Federated Farmers Dairy chairman Andrew Hoggard says each farmer must know how much he or she is paying per kgMS to prop up the Australian business, which includes 10 manufacturing sites.

He says farmers know Fonterra has to pay an attractive milk price in Australia to secure supply but the investment is not paying dividends now.

His comments come as Fonterra shareholders learnt that Australian suppliers are being paid more than $1 extra for every kgMS supplied to the co-op this season.

The co-op last month announced an opening average farmgate milk price of $6.30/kgMS for its Aus-

tralian suppliers, who don’t own shares in the co-op. In May Fonterra announced an opening forecast price of $5.25/kgMS for its New Zealand farmer shareholders.

Fonterra is also forecasting an average closing farmgate milk price range of $6-$6.83/kgMS for Australian suppliers this season.

Fonterra Australia national milk supply manager Matt Watt told Dairy News the Australian milk price is weighted towards the domestic market, which is intensely competitive, driving milk prices higher as processors compete to retain supply.

“In addition, unlike the New Zealand market – where almost 95% of milk is destined for export where global volatility is a defining factor – only around 60% of Fonterra Australia’s milk goes to the export market, meaning it is less exposed to global commodity prices,” Watt says.

returns being generated in kgMS. “Fonterra needs to get more transparent about its Australian business with shareholders. We go out and get overseas milk pools; we know you’ve got to pay what you have to pay to get milk but let’s see some returns from that.”

Fonterra Australia says its opening price and forecast closing range are more cautious than recent seasons.

The global environment remains particularly volatile, it says.

“Since December we have seen commodity prices decrease due to increased global production and a resulting oversupply of dairy commodities. This has coincided with weakening demand which has had some impact locally.

“Although global conditions are challenging, the longer term fundamentals remain positive for Fonterra, with the planned Beingmate joint venture partnership with our Darnum site.”

Murray Goulburn last month also announced an opening forecast price of $6.30/kgMS. If MG suppliers receive total farmgate returns in excess of A$6.00/kgMS this year, it will be a record third consecutive year the payout has touched A$6/ kgMS. Hoggard says most farmers know Fonterra has to act like a corporate in Australia, much like Open Country Dairy and Synlait in NZ. “We know Fonterra is not a price setter and has to match competitors otherwise we don’t secure supply. Hoggard says farmers know their feed costs and cost of interest for every kgMS. Likewise they should know how much they are putting into the Australian business and the

silver lining for dairy farmers rattled by the eighth straight drop in the Global Dairy Trade price index.

However, ASB economist Nathan Penny says while the falling dollar has offset much of the drop, dairy prices need to start coming back soon.

ASB has dropped its forecast payout for this season from $5.70/kgMS to $5/kgMS as last week’s GDT recorded a 5.9% drop in the index.

Worryingly, the biggest fall was recorded by whole milk powder; the key commodity slumped

10.8% to US$2054/metric tonne. Skim milk powder is down 5.8% to US1875/MT. Penny says while a drop was expected, the magnitude of price falls in WMP and SMP prices were surprising.

He says the exchange rate is expected to drop further and the bank is also forecasting more interest rates cuts by the Reserve Bank; this should lead to lower interest rates for farmers borrowing money.

“There has been a chunky fall in the exchange

rate and this has offset much of weakness in price,” he told Dairy News. “But we still need prices to recover to get to $5/kgMS.” Federated Farmers Dairy chairman Andrew Hoggard says the mood among Federated Farmers delegates at their annual conference was one of disappointment. Farmers were shocked by the sharp fall in WMP price.

“We were thinking the prices may have hit rock bottom in recent weeks so the 10% drop in WMP prices is shocking.”

Andrew Hoggard has leapt to the defence of Fonterra, saying much of the criticism against them is misguided.

But speaking to dairy farmers at the federation’s annual conference in Wellington, Hoggard also called on Fonterra to improve its communications with farmers. The co-op needs better internal two-way communication – from the board to farmer shareholders and vice versa, he says.

“The slogans and catchphrases need to go and be replaced with plain English. As a farmer told me the other day, if he heard about ‘turning the wheel’ just one more time

he was going to shove that wheel where the ‘sun don’t shine’. The Shareholders’ Council is vital for that communication, and it needs to ensure the board is in touch with farmer concerns and that co-op values are maintained.”

Hoggard says some people looking at the GDT auction itself believe that somehow it is the cause of all this drama. But, he says, the GDT is simply the messenger, and the message is that global supply is greater than global demand.

“Do we execute the messenger simply because we don’t like the message?

I believe that was standard practice in the days of ancient Rome.”

He is also concerned about criticism of TAF – claims that it’s to blame for everything and isn’t working.

“Again I don’t think so.

TAF’s purpose was to sort out redemption risk and it’s succeeding in doing that. Blaming TAF comes down to some confusion between Fonterra’s strategy and Fonterra’s

structure. It is true that Fonterra’s share of milk processed in New Zealand has fallen, but in pure quantity Fonterra is still processing more milk than ever before.

“The main things to remember are that TAF didn’t cause the Chinese to over-purchase, TAF didn’t cause the world to have generally good growing conditions, TAF didn’t

cause Vladimir Putin to ban the import of European dairy products into Russia, nor did it cause ISIS to emerge in the Middle East. And it didn’t cause Ebola.”

FEDERATED FARMERS Dairy chairman Andrew Hoggard says it seems that when someone feels they need media attention they dredge up the issue of the price of milk in supermarkets.

His comments follow complaints by Labour’s David Shearer that the price of milk in New Zealand supermarkets is higher than overseas.

But Hoggard says if you look at the average price of milk over the last five years, there has been little change in the price.

“David Shearer has picked two points on the graph that tells the story he wants to tell, not what the long run average has been.

“The fact is the Fonterra side of it is transparent.

Overseas milk is being used as a loss leader in supermarkets, whereas that has not been the case in NZ. They have probably used other things as loss leaders and maybe they use milk as their profit maker but that’s the supermarkets’ business.”

Hoggard says when this issue blew up last time, professor Jacqueline Rowarth quoted figures showing that in the early 1900’s the average person spent a big chunk of their income on food. But through the last century that percentage has continued to decline and, of course, entertainment expenses have gone up.

“On the issue of the price of milk in supermarkets, anyone with half a brain can do the maths and see what the farmers are doing. They are only getting a small portion of that,” he says.

backwards to the 1950s if raw milk has to be delivered to homes instead of to collection points in the cities, says Raw Milk Producers Association of NZ chairman Ray Ridings.

“We are right behind the Government in getting a new form of (raw milk) regulation in and the majority of the new policy is quite workable,” he told Dairy News. “But the total banning of collection depots for some parts of the country will make it impossible for some people to get access to milk.

“For a large part of the country, door to door delivery will be quite achievable but for our busy cities, going back 50 years with door to door delivery with current traffic issues will make it very difficult.

“We don’t want to be adding more vehicles to the roads. With a lot of city folk, everyone is away for the day so when can the

milk be delivered safely?”

A large percentage of current sales by the association’s 40-odd members are in cities, mainly Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. He says he understands the Government’s concern about sales in retail outlets but if the Government had come back to them they could have offered solutions. There are collection depots on private properties and ways of making them secure etc, to get away from the retail aspect.

Riding says they are waiting to see the fine detail still being written.

Food Safety Minister Jo Goodhew announced the new policies and gave a broad outline mid-June.

“The way the minister has written the Cabinet paper the policies appear non-negotiable,” he says.

The association wants discussions with MPI on achieving the best policy possible.”

He believes some farmers will get out of raw milk sales because of extra costs. Individual mem-

bers are looking at how to work with the regulations but more clarification is needed from a farm and customer point of view.

The 100% recording provision for raw milk sales will be virtually impossible for one type of sale – the vending machine. “What other food group requires 100% recording of all sales and for those records to be kept for four years?” Ridings asks. A recent serious listeria outbreak in herbs was handled by just a general recall.

For pre-ordered sales of raw milk most farmers will have 100% recording, but for vending machines, depending on their location in, say, tourist type areas or on main roads, the possibility of recording all sales could vary from 50% to 99%.

“There are a few little areas but on the whole a lot of the policy will be workable. But the amount of raw milk available when it comes into effect will probably be reduced because some farmers may decide the extra expense

to comply isn’t worth it at this stage of their farming career or for other reasons.

“We want to be treated like other foods but we see some aspects of the legislation as being quite different from other foods – like the 100% recording.”

They also want improved reporting of illnesses by health boards in communicable diseases.

A large percentage of illness attributed to raw milk was caused by something else, Ridings believes. In Timaru in March 2014 seven illnesses from campylobacter were blamed on raw milk yet there were 60 other campylobacter illnesses in the same period. The raw milk tested negative all the way through.

“That is just one example; whenever raw milk is involved, it gets the blame.

It is a bit like blaming all Ford motor vehicles for every crash involving a Ford motor vehicle,” he says. Health board misreporting builds the ‘evidence’ against raw milk.

We want to be able to prove raw milk is not the demon it is made out to be.”

Some aspects in the technical details released by the minister are already applicable to all farms, including standard dairy regulations.

The new policies also say the dairy farmers will be exempt a regulated management plan (RMP) for the raw milk side of the business and instead follow a regulation control system (RCS). However Riding argues that good operators should be rewarded by being allowed to operate under an RMP which has fewer inspections and is less prescriptive.

But often MPI comes down a lot stricter.

name, address, phone number and how many litres and what time it was and the date every time they buy some. That puts us in the same sort of realm as buying gunpowder or restricted drugs.”

But Houston says more policy information is needed before they know where they stand.

Event delegates were ‘Riding the wave’.

This year the 500-or-so farmers and industry staff at Lincoln late last month were looking for ‘Upside’ in a world of weak prices and growing regulation.

“The wave broke and we’ve been thrown off our surfboards and unfortunately, instead of a nice soft landing on a sandy beach, it feels like we’ve been thrown onto the rocks, battered and bruised,” said event organising committee chairman Steve Booker, opening the conference and recalling the previous year’s theme.

“What a difference a year makes.”

Booker noted the two main factors in the crash landing, the commodity cycle and weather, are beyond farmers’ influence so his focus, and that of the conference, was on what can be controlled.

“If it grows, moos, or moves, measure it. You cannot manage what you don’t measure,” he said, a comment echoed several times by speakers throughout the three-day event.

“You’ll hear new information, new ideas, make new friendships and find

new motivation to tackle the challenges ahead. Don’t waste the opportunity,” he urged delegates.

Dairy NZ chief executive Tim Mackle described the tough times as “an opportunity to reset our competiveness”.

“Trite as that may sound to you who are going through it, that’s the reality,” he said, introducing SIDE’s opening keynote speaker, Sir Ray Avery.

Avery’s rags-to-riches and global philanthropy story lauded New Zealanders’ ‘can-do’ attitude and told delegates the best inventions come from people like them.

“None of the things I’ve achieved on the world stage would have happened if I hadn’t come to New Zealand.”

He also emphasised the need to plan, particularly in the face of adversity, a theme picked up by fellow SIDE keynote speaker Mike Allsop.

“I build a really strong plan so that when I’m overwhelmed – and I know I will be at some point – I just stick to the plan and take the next step,” said the Everest mountaineer, Air NZ pilot and “triple seven” marathon runner.

Concluding keynote speaker Ed Timmings, of Juggler Health, added a wellbeing perspective to the

planning message.

“The best thing is to make sure you have a plan. If you have a plan, you’re going to be okay. If you don’t have a plan, you’re stressed.”

Several of the event’s many workshops focussed on wellbeing, such as one presented by DairyNZ’s Dana Carver who warned that excessive and/ or prolonged stress leads to burnout.

“As farmers we focus on the sustainability of our land, machinery, stock and business, but what about our sustainability as people? The pressures of farming are not small,” she noted, before outlining tools to manage stress.

Closing the conference, SIDE chairman Rob Wilson recalled TV3 newsman Mike McRoberts’ keynote address – “we found his industry is more in the cow poo than our own” – and leading lawyer Mai Chen’s presentation on superdiversity which spelled out why dairying needs to adapt to and embrace cultural diversity.

FEED TO YIELD PRACTICE THROWN INTO DOUBT DAIRYNZ IS challenging the common practice of feeding more to higher yielding cows.

In a broad ranging SIDE address on advancing management through technology, Callum Eastwood and Brian Dela Rue said recent modelling and a

feeding trial show “no more profit” from feeding higher yielding cows more than when the whole herd was fed the same amount.

“We couldn’t find evidence that would justify the additional cost of the [variable rate in-shed] feed system,”

Dela Rue told a workshop audience.

His comments were based on a DairyNZ and MPI Sustainable Farming Fund study which found 58% of farms with in-shed feeding systems feed to yield at some point in the season. They also looked

at a review of scientific studies of individualised feeding by Hills et al published in the Journal of Dairy Science this year, and results from a four week field trial.

“There was no observed effect on milk production, liveweight or body condition score.”

Freeman was in good shape, but as DairyNZ developer Dana Carver highlighted in a workshop at the event, that’s not so for many in the industry. Pitstop results in 2011-2013 found 41% of farmers had high cholesterol, 57% of male farmers had high blood pressure and 32% reported pain interfering with work.

farmer Murray Moxham considers himself lucky to have got off relatively lightly during the recent floods that struck the lower North Island.

At their height large parts of his farm were under water, the floods lapping the entrance to his cowshed which was cut off from the main farm. All he and his family could do was wait for the water to recede.

“The good thing was there was no silt and the water was clean. Our biggest stress was whether the grass was going to die or not but it appears we have got away with it. The cowshed filled to within one inch of the electric motors, then it receded.”

The other issue for the Moxhams was finding extra grazing, not easy because they are organic

and the cows could only go on organic land. By drying off a few cows they were winter milking on another small organic farm they own and managed to cope.

The cows are now back and are being grazed on dry areas.

Moxham says they lost none of their precious supplementary feed, stored on high ground as a precaution against a flood. All the sheds and houses apart from the main cowshed are on high ground.

The stopbank that burst and caused most of the flooding has now been repaired and water from some low lying areas has been pumped out.

Moxham vividly recalls having only a few minutes at the height of the flood to get the cows to high ground early in the morning – very stressful. He is full of praise for the efforts of Fonterra, the regional council and others who offered assistance.

it seems to have dried out and is running ok.”

Despite the problems of the last week Moxham says he feels lucky, especially when he looks at the devastation in Whanganui.

DAIRY FARMS hit by recent floods in the lower North

Island are slowly drying out according to DairyNZ. The regional leader for the area, James Muwunganirwa, told Dairy News there are regional pockets still with problems, but by and large the water is seeping away. The main damage appears to have been to fences and races.

“The water that was sitting on the pasture was clean so there wasn’t a lot of silt. The water hasn’t been on the pasture for a long time so there won’t be a great need for pasture renovation in those areas. The main challenge will be grazing those pastures that are wet.”

Muwunganirwa says farmers will have be careful when grazing wet pastures to limit pugging damage.

Meanwhile Federated Farmers Dairy chairman Andrew Hoggard who lives in the region says some farms in Manawatu and Rangitikei have been badly damaged. Some have lost most of their supplementary feed. The challenge for some will be with calving not far away.

“All the Federated Farmers provincial presidents have been meeting and organising help for farmers. Fonterra’s rapid response team has worked very well assisting their shareholders and DairyNZ has been out there giving feed budgeting advice.”

Hoggard says it hasn’t been easy with communications down and just getting information in to work out who needs help and how urgently. His experience suggests farmers are often on their own for the first days until help arrives, unless it is critical, like cows needing to be moved from floodwaters.

Hoggard says the mission can be trying to prioritise who needs help first.

More fodder beet safer than less ANDREW SWALLOW

DAIRYNZ ADVICE to limit dairy

cows to 8kgDM/head/day of fodder beet is “right in the danger zone” a leading researcher into the crop’s use is warning.

Lincoln University’s Jim Gibbs says limiting intake at that level is highly dangerous because if cows gain access to much more than that, they will eat enough to “crash” the rumen through acidosis.

“It will kill cows. I can’t put it more plainly than that,” he told Dairy News.

A much safer approach is to transition cows to a point where they are at or close to ad-lib intakes of fodder beet.

Then, should a breakout or serious misallocation of feed occur for whatever reason, cows won’t eat much more than they’ve been used to.

“At 8kg drymatter a day if they get out they’ll easily eat 12kg but if they’re already eating 12kg/day it’s not a problem,” he explains.

Last week Gibbs presented a paper at the New Zealand Society of Animal Production conference in Dunedin showing once cattle are fully transitioned, ad-lib

fodder beet results in a higher rumen pH than ad-lib winter grass.

That finding counters the conventional wisdom that high starch content of beet results in low rumen pH – even acidosis.

A possible explanation is ad-lib feeding encourages more even intake throughout the day and consequently less variation in rumen pH, Gibbs and his co-author Prendergast suggest in the NZSAP paper.

They also found ad-lib beet produced nearly 25% more rumen microbial protein per kgDM eaten, which could explain why mobs of cattle on beet do better than would be expected from their crude protein intake alone, and better than on grass despite its higher crude protein, he says.

The ruminal urea concentration was also higher on beet compared to grass, suggesting cattle on beet recycle more urea through the rumen rather than excreting it.

That has positive environmental implications for stock grazing fodder beet, says Gibbs.

“The amount of nitrogen intake required for the liveweight gains we’re achieving is relatively restricted and the

nitrogen excretion is a positive because they are so efficient at using it.”

While the NZSAP paper is based on recent work with steers, Gibbs says there’s no reason why the rumen environment in cows should be any different.

“We have previous data with dry cows, pregnant cows, steers. There’s no difference.”

spread on-farm success with high beet intakes, Gibbs says he was left bemused

by DairyNZ’s June 2 advisory warning against ad-lib beet feeding and to limit intake to 8kgDM/ha/day plus 4-5kgDM/ day of other feed.

In the advisory, DairyNZ senior scientist Gary Waghorn said feeding over 70% fodder beet “could kill some of your cows.”

“Needless to say, my phone’s been running red hot since that went out,”

Gibbs said.

DairyNZ’s senior scientist in the feed and farm systems group, Dawn Dalley, defended the 70% recommendation, arguing that where cows are only on beet for 50-60 days over winter, the 30 days required to safely transition cows to an ad-lib regime is too long.

“It comes down to your attention to detail in setting up for winter. We’ve had cows wintered on a 70:30 diet at Ashley Dene [near Lincoln] now for four years with no issues; no breakouts and we’re only using standard electric fencing.”

The trial her colleagues Waghorn and Kay cited was designed to investigate nitrogen metabolism on beet and other feeds and only involved eight cows per treatment. The cows that crashed at 85% beet were transitioned over 20 days and “probably should have been transitioned for longer,” Dalley added, acknowledging there are many experienced fodder beet users succeeding with ad-lib regimes.

But Gibbs says the need for such long transitions and high supplement rates is not supported by the experimentary data or hundreds of farms experience which shows a 14-day transition is adequate.

executive Tim Mackle says the current downturn in the dairy industry is different from others in the past.

During the last downturn New Zealand’s two biggest export competitors – the EU and US in particular – were hampered by credit and investment issues and a lack of confidence caused by the global financial crisis, Mackle says. Dairy feed prices were then high, effectively preventing them from entering the international market.

“This time they have lower oil prices, lower feed costs and they don’t have the issues they were dealing with post GFC so they are in a stronger position and they have aspirations to export.

Things are different this time so it will, potentially, take longer for this to clear.”

Mackle says given the present economic climate the dairy industry needs to focus more on building resilient systems, the hallmark of NZ’s success over many years. The industry has always been subject to volatility but the peaks now are higher and the troughs deeper.

NZ farmers, who get

no subsidies – unlike those in other countries – are very competitive.

“But we have to use the opportunities ahead of us right now to reset that competitiveness and resilience in our system.

“Key areas are, first, stewardship of the environment, which includes animal welfare, and making sure conditions for staff are in line with best practice.

Health and safety is part of this.

“Then there is the farming system itself: farmers need to make sure theirs is resilient.

There is a risk that variable costs can end up being fixed costs.”

Mackle is urging farmers to focus their business acumen on ensuring they are financially sound. The present crisis provides an opportunity for farmers to examine their farm systems and themselves.

Getting the right people into agriculture at all levels is a big challenge, he says, but the industry seems to have a comprehensive plan. For example DairyNZ is spending $800,000 a year into its scholarship programme.

Other programmes exist to get people into the industry; things have come a long way in the last five years, Mackle says.

Financially some

dairy farmers have got carried away in recent years with the high milk prices and over-extended themselves.

“The old adage is that production is vanity, profit is sanity. That is

a trap we have to watch and avoid, but no doubt some people have done well out of putting marginal feed into the system when prices are high.

“The key thing they

have done is, first, grown and harvested as much grass as they could, then they’ve put feed into the system strategically at the right price and time to get the maximum response,” Mackle says.

Corporate farmer Trevor Hamilton believes Fonterra farmers would be better served by a smaller group of people.

“If Fonterra is going to invest in global companies, then unless those companies intrinsically produce a rate of return they will simply never pay a dividend.

“We are reading in farming papers that not only Fonterra shareholders

but also the investors have got brassed off with the return and the way the Fonterra share is down to its current value of about $4.60.”

Hamilton says there’s a lot of pressure on Fonterra to get the value added part of its business performing.

DESPITE SOME spring

health issues and the falling milk price, Webster Farms, the Hauraki Plains P3 Focus Farm, increased production by 10,617kgMS in its first year as a focus farm.

But the 212,285kgMS from their 620-cow herd was still below their target of 233,000kgMS because of those issues. But despite “hurting” from the milk price, Michael and Megan Webster were happy with a number of pluses from their first of three years as

the P3 Focus Farm.

They saved $37,000 on feed, successfully introduced chicory which helped with a regrassing programme and “nailed” residuals on their 217ha (eff) farm at Ngatea.

The increased monitoring, record keeping and budgeting as part of being a focus farm helped them know their farm business much better, they said.

Both agree grass and feed was the highlight including the success of chicory (Dairy News, June 23).

“We also have a much greater understanding of our business – where we are and where we are

heading,” Michael says.

As part of being a focus farm, advisers asked them to model results on an “average” payout of $6/ kgMS. Under this scenario they would have boosted profit by $100/ha in their first focus farm year.

Webster Farms is owned by parents Richard and Gillian Webster, and Michael and Megan, who are also responsible for overall operations as contract milkers. The farm is operated as two neighbouring farms with a 26-aside herringbone and the other a 32-bail rotary.

“It is better to know what you are facing in the next two years than ‘guestimating’ your way through,” says Megan.

They are stripping budgets and have spoken to the bank, which is supportive of their strategy.

It has several projects, run with DairyNZ. Michael told a June field day the spring health issues were metabolic issues. No one could exactly diagnose it but it was a vicious circle where the cows were low in energy and became ketotic. The first half of calving the cows was fine, but in the second half they went through calving and colostrums, but health issues started when the cows reached the milking herd. It hadn’t happened before on the farm.

A meeting was called with the vets. “They couldn’t put their finger on it and say exactly what went wrong,” says Megan.

“So we have come up with a plan to cover all the bases.”

Michael says mineral levels including magnesium were low but that did not appear to be the full explanation. In the coming season they will make sure everything is 10/10 – searching for sick animals, magnesium dusting and putting it in the water supply.

“We have done liver biopsies before drying off and made sure the mineral levels are up to scratch.

We will also do another round of blood tests leading into calving to make sure the gap isn’t opening up. We will be quite pedantic about it because it is hard to put our finger on exactly what was happening.”

Working through the figures, Megan said production was 212,285kgMS against a target of 233,000kgMS. Milk production to May 31 was 978kgMS/ha. On top of health issues, the dry period over January and February took its toll. “We were actually going really well and it took a nosedive and from then on it was hold on for as long as we can – it felt like that,” Megan said. Total gross income was $1.244m compared to $1.66m in 2014; they had a budgeted profit of $1.37m. “So the payout

hurt us and it is obviously hurting everybody,” Megan said.

Overall income was $5.86/kgMS compared to $7.84/kgMS in 2014. Gross profit did not include cost of stock but included dairy sales, dairy purchases and other farm revenue like dividends and milk check.

They had early culls and stronger-than-anticipated prices at the works. They were under budget in milk solids/ha and the dividend income was 15c, not the 20c budgeted for. “It wasn’t super pretty this year and I don’t think it’s going to be super pretty next year.”

Operating expenses at $892,000 were $45,000 less than 2014. However they were over the budget of $855,000 because grazing fees were higher than originally budgeted and unexpected vehicle expenses.

Onfarm Michael said there was focus on pas-

ture and pasture utilisation. “We feel we have made good strides in this area. We have used chicory for the first time this year planting 20ha; this has provided good yields over the summer. It has also been a good tool for our regrassing programme. So we will definitely continue this next year.”

They had a 71% six week in-calf rate and a 10% empty rate. There was minimal intervention due to the milk price.

The heifers returned home in very good condition but this time last year the young stock were 55kg underweight. They did “soul searching”, found a new grazier and put a rigid plan in place and they are “over the moon” with how they look at the moment.

Megan said it was a lesson learnt because they thought they had done their homework with the grazier and had a plan in place.

Farmers happy to supply co-op without shares FONTERRA SUBSIDIARY MyMilk says it con-

tinues to attract interest from new suppliers.

MyMilk enables farmers to supply the co-op company for up to five years without having to buy shares; normally Fonterra suppliers need one share for every kgMS supplied to the co-op.

MyMilk says a prominent Mid-Canterbury farmer has become its latest supplier.

Tom Mason is chief executive and major shareholder of Terracostosa Ltd, which owns three farms in the region. Terracostosa recently bought two more Central Canterbury properties, and has shifted the production from one of these to MyMilk.

Mason is quoted as saying MyMilk is “meets the needs of the dairy sector, giving farmers an additional option other than supplying their milk elsewhere.

important consideration. MyMilk gives farmers a fair milk price, plus all the benefits of being aligned to the co-op, without having to commit to buying shares from day one.”

Terracostosa milks 3000 cows on its Mid Canterbury farms. After recently buying two more adjoining farms, in Greenpark, Central Canterbury, milking an extra 700 cows, Mason says contracting to MyMilk to supply the milk from one of the Greenpark properties was a logical decision.

“On the heavier soils

at Greenpark we want to milk smaller Jersey cows, and the payment system of the company the farm was supplying would not give us the best returns for that milk.”

Returns for MyMilk suppliers are tied to what Fonterra pays its own supplier-shareholders, within 15% below Fonterra’s price, without the need for farmers to buy shares in the co-operative.

MyMilk supply is limited to five years, during which farmers have the option to become Fonterra shareholders and supply in the conventional way.

Says Mason, “We intend to eventually combine the MyMilk farm with the neighbouring farm, at which point we will share up to take the milk from both to Fonterra.”

MyMilk chief executive Richard Allen says that since the company started in December it is ahead of supply projections for 2015-16.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland farms that do not already supply Fonterra are able to apply for one-year MyMilk supply contracts, renewable for a maximum of five years.

HOLSTEIN FRIESIAN New Zealand has elected Te Awamutu breeder Wendy Harker as its first woman president.

Harker takes the reins from Doug Courtman; she served six years as a council member and is the first woman to head the association in 105 years.

With husband David, Harker milks their Westell herd under Mount Kakepuku; their 470-strong herd is 90% registered with Holstein Friesian NZ. A keen breeder, she is eager to continue to promote the Holstein Friesian breed within the NZ dairy industry.

“The Holstein Friesian cow is the most versatile breed with the largest, best and most reliable genetic pool in the world,” she says.

“You can breed a Holstein Friesian cow to suit all types of farming systems in NZ and we need the straight bred Holstein Friesian cow for profitable dairy farming in NZ.” As well as running the farm, Harker is kept busy as an executive member of the Waikato A&P Show, senior Holstein Friesian and Milking Shorthorn Judge and Calf Club Judge.

She is also a certified Traits other than Production (TOP) inspector and classifier for Holstein Friesian New Zealand, Harker represents Holstein Friesian NZ at the NZ Dairy Breeds Federation.

She hopes to continue the example of great leadership that Courtman and the previous presidents have set.

“The board is a team effort and I see it as my job to make sure that we make the best use of those skills available,” she says.

Harker believes the strength of the dairy industry lies with young breeders and farmers coming through the ranks.

“I enjoy seeing the passion and enthusiasm of the young breeders in the show ring and starting their farming business; they are the future of our organisation.”

At the dairy industry level, Harker actively keeps pace with the animal evaluation system.

It is important to ensure our TOP and classification systems are functioning well and future research supports accurate reliable information about our breed,” Harker says.

Subclinical Ketosis Subclinical ketosis, where a cow may not be visibly sick but has reduced energy levels at transition, is a major problem.

Research shows more than 20% of cattle are affected. This is because, around calving, the cow’s nutrition is finely balanced and she is on a knife edge between clinical disease and reduced performance.

Unlike us the cow depends mainly on fatty acid metabolism for energy and, if there is not enough energy supplied in the diet, body fats are utilised and converted to energy and to waste products. Most of this process is done in the liver but this system is easily overloaded and when that happens there is a build-up of ketone bodies, urea and free radicals, all of which have toxic effects on the body.

This may manifest itself as clinical ketosis but, with the subclinical condition, the cow simply produces less to compensate for the energy drain. The result of this is not only a reduction of milk in the vat but also an increased susceptibility to other diseases, and also reduced fertility.

We know that nutrition is the most vital component of fertility and, since we hope to have the cow cycling six weeks after calving, any nutritional insult around calving will have a detrimental effect on the in calf rates in the ensuing mating period.

Veterinarians now have a new tool in Metabolase, an injection with many nutritive ingredients, to assist low energy cows.

Carnitine is essential for fatty acid conversion to energy, methionine aids liver digestion, antioxidants reduce free radical damage and other ingredients detoxify urea build up. Energy sources are also supplied.

Happy days in Oz dairy DESPITE MILK price volatility most Australian dairy farmers enjoyed a good 2014-15 season.

Dairy Australia says in its June 2015 Situation and Outlook Report that the year was one of consolidation and growth for many farmers.

Reflecting a solid season, Dairy Australia forecasts national milk production to be 9.45 to 9.50 billion L for 2014-15 – about 2.5% more than the previous season, which had only grown 0.4% from the previous year.

While international prices remain depressed due to abundant supply and lacklustre demand, Australian dairy farmer confidence remains high.

Results from Dairy Australia’s 2015 National Dairy Farmer Survey (NDFS) indicate 74% of dairy farmers are feeling positive about the industry’s future, in line with 2014 sentiment. The surveyof 1000 dairy farmers also revealed 79% of farmers anticipate a profit for 2014-15.

Dairy Australia managing director Ian Halliday says farmer confidence has weathered the global market storm.

“Farmers in many dairying regions have taken advantage of the stable production margins and favourable weather over the past year.

“Milk processors are publicly forecasting similar farmgate prices for the 2015-16 season, and con-

tinued domestic and global demand have also been encouraging.

“More stable returns generated by the Australian domestic market, which consumes 60% of milk production, have helped cushion the industry through an internationally volatile 2014-15.

“And having a diverse range of markets and products has paid dividends for Australian exporters this season. It spreads our exposure to the volatility the global market can present, hence we haven’t felt the pinch of China’s decreased bulk powder imports.”

In Australia, dairy demand remained robust for 2014-15, Dairy Australia industry analyst John Droppert says.

“Recent figures show strong growth in spending by the food service and supermarket industries, though the pace of growth has slowed in recent months.

“Australian supermarket sales of major dairy categories continue to tell an essentially positive story.

Dairy spreads remain the top performer, outpacing all other major dairy categories for volume and value growth. Milk sales are increasing slowly and steadily and despite shrinking sales volumes, higher average/kilo prices for cheese and yoghurt/ dairy snacks are growing in value.”

While nationally farm-

ers are confident, the NDFS pointed to marked regional differences in sentiment. Tasmanian farmers are most positive (84%), then those in the Murray region (northern Victoria and the Riverina) and central and southern NSW at 81%. Confidence in the subtropical region

of Queensland and northern NSW has improved a lot from 33% in 2014 to 55% now, but is well below the national average.

Droppert says survey results suggested the improvement could be based on an improved farmgate pricing and procurement environment,

and greater external investment interest in the region.

More broadly, 64% of those surveyed across Australia identified benefits to the industry as a whole from the recently concluded free trade agreements with Korea, Japan and China.

UK milk deal near THE BUYOUT of UK dairy processor Dairy Crest’s milk operations by rival German company Muller is a step closer.

The UK watchdog Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has approved a proposal by Muller UK as part of its buyout of Dairy Crest’s milk business for $184 million.

Müller has offered to process a nominated volume of fresh milk for a nominated buyer in the South West/Wales. This will allow the buyer to compete for tenders in the South West, Wales, the South and the Midlands.

If approved by authorities, Müller would aim to complete the transaction by the end of the year.

Dairy Crest’s decision to sell its loss-making dairy business leaves the UK’s milk market in the hands of three big suppliers.

Dairy Crest’s dairies operations supply about 15% of Britain’s milk, (1.3bL) a year to retailers and residential customers. The business will be merged with Müller Wiseman Dairies, which produces fresh milk, cream and butter.

The other big milk producers in Britain are Denmark’s Arla, which also dominates the market, and the UK’s First Milk farmers’ co-op.

“We need Government to move away from paying lipservice and to focus on the here and now. Their long-term solutions must take a back seat while we focus on the immediate crisis; we need them to insist on best practice in the supply chain, look at growing dairy consumption and support more investment in dairy processing.

“We also urgently need milk buyers to be more transparent in pricing.

“Although there are a few clear formulas employed by milk processors, these are few and far between. We need all processors to improve transparency in pricing and must stop idly following one another to the bottom. This is a dire situation and we need to see the dairy industry pull through this period of

volatility.

“Government has a role here in insisting processors provide up-to-date market and production data so that the whole supply chain can better understand what’s happening and how to manage risk in the future.”

Arla blames its decision on the slump in commodity prices. Its UK head of milk and member services, Ash Amirahmadi, says commodity markets keep going down despite only a small fall in prices in the latest Global Dairy Trade auction.

“While we have taken significant mitigating actions, the impact has been felt on our traded business and more recently on European markets which are also in decline. Unfortunately, these factors are affecting the entire dairy industry and despite our efforts it has not been possible to buck the trend.”

First Milk outgoing chairman Sir Jim Paice says, “While the turnaround actions taken over the last two months have improved our trading position, we also have to factor in the impact of lower commodity prices.”

Paice, a former agriculture minister, will stay on until a new chairman is elected.

AUSTRALIAN DAIRY farmers are making big savings in energy use.

Under a state-funded scheme, 1400 farms (about 21% of the national total) were inspected and assessed, and a majority were found to be saving power – some as much as tens of thousands of dollars a year, says Dairy Australia.

The scheme is called Smarter Energy Use on Australian Dairy Farms, paid for by Federal Department of Industry and Science Energy Efficiency information grants.

“No other agriculture sector has engaged with so many farmers to save energy, reduce costs and improve farm profitability,” says Catherine Phelps, Dairy Australia’s natural resource management manager.

Since Smarter Energy Use started in 2012, energy assessments were done at dairy farms in all eight dairying regions and a further 930 farmers attended workshops and field days.

TO COMPARE the retail prices of Coke and milk and say the Coke was more affordable than milk is misleading.

Opposition MP David Shearer seems to have forgotten how the milk is produced: farmers are up at 4am milking cows, the milk is then picked up by tankers and taken to factories for processing, then it’s bottled and sent to supermarkets and other retailers.

And let’s not forget the animals farmers raise and keep in shape and good health to make the high quality milk.

And what does it take to make Coke?

NZ FIRST deserves a pat on the back for defending farmers against the furore over high milk prices.

Blaming farmers for the price of milk is wrong when supermarkets are creaming profits, says New Zealand First primary industries spokesperson Richard Prosser.

“We think it’s insulting to farmers to have fresh milk compared with CocaCola. Milk is a food taking skill to produce, whereas Coke is just carbonated water packed with sugar,” says Prosser.

Chocolate milk goes south anyway

SOME SOUTH Island retailers are going to great lengths to sell Lewis Road Creamery’s famous chocolate milk.

According to reports, two Christchurch dairies have smuggled the country’s most sought-after chocolate milk into their fridges.

Lewis Road Creamery has yet to distribute its product to the South Island, but two dairies have managed to stock it. They aren’t saying how they got the milk.

Lewis Road Creamery has warned it could pose a health and safety risk, as there was no guarantee the bottles were refrigerated while they were freighted south.

Dwarf cows take the heat DWARF COWS could be India’s answer to climate change.

Worsening heat, fodder shortages and the threat of drought are forcing many hard-hit dairy farmers in southern India to reduce their herds; they are selling cows at throwaway prices, experts say.

But the solution to the problem is simple and small, livestock experts argue: heat-tolerant dwarf cows.

Researchers from Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and the state government’s animal husbandry department are now promoting a switch to Vechur and Kasargod cattle, two local varieties known for being easy to raise, resistant to diseases and – most important – more tolerant of high temperatures than crossbred cattle.

FONTERRA’S 10,500 farmer shareholders got hit by a double whammy last week.

The co-op’s Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction was down for the eight successive time and, worryingly, whole milk powder prices suffered a whopping drop of 10.8%.

And rubbing salt to the wound, Fonterra farmers learnt that the co-op will be paying more than a dollar extra for milk collected in Australia.

As owners of the co-op, Fonterra farmers are struggling to make ends meet: last season they received $4.40/kgMS for farmgate milk plus 20-30c/kgMS as a dividend.

This season, the co-op has opened with $5.25/kgMS and the current GDT trend suggests that opening price is now under immense pressure.

But across the ditch, where Fonterra operates 10 manufacturing sites and processes 1.7 billion litres of milk, the co-op is forking out $6.30/kgMS to Australian suppliers who don’t own shares in the co-op.

Fonterra is also forecasting an average closing farmgate milk price range of $6.60-$6.82/kgMS for the season.

For the hardworking Fonterra shareholder in New Zealand, this is hard to fathom. It doesn’t make sense for shareholders to pay more for milk outside NZ while struggling to keep their businesses afloat.

Sure, the dynamics of the Australian dairy industry are different from those of NZ. Unlike in NZ, Fonterra is not a price setter in Australia. It plays second fiddle to Murray Goulburn, the country’s largest processor and owned by farmers.

Fonterra – like Saputo, Lion Dairy and Parmalat – is a foreignowned corporate fighting for local milk.

While Fonterra shareholders understand the need to pay the right price for milk overseas, the big question is whether they are getting the right returns.

It’s no secret that Fonterra’s Australian business has been struggling. While the co-op manufactures award-winning cheeses, spreads, yoghurts and dairy desserts brands, the returns are woeful.

This prompts the question, is Fonterra right by ploughing hundreds of millions of dollars into overseas milk pools?

In a good year, when the payout is $8.40/kgMS, Fonterra farmers may not pay too much attention to returns in overseas milk pools. But when the chips are down and farm balance sheets are turning redder by the week, farmers are questioning the wisdom of expanding overseas.

Fonterra’s first obligation is to its farmer shareholders in NZ. Australia may be a strategic business but if it is not performing and giving proper returns to shareholders, it may be time to rethink its existence.

There’s no point in Fonterra shareholders forking out more money to Australian farmers while they remain in doldrums.

And do Fonterra directors need to go? Would such a move restore credibility with farmers and staff? While it might satisfy people to have someone fall on their sword for our low payout, I doubt these moves would solve our problems.

If people are incompetent in their jobs or make bad business decisions, they need to be fired.

None of the expert or nonexpert commentators criticising Fonterra has said how they could have done better. But multi-million dollar salaries come with expectations.

They are subject to the tall poppy syndrome I imagine it’s not easy being at the top.

Farmers like to quote facts about their business – total milksolids/ha/ cow, empty rates, farm hectares, etc. But with dairy processors it’s payout. Perhaps we should also be looking at their debt levels over five years, inventory on hand, foreign exchange profit/loss and earnings before interest and tax.

This is not the first tough time our industry has faced, and it will not be the last. These cycles will come and go and hopefully the banking industry knows and is prepared for this. The banks have been making hay while the sun shines, nearly tripling their profits since the 2008 global financial

Comparing apples with apples, no one is outperforming Fonterra. We have quite a few dairy companies thanks to the DIRA and yet they are paying roughly the same to their suppliers as Fonterra. I would love to see the independents set the standard, flex their muscles and show the big co-op how to do it. They could even guide us on a better way to buy and sell our products and market them. The three P’s have always been the standard for farmers: Payout, Payout, Payout.

This is how farmers have always measured the success of dairy companies.

The companies seem to have no problem recruiting suppliers, but not even Open Country Dairy is building more factories.

Fonterra suppliers have no choice but to get involved, understand and participate in their co-op.

Fonterra is a good company. I don’t supply it, but it does set the benchmark in New Zealand for dairy processors, is dominant

crisis, and they need to give back now the weather has changed.

Suppliers need to know that Fonterra has the right business strategy, and while we can’t control the long-term fundamentals of international dairy demand, hopefully they will get stronger and we will bounce back.

Federated Farmers members tell me loud and clear that Fonterra must remember its NZ dairy business is the number one priority. Overseas expansion is nice but it’s not on all NZ farmers’ minds when they judge success. There is no point in succeeding elsewhere when at home farmers are threatening to leave, dropping the market share.

Dairy company directors have been getting a kicking. But now is the time to be more constructive and to offer solutions to our industry’s problems. This does not stop us from asking the hard questions of the companies we supply, but we

shouldn’t be playing the man over the ball.

This approach will only work if farmer and dairy companies are willing to listen and improve com-

munication. The KISS (keep it simple stupid) method works for all strategy; focus on key performance indicators rather than death by Power

Point, because now is not the time for a talk fest; we need real action.

Helping farmers navigate nutrient rules maize BRYAN INCH

NUTRIENT BUDGETS

are being created as part of nutrient management services offered by Ravensdown, as farmers grapple with their changing regulatory obligations.

An actual nutrient budget (ANB) is the formal document used to assist with compliance and is typically historic – reflecting actual nutrients applied. A Ravensdown ANB is an auditable document increasingly demanded by regional councils.

This differs from the predictive nutrient budgets (PNB) that help farm-

ers plan ahead for their fertiliser requirements based on soil testing data and Overseer modelling from certified advisors.

PNBs are typically produced as part of a process to create a fertiliser plan and help farmers optimise nutrient application.

Not all nutrient budgets are created equal. The lasting importance and potential complexity of an actual nutrient budget means that the amount of time spent by trained staff is in a different league from the kind of forecasting nutrient budget that helps identify how much of what fertiliser will need to go where.

In both cases, Ravens-

We often have the farm’s soil test data trends, fertiliser plans and application history all under one umbrella and our staff understand the local regulatory requirements.

fore the actual cost of the ANB will depend on the complexity and size of the farm and the relevant regulatory requirements.

However, there will be no change in how PNBs are resourced and paid for. These are simply the kind of documents our clients expect our team to produce when working on their fertiliser plan and there are no plans to charge for this.

Mounsey says he’s very fortunate to have won places at the two events.

“I think these events will help me operate to my full potential, and fasttrack my personal development while giving me overseas experience,” Mounsey told Dairy News.

Apart from being in partnership on a farm and working for DairyNZ, Mounsey is a Fonterra networker. He is also chairman of Federated Farmers Otorohonga region and is currently on the Kellogg’s

Leadership programme.

Mounsey, who milks 300 cows on 114ha, says the farm is going well and looking better than ever.

“We are coming into our third season of the conversion. We are improving production year on year and focusing on environmental and health and safety initiatives.”

The downturn in milk prices is hurting farmers; for Mounsey keeping tab on costs is the key.

His advice to young farmers is to work smart.

“Play to your strengths, surround yourself with likeminded people, be passionate, resilient and committed to your end objective, and never let go of its promise.”

It’s this year’s cashflow that counts – expert THERE ARE good lessons to be

drawn from the global financial crisis (GFC) for dairy farmers in managing volatility and getting the most from their banking relationship, says Hayden Dillon, head of corporate agribusiness and capital advisory for Crowe Horwath.

Major rural banks were expected to support their dairy clients despite many farm budgets indicating negative cashflow positions for the coming year, he said. And post-GFC, banks had undergone significant reforms and were now well positioned for access to capital.

“It’s critical to note that major rural lenders do not assess the viability of farms based on last year’s or next year’s payout,” says Dillon. “Banks are acutely aware of the market they operate in, which will sometimes see their customers run cash deficits due to volatility.”

Because of that, the banks used averaging, known generically as a ‘sustainable year,’ to assess a farmer’s ability to service and repay debt.

With that in mind, farmers should pay attention to three key themes to get the most from their banking relationship, says Dillon. These are: Understanding what their normalised costs are, and being able to justify those costs to their banker.

as opposed to providing assistance and advice.

In good payout years farm costs invariably increased, but when things got tough, farmers were also good at tightening their belts, said Dillon.

“Unfortunately for those with leverage it’s not good enough to just say you will cut costs when talking to your bank.”

While banks would draw considerable comfort from being shown that historical expenditure during good periods had led to ongoing increases in productivity, they also wanted to see that in the event of a low payout, those expenditures could be reduced without materially impacting produc-

tion.

The objective is to provide a set of normalised accounts to allow a ‘sustainable year’ evaluation to be done.

This needs to be completed by an independent adviser so the farmer had credibility with the ultimate decision-maker at the bank, said Dillon.

“The ultimate decision maker at the bank is most likely not your banker, especially when the business falls outside the terms upon which any funding was initially agreed.”

Dillon said that during the GFC there were consequences of farmers relying on their banker to do their budget. “In some cases this led to considerable stress, because the bank and the farmer had different expectations. And when things changed, the bank struggled to establish the communication necessary to enable both parties to manage their way through.”

In regards to budgeting, Dillon stressed the importance of constantly reviewing things as situations change, “Volatility of commodities, seasonal variations and input costs mean cashflow budgeting cannot be a ‘set and forget’ for the season.”

It’s also important to be prepared for any eventuality.

“Having budgeting discussions and considering possible scenarios now will help ensure you are in a position to be aware of the information you will require and the people you will need around you, says Dillon.

which runs a large farming operation in the central North Island. Recently they held a field day at their property near Mangakino.

Just down the road at the Atiamuru power station the pylons and cables fan out across the countryside. Like Atiamuri, WMI is a powerhouse, in this case of dairying.

The numbers are staggering: 10,500 cows, 4030 replacements, 400 bulls, 3900ha of 12 dairy farms and three support blocks. In the past year this has produced just on 4 million kgMS. About a quarter of the farming platform is irrigated.

As the name Wairarapa Moana suggests, the owners of this land are originally from Wairarapa and they were given the present block after the

But he has a strong farming background, having been brought up on a sheep and beef farm in Hawkes Bay and a dairy farm in Wairarapa. He has a ‘structured management’ approach, meeting every ten days with the staff managing farms and with his senior management team who report on the status of their individual properties, cow condition and pastures cover. Operations managers also keep regular contact with the managers.

Hume says managing the WMI farms is a challenge in volatile times; the key to this is good staff communication, a strategy everyone understands and what role they have to play.

“We have designed a system which we think is resilient and to which people can adapt. We are system three and we have strategically chosen that because we feel with that system we can respond either by putting in more feed if the payout is good or pull back on feed if it’s bad.”

WMI has a policy of bringing in half a tonne of PKE/cow/year and they grow maize onfarm and where possible grass silage. All young stock are raised on the support blocks, the calves going there when they are 100kg and the cows going from the end of May until near calving.

WMI has also invested heavily on environmental work: in the last eight years $8 million has been spent lining all the effluent ponds. Great care is

taken to use just the right amount of fertiliser and water.

Operations manager David March says the result is a win win: lower input costs and a better environment – a key goal in all Maori farming operations. Farming within limits is now an everyday

part of farming life and he encourages any to get involved in local groups dealing with such issues.

The business spends a lot of time and money recruiting and retaining good staff. People want to work for WMI and there is a constant flow of CV’s coming in.

With 10,500 cows, Wairarapa Moana is one of the largest Maori dairy operations in the region.

POTENTIAL FOR YOUNG ONE FARM’S manager at WMI is Khardinn Wereta, a man passionate about and dedicated to the dairy industry. He sees huge opportunities for young people in dairying but says they need to change their attitudes to work – they have been spoon-fed.

“We need to change the way we teach agriculture in schools. Generally it’s taught from 9am to 5pm and the kids go home. We need to get them on the farms at 4am to milk the cows and they need to realise their day may not finish until late in the evening.” Too much “cotton wool put around these kids” have queered the expectations, he says.

Wereta was raised on a farm where he had to work and was given good values and a strong work ethic that have helped him rise through the ranks of the dairy industry. Being given responsibility has also helped.

But the young generation has little understanding of the primary sector, he says. “It’s surprising how many kids think milk comes from a pump inside a factory rather than from a cow.

They are quite shocked to see that it comes from a living thing; the conversion of grass to milk is a concept they don’t understand.”

high-priced PKE. Farmers at a 2013 NARF field day had questioned the implications of this given the large role PKE played in their own operations.

Launching the new trial at a DairyNZ field day at NARF in early June, the research leader Chris Boom explained that for the latest trial the farm was to be split into three farmlets: one supplementing intake with PKE, one supplementing with additional crops – maize, turnips, chicory, plantain and possibly fodder beet, and a third where the cows’ feed is to be supplemented with grass silage grown on the property.

About 80 cows will go onto each farmlet, the researchers ensuring each herd has exactly the same ratio of high performers and low performers.

Each of the systems will have an equal balance of herd size and quality, N application of 127kgN/ ha/annum, land quality and pasture type to ensure a fair and balanced outcome. Young stock for each farmlet will be raised off-farm until they reach the R2 level, returning to the farm in time for calving.

The only minor difference in cow numbers will be on the grass-only farm with a stocking rate of 2.5 vs the cropping and supplement systems’ rates of 2.7.

Boom says this is to show the land buffer required when operating a low-input system in a region known for its frequent wet winters and dry summers.

The cropping farmlet, stocked at 2.7 cows/ ha will get maize, turnips, chicory, plantain and possibly fodder beet grown on a 2ha plot (7% of the farmlet’s area), to help maintain pasture quality and available ME through winter and summer. These will mostly be fed as standing crops.

PKE will be fed on an ad-hoc basis, costed on average at $300/tonne

delivered.

With PKE price fluctuations being one of the main reasons for the research, Boom says a lot of thought went into potential PKE price ranges when setting up the study.

Modeling a hypothesis, the researchers set a low price of $280/t delivered, an average of $300/t delivered and a high of $380/ tonne delivered.

Boom says the experience of the NDDT farmer board was drawn on while setting these figures. They are affirmed by Rabobank’s New Zealand and Asia director of dairy research, Hayley Moynihan, who says PKE prices, like most global feed grain prices, are now relatively low.

“Those prices seem to be a reasonable spread to me and indicate the volatility in market prices for PKE.” “The market is driven by a number of factors so the wide sensitivity is required.”

While there is a wide range in PKE prices, farm models produced only two scenarios where the farmlet using PKE as a supplement wasn’t the most profitable, says Boom.

The first is where milk prices were below $4.70/ kgMS and the next is where the price of PKE averaged $380/t delivered onfarm.

In circumstances where farmers would get $4.70/kgMS the supplement farmlet would make $581/ha while the grass only system was predicted to produce $625/ha and the cropping farmlet was predicted to earn $707/ha.

When PKE prices reached $380/t delivered Farmax predicted that the supplement farmlet would earn $1888/ha – $82/ha less than the cropping farmlet but $310/ha more than the grass-only farmlet.

Boom attributes this to the accessibility and reliability of supplement when compared to cropping and grass systems which can be markedly affected by the weather.

best way to do this in our systems,” she says. “We’re still learning how to do it well. The farmers who adopt a good strategy can see the benefits.”

Davis says the system could vary from farm to farm.

“It’s difficult to give generic advice. There are a lot of factors you have to take into consideration when planning a transition strategy: what your goals are, what your cow nutrition and body condition is leading up to calving, and what diet those cows will be expected to perform on once they go into a lactating herd.”

It takes about three weeks on a transition cow diet to get the best value for conditioning the rumen. Restricting pasture and putting cows on rations is a usual strategy.

“There are different ways of tackling it and it depends on what system you have and what sort of diet the cows are expected to be on once they start lactating,” Davis says.

Rations vary and while Dairy Australia runs workshops for farmers to work out the best strategy for their farms “we don’t put out recipes”.

“It’s more about understanding your system and your goals and working with a nutritionist to come up with a diet that’s going to work well. Some have a simple transition diet, others have a more complex one balanced with respect to all the nutrients.”

Davis says speaking to a nutritionist would help farmers. “It’s complicated and we don’t expect all farmers to be experts in this area.”

20 years, says the group’s programme manager for animal health and fertility, Kathryn Davis. It can improve cow health, milk production and reproductive performance.

But a Dairy Australia survey has found only about 70% of farmers are using the system – better than the 65% found in the previous survey – and not all farmers using the programme have an approach that meets all the cow’s nutritional needs.

“It’s improving but there are still 30% missing out on the benefits,” Davis says.

Among farmers using the system there’s “usually some room for improvement. Even some farmers doing it for a while find things they can tweak to make it easier, reduce the labour time or get better results. Some are still working with different nutritional regimes to see what works best for their animals.”

Davis says many benefits accrue from having a transition cow system.

“The cow will be well prepared to transition from being dry to coming back into lactation; she’ll produce more milk once she gets into the milking herd and she’s more likely to have low stress calving and keep in good health.

“It keeps her well supported during the challenge of pregnancy and it has benefits for fertility down the track.”

According to DairyNZ, the ill effects in animals was due to elevated levels of glucosinolate in swedes, particularly when the animals grazed in late pregnancy and early lactation when the crops were more mature.

Also, in 2014 the season was warmer which may have contributed to greater swede yields and more leaf being fed in the later part of the season.

DairyNZ is advising farmers and their staff feeding swedes to be extra vigilant for signs of photosensitivity, weight loss and ill thrift in their herds. Check all cows including young stock and any animals being fed swedes, including animals off-farm with a grazier or on a support block.

DairyNZ advises farmers to look for the following: Weight loss and illthrift, and down cows unresponsive to normal metabolic intervention.

Photosensitivity – signs include cows seeking shade, reddening of the udder and skin damage to white skin areas, restlessness shown by skin twitching, flicking of ears and tail, irritability and stomping.

Poor crop utilisation – leaving crop behind, espe-

cially the bulb.

Cows not putting on condition despite adequate crop allocation.

If there is poor crop utilisation (bulbs being left behind) don’t increase allocation as this will increase the intake of leaf.

Increase supplement allocation and seek veterinarian advice.

If cows are not putting on condition and you are confident of your crop yield allocation, seek veterinarian advice.

If you see ‘sick’ cows, where possible remove the affected animals from crop and provide shade for any animal showing signs of photosensitivity.

For the balance of the herd, reduce the swede percentage of the diet by increasing the existing supplement or introducing other feeds. Seek veterinarian advice.

colostrum gives it longevity and stops it from separating, says SealesWinslow nutrition and quality assurance manager Wendy Morgan.

Morgan is presenting 15 Dairy Womens Network (DWN) Successful Calf Rearing workshops around the country.

She told the first North Island workshop in Ngatea that adding an EasiYo sachet to colostrum – one packet for 20L of colostrum – or adding yoghurt from the supermarket, provided it contains acidophilus bacteria, is a good way of keeping colostrum for longer. The first ‘batch’ can be used to seed the next batch of colos-

trum and so on. The good bacteria will grow and the environment will discourage the bad bacteria.

“You want colostrum to be completely consistent so the calves are getting all the same amount at the same time. We don’t want it separating out.”

Freezing is another storage method but you have to be careful how you defrost it, Morgan says.

“Proteins have a specific structure as do the immunoglobulins in colostrum.

If you microwave colostrum to defrost it, the protein becomes solid and is not available to the calf.”

The chill needs to be taken off so calves do not use energy to bring it up to body temperature. Older calves are fine with cold milk.

The timing and amount of colostrum is important,

Morgan says. The best time to get colostrum into calves is the six hours after they are born. If possible it is best to collect calves twice a day from the paddock, otherwise some will not get colostrum until after 24 hours.

“Twenty four hours is when colostrum absorption starts to reduce and is not as effective. DairyNZ research shows 56% of calves don’t get colostrum from their mothers.”

Morgan says she is happy with tube feeding if the alternative is no colostrum. “In an ideal world everyone will bottle feed their calves. But it can mean some calves won’t get colostrum or someone is so stressed that the calves won’t suck.”

up quickly. In a new-born calf the immunoglobulins are large molecules and can be absorbed in the gut wall. After 24 hours the immunoglobulins don’t get absorbed. But if the colostrum can’t be fed until after 24 hours those immunoglobulins will still work on the pathogens in the gut itself so it is still useful.

Morgan says you should taste the colostrum to ensure it hasn’t gone off. You should test taste fresh colostrum to know what it should taste like: “It doesn’t taste really nice but it doesn’t taste disgusting.”

Moving on to milk, Morgan says milk out of the vat versus calf milk replacer is an easy comparison this year. Milk out of the vat will be the more economical. A payout of about $6kg/MS is the breakeven point and at that stage it is worth doing a comparison between the two. “You should look at milk powder if you have some disease on farm and you don’t want it passed onto the calves. Milk powder is sterile and a good way of getting vitamins and minerals into the calves.”

The aim of calf feeding is to improve and grow the rumen and to ensure the mature cow can take all the nutrients out of the

pasture and foliage she is fed.

“It is a huge fermentation vat with millions of microbes,” she says. The rumen needs a good surface area and developed muscles.

When a calf is born the rumen will be one flat plain muscular structure. The aim is to grow rumen papillae (fingerlike protrusions). Papillae grow by feeding starches and sugars to the calves.

Starches come from grains like wheat, maize and barley and sugars come from things like molasses.

“If we just feed milk the rumen won’t develop because milk doesn’t go into the rumen so it doesn’t affect rumen development. The calves will grow well because they are adapted for the milk. But if we only feed milk and wean onto grass they will have a massive growth check because the rumen isn’t developed enough to take the nutrients out of the pasture.”

Feeding only hay and milk will not grow the papillae but it will cause the muscles to develop.

Sometimes papillae grow too quickly and they stick together; fibre sources help split them apart.

down too quickly and the microbes can’t absorb it and you can end up with acidosis.” Molasses is fine but it must be limited.

Morgan says the sooner we can get calves eating meal the better because milk is the most expensive feed for calves. Meal is the next most expensive and grass is the cheapest. “The sooner we can get them on grass the better.”

She suggests putting meal in the pen from day one to get them used to it and eating a little. Pellets and meal are both suitable for young calves.

Don’t add urea to calf feed because urea is not a true protein. Avoid calf meal that says ‘non-protein nitrogen’. Calves need things like soya bean, canola, cotton seed, sunflower meal – any sort of vegetable protein. PKE has 18% protein, soya bean meal has 48% protein – a high protein meal of

30-50% is needed.

Calf meal needs to be high in energy; look at the specifications. You want 13% ME for small calves and a bit more for older calves. That should come from grains like maize, wheat or barley. Energy should not be obtained through biscuit meal, lolly waste or similar. “We don’t want too much fat or fast energy. A consistent diet is necessary.”

Morgan says the amount of milk and frequency is one of the most contentious subjects.

Some people do once-aday from day one others think that is cruel.

And if calves aren’t eating meal it probably is because there’s too much milk. “You can look at scaling back after about three weeks.” For those on twice-a-day who are considering when to go to once-a-day, three weeks is the best timing.

Calf sheds need good air flow but if possible they should not be facing the prevailing wind, says Morgan, who is running 15 Dairy Womens Network (DWN) Successful Calf Rearing workshops around the country.

Calves should be dry and out of the wind.

“If they are cold that is not really a problem.

Calves cope fine with cold weather but they don’t cope well with wet or wind chill,” she told the Ngatea workshop. “When they are exposed to that sort of weather they are using their energy to keep warm and not for growth. You could use canvas or shade cloth appropriately to reduce wind getting into the shed.”

But good air flow should be maintained so the bad gases are removed.

If air flow is reduced, too much ammonia can build up which is not good for the calves or the people working with them.

“You can cut parts out of a building to provide better airflow. But calves must not be sitting in a draught. The best way of checking is to get down to calf level and light a lighter or a match and if it blows out there is a draught. If it stays lit the cows are fine.”

Slats at the base of a shed are a good bedding option because the waste drains away; but ensure the waste doesn’t just sit under the slats, it needs to be drained away.

The numbers of calves and size of the shed will always determine how many are housed. But best practice would be to have 10-12 calves per pen with 1.5m2 per calf.

Morgan recommends an all in, all out system for bringing calves into the pen. Moving calves from pen to pen as they

grow means the disease challenge will build up in the first pen and day-old calves would be very susceptible. Shed spraying is important one or twice a week, and footbaths coming into the shed are recommended.

“You can do as much as you like for hygiene for the calves but birds can ruin all your good work by adding salmonella to the calf troughs,” she says. One of thr biggest reasons for birds on farms is uncovered feed.

They go into the open silage face, have a good feed and come back to the nice warm shed. The silage face should be kept closed when not feeding out. The loss of the grain is reducing the nutritional value of the silage.

Morgan says woodchip, sawdust and wood shavings are all great bedding: they drain well and are good for the calves. Make sure it is not treated with a chemical or stain.

River stones are also a good, reusable bedding.

They warm up in the sun and they turn over so the waste will drop below. But they need to be the right size – about cobblestone size. They need some form of chip drainage underneath. Straw is also good warm bedding.

Clean, fresh water is imperative. When a calf is being fed milk it goes to the abomasum – the final compartment of the stomach.

“What we are trying to do in rearing calves is improve the rumen and grow the giant fermentation vat that is going to be essential to break down all the fibres when we feed pasture. The milk doesn’t go anywhere near the rumen.

“In a rumen we want everything to be mixing around – all the bacteria and all the feed particles to be mixed together and broken down and absorbed by the animal.

By having water in there you are moving everything around.” Many trials show the grow rates of animals on water is a lot better than those without water.

For transportation the

trailer should be driven slowly and have non-slip matting. Check it is actually non-slip as some product does not live up to its name. Fake grass was also suggested. Carpet or mat-

tresses are difficult to clean.

Calving planning is important to decide who is doing what and making sure everybody knows the plan, says Morgan.

Calves should be kept dry and out of wind.

Milk replacer pay dividends in Oz AUSTRALIAN FARMERS Trevor

and Anthea Saunders are dedicated Jersey breeders and their enthusiasm about their herd showed when we visited in late May. The Saunders farm at Shady Creek, north-east of Warragul, Gippsland.

Anthea controls the calf rearing and is determined to give them the best possible start. Optimum feeding is by means of Urban automatic calf feeders installed in three bays of the calf shed where the different groups, each of 24 calves, are treated individually as sensors read their eartags.

The calves get the first eight hours of colostrum through the mothers, and then go onto a manual feeder where they receive colostrum only. “They are strong enough to be taken off after 24 hours,” she says.

The calf milk replacer to be used in the automatic feeder is critical and the Saunders worked with local vet Grant Nielsen from the West Gippsland Vet service who manages their calf management programme. They previously had problems with salmonella and E.coli.

“When we were looking at the calf milk replacers we wanted animalderived components, not vegetable-

sourced ones as the calf ’s digestive system works better to get the best possible out of them. And probiotics are important,” she says. “They are fed milk at the right temperature at the right time – 1.5L at a time.

“We chose the MaxCare Ultimate formulation purely on its specifications – particularly the high protein and fat percentages. The calves make a better curd and it optimises the nutrient consumption and extraction from the feed.”

Milk powder maker Maxum Animal Nutrition has three different formulas in their MaxCare Calf Milk Replacer range. mTop of the range is Ultimate, containing the highest nutrient density available in the Australian market with 28% protein and 22% fat, plus probiotics, amino acids, vitamins and minerals.

“Calves are fed ad lib up to 10L a day for the first two weeks. The feeder allows them 1.2L per feed every two hours until they reach their quota for the day. From two to 10 weeks they are on 6L a day and then the milk allowance is dropped to 2L at three months of age.

Later they get about 2kg/day of grain from six weeks to weaning,” Saunders says.

“From the 6L per day they are getting at two months and two weeks it is dropped to 2L at weaning at three months,” Anthea says.

THE RISE in the number of families moving to the country and buying lifestyle blocks was always going to be good for the agricultural machinery industry.

With a lot of the older smaller tractors such as the TE 20, the MF 135 and the Ford 3000 gone to Fiji or re-invented as boat tractors, there are not enough, or the price is too high.

New Holland importer CB Norwood recently launched the new Boomer range at National Fieldays: the Boomer 25, 35 and 50 – 27hp, 38hp and 46hp respectively.

The baby – the Boomer 25 – has a 3-cyl engine of 1300cc, and delivers maximum power at 2700rpm. It is coupled to a 2-stage hydrostatic transmission, with twin pedals for forward and reverse control and

offering variable speed from 0-15km/h dependant on position. So no levers to shift, and more important very easy for a novice to drive.

At the rear end the cat 1, three point linkage has a lift capacity of 650kg and the hydraulics can pump out a satisfactory 23L/min of oil through one rear remote. A single speed PTO at 540rpm pushes out around 20hp at the shaft.

The bigger stablemates, the 35 and the 50, use 4-cyl engines of 1800cc and 2500cc respectively. flanks of the Kaimai-Mamaku Ranges, at 335m altitude, overlooking Okororie in Waikato.

Farmed by Ross Alexander and his family the area amounts to 370ha owned, and the remainder leased on the adjoining boundaries. The farm carries 1400 sheep and 40 breeding cows, and carries a few mobs for dairy grazers from the locality.

After working as a professional shearer, with many seasons in Wales and Scotland, Alexander returned home to take over from his father, and carried on with an interest in breeding, genetics in particular which had sat dormant for a few years.

That particular interest extends to a breeding stud of 350 ewes selected for their resistance to facial eczema (FE),

with the horrific damage it does to the livers of the sheep it affects.

The history of the stud can be traced back 40 years. Regular and somewhat expensive testing show markers which indicate resistance and stock are selected accordingly. The resultant rams in particular are much sought after throughout the country, and the stud has been recognised as the most FE tolerant stock in New Zealand.

The 40 breeding cows also show that interest in selective breeding, as they came from an AgResearch trial of breeding for twin calves, and while described as a “bit mongrel” by Alexander, they are mated to Angus bulls and achieve a calving rate (cows put to the bull) of 110%.

With this type of stocking a large part of the workload is taken up with feeding duties, and utilising the 320 large square bales of silage and hay that are produced on farm. Until recently this was done with a pitchfork, but the onset of the dreaded post 50 – a crook shoulder from wrestling with so many ewes, and the need to preserve a golf swing, suggested a change was needed.

Alexander describes himself as “borderline ADHD”, he likes things tidy on the farm, and he doesn’t want to go the conventional tractor and bale-feeder route and churn up the ground. So they approached The Feeder Leader Company in Taupo, coming up

with a solution that utilised the farm’s 330,000km Toyota Hilux.

They modified a square bale feeder to run with a self-contained power pack using a Kohler 14hp engine, a 24L/min hydraulic pump, and a 60L reservoir to keep everything running cool.

Once started the direction of the bale feeder is controlled by a key pad in the cab and couldn’t be easier. The only modifications to the Toyota was the fitting of a spring assist kit for $800, which raises rear capacity to 1500kg, and is well within the 500kg feeder and typical 550kg bale weight Three months later, and after

150 bales across it, the conveyor is performing faultlessly.

Says Alexander, “I’ve put the pitchfork in the back of the shed. The only thing I need now is a sharp knife to remove the plastic wrap and string from the bales.

“I thought I might have to change to round bales because I was unsure of square bale feeders; now I’ll stick with squares that stack so much tidier.”

Dating back to 1956, this company has extensive knowledge of the total mixed ration (TMR) market, evidenced by its range of trailed and self-propelled machines from 8-33m3 with vertical or horizontal mixing.

Most types of machine are also capable of self-loading, with a hydraulically driven cutter head on

a loader arm mounted on the rear or front of the machine in the case of the self-propelled units. This has the major advantage of not needing a dedicated loader tractor, or in the worst case having to unhook the mixer wagon, load up, then re-connect to carry out a mix, which is very time consuming.

Storti marketing manager Ignacio Nunez mentioned standout features of the Doberman model on display: high efficiency rotor for a homogenous mix and low power consumption, bi-directional loading arm to suit all types of material being loaded, and heavy ladder construction chassis.

He also pointed out options such as the in-built weight system and the

single lever control of the whole unit.

Nunez also announced the recent signing of a distribution agreement for New Zealand with Robertson Manufacturing, Canterbury, well known for their bale and silage feeders.

Robertson sales manager Tyronne Campbell commented, “The addition of Storti to our product offering allows us to cover the whole spectrum of animal feeding, and the decision to join forces with Storti is based on their worldwide reputation for experience in the TMR field.”

Robertson plans countrywide demonstrations of the Doberman self-propelled machine.

BACK IN 1970 we were

wearing tank-tops, tie dies and platform shoes, and mirror must have been in short supply, but the year marked the birth of a motoring genre that has just reached its 45th birthday. Back then the term SUV hadn’t been dreamed up, but today it forms a huge part of the new car market around the world.

1970 saw the birth of the Range Rover, which had rural folk thinking the motoring industry had gone mad. Who would want a huge box-like vehicle with permanent four wheel drive, big petrol guzzling engines and large leather seats? Surely it’ll

never catch on?

But it did, spawning a generation of luxury four wheel drives that sat people higher, gave them a feeling of safety and took the curbs of suburbia in their stride.

In its 45 years the Range Rover has seen four evolutions, and history will record it achieving a number of firsts. So much so that the incarnation referred to as the Range Rover Classic was the first vehicle to be shown at the

Louvre in Paris , with a citation that recognised “an exemplary work of industrial design”.

But the beauty wasn’t just skin deep. The RR was the first vehicle to complete the 18,000 mile Trans-American Expedition, won the London to Sydney Marathon in 1977, and the inaugural Paris Dakar Rally in 1979.

Today’s Range Rover is a far cry from the 1970s original; it has an allaluminium body shell,

can be specced with engines up to 550hp, and continues to push the technological boundaries with features like the recently launched All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC), which controls slow speed over difficult ground while the driver steers.

And after 45 years it still has the desirable name, still has the looks and still is the place to be if you want comfort and luxury.

market for off-road vehicles seems to know no boundaries, and over the last few years we have seen an evolution of quads into a new category called side-by-sides well suited to NZ farming practice.

The normal layout is usually two seats, a rear load tray and an all-important roll cage.

Kymco is a relatively new name on the scene in NZ, but its parent company has a history that dates back over 60 years.

Originally a parts supplier to the Honda Corporation, Kymco in 1963 set out on its own journey. Today it has about 3000 employees who produce around 850,000 units annually, exported to 80 countries.

The NZ company was formed in 2013, and now has 19 dealers, and plans

for major expansion in the next two years So what of the machines? Its UXV 500i is one of the most popular in the range and well suited to farming. It is powered by a DOHC liquid cooled engine developing 36hp, coupled to a belt drive CVT transmission offering hi and lo ranges and a top speed of 70km/h. A full frame steel chassis supports independent A-arm suspension units front and rear for good ground adaption and operator comfort and has around 310mm ground clearance. Drive capability is taken care of by selectable 2WD or 4WD on-the-go and traction is enhanced by diff locks to the front and rear.

Braking is by dual disc brakes at front and a single hydraulic disc at rear. Both systems are aided by the engine braking function of the CVT unit.

Towing capacity is 550kg, and the manual tip

rear load tray can carry 190kg.

Operators are protected by a roll cage, seatbelts and headrests, and are seated in bucket style seats either side of a central console that houses the gear shift lever.

Optional comfort extras include roof, windscreen, wipers and winch

systems, all readily available.

The vehicle also has sealed storage areas for the odds and sods needed during a farming day.

The Kymco offers a workman-like package, and though not one of the better-known brands is worth a closer look.

site to show an interesting incarnation of its GMF series wide area mower.

The machine was destined for a farm in Canterbury where it would be front mounted on a 160hp tractor to cut ‘green crop’ mustard, with the residue then incorporated in one pass by a set of rear discs.

The GMF 500 is based around a heavy duty centre section with two rotary blades, and hydraulically folded wing sections carrying one blade each, to give a 5m working cut and 2.4m transport width.

The driveline consists of shaft and 250hp rated gearboxes, so no belts to slip, and the ability to push on at speeds from 5-7km/h and achieve large daily output.

In the intended configuration the machine will be allowed to ‘float’ on the front linkage of the tractor, ground following is controlled by four out-front castor wheels and cutting height is set using a rear roller system.

Lateral oscillation is taken care of by up to 20 degrees of float achieved through the folding mechanism’s hydraulic rams. – Mark Daniel www.fieldmaster.co.nz

light trucks in New Zealand at around 20% of the total market for new vehicles, it’s no surprise the major vehicle manufacturers have large budgets to get their products in front of potential customers.

Ford used National Fieldays to showcase the

2016 Ranger models, available from September, and believe the upgrades will continue to keep them at the top of the tree for another season.

Other than the base model getting a 2.2L engine, the remaining 18 variants get the 3.2L litre Duratorq TDCI engine with five cylinders and for 2016 an upgrade to the exhaust gas recirculation system that helps improve

fuel consumption by around 18% over the previous model.

Electric power assisted steering gives a 3% fuel saving vs the normal power steering pump, and it markedly quietens the cabin. The steering has a neutral feel, and its effect is dependent on speed, steering wheel angle and cornering forces, and acceleration and deceleration.

The interior has a new-

adaptive cruise control, which adjusts speed to maintain following distances in traffic, a forward collision warning system and the increasingly popular lane keep and departure warnings.

clever geek to design something using CAD, build it, sell lots, bank the money and live the life of Riley with a bevy of dusky maidens, or toy-boys, in the Cayman Islands.

In reality the lifespan of a car is seven-eleven years, so on the day you drive that new model out of a dealer’s showroom some clever geek is working on a new model that will take four-six years to develop.

As well as creating a new look, incorporating the latest engines and transmissions and paying homage to the newest audio visual technologies, designers are having to pay special attention to handling and comfort as customers become increasingly more critical of these areas.

Once a design has been engineered, pre-production vehicles are handed to test engineers for final refinement, and testing. The Ford test facility at Lommel in Belgium is a good example.

Here a 1.5km test track replicates 100 different potholes and surfaces from 50 countries – speed bumps that can wreck suspensions if taken too quickly, cobblestones from Paris streets, typical Asian monsoon-swept roads with deep ruts, un-made roads that wreck wheel rims and burst tyres….

The diary of a test driver at this facility must include regular visits to an osteopath during the development of a new vehicle. They typically cover 5000 laps of the 1.5km test track during a development cycle, and encounter potholes up to 14cm deep, and at speeds of up to 70km/h. In six months of testing at the Lommel facility they can replicate 10 years of hard driving, or abuse, while using $1.4 million dollars of hi-tech equipment to record their findings.

So next time you hit a pothole on the Desert Road and shake your bones, give a thought for the man from Ford who has probably driven through a replica of the same hole 5000 times – and does it for a living. – Mark Daniel

On January 4 1958, driving 28hp TE20 tractors, Edmund Hillary’s team became the first overland explorers to reach the South Pole since Captain Scott’s expedition in 1912.

One of the actual Ferguson TE20’s (named ‘Sue’ by the team) used on Hillary’s remarkable expedition now resides in the Massey Ferguson Technology Centre in Beauvais, France.

In 2014, 56 years since Hillary’s journey and 56 years since the birth of the Massey Ferguson brand, a Massey Ferguson MF5600 series tractor made a similar trek across the ice.

Meet Glenn Jackson Meet Glenn Jackson from the small town of Taumarunui, in the King Country, New Zealand. Glenn is in partnership with his father, Colin, and together they run a Silage & Hay Baling Contracting business, and it’s fair to say they are very passionate about their Massey gear.

During the off season Glenn heads overseas, often to Western Australia to work the harvest, but this year he is escaping the NZ winter months and working the wheat harvest in Dalhart, Texas USA. Unfortunately Glenn isn’t operating Massey gear in Dalhart, but he is very much looking forward to being reunited with his beloved Massey’s when he returns to New Zealand in spring.

We asked Glenn to give us some feedback on the new Books To Go App, and here is what he told us.

What do you like most about the new Books To Go App? “Being able to access parts information anytime and anywhere.

I’m an ex-diesel mechanic so I do like to do some of the smaller jobs on my machinery, but to have all the parts books in front of me and being able to talk to our local Dealer over the phone is a great help. It makes for a very simple process. Of course our Dealer always checks to ensure we haven’t missed any serial number breaks and variants in specification levels or things like that.”

“I really enjoy not having to carry around parts books anymore.

Because we are contractors we work in many different locations, so with the new Books To Go app, all I need is my iPad and I’m away.”

Do you use the pick list function with the ability to send orders directly to your Dealer?

“Yes, I use this every time. It’s so easy to just add all the items I need to a nice simple shopping cart and

then within seconds I can export the list to my Dealer by e-mail. If the parts are in stock at the Dealership it’s an extremely quick turnaround and if they need to come from the master warehouse in Melbourne, I have them the next morning. It really makes for a simple process and that service is fantastic.”

Do you use “offline books”?

“Yes, this is one of the best features of the App. Because we are often working in remote locations without internet access, I can download all the required books for my tractor models to my device, meaning that I can still use the app without internet coverage while I’m in the back blocks in the middle of nowhere. Then my simple e-mail list of parts sits in my e-mail outbox until I get in a reception area and then it is sent to my Dealer.”

“I have eight Massey Ferguson tractors in total, ranging from early

machines such as the trusty MF35, MF135 and MF168, all the way through to the MF6290, 3x MF7400’s, and the tractor I call “The Beast”, which is a big MF8160. All these models are included in the App, so it’s a must for anyone who owns Massey Ferguson, Fendt, Valtra or Challenger tractors or any Hay and Harvesting products for that matter as well.”

How has the Books To Go App added value to your business?

“I’d have to say it’s all about those time critical moments. This App has saved me so much time over the past six months and helped us build a more efficient operation. Less downtime when repairs are required along with better communication and interpretation methods have really made the parts ordering process so simple for me. Also, we often need to identify parts afterhours, so with this handy App I can work out exactly what I need and send it through to my Dealer afterhours, so I’m free to do other jobs during the critical working hours of the day.”
