The 6th issue of Coverboy Magazine is a truly global collaboration of aesthetics from around the world. David Vance returns to give us a taste of his new book, Men & Gods, and demonstrates that behind the physical strength of his subjects lies an innate harmony of vulnerability to the strongest of men. Alex Bego goes behind the camera to discover what sparked Alex Bachurin’s fire show Salamandra that’s igniting an inferno of wonder across Russia. We introduce you to Alejandro Corzo and I promise it won’t be the last time Alejandro graces the pages of our magazine. David Todd Serves Up The Modeling Industry’s Top Men By Shane Gallagher “I’m always on the search for the next top model,” says David Todd of Los Angeles based DT Model Management. His agency boasts one of the strongest men’s boards in the world today, including male model superstars Nick Youngquest and Chad White. “I’ve become pretty keen at spotting a guy with a hidden ‘it’ factor.”
What motivated you to create a modeling agency? It has always been my dream to have my own agency. I started as an agent when I was 18 and have worked hard to make a name for myself. After nearly twenty years, I felt it was time to move on and do things the way I wanted them done.
He says top guys are more than just a pretty face. “They have to be able to stand out in a crowd and capture the eye. They should be classically handsome, with a killer smile, and at least 6’1’’.”
How are you doing things differently? The old days of mailing clients comp cards of 500 different models to choose from are over. Today’s clients know exactly what they are looking for when they call an agency. It’s the agency’s job to provide the body of perfection that makes the client’s vision come to life.
That’s right, men six feet tall and under need not apply. “To work in fashion, a guy must fit perfectly into a tailored suit,” Todd explains. “That requires height… and a chiseled swimmer’s body.” Just because your friend’s cousin told you that you could be a model doesn’t mean you can, he warns. On the flipside, just because no one but mom believes your look is special, doesn’t mean you can’t. “I can see through bad skin or extra weight,” says Todd. In fact, that’s how many of his models first arrive to him, as often, they are still in high school. “I love developing and then watching as my models flourish into superstars. Seeing them on billboards or in magazines, that’s my favorite part of the job. That’s when I know all of the hard work has been worth it.”
Is it fun to be surrounded by beautiful people all the time? After doing this for so long, it doesn’t really faze me anymore. It’s a normal day at the office for me. What kind of work goes into building an agency? Endless planning, paperwork, licenses, contracts, portfolios, and on and on. It was a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the beginning. Why did you decide to open in West Hollywood? West Hollywood is my home. I love it here. Why not New York City? I love New York and travel there often but COVERBOY PAGE 7
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. My family is here. I think of myself as an NYC agent living in Los Angeles. How did you convince models to leave their agencies and follow you? Some of the guys, I had discovered and developed from scratch. They know how hard I work for them! When I let it be known that I was leaving to start my own agency, many asked, “Where do I sign?” What was the biggest hurdle in setting up shop? Getting the clients familiar with the new agency. Luckily, most were extremely supportive and went out of their way to book with us. In our first week, we were already booking major campaigns. However, there were a few that took a little longer then expected to come on board. How did you get them on board? We kept pushing until we got their attention. Like anything in life, it’s important to prove yourself a force to be reckoned with. We may be the new agency in LA but look at our board. We have some of the most recognizable working models in the business.

What do you look for in a model? I look for guys with a swimmers build, stunning features and a winning, money-making smile. Personality is key. It’s nice to be pretty, but you have to have an energy that lights up the room.
What’s the biggest mistake beginner models often make? Thinking they know everything. New faces need to let their agent guide them and make the right decisions. If you think you know everything, you should represent yourself. Is it important they have a thick skin? Models are paid to stand there and look amazing. There will definitely be times when they are not treated kindly. Guys need to get through the job without being rude to the client or the photographer. At the end of the day, it’s going to make the model stronger. Do guys need to be comfortable with nudity? The business is about skin. A model that comes that in with a list of “I won’t do this or that”, must realize that his career will likely be limited to endless catalog and no editorial or advertising. How do you feel about model listing sites like modelmayhem.com? The sites are a breeding ground for predators. What’s been your greatest accomplishment so far? Professionally, I am proud of recently securing a six-figure fragrance campaign for Nick Youngquest. It really secured my faith in my decision to open my own company. Visit dtmodelmanagement.com

Alex’s passion for fire was ignited while studying acting at GITIS. One night he went with a group of friends to a fire show for the first time in his mid-twenties. He was mesmerized by the performance and decided to pursue a career as a fire magician instead of being an actor. He joined a local team of artists and trained for a year before he formed a partnership with another artist from the same workshop and in 2006 performed as a duo. They spent the money from their first performance on a trip to Paris to visit Versaille and Fontainebleau. It was here that Alex found further inspiration from a small salamander. The salamander had been the symbol of Francois I, a patron of such artists as Leonardo da Vinci and Benevenuto Cellini. A few weeks after returning to Moscow a talented girl joined the two men and the trio Salamandra was born. The Salamandra Fire Show became an immediate success in Moscow, as this type of entertainment was entirely new in Russia. Many corporate and private clients booked Salamandra and the trio has grown to include a cast of 20 people. The passion for fire is something that, for Alex, he cannot control. Like an inferno it consumes him in life, drives him to put on amazing shows, and collaborate with talented people to create spectacular costumes and props. The qualities Alex appreciates most in people are honesty, sincerity, and passion. It is passion that will lead someone to succeed in life.
