The devastating tomato pest
Since the spread of Tuta Absoluta in Spain in 2007, Russell IPM has become involved in a campaign of resource-building to combat this dangerous pest. Tuta absoluta is an aggressive tomato pest that mines the leaves and burrows into the fruits, causing losses of up to 100%. Since the first detection of this insect in Europe, it has been spreading rapidly through North and East Africa, obliterating tomato crops. Russell IPM has developed bio-rational control strategies to combat Tuta Absoluta. The comprehensive system includes insect pheromone lures, traps, bio-rational pesticides and a specially developed beneficial micro fauna that recharges soil to increase plant resistance to the moth.
Tuta Absoluta has a very high reproductive ability, with adult females laying hundreds of eggs throughout their lifetime. It takes this species between 18 and 21 days to grow from egg to adult in warm weather.

The problem The larvae of Tuta absoluta mine the leaves, producing large galleries. They burrow into the fruit, causing a substantial loss of tomato production in both protected and open-field cultivations. The larvae feed on mesophyll tissues and make irregular mines on the leaf surface. Damage can occur throughout the entire growing cycle of tomatoes, reaching up to 100%. Tuta absoluta can produce up to 10-12 generations in a year in favourable conditions. As long as a food source is available, the larvae are very unlikely to enter diapause. Tuta absoluta can overwinter as eggs, pupae and adults. Tomato plants can be attacked from seedlings through to maturity. In tomato, infestation can be found on apical buds, leaves and stems, flowers and fruits, on which the black frass is visible. On potato, the attack is mainly on aerial parts and the tuber.

Biotrine is a larvacide, affecting the 1st and 2nd instars. It triggers the plantsâ€™ defence systems to combat pathogens, limiting the possibility for secondary infection through the open wounds caused by Tuta absoluta. Biotrine assists the plant in preparing against further attacks from the newly-hatched larvae. Provides protection against early and advanced leaf damage caused by Tuta absoluta.

Fytomax PM is a biorational product based on neem seed extract, with an active ingredient of 0.1% Azadirachtin.
Fytomax PM has multiple modes of action, but primarily works very well when combined with Biotrine. It works in synergy with Biotrine, prolonging its effectivity. When applied at early stages, Fytomax inhibits fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew. It acts as a natural repellent to most insects, such as whitefly, aphids and mites.
A safe & effective bio-rational solution Target Crops
To repel Tuta absoluta and whitefly, for a more potent, combined effect, mix 250 ml of Fytomax PM with 50 ml of Biotrine per 100 L of water. This mixture acts as an insecticide and fungicide, providing protection for 10-12 days. To combat advanced powdery mildew infestation (up to 50% coverage), mix 3 L of Fytomax PM with 500 ml of Biotrine per 1000 L of water and apply thoroughly on the leaves for total protection.
Spray crops every 7-14 days.
Leave for 3 days after spraying before harvesting.

Pheromone-based solutions Russell IPM formulates and manufactures a Tuta absoluta pheromone lure, which can be used for monitoring, as well as in greenhouse mass trapping. Russell IPM produces the standard TUA 500 lure, which lasts for four weeks. An improved formulation of the lure TUA-Optima (0.8 mg) is also available, with the additional benefit of a constant pheromone release over a longer period of time and suitable for warmer climates.
