The 5th issue of Coverboy is the embodiment of a seductive summer and we hope that you will savor and enjoy every single page of this issue. It was a privilege to work with David Vance in preparing two features especially for Coverboy. David has been in the industry for decades and without a doubt his longevity comes from his passion as an artist. It is a passion that has inspired generations of photographers to emulate his style and inspired others to enter into the world of modeling. We’ve put together a retrospective of some of David’s work that we believe is a perfect fit for Coverboy. In addition, we’re also featuring his latest book Jungle Fever. It’s a primal and exotic visual feast that will get your pulse racing. This issue also features Diego Arnary by photographer Salvador Pozo. Diego deliciously tempts you to join him in the pool, the bedroom, and the gym. This Columbian’s star is rising and we’re very happy to be able to bring you along for the ride in his latest collaboration with Salvador Pozo. Olesya Alexandronis and Gavin Harrison continue our seductive summer issue with two editorial shoots that are extremely cool, and feature the very hot Sasha Nice & James Green, respectively.

Bright reds and every shade of blue. Prints are making a strong showing too. Would you agree men’s swimwear continues to grow more provocative each season? We’re seeing a lot more super low bikinis this summer. Guys are working hard on their physique and want to show it off. What better way than with a sexy, skimpy swimsuit? Are string bikinis next? (Laughing) I am sure in some part of the world, the string bikini is all the rage right now! I’ve been thinking about adding an open back swim trunk to our line. How fun would that be?

Interview with david vance

When did you know you wanted to become a photographer? At 10 I enjoyed drawing and painting… I thought I would be an artist…. Around 14 my parents nudged me toward photography thinking it would be a more lucrative endeavor. What they didn’t realize is art is in the soul… you don’t choose it… it chooses you. You’ve been in the industry for decades and have gone from developing film to essentially being able to digitally developing an environment, do you think digital media has improved photography, or has the industry lost something? Change is good… the blessing of digital for me is that it allows me to alter my color images in the way I was always able to do with black and white. So much more is possible and so many more choices are mine to make based on my impressions.
Your work is more than just the male form and you’ve worked with celebrities and in women’s fashion. Do you think that your versatility has contributed to your longevity? What has contributed to my longevity is that I’m an addict and I really have no choice. What I’m doing is what I love, so I keep doing it regardless of the obstacles. Is there someone you’d love to work with, but haven’t? or is there someone that you have worked with, but haven’t had a chance to get back in front of your camera? I photographed 2 of the Golden Girls, Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan It would be great to add Betty White to the list. There are many unknown models I have photographed who I would like to get back in front of my camera.

What are the different challenges in photographing men vs. photographing women?
You’re based in Miami. What differentiates Miami from NYC, LA, Paris, or Milan?
Photographing men is simpler. Women take longer prep. Both are pretty much the same in front of the camera. The model’s performance is not necessarily a matter of gender.
This is not place that fosters creative growth for a photographer. There really isn’t much fashion being created here. It’s been a struggle to grow and prosper in this environment. That being said I have been fortunate to be recognized by sources outside of Miami so I’ve been able to experience working in larger cities and creating some memorable work over the years.
There’s a strong influence of sculpture, classical art, and even literature in your work are there certain classical artists that you continually draw inspiration from in your work? Not artists so much as periods of art like the Renaissance, the Pre-Raphaelites, and the Romantic period. What’s been your best and worst experience as a photographer? Hard to recall I have a problem clinging to distasteful memories. What distinguishes you from other photographers? I have had different life experiences so my work reflects my experience and my taste. I see things just a bit differently because of who I am as a human being. What is the best advice you’ve been given about photography? And life? When I was a Sophomore at RIT one of my professors told the class the best thing we could do with our cameras was to put them in a drawer then go out and experience, see a play, read a book, get laid, because it is only life experience that seasons your art.
Even though Miami isn’t a “fashion capital” do you think the weather makes it easier to do outdoor shoots anytime of year? The summer months are really oppressive if you’re shooting anything more than swimwear. Acrobats, gymnasts, dancers, athletes… it’s part of their profession to stay in shape and they understand their bodies, does that make it easier to work with them? Of course it’s a real joy to collaborate. They are consumed by their art as I am by mine. What are some of your dream locations to shoot? None that are specific… I do love industrial settings and futuristic architecture. If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing? Pastel portraits in the Piazza Navonna.
If you ever retire will we find you in the Piazza Navonna? Maybe in another life. I like where I am. What is your process? I used to be so rigid… a Virgo… I always needed to draw my ideas in a sketchbook before a shoot so I would know exactly what I was going to do… then I realized that I missed some of the best moments on the way to my destination. Now things progress more organically, with less planning. Do you still have your sketchbooks? Probably. I know I have at least one. Have you ever thought about publishing them? No. Not really. Is there certain music or a mood that you have on set? I like many kinds of music… sometimes it’s best to have the music that works best for the subject I shooting. It seems many photographers are comfortable behind the camera rather than in front of it. Why is that? Because we are voyeurs: not exhibitionists. Are you camera shy? Pretty much :)

The photos use subtle elements to transport you to the jungles of Africa, Central America, the bamboo forests of Asia, the mangrove forests in the South Pacific, and the forests of Europe. The men all have a seductive strength that is palpable and inspiring, but also inviting you to shed your clothes and join them in the primal world of nature. Desire is one of man’s most primal instincts and Jungle Fever will certainly awaken your desire.

COVER story Interview by Marc T. Russell Where did the idea for Jungle Fever come from? My partner and I built a house and a half acre of land that had just 3 large oak trees. After living her for over 20 years one day I looked out the second floor bedroom window and say the yard (some call it a garden) in a new light (there may have been weed involved. LOL) Always looking for new places and concepts it dawned on me that I lived in a jungle.

Where did you do the outdoor shoots? Mostly in my yard and neighboring properties. Did Mother Nature cooperate? I also had an indoor contingency some of the images reflect the jungle feeling in a more stylistic way shot in the studio.
Jungles are known for their biodiversity and you have a very diverse group of models. Did you know which models you wanted for which shots, or did you experiment? Both really sometimes, as I said it just happened organically. Models all bring a different energy and enthusiasm to a shoot. I feed off of that a lot.
How did you decide on the covershot of the book? We’ll unlike many of the images, it was PG enough to go on the cover and it was simple enough to carry the title and attract attention. Plus Leonardo is very beautiful and that never hurts.... well it hurts me a little because I don’t look like him.. LOL.
The book focuses on the male nude form, what do you do to make the models feel comfortable being naked in front of a camera?
This is a self-published book. What are the pros and cons of self-publishing vs. going through someone else?
I’m a klutz. I have a kind of funny personality. I don’t know when people meet me I’m not usually what they expect more disarming.
Self-publishing gives you control and a bigger profit, but along with that comes the responsibility for the outcome and also for the marketing. Publishers take most of the profit but they are responsible to make their money back they take the risk. I didn’t mind taking the risk because I really believed in the quality of the product. Haven’t broken even yet, but soon, I hope.
How long did this project take to produce? About a year.
