The 7th issue of Coverboy Magazine explores different perspectives in photography and the aesthetic of the male physique. This month’s Coverboy, Nik Makeenko, was photographed by Serge Lee especially for this issue and Alex Bego provides an insight into what makes a man eligible to be our “Coverboy.” I also interviewed Serge Lee about his photography and his own aesthetic. ADDICTED TO SUMMER By Devon Myers
Addicted has always been a bit friskier than ES Collection, its older and more highbrow designer cousin. The brand’s meant for guys who want a little edge infused in their swimwear at more affordable prices. But this summer, Addicted is taking risqué to a whole new level with its latest campaign featuring the boys of Bel Ami.
Is Addicted a sports brand like ES? Not so much. It is more a concept brand.
“This summer’s collection is sexier than ever, “ confirms Nir Zilberman of ES Collection USA. “It’s reckless and fun.” Still, the summer collection maintains the style and superior fit guys have come to love. Also, the quality of Addicted remains far superior to comparable brands. The only difference is in the fabric. Where designer brands like ES and Gucci use fine Italian fabrics, Addicted exports less expensive cotton and modal fabrics from Spain and Portugal – allowing for lower prices. Pieces in Addicted’s summer collection range from US$18.00 to US$70.00, with most items less than US$30.
Do you expect the Addicted wearer will one day grow into ES? That’s our plan.
Why did ES Collection launch another brand? Nir Zilberman: ES is a high-end brand that uses expensive fabrics. It’s not affordable to everyone. We realized pretty quickly that the style and cuts also appealed to a demographic that were just starting out in life and didn’t have the disposable income yet to spend on swim trunks. We decided to create a second brand with a similar spirit and an equally strong identity that would be more affordable to young guys. Why call it Addicted? Because guys wear them once and they are addicted. Are addictions good? Sure, there are many good addictions. Sports, the quest for optimum health, most love… Some addictions are great!
What kind of guy wears Addicted? Athletic guys with a playful spirit. They are also fashion conscious. It’s amazing how many young guys are fashion conscious today!
Is that why Addicted is on more store shelves than ES? The ES collection has a restrictive policy regarding distribution. We don’t sell to just any stores. Retailers need to meet a pretty high standard to carry the line. Addicted is a consumer brand and so it is in more places. What are some styles that you might do for Addicted that you would not do for ES? We wouldn’t do mesh for ES. It’s too young for the sophisticated ES Collection wearer. Also some of the long boxers that were designed for Addicted wouldn’t translate for ES. The ES wearer isn’t interested in the cut and also, because of the high-end fabric in ES, the briefs would be extremely expensive to make. The men’s athletic wear industry has exploded in recent years with tons of new designer brands. It´s a growing market. For so long, the men´s athleticwear was lackluster with all brands looking the same. I am thrilled that so many new and great brands have come to the market offering new colors, increased comfort and sexiness.

As a photographer I come across many great models of different ages and nationalities. The more I worked on men’s portraits the more I realized the prejudice that exists of the perfect male in the world. Most contemporary photographers and markets showcase a strong muscular body, huge pecs, biceps, and perfect abs as the perfect man. Not surprisingly, I often worked with muscle bodies, but I’ve always had a fascination with a skinny frame. It’s easy for skinny guys to maintain their shape. You can often see their six peck when they flex and chicks dig skinny guys. According to a new study heterosexual women and gay men may be more attracted to men who are thin. The study was widely read by people around the world and debunked the notion that most women and gay men are instinctively drawn to guys who posses “evolved” macho features, or what you might call PBM: Protective Boyfriend Material. I’m not saying this means that muscled masculinity isn’t attractive, but I want to point out that thin guys are just as sexy as beefy men. It’s a question of personal taste. I admit beauty is not just the muscles, or thin frame, or tall or short, but it’s a consistency in form. What makes the difference? A man’s personality.

What distinguishes you from other photographers? It’s hard to answer... Let me think! In my opinion, while shooting even a regular person who is standing in front of the camera for the first time I try to shoot him as if he is a celebrity. I want every model to feel special. In my experience, it works: if the model caught this feeling it is evident at the picture.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? I always keep in mind a well-known quote by Paulo Coelho “Never give up your dreams, follow the signs”. This expression helps me to maintain my inspiration and be self-confident every day. What’s been your worst and best experiences as a photographer? The latest pleasant moments were shootings in Thailand of the new collection of Mar-
cuse, an Australian swimwear brand. The shots of professional models against the picturesque landscapes are the most pleasant part of my job, the result of which I enjoy looking at again and again. Plus, it’s a good way to combine work and visiting of a new place at the same time. Speaking of my worst experience, I try not to keep it in mind, that’s why I can’t speak about something negative. What’s the most difficult part of your job? The most difficult part of my job at the moment is to pay enough attention to retouching the photos. I have lots of material, which is waiting for “its time,” and it’s bothering me because I simply lack of physical possibility to share with the world some beautiful shots which were taken long time ago and which are waiting for the moment when I find time for its post-production. That’s why right now I’m in a search of a retoucher who will be able to capture my vision and style.
INTERVIEW WITH SERGE LEE
If you had one day to shoot anything you want what would you do? It would be a fashion shoot in New York for GQ or Vogue. At least, I’m dreaming about such day at the moment. How do you break the ice with a model? First of all, there must be cool music at the location, which creates a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Secondly, I try to communicate with the models in a way we’re long-term friends and often, at the end of the shooting we feel that we have known each other for ages. There’s a large amount of variety in your work, in your subjects, your locations, and the genres that you work photograph. Do you feel that versatility is important to succeed as a photographer? In my opinion, If photography is really your passion, it’s impossible to always focus on only one genre. It’s difficult to imagine for me that
I could shoot only men, or only women. Firstly, sooner or later it would become boring for me, and secondly, it would be difficult to handle in terms of money. That’s why versatility is not only about gaining success, but also about maintaining your personal interest to your favorite business and having money to live off. Though, there are some genres which are less interesting for me and which I don’t work in without a significant reason. For example, lately I’ve started to get tired of reportage shooting. What does the future hold for Serge Lee? I truly believe that what the future is holding for me is getting benefits from my current work. I mean, I would like that in future (not far future I hope…) everything turned how I imagine it now: covers on international magazines, numerous publications, personal exhibitions, albums with my works, meeting new people and traveling.
