FINDING INSPIRATION Inspiration can be a tricky thing.

We often imagine it arriving in quiet moments—cool mornings, clear minds, fresh starts. But as I write this in December, the air is heavy and warm, the pace of life feels rushed, and it seems like everyone is carrying just a little more than usual. I’ll be honest: I’ve had a hard time finding my footing lately, and an even harder time figuring out what inspires me as we move toward a new year.

And maybe that’s exactly why this issue matters.

The theme of this month’s Point of Vue is inspiration, and within these pages you’ll meet people from our community who embody it in so many different ways. Some inspire through perseverance, others through creativity, service, faith, or simply showing up day after day when it isn’t easy. None of them claim to have it all figured out and that’s what makes their stories resonate.

Need a singing telegram, a husband-for-the-day, or even a party bus?

There’s no need to go running around town or scouring the internet for solutions – you just need to Call Tyrone Enterprises. Through his business, Tyrone Smith has offered a myriad of much-needed assistance to those across the bayou, including (but not limited to) lawn care, moving assistance, food and flower delivery, long and short distance transportation, singing telegrams, a full-size party bus, and more. Lately, I’ve been reminded that inspiration doesn’t always come from grand moments or perfect timing.

Sometimes it shows up quietly, in conversations, in acts of kindness, in watching someone keep going even when life feels heavy. It shows up in our neighbors, our families, our teachers, our volunteers, and our friends.

People who continue to pour into this community even when they’re tired, busy, or unsure of what comes next.

Our first story this month introduces us to the Lambert family. Beau and Erica are raising two sons, Carson and Braylon. They are both diagnosed with a rare genetic disability called L1 syndrome. Erica’s full time job as mom places her in the constant position of advocating for her boys. The Lambert family is an inspiration to others for how they continue to choose faith over fear as they navigate the future. Learn more about the Lamberts beginning on page 14.

My hope is that this issue meets you where you are. That it sparks something for you in the new year: encouragement, reflection, or even just a pause in the middle of the hustle. Because inspiration isn’t about having all the answers. I’m learning to let go of the pressure to feel like I have to always be “on.” Instead, I’m choosing to be “open”—to notice the people around me, to listen more closely, and to find inspiration in the very real, imperfect moments we’re living through right now.

As this new year begins, I’m also reminded that inspiration doesn’t always come from clarity or certainty, but from trust. Trust that God is still at work, even in the mess and in the moments when we feel unsettled. I hope you find inspiration not only in big dreams or fresh starts, but in the quiet faithfulness of everyday life. POV

Who inspired you the most last year, and why?

BRENT Over the last year, my biggest inspiration has been my wife, Gená Ragas. She pours her heart into being an incredible wife, a devoted mom, a dedicated cross country coach, and a passionate Pilates instructor—all while somehow keeping our home, our three boys, and our whole world running smooth and steady. She leads with love, grit, and grace, and I’m better every day just watching the way she shows up for our family.

KAREN As the leader of Leadership Terrebonne, I am continually inspired every year by the number of people in volunteer and paid positions who love our community and never stop in their mission to improve Terrebonne Parish. These great members of our community rarely say "no" and pour their hearts and souls into their specific missions. These people aren't necessarily the CEOs of their companies but everyday people who see a need and get busy finding ways to meet that need. Our people are really the "good" of the Good Earth. Hearing their passion inspires me to continue to do my part.

MACKENZIE Jordan Hefler inspired me to do more fun things with my art instead of just doing it for work!

A GENTLEMAN’S REVIVAL

1 In the heart of downtown Thibodaux, a onceforgotten building has been thoughtfully restored into a space that feels both timeless and intentional. JLB Properties of Lafourche, LLC, owned by Jamie Bouterie, now occupies a structure that had stood as little more than a shell since the early 1900s. Today, it tells a new story rooted in preservation, design, and a deep respect for the community it serves.

When Jamie first encountered the building, there was little left to save. Decades of vacancy had stripped it of nearly everything except one remarkable feature: the original wood floors. Rather than erase the past, the renovation embraced it. Architectural details such as the original door styles and transoms were carefully preserved, while the exterior was restored to echo the charm of a French Quarter-style façade. Situated squarely in downtown Thibodaux, the project became both a personal passion and a contribution to the city’s ongoing revitalization.

Bringing the vision to life required a trusted team. Eric Tate of Tate Construction served as the general contractor, guiding the transformation with precision and care.

Whitney Bouterie led the design efforts,

ensuring every detail aligned with the overarching concept. High Tide Consultants provided engineering expertise, while Cody Thibodaux drafted the plans that bridged history and modern function.

Inside, the design reads like a true gentleman’s office and lounge, feeling masculine, refined, and inviting. Inspired by classic Ralph Lauren style, the space balances tailored sophistication with a relaxed, loungelike atmosphere. Rich navy and green tones set the mood, while antique elements soften the bold palette and anchor the design in tradition. The result is an environment that feels grand without being intimidating, stylish yet genuinely comfortable.

Each room has its own personality while remaining cohesive with the whole. Offices, lobby, lounge, conference room, kitchenette, and bathroom each serve a distinct purpose, unified through thoughtful color choices, textures, and finishes. Layered wallpaper, rich leathers, and curated antiques create visual interest, while the layout ensures the space functions seamlessly for daily use.

and bar. The space that immediately draws the eye and invites conversation. It serves as both a visual anchor and a reflection of the building’s story: bold, confident, and rooted in history. Perhaps the most unique element of all, however, is the building itself. Its survival through more than a century, now paired with renewed purpose, makes it truly one of a kind.

For Jamie, the project represents more than a beautiful office. After more than 30 years in the commercial real estate industry working within corporate America, this restoration marks a meaningful shift. “My vision was to play a part in the recent revitalization of downtown Thibodaux,” Jamie shares. “It means a great deal to know this building has been brought back to life and will continue for many years to come.”

Today, JLB Properties of Lafourche stands as a testament to what thoughtful restoration can achieve; honoring the past while creating spaces meant to be lived in and enjoyed. It reflects both the character of downtown Thibodaux and Jamie Bouterie’s passion for transforming properties into places where life, work, and community can thrive. POV

BY EVAN CRESSIONE | PHOTOS BY CHANNING CANDIES Erica and Beau Lambert, along with their beloved boys Carson and Braylon, recently represented New Orleans’ Miracle League [an inclusive baseball league for children with disabilities] in the Manning Family Children's Holiday Parade. Erica thought her older son, Carson, would surely lose an arm from how long he extended his hand out for high fives from everyone they passed.

The Lambert boys are incredibly social people. The opposite of homebodies, these boys thrive around others and their mother

sees it. “They love being around people.

They want to greet everybody! Braylon will literally do circles in his wheelchair to make sure nobody is left un-greeted,” Erica said.

Even during service at Mulberry Baptist Church, where the Lambert family attends, the boys’ spirits seem to ignite in the present of Jesus. Their mother Erica said, “There are some times when the pastor will be in the middle of prayer, and they’ll get super excited. [...] I guess that’s Jesus!”

Living with L1 Erica, originally from Shreveport, had a very involved childhood herself. She was lucky enough to be surrounded with family who continue to be active in her life. Now, with her own children, her and her husband Beau Lambert are that very involved family.

Carson and Braylon Lambert are eighteen and fourteen years-old. They are both diagnosed with a rare genetic disability called L1 syndrome. According to Erica,

there is not much one can find on L1, but it does only affect males and the chances of having one—let alone two kids—with it is very rare. However, despite the scarcity of their particular circumstances, the Lambert family has managed to make connections with families across the world living with L1.

But, living in the deep south with such circumstances has proven to be a bit difficult. “In our direct area…we do most of our stuff in New Orleans,” Erica chuckled.

Both Carson and Braylon were born at Ochsner in the city and so everything since has been through their team over there.

“Now that they’re trickling down, they can do some things in Raceland, but Miracle League is in New Orleans, horse riding is in Baton Rouge,” Erica shared.

Not every community is quite designed to be accessible for every kind of family, but when you call a place home for so long, leaving it would be a big life shift.

Erica’s husband and the boys’ father, Beau Lambert, works as the manager for Terrebonne Marine selling boats, motors, and trailers. Because the boss and owner are Carson and Braylon’s paran, Beau’s work offers him a lot of necessary leeway when it comes to his kids including time off and allowing the boys to accompany him at work.

Career aside, Erica described her husband as a “bayou boy,” saying this is the most North her family will probably live. She added, “I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. We have family here, and it’s…home!”

Unique From Birth Erica f irst discovered something abnormal about her first pregnancy at a regular appointment. The doctor noticed something was off and requested she be

checked by a maternal fetal specialist through Ochsner. “At first, Carson was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which is water in the brain. Through pregnancy, that’s how maternal fetal and OB handled it,” said Erica.

Luckily, their team at Ochsner prepared them in terms of neurosurgery, making appointments prior to Carson’s birth and allowing Erica and Beau to meet with the doctors beforehand. It was only after Carson was born that tests were taken, sent off, and it was determined he had L1 syndrome.

As for Braylon, Erica did not at all expect for both of her sons to have L1, and she even described the process of Braylon’s diagnosis and treatment as “harder.”

Due to her previous high-risk pregnancy, Erica had an amniocentesis (or amnio) to determine if her next child would have a genetic disorder. “The rate of having two is like .0001, and he [Braylon] was actually fine until about 26 weeks,” shared Erica.

Every key marker the doctors could see for Carson—hydrocephalus and adducted thumbs—were not detectable for his younger brother. Erica said, “Right before the amnio results came back, I went in for a regular appointment and when she scanned me for an ultrasound, there were black dots basically in his brain. It’s fluid taking over, and as soon as I saw it, it was all those emotions again. Round two, here we go.”

Because each of her boys’ lives began immediately with the NICU, therapies, surgeries, and hospital visits, Erica said it was hard for her to think of everything else, specifically for Carson. But, by the time she had Braylon, she was able to “hold on” as she said and enjoy the baby. “Yes, they have a disability, but don’t forget to enjoy them being a child.”

And Erica greatly enjoys spending time with her children and getting to know them. They may have the same diagnosis, but they are polar opposites according to their mother. “Carson is like an old soul, he’s my laid-back kid. Braylon is not,” Erica laughed.

suit with the usual L1 surgeries, but Erica describes Braylon as her “curveball child.”

He spent the majority of his time from birth to three years-old in the hospital, having rare side effects different from his older brother. When it came to having her second kid, Erica said, “I had to let go of ‘We’re going to have a neurotypical child’ to ‘Here we go again!”

The Parents’ Role Many could look to Erica Lambert and see “supermom” for the way she’s advocated for her kids over the years. She’s helped raise funds for an adaptive playground so that her wheelchair-bound boys could play and even swing. She has also started a special needs Easter egg hunt that attaches helium balloons to the eggs to create a more accessible play for wheelchair-bound children.

But Erica doesn’t so much view herself as an advocate as she does simply a mother.

“I just do it because they’re my kids,” she explained. Since having a group of friends whose kids are all the same age as Carson and Braylon, it was hard for her as the only parent with disabled children to not recognize all they were barred from

participating in. She found those gaps and started from there.

Now, the accessible Easter egg hunt is actually integrated into the school system.

“I love it because it opened my eyes up a bit more. Not only do kids have their supports, they have transportation so it’s easier for kids in the whole parish to be able to go!

It’s also given me a chance to talk to the families that come out—to hear their story.

I know L1 because of my kids, but even having two, people would assume they’re the same and they’re not,” Erica shared.

Even aside from public advocacy, there is a lot that goes into their family life that many do not see. Braylon, for instance, has sensory meltdowns and so that adds a whole new factor onto what they do and where they go. Because Erica and Beau’s kids are 100% dependent on them, she said that people will see them out and about, but they don’t see the effort that goes into getting out. She also described the mental toll it takes on her parental mind, constantly being in a state of “What if?”

“You don’t want their diagnosis to dictate your life, but you’re constantly just thinking. And—what if something happens to me? Who’s going to take care of them?”

Erica said.

Another facet of daily life for the Lambert family is communicating with Carson and Braylon in unconventional ways as both boys are also nonverbal. According to Erica, “We’re very scheduled. I like a good schedule. They both smile and get excited.

If you make them mad, Carson will give you a side eye. Braylon will let you know, he’ll cry. One day, I’ll hear ‘Mom’ and until then, I’ll take the side eyes,” she smiled.

Carson and Braylon continue to have speech therapy as well as communication devices, but not all devices are inclusive to all disabilities. They aren’t completely catered to lower-functioning kids like Erica’s boys—an issue usually overlooked.

“My kids don’t isolate a finger to push, and so that makes it challenging,” Erica said.

The boys also have nystagmus, a condition that impairs their eye movements which also causes difficulty in utilizing devices.

Despite these challenges, Erica said her boys don’t really express frustration over

their occasional inability to get a point across. Erica and Beau have learned many ways to divide and conquer such as not pushing something the boys are just not interested in. And in so many ways, the reason the Lambert family works is the strong foundation provided by Erica and Beau.

“Carson is a daddy’s boy through and through,” Erica said. “He’s in a hunting lease where he [Beau] can take Carson, so that’s been their special thing to do.

Braylon’s a momma’s boy!”

Since the beginning, Beau has worked which allows Erica to stay home with the boys full-time. “We have a trust with each other. Because I wake up with the kids so early, evenings are his thing. He goes to everything, I just tell him what to wear,” Erica quipped. The couple are mentally preparing for their next journey in life to look a lot different from those of their friends, who are soon to become emptynesters with their children applying to college. While knowing they will never be empty-nesters, which is completely okay with Erica, she knows this transition from the boys’ childhood to adulthood will simply be—once again—unconventional and an adventure nonetheless.

Faith over Fear Erica leans heavily on her Christian faith to get her through difficult times, regularly attending and being involved with Mulberry Baptist Church and bible studying. She has a bright disposition and even humorous demeanor to her and the boys’ life. “They bring so much value to everyday life! They have a purpose. God put them here for a reason. And, look, I’m their mom and sometimes I’m like, ‘Good one, God!’ It’s a lot,” she shared.

At the end of the day, the boys are beyond diagnosis. They are Carson and Braylon.

They have likes and dislikes, and their own charming personalities. Erica gleamed about getting to know them as people the older they get, getting to hear their stories, and said if anyone does that for ten minutes without walking away with a smile, something’s wrong.

Erica also credited her boys to being her very inspiration. “They’ve never given up.

When I think it’s overwhelming, I think of them and they have done things that are so hard, and have not had an option, so if they can do it, I can do it.”

Preparing for the Future As of now, the Lamberts are in the process of deciding what route Carson’s future will take now that he is entering adulthood. “He is classified as a senior at H.L.Bourgeois living his best life, honestly!” Erica said.

Their team at Ochsner have been prepping them for this new process since Carson turned fifteen. He can either stay in school until he is twenty-two or move onto Terrebonne ARC with friends that have already gone before him. Erica said that Carson is looking forward to either choice because it’s a win-win regardless.

“We’re just trying to decide when to pull the trigger because it means that, for school days, the door is closed,” Erica explained. Braylon will also be starting at H.L. Bourgeois soon and the idea of having both of her boys in school together is tempting for Erica. “We’re going to think about it for a little bit longer and decide.”

So it goes in the life of the Lambert family, one decision after another, but it’s the love, the commitment to facing every new day with hope that proves anyone and everyone can make this life one worth living. Their boldness in the face of disability, adversity, the lack of local resources, and the need for them to self-advocate provides an inspiring message to the community and the world: that even if you don’t know what’s next, you’re showing up anyway. “Take my singing telegrams, for example. I think that just about sums up everything I want to do with this business,” said Tyrone.

“Someone could be in the worst mood in the world, but when they see someone coming up to their doorstep with such joy and happiness, they can’t help but smile.”

While Call Tyrone Enterprises has kept Tyrone extremely busy for the past ten years, it’s not the only way he is giving back to the community. When he isn't hustling around Houma, he can be found driving school buses for Terrebonne Parish Public School District, following in his late father’s footsteps.

and as a local school bus driver– is entirely inspired by the memory of his father, as he carries on the legacy as the third “Tyrone” in the Smith family. Although Tyrone is known for his lighthearted personality, it was a road of tragedy that led him to find his calling.

“My dad passed away when I was ten, and four short years later I lost my brother, too. I firmly believe that when bad things happen, you have a choice, and everyday, I wake up and choose to make them proud,” said Tyrone. “My dad was an entrepreneur, a skilled laborer, and a school bus driver just like me, and it makes me really happy to know that I'm working jobs that he was working, too. People say they see him in me and it's such a beautiful compliment.”

“But I could never have done it without him, and have only accomplished what I have with his memory in my heart. And I feel incredibly proud of myself for that too.”

For Tyrone, he has no plans to slow down anytime soon– already brainstorming new services, activities, and expansions to enrich the local community through his business, which he couldn't do without the community's unwavering support. "I have a podcast currently under construction where I'll interview locals. I just feel like there are so many beautiful people in this community doing great things that fly under the radar and need to be highlighted," said Tyrone. “This new venture, and my business as a whole, would not be possible without all the support and love Houma has given me. People saw what I wanted to do in 2016 and believed in me, and it has changed my life.”

As he continues to deliver joy in the form of a song, a laugh, or a service, Tyrone Smith is living proof that one thing remains certain: a little help—and a friendly smile— is just a phone call away. POV

A 2015 graduate of Nicholls State University and a Kraemer native, Grant has always been passionately rooted in our area. He obtained his Masters in Education in Educational Leadership in 2018, and has served as the Coordinator for Nicholls State University Graduate Studies ever since, helping to guide local students on their road to higher education. Grant was recently recognized as one of Lafourche Parish’s 40 under 40 by Leadership Lafourche.

Before the interviews even begin, listeners get a taste of something fun– beloved local musician and Cajun fiddler Waylon Thibodeaux collaborated to create the show’s opening theme song. The theme captures the soul of the show, letting listeners know they are about to hear

Now, 77 episodes into hosting the show, Grant continues to celebrate the resilience of our region by interviewing local leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs, conservationists, musicians, chefs, coaches, athletes, educators, and more who are making a difference everyday.

Storytelling is the heartbeat of the podcast, with every episode designed to feel like a genuine conversation rather than a formal interview. Even with some questions prepared in advance to guide the interviews, these episodes are much more centered around raw honesty and reflection between the guests, Grant, and the listeners.

“I'm born and raised in the area, a two-time Nicholls graduate, and have worked at the university for 10 years. This is my home and always will be,” said Grant. “I was really involved on campus and local community organizations during my time as a student, so when I finally graduated, I started thinking of other ways I could highlight the unique, incredible stories of those who live and work here.”

With that mission in mind, Grant officially launched his podcast, The Grant O Show, in June of 2024. The podcast is recorded at the Bayou Region Incubator in the heart of downtown Thibodaux, a space that represents innovation and collaboration while also keeping the show grounded in the region it was created to serve.

“It's all about honoring where we come from, amplifying real stories, and knowing that when it's time to dig deep, that's where growth begins,” said Grant. “I hope that by providing a platform for these conversations to take place, The Grant O Show is preserving our culture while passing down lessons about resilience and leadership to the next generation. I really want this show to encourage people to invest in their communities and remind them that impact starts locally.”

What truly sets Grant's podcast apart from the rest is the spark of inspiration that runs through every show. Listeners are encouraged to look inward and recognize their own potential and drive after hearing these stories, and Grant hopes that everyone involved– interviewees or listeners– will walk away with a new sense of purpose.

“Inspiration doesn’t always come from a big stage. Often, it comes from our small towns, our bayous and ecosystem, the classrooms, local businesses, and community in general,” said Grant.

“That’s what makes these stories powerful.

Listeners can see themselves in the conversations and walk away thinking, ‘If they can do it, so can I’.”

Whether you call it inspiration, the “it” factor, or spark, Grant sums up the energy of the Grant O Show in his professional catchphrase– It’s GO Time. “These aren't just words, they're a mindset. It's Go Time really represents those defining moments when life challenges you to dig deep, show up, and move forward, even when it’s uncomfortable,” explained Grant.

“Each guest is invited to reflect on what grounds and motivates them during those moments. It’s about lifting others up while never losing the personal touch that makes us special.”

As Grant approaches the 100th episode of the show, his podcast is not just changing the lives of listeners, but Grant's own life as well. “Starting the podcast has reinforced the importance of listening more than speaking. Each conversation has challenged me to grow personally, professionally, and spiritually,” said Grant.

“I’ve learned that leadership often comes from creating space for others to share their stories and be seen. My hope is that The Grant O Show continues to serve as a source of motivation for anyone who needs a reminder that their story matters.”

WALK INTO A HEALTHIER NEW YEAR Who knew the age-old method of moving our bodies from one space to another would be the newest fitness trend?

Walking is one of the most effective tools for weight loss. It's free; you can walk anywhere; and just need a good pair of walking shoes and willpower.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 150 minutes of physical activity each week, 5 days a week for adults. You can meet CDC guidelines with 30-minute walks.

Here are a few different walking methods to try: Post-meal Walks Walking after meals can aid digestion and reduce bloating—thus the somewhat impolite label it's earned.

A brisk 15- to 30-minute walk within an hour after finishing your meal also supports blood sugar control. Evening activity can also reduce stress and help you sleep better.

Mindful or Intuitive Walks Heading outside with no planned route or destination and just following your intuition can free the mind, reduce cortisol and stress, and improve your mood. Observe your surroundings.

Listen to sounds of nature. Enjoy sun on your face.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that sedentary behaviors are a leading cause of disease and disability.

If you work at a computer or remain seated most of the day, health experts recommend that you get up every 30 to 60 minutes and move for 5 minutes.

That's the equivalent of two songs with a couple of dance moves thrown in.

Also known as interval walking training (IWT), this fitness technique rotates between three minutes of higher intensity and three minutes of lower-intensity walking throughout a 30-minute walk. Studies from Japanese researchers found that it can lead to lower blood pressure, stronger thigh muscles and better aerobic capacity.

100 NEW YEARS AGO:

THE TIMES THEY’VE BEEN A-CHANGIN’ “Should auld acquaintance be forgot / and never brought to mind...” It was drunken Scottish poet Robert Burns who first committed the lines of that drunken song to paper in 1788 at a moment when it was likely difficult for him to bring anything to mind.

For us in PoV country, however, it should not be enough to forget auld acquaintance and simply raise a glass for old times’ sake. Here, remembering the Past is critical. As Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan sings, “Come gather 'round people / Wherever you roam / And admit that the waters/ Around you have grown…” Where are those lines more ironically meaningful than PoV country where waters around us are growing, where coastal land is lost faster than any other place on Earth? When land goes, so go people, and then go history and remembrance. So, let’s never let auld acquaintance be forgot! Here’s a look back through the gaze of newspaper coverage at New Year’s Day 1926—100 years ago—to reflect on how much the times they’ve been a-changin’.

NATIONAL. In 1926, the U.S. was six years into Prohibition and less than a decade removed from both World War I and the Spanish Flu pandemic. On New Year’s Day, three thousand men, women, and children visited the White House to shake hands with President Coolidge.

Eight thousand visited South Florida to watch Red Grange and the Chicago Bears beat the Tampa Cardinals. Fifty-five thousand watched Alabama beat Washington 20-19 at Rose Bowl Stadium—the first time a team from the South defeated a West Coast team for the national championship. In D.C., all Congressmen and Senators from Louisiana were Democrats, some in office since 1912; of eight Congressmen, seven would be re-elected later in 1926 without opposition. The Radio Corporation of America (RCA) rebroadcast music from a London club on New Year’s Eve, transmitting it to stations around the country, including one in Thibodaux, Louisiana. A multitude of foreign nations expressed their good will toward the U.S. on the first day of the new year: Briande of France declared eternal gratefulness to the American people; Shidihara of Japan declared “heartiest felicitations;” Machado of Cuba acknowledged the debt his people owed for protection under their “colossal neighbor;” Chiari of Panama welcomed American development of his country’s resources; Mussolini of Italy quoted Walt Whitman and reminded U.S. readers how vitally important Italians were in the development of early America.

STATE. If you visited the State Capitol, you would likely have seen Thibodaux Representative Harvey Peltier, Sr., at work but not yet Huey P. Long. Tulane scientist Dr. Aldo Castellani, having discovered that the tsetse fly causes African sleeping sickness, entreated the Rockefeller Foundation to endow a School of Tropical Medicine in Louisiana. In college football, 1925 seasons wrapped up: the LSU Tigers went 5-3-1, having held their first ever homecoming game, and the Tulane Green Wave shut-out five opponents en route to a 9-0-1 record. USDA biologist Vernon Bailey visited coastal Louisiana to study muskrat ecology, and on one day in early January he described observing “millions of ducks and geese” along the coast.

LOCAL. No wonder Bailey visited: Terrebonne Parish by 1926 led the nation in muskrat pelt exports—a $1.5 million industry. In addition to trapping, PoV country led the nation in fisheries, namely oyster and dried shrimp exports. In the past month, weather was colder and wetter than average and not without incident. An early December freeze damaged the sugarcane crop; this, together with the outbreak of mosaic disease, would cause later in the year one of the region’s largest mills, that at Laurel Valley, to cease grinding forever. A cyclone struck Kraemer in the week prior to New Year’s, killing three from a single family; the father was out since early morning attending muskrat traps; with no road, both an attending physician and three coffins were ferried by boat from Thibodaux. In better news, for a 10-cents cheap seat at the Grand Theater in Thibodaux, you could see the new silent film, What Fools Men, starring a cast of actors that auld acquaintance forgot; an appropriate New Year’s show, the movie’s protagonist raised many glasses for old times’ as well as several other sakes in the plot; the film was so insignificant that no copies were archived, and it has been officially designated a “lost film.”

FILLING THE COLUMNS. Local newspapers from 100 years ago were peculiar publications—more like popular magazines than newspapers. Instead of news as we know it today, you’d find columns of feelgood writings, including senseless poetry, like this New Year’s entry: “If Paw had his way / The winters would be hot / And in the summertime / The snow would be not.” And you’d find longer forms, like the serialized story “Carrie’s Curiosity,” by Florence Hallowell, to which I award a G rating despite its suggestive title. You can find cute picayunes like “Yes, my husband is the man of my dreams, but it’s because he’s never home,” as well as more pointed ones, like a political editorial supposedly written by a monkey that scorns his kindred primates: “We never invented gun powder, submarines, poison gas, or TNT. We never butchered or starved 20 million of our kind to humor the whims of a king or kaiser.”

You’d be baited by health care columns with unsubstantiated claims, like “Distilled water is a protoplasmic poison due to the absence of organic contaminants.” (Think about that for a second.) A different water story appears nearby in an advertisement for Pond’s Extract, complete with frogs in pharmacological poses compounding such organic contaminants. And forget the Spanish Flu: A multitude of patent medicine advertisements appearing with regularity on nearly every page of 100-year-old local newspapers suggests a different epidemic: “Relieved overnight / Beecham Pills / For headache and constipation.” “Nujol makes you a new man by relieving constipation.”

“In bed for four months and now a new man / Tanlac Laxative Syrup.” “Stop a cold in one day / Bromo Quinines Laxative Tablets.” “California Fig Syrup / For kidney, liver, bowels, colds, headaches, fevers, and habitual constipation.” Apparently, this epidemic affected multiple organ systems that even modern medicine after 100 years has failed to connect.

Certainly, the times have a-changed over the past century. But if you’re looking for auld re- acquaintance, better to talk to your grandand great-grandparents than to depend on local newspapers, where, unfortunately, there’s not much news. But, as an auld saying goes, “No news is good news.” After 100 years, though, we can say “No news is at least not fake news.” POV

Terrebonne Parish 4H Auction returns for the first time in 10 years! Children in the Terrebonne 4H program will participate in showing roughly 20 market animals for sale (non-breeding)– including steers, hogs, lambs, goats, and chickens.
