seniors Mike Venutolo, Frank Caglianone, and Bob Rutter, sophomores Doug Van Pelt and Don Eng, and eighthgrader Tony Scialabba.

VARSITY BASKETBALL Led by senior Paul Smith, the Varsity Basketball Team moved on to establish yet another year of success in Coach O'Connell's 20-1 year winning record. The varsity kept up its tradition with an amazing 22 win and 5 loss season. Smith, who be­ came the third highest point-getter in New Jersey history, scored close to 3,000 points, helping to compile a perfect 8-0 win record in the Northern Jersey Independent School league, taking the title for the third consecutive year.

Tom Raba and Jeff Miklos joined Paul on the front line, while Kevin O'Connell and Todd Cohen stood firm in the backcourt. When the starters had done their job, Coach O’Connell could always turn to the rest of the team for exciting minutes of play.

As ten seniors leave the team this year, next year's group will be under pressure to keep up with this record.

Under the direction of first-year coach Charlie Kline, the J.V. basketball team enjoyed its most successful season in Prep history. Led by junior captain and high scorer Mitch Reisberg, the J.V.’s compiled a respectable 17-6 win-loss record and became New Jersey Independent School Champs as they went undefeated in league play. Twice they beat rivals Wardlaw and Montclair. Other highlights of the season were two victories over Montgomery High School, beating them by three and two points, respectively.

With guards Bob Vosbrink, and Rory O’Connell and forwards John Smutko and Walter Deutch all averaging in double figures, the J.V. team looks like the backbone of the varsity next year.

7th & 8th GRADE BASKETBALL The 7th and 8th grade team, with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses, was the most successful in re­ cent years. Coach Iacono, who leads all 7th and 8th grade sports, made the year a memorable one. Led by eighth-graders Tony Shillaba, John O’Connell, and Cory Schiffman, the group established Prep’s dominance among private school teams.

GIRLS SPORTS

In existence for only three years, the Rutgers Prep Girls’ Basketball Team has come a long way from its first season’s record. This year Captain “Babe” Rubin led the team with her extraordinary offensive skills to come out with a 7 win — 5 loss record. Center Margie Flynn and forward Jeanne Sikorski. the co-captain, also contributed great effort toward making the season a victorious one.

Coach Leone gets the credit for her efforts to bring the team into their first winning season.

The newly established Girls’ Volleyball Team showed great potential. The dedication of the girls and the refinement of their volleyball skills are

sure to lead to a successful season next year.

The Girls’ Athletic Department was busy this spring with the addition of the Girls’ Tennis Team to the already established Girls’ Softball Team.

To further stimulate interest and participation in girls’ sports, the Girls’ Athletic Association was created. The organization gives credit to partici­ pants by awarding a certain number of points for each activity which are tallied at the end of the year for the presentation of awards. Under the leadership of president Barbara Rubin, the G.A.A. has had a successful start.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team, under the direction of coach Bud Frezza, had a highly competitive season of three wins and nine losses. Four of the losses fell within ten points, and those meets could well have gone either way.

The team was lead by seniors Howard Hirsch and Marc Lipp, and underclassman Paul Grippo who took third place in the State Wrestling Meet, the first place Prep won at these meets since the private school groups were combined.

With only two seniors leaving the team, it looks as though it will be an even better year in '74.

Coach Fenstermaker had to guide his team through various difficulties this year. The YMCA pool, which the team usually uses, be­ came hazardous, so arrangements were made for practice at the Camp Kilmer pool. This caused problems in transportation and sched­ uling, but the team tread on.

Mike Matyas, Mike Strasberg, Bob Nashed, and Mike Nebel comprised the backbone of the squad, but Nebel had to leave competition in the middle of the season because of serious illness. Facing the challenge of these odds against them, the team swam a 2 win — 9 loss season.

With a good group of seniors graduating, the coach will be looking to this year’s under­ classmen to carry the team next year.

Grade I — Mrs. Hassert W e played every day with Bun-Bun and many times Muffy visited us.

Dr. Tan helped us listen to our hearts. Dr. Savage taught us how to keep our teeth healthy. We made Indian bread with Mrs. Ghosh, Christmas wreaths with Mrs. Harper, potato pancakes and applesauce with Mrs. Zankel.

Sam, won the beauty contest for scarecrows.

Grade II — Mrs. Howarth I am a little mouse in room 208. At lunch, I see some children munch. When they have cheese, I wish they could hear me say, "Please?” I study times, plus, and minus with the children. The book­ worms make me excited. They are pretty, too. I like the clocks, ther­ mometers and all kinds of flags on the wall. I get excited when the teacher says, "Open your science books, please.”

I like the play the children are planning. I f I were not a mouse maybe I could be in the play too.

It looks like fun, but not when the noise begins!

Every week we have teams, All of us have improved our cursive writing.

This year we went to the Nutcracker Suite and we saw Mary Poppins.

We have had fun with all our teachers.

Social Studies and Science are among our favorites.

Gymnastics class has been great!

Grade III — Mrs. Haney The Ghost in Room 207 Our room is about 170 years old. I f a ghost were in the fireplace all those years, he could tell many stories about our room.

The ghost could have been an Indian boy who lived on the land before the house was built.

He might have known of a secret passageway for hiding slaves during the Civil War. The ghost must have seen a lot of boats go by on the canal. After the rest of the house was add­ ed in 1880, this may have been a room for little children. Now that it’s a school room, he must be a very smart ghost.
