Rutgers Prep Students Commended For D&R Canal Towpath Cleanup Over the summer, RPS senior Christian Wright, with some help from the Franklin Township Environmental Commission, was able to organize a cleanup event spanning a two mile section of the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath adjacent to the Rutgers Prep campus.

Ms. Rasnitsyn Published for Graduate Research in Teaching Practices for Multilingual Learners RPS Middle School math teacher Shelly Rasnitsyn was recently published in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) newsletter, alongside her peers at The College of New Jersey. Their article entitled “Observing and Exploring Accessibility and Equitability af Practices an ahe Teaching and Assessment of Multilingual Learners” detailed the findings of the research they conducted in order to explore teaching and assessment practices for identifying, evaluating, and supporting Multilingual Learners with or without disabilities.

Rutgers Prep Girls Soccer Wins South, Non-Public B Title in Offensive Shootout Soon after claiming the program’s first Prep B championship since 2007, the Rutgers Prep girls soccer team capped off its landmark season by winning the NJSIAA Non-Public B, South championship with a 5-4 win over Bishop Eustace.

Dr. Loy Featured in Cover Story of OESIS Network Magazine Dr. Loy was recently featured in the cover story of OESIS Network magazine, the monthly publication of the OESIS Network, a faculty-focused nationwide innovation network of 600+ schools and thousands of teachers which seeks to"catalyze change in the learning models of schools with an emphasis on the innovative practices in pedagogy, curriculum development, 21st-century assessment and school culture change."

The article, entitled "A New Breed of Trust-Focused Leaders Building Capacity for the Future," is a profile of Dr. Loy, including an interview about his early career, as well as his leadership approach to supporting DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives at Rutgers Prep.

Who’s New at Rutgers Prep Get to know the new faces at Rutgers Prep

Kimberly Castellano, Upper School Spanish Teacher RPS: What’s your proudest moment as a teacher?

Kimberly Castellano: When the lightbulb goes on and they just get it! I love when previous students come back to me and tell me how much they enjoyed my class.

RPS: Who is your hero?

KC: Definitely my parents. From my dad, I learned the importance of education and working hard. I admire my mom for her selflessness.

RPS: What is your favorite song?

KC: Nocturne in C Minor Op. 48 No. 1 by Fédéric Chopin. When I listen to this song, it speaks to my soul. It reminds me that life can be bittersweet.

RPS: What is your favorite piece of art or architecture and why?

KC: Las Dos Fridas by Frida Kahlo. I think that there can be two sides to any person and I can feel Frida’s pain and joy in that painting.

Cary Griffin, Upper School English Teacher RPS: What’s your teaching philosophy?

Cary Griffin: My entire philosophy of teaching rests upon the idea or belief that a student is much more capable than we know, and, if we just believe in them and give them the tools they need to learn, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

RPS: What words of wisdom would you pass to your childhood self?

CG: Work hard, even if you don’t know whether your labor will be prosperous, because there is fruit on the other end of every work.

RPS: What inspires you?

CG: Knowing that every one of my actions has a profound effect on students, it makes me want to be better in every way.

RPS: Who was your favorite teacher and what did you learn from them?

CG: I love every teacher that I’ve ever had, because they’ve all shown me the parameters of teaching; however, I think Adele Bruni-Ashley at Teachers College was probably my favorite, because she’s shown me how a “caring and safe classroom” looks, and how it can be shaped.

RPS: What do you want to be when you grow up?

CG: I want to be a better teacher and a better person. I strive continuously for these two things.

Nicole Liu, Upper School Mandarin Teacher RPS: What words of wisdom would you pass to your childhood self?

Nicole Liu: Do not compare yourself to others. There is only one you and you are special and unique.

RPS: What is your favorite song?

NL: “Yesterday Once More.” It reminds me of my middle school days when I first started learning English as my second language.

RPS: What is your favorite city and why?

NL: Kyoto, Japan. It’s a slow city, very beautiful, elegant, and it gives me peace and time to search for myself.

RPS: What was your favorite meal as a child? What is your favorite meal now?

NL: Any homemade food from my dad.

Melissa Mack, Upper School Math Teacher RPS: What’s your teaching philosophy?

Melissa Mack: Learning should be equally as challenging as it is enjoyable. One without the other is not a sustainable model.

RPS: Who is your hero?

MM: My mother is my hero. She is a mother of eight children who managed to go back to school after surviving having cancer while pregnant with her eighth child and graduate with a 4.0 GPA as Valedictorian.

RPS: What hidden talent do you have that others do not know about?

MM: I am a professional dancer and a pretty good singer.

RPS: What inspires you?

MM: I am inspired by revolutionaries and social activists throughout history.

RPS: What’s your go to karaoke song?

MM: I hate karaoke but if I had to do it, I would sing “Bills, Bills, Bills” by Destiny’s Child.

Liz Mulvey ’13, Physical Education and Health and Wellness Teacher RPS: What were you like in high school?

Liz Mulvey: Athletic and creative - you would either find me playing soccer, basketball or lacrosse depending on the season or in the art studio.

RPS: What’s the silliest thing you are passionate about?

LM: Grey’s Anatomy and Peloton classes!

RPS: What advice would you give your childhood self?

LM: Things happen and that’s okay! Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Anna Paterson, Upper School Dance Teacher RPS: What’s your teaching philosophy?

Anna Paterson: I believe in a holistic approach to teaching dance, that feeds the mind, body, and soul and that the art form should be accessible to all. My students are not only learning to dance but how to move through the world with confidence in themselves and in their leadership skills.

My students work together to collaborate on projects, forming an important sense of community within the dance classroom.

RPS: What words of wisdom would you pass to your childhood self?

AP: Stop taking life so seriously and eat more chocolate!

RPS: What inspires you?

AP: The power of community.

RPS: Who was your favorite teacher and what did you learn from them?

AP: My favorite teacher was Marisa Joshi, my high school dance teacher, who taught me how to be confident in myself.

RPS: What’s your proudest moment as a teacher?

AP: Seeing my students create and perform their own dance works.

Shelly Rasnitsyn, Middle School Math Teacher RPS: Who is your hero (and why)?

Shelly Rasnitysn: My parents are my heroes. They came to the US with nothing and have really achieved the American dream. They’re the most hard-working people I have ever met.

RPS: What’s the silliest thing you are passionate about?

SR: Ice cream... I’m obsessed with ice cream and will travel around looking for my favorite shop. Every time I’m in a new place, the first thing I look up are the different ice cream shops around.

RPS: What’s your proudest moment as a teacher?

SR: I love seeing students grow. It makes me so happy that they’re learning. When a student has a hard time understanding a topic and then gets it, it is such a great feeling.

RPS: What is your favorite piece of art or architecture and why?

SR: I’ve traveled to 36 countries and European churches always blow me away. I love walking around and visiting all the different types of churches to look at the art inside and the architecture outside.

Ajanet Rountree, Learning Specialist RPS: What’s your proudest moment as a teacher?

Ajanet Rountree: My proudest moment as a teacher occurred when a student had been struggling with his letter sounds. He asked me if we could continue to do them in a way that accommodated his learning style but differed from the other students: “Ms. Ajanet, can we keep doing this because I am good at it.” It was a decisive moment that reinforced everyone, including me, does not fit into predesigned boxes.

RPS: What’s the silliest thing you are passionate about?

AR: Crayons and jellybeans.

RPS: How would your best friend describe you?

AR: A detail-oriented, introverted advocate and analytical leader who possesses a minimal dramatic flair while always looking for an opportunity to find moments for laughter and silver linings.

RPS: Who was your favorite teacher and what did you learn from them?

AR: Mr. Earl Pittman - my 9th grade history teacher. His decision to show my class the Eyes on the Prize docuseries continues to have a profound influence on my personal and professional lives.

RPS: What’s your go to karaoke song?

AR: “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston.

Amaury Suarez Gomez, Upper School Science Teacher RPS: What is your favorite song?

ASG: “Baba O’Riley,” by The Who. It always brings to me the euphoria of instinctive freedom. It’s my ringtone, by the way!

RPS: What is your teaching philosophy?

ASG: I have a strong commitment to the act of forming a new individual, a new professional, a new citizen for his/her time, and I am also committed to the development of a culture of inquiry that could eventually lead to the formation of a critical thinker and open-minded professional.

I usually deal in my classes not only with a certain topic or problem or equation but also with the history around that particular problem, its timeframe, how science was done those days, how humans lived back then, and how that particular solution impacted or got applied in daily life.

I consider that when one teaches such an ever-evolving subject as science is, it is almost mandatory to contextualize the model and the bottom-up approach usually used to grab whole concepts or to describe some theories and models.”

RPS: What is your hometown and why is it famous?

ASG: I was born in Guanajay, a small town 30 miles southwest of Havana, Cuba. It used to be famous because of its cultural life -it was even called “The Athens of the West” by the mid-20th century; it is also the hometown of Maria Teresa Vera, the most recognizable female singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the traditional Cuban Trova movement during its early days. Her song “20 Años” (20 years) has been sung by a myriad of performers through the years (including Joss Stone, recently) and Google honored her with a doodle on February 6th, 2020.

Paloma Yannakakis, Upper School English Teacher RPS: Who was your favorite teacher and what did you learn from them?

Paloma Yannakakis: My fifth grade teacher, Ms. ‘M’ -- I learned that the best teachers can make you forget you are in a classroom, and learning can happen in many ways.

RPS: What is the silliest thing you are passionate about?

PY: Stationery and office supplies.

RPS: What inspires you?

PY: My students, all kinds of art, and nature.

RPS: What is your favorite city?

PY: Paris, for its beautiful architecture, river, and walkability.

2021 Year in Review #communitycontinues

Middle School STEAM Students Create Tabletop Games, Receive Design Feedback from Lower Schoolers The STEAM program at Rutgers Prep combines Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to create projects and a process that promotes collaborative skills, an inquisitive mindset, dialogue among learners, and critical thinking skills. Seventh and eighth grade students in our Middle School STEAM class recently designed and built tabletop games, with the intention of bringing joy to the Lower School students.

In the planning stages, they thought about strategy, objectives, rules, aesthetics, feedback, and rewards. Then, each group planned and built their game. Next, second and third grade students got to play the homemade games. Not only did they have a great time, but the student-testers also rated the games and provided feedback through survey questions. This was a wonderful way to give students in Lower School a voice and an opportunity to provide insight and ideas to the Middle Schoolers. For the Middle Schoolers, it was an opportunity to receive feedback and think about how they hear it as creators and how they could incorporate it as designers. In the end, there was one game that took first place (Knockey Hockey) and the rest received honorable mentions. Congratulations to all the game creators and players!

Global Outreach Club Welcomes Dr. Bryn Austin to Speak about Policy Advocacy Work in Public Health

The Global Outreach Club (GO Club) in the Upper School recently hosted Dr. Bryn Austin, Professor of Social & Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health to speak to club members and other interested students. Dr. Austin is the founding director of the Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED) at Harvard Chan and Boston Children’s Hospital.

“We first got to know Dr. Austin because I've been collaborating with her and the team at STRIPED for the past several months as a student fellow,” said Alexandra Xu ’22. “I've specifically been working to spearhead a legislative advocacy campaign in NJ prohibiting the sale of perilous over-the-counter diet pills to minors (the Out of Kids' Hands campaign).”

Dr. Austin spoke to students a bit about her work at STRIPED, particularly her policy advocacy work in prohibiting the sale of diet pills to minors, and illustrated how the banning of such weight loss supplements is intrinsically a matter of social justice and health equity. The presentation was followed by time for questions and answers from club members and students in attendance.

“We thought the Q&A session went really well, as students asked such thought-provoking questions,” said Xu. “For instance, Serena Li ’22 inquired about the intersection of journalism and public health advocacy, and Siya Angras ’23 queried about the prevalence of weight stigma in public health messaging and clinical settings. Several students also stayed behind to discuss the flaws of the BMI model, the roots of anti-fatness in anti-Blackness, and other topics, so we really hope to build on this momentum and continue fostering dialogue on health equity, eating disorders, body liberation, and more as part of GO Club.”

Advanced Scene Study Students Benefit from Performance of Janet Rodgers’s “Irena Gut: Only a Girl” Upper School students in the Advanced Scene Study course in the RPS Drama department were treated to a visit by Janet Rodgers, who performed her solo show in poetry and prose entitled “Irena Gut: Only a Girl.” The 50-minute piece, created by Rodgers, depicts the true story of Irena Gut, a young Catholic Polish girl who saved the lives of twelve young Jewish professionals from extermination by the Nazis during WWII, and is based on the autobiography of Irena Gut Opdyke titled In My Hands.

The performance, arranged by Dr. Loy and RPS Drama and Acting teacher David Seamon, was a perfect fit for the Advanced Scene Study students. “These students are working on modern scenes right now that ask them to access a broad range of emotions and achieve high-stakes objectives through clear action,” said Seamon. “And lo and behold, Janet Rodgers is a master of these crafts.”

Rodgers is Professor Emerita of Theatre at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she taught for 25 years, was Head of Performance for seven years, and created the first MFA with emphasis in Voice and Speech Pedagogy in the USA. Prior to coming to VCU, she taught at the Boston Conservatory of Music and was principal actress with The Boston Shakespeare Company and Boston’s Lyric Stage as well as performing Off-Broadway at La Mama Theatre.

“Janet’s acting inspired the students to strive toward broadening their own emotional vocabulary, vocal projection, and commitment to character,” said Seamon, adding that a few students noted when Janet had to check her script or drink water, she did not break character. “All in all, it was wonderful for these students to see such a polished and refined performance by a working artist who engages with things that matter through her artistic endeavors.

Thank you to Dr. Loy for setting it up, as well as Phyllis Marganoff, and big thanks to Janet for sharing her time and talent with us.”

Alumni Profiles Paul Kermizian, Class of 1993 B.F.A., Film, Syracuse University Current Position: Co-Founder & CEO, Barcade On the Rutgers Prep campus I felt like there was more freedom than I had experienced at my previous schools. I had to take some math and science classes, but I was able to accommodate my interests and had the flexibility to take different art classes, which had a significant impact on me. I learned the ability to be flexible and change direction and I started that at Rutgers Prep. I pivoted completely away from anything I thought I would be doing but was able to think outside of the box for my career.

Leigh Hofstetter Diacont, Class of 2004 B.A. Political Science and Communications, Lehigh University Current Position: Senior Client Partner, Twitter RPS prepared me for my career in so many ways. The communication skills I learned at Rutgers Prep were second to none. I received a great education in writing and how to communicate through writing. Also being so involved in the orchestra at Prep. What I do now involves presenting to a room of executives. Having the orchestral experiences of performing in front of large crowds, like that at Voorhees Chapel, made me comfortable in talking with people and standing up in front of a room in the corporate world. When I look back to fifteen years ago, I realize that the education I received is almost as valuable if not more so than the one I received at Lehigh University.

Alumni Profiles Halcyon Person, Class of 2006 B.A. Architecture and Urban Planning, Princeton University Current Position: Head Writer & Co-Executive Producer, Karma’s World on Netflix I felt that going from RPS to college was a smooth transition.

We did college-level work in high school and I think that it prepared me with the right tools to read, research, and factfind. Those really were the skills that transferred to college and then into my career. I’ve worked in everything from kids TV to late night TV, and being able to have that ability to dig deep to understand the background and nuances is something that I drew from my experience at RPS.

Moazam Shah, Class of 2010 B.A. Economics and Middle Eastern Studies, Rutgers University Current Position: Product Designer, Human Interfaces, Facebook I’m pursuing art and design now - I didn’t study design in college, but RPS taught me the curiosity to teach it to myself.

We are all really curious about achieving something beyond high school. So many of us have created great vibes. I got the Facebook job, because that curiosity inspired me to apply to different companies. One great part of the RPS family is that everyone is succeeding together with their peers on their own path. Everyone is working really hard and achieving really big things, and most of us found that interest in high school.

Class Notes From College Avenue (Through 1963)

David Wurtzel ’49 writes: “I am David Wurtzel, Class of 1949.

Over the summer, I turned 90. I’m still active, but not kicking up a lot of dust.

At RPS, I acquired my first bicycle with gears. Wow! 3 speeds! I bought it from my house master, David Heinlein.

That was the beginning of my interest in cycle touring. I’ve ridden in: the UK, Sweden, the low countries, and Australia. I’ve also used a bicycle for commuting.

Now I ride a recumbent tricycle, photo attached. It is my exercise machine and my errand machine. I gave up driving 3 years ago after 70 years.

Also attached is a photo taken about 100 years ago of the great grandfather for whom I’m named. He rode a trike, too.

My main career was in computers, in mainframe days. I worked on tracking spacecraft, the first credit card system, and making computers accessible to non-programmers.

I’m married to Martha Weintraub.

We, both previously married, have successfully blended our families. We enjoy children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We have traveled six continents together, missing only Australia, which I visited on business.

Class Notes - Bell Bottoms, Bee Gees and the Copper Beech (1964-1983) Richard Leveson ’68 writes: “Surfacing after 53 years! I must be getting old. An apt time to recall a rough quote from Ernest Thayer, the author of Casey at the Bat, at his 15th reunion at Harvard. “We have now reached the point where we realize that the old man wasn’t such a damn fool.

We used to watch our parents battling with the dragon and say to ourselves ‘Why don’t they hit it over the head with a club?’ Alas, now we know the answer. We have hit the dragon over the head with a club, and we have seen the dragon smile.”

David Harbour ’80 visited campus and wowed Tara O’Connell Klipstein ’81, and Head of School Loy with some amazing magic. David is a Corporate Magician who travels the country for both his corporate and private clients.

Roger Orlando ’80 sends in a few updates: 1. On November 2, 2021 I was elected to public office as a Councilman in the City of Tucker, Georgia, population 38,000. www.OrlandoforTucker.com 2. I’ve been sole shareholder of The Orlando Firm, P.C. in Georgia for most of my 33 years as a trial lawyer. www.Atlanta.law 3. I’ve been “of counsel” to the law firm of Javerbaum, Wurgaft, Hicks, Kahn, Wikstrom & Sinins, P.C. as Chair of its mass tort department for the past 6 years. 10 offices in New Jersey and 1 in NYC. www.javerbaumwurgaft.com/ 4. In April 2021 myself and a partner opened a Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant in Chamblee, Georgia called KARV Kitchen. While way too young for this, I became a first-time grandfather with the birth of young Wesley Bodiford on December 29, 2020.

Class Notes Madonna, Macintoshes and Make-Shift Classrooms (1984-1999) George Baier III ’84 and Marc Bromfeld ’85 reunited at the Rutgers University and Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens football game.

Marc Bromfeld ’85 will serve as chairman of the board of directors for Responsibility.org. Marc is the director of corporate affairs, social responsibility and charitable giving at Edrington Americas.

Michael Sauter ’85 published his third book “European Thought and Culture, 1350-1992” in 2021. He lives outside London with his family and is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Suffolk.

Class Notes - RPS 2.0 (2000-Current) Jennifer Rapps Cifelli ’04 writes “A man walks into my restaurant (Blawenburg Bistro), orders lunch, and asks the girl at the counter ‘Who here went to Rutgers Prep?’ She responds that the owner went and her daughter now attends and then asks why he was asking. The man shared that every time he comes in he sees the same car with an RPS magnet on it. I overhear this conversation and go and introduce myself, asking him how he knew about Prep.

He told me he is an alum, Class of 1961!

He now comes in a few times a week and often shares his memories of the school with me. Here we are just the other day, Class of 2004 and Richard Schatzman ’61.

Rick Halmo ’05 married Aneta on October 2, 2021. Right by his side was fellow Argonaut Best Man, Rob Krauzer ’05.

Lee Jablow ’05 writes “Hi everyone--I am including the obligatory kids photo. Ella (4) and Colette (1) say hello!

Joseph Bowen ’10 and Marshal Farmer were married in Delaware on August 21, 2021 surrounded by family, friends, and Argonauts.

Phoenetia Browne ’11 was named top womens football player of Saint Kitts & Nevis by Inside Caribbean Football. She is currently the striker for the German Club SC Sand.

Jacquelyne Pizzuto Hern ’11 married Captain Jackson Hern on September 11, 2021 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in North Caldwell, NJ. It was a beautiful day!

Lilah Galdi Olsson ’12 welcomed a baby girl, Averie Reilly Olsson, with husband James on September 14, 2021.

Christian Klipstein and Evan Lombardo, Class of 2015, Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coaches of Lynchburg and Dickinson respectively, faced off in a Fall 2021 scrimmage.
