President’s Report I would like to commence my Presidents Report by welcoming all Members old and new as well as every Brangus enthusiast and supporter to the 2018 Autumn edition of “The Australian Brangus” magazine.

As I write this report most of Queensland are experiencing heatwave conditions and although some districts have received some rainfall relief in December and January there is still a large proportion of the eastern states that remain in drought and are still waiting for the summer rains.

The Annual General Meeting of the ABCA was held at the Gracemere Saleyards on Monday 9th October and it was great to see so many members attend.

The Federal Zone representatives were up for re-election and as the three incumbents in zones 2, 3 & 4 had received no other nominations they were returned to office unopposed.

Zone 1 through the retirement of former director Greg Magee had received one nomination and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Kellie Silvester to the Management Committee, I’m sure that Kellie will bring a great wealth of knowledge to the committee. I would also like to thank Trevor Jorgensen for taking on the Vice Presidents position as well as Luke Keogh for continuing on as Treasurer.

Prior to the ‘Legacy of Ladies’ Sale at the Gracemere Hotel a presentation of Honorary Life Membership was awarded to John and Wendy Fawcett who owned and operated Coreen Brangus stud. Former ABCA President Jeff Frank acknowledged the numerous successes of the Coreen herd and their tireless promotion over countless decades of exhibiting and showing Brangus cattle.

Mathew Petty from Scenic Valley Brangus was also presented with the Burnham Youth Award Trophy as the 2017 winner. Mathew is a very deserving winner and a great ambassador for Brangus youth.

The ABCA has also seen a number of changes this year with our staff at ABRI. I would like to welcome John Thomas to the position of Executive Officer of the ABCA and wish him well with the new acquisition to his portfolio. John has been involved with Brangus over the past couple of years filling in for Natalie during her maternity leave and attending previous AGMs and sales.

Natalie Herd has reverted back to her original position as breed registrar from Monday-Thursday and I would like to thank Natalie for all that she has done in her past role as Executive Officer.

This year we have an actioned packed calendar for Brangus which will kick off with the World Brangus Congress in Houston Texas from the 27th of February.

A number of Australians will be in attendance and it will be great to see the many photographs and report in the Spring Edition of The Australian Brangus Magazine.

Beef 2018 in Rockhampton will be a great platform to showcase our wonderful Breed to both local and international guests. Brangus will feature as one of the largest breeds in the Stud Cattle Arena and plans are progressing well to ensure visitors to the Brangus Boulevard are made to feel very welcome. If any members wish to contribute with the manning of the ABCA site during the event or sponsorship for stud cattle classes please contact John Thomas directly or any of your management committee representatives.

In conclusion I hope to catch up with many members old and new between now and Beef 2018 and I hope that those of us who are in need of a serious break in the season get some welcome relief soon.

At $60,000 Telpara Hills Miss Van Damme 15M3 (AI) (ET) is the breeds new record priced female. The 19-month-old offered by the Pearce family, Telpara Hills Stud, Atherton sold to Troy Mitchell, THEG Stud, Emerald Beach, Coffs Harbour, NSW via phone.

Lake Majestic Brangus, Alabama, US were the underbidder on the daughter of the $110,000 current male breed record holder, Telpara Hills Van Damme 541H30. Miss Van Damme is out of a full maternal sister to SCC Dealmaker 468W40 (US) and is maternal sister to the $45,000 former record holder, Telpara Hills Miss Real Deal 15K owned by Greg and Liam McAlister, Greenacre Stud, Wallarobba, NSW. Next best was the $10,000 Alkoomie Ms Foundation 000L6 (AI) (ET) selling to a partnership between the New South Wales bases, the Jorgensen family’s, Belview Stud, Delungra and Fleetwood Grobler, Stockyard International, Coonabarabran. The heifer sold carrying a safe test to Alkoomie Chavez 920L and has already had a full brother sell for $30,000.

Nev and Megan Hansen’s, Oaklands entry, Miss Webcke 920L6 sold for $7000 going to Rod and Wendy Streeter, Rowen Stud, Marian, Queensland.

Miss Webke 920L6 carried a four month test to the multiple show winner and $20,000, Oaklands Smooth Operator.

Oaklands will be the home for another female purchased out of the sale in the form of the 11-month-old, $6500 Bonox B944 (Bonox 330) offered by Bruce and Leanne Woodard, Bonox Stud, Taroom.

Offered by the Pearce family, Telpara Hills Stud, Atherton, the Suhn’s Foundation daughter bred from the Csonka (US) female, Telpara Hills Miss Csonka 920H3 sold unjoined via phone to the Lake Majestik Farms, Alabama, US. Making a huge imprint on the market and in the Telpara females was Stockyard International Brangus.

Owned by Fleetwood Grobler and Margaret Charter, Stockyard Stud, Coonabarabran, NSW, they accounted for four Telpara females for on average $19,000. Their ticket included the $20,000 sale opener, Miss Swift 541L21 (GR Swift 209W3 8

In all, six Telpara females set an $18,176 average and included Telpara Hills Miss High Quality 820M6 selling for $7000 to the Tristram and Lynette Davis and family, Watership Downs Stud, Keerrong, NSW. Miss Swift 541L21 a paternal sister to the $110,000 Van Damme carried a safe test to Telpara Hills Place Your Bets 392K24 now owned by Lake Majestik Farms while Miss Csonka 541L35 carries safely to Telpara Hills Ace Of Spades 541K65.

Alkoomie averaged $5625 for their eight. Others to invest in the Alkoomie draft were Palgrove principals, David and Prue Bonfield, Dalveen taking a $6500 CB Passport 803Y11 (US) – Csonka daughter aged 22-months. Kraken Stud, Rockhampton owned by Jason Jeynes and Julie Sheehan outlaid the same amount for a Suhn’s Foundation – MC Real Deal entry in the 19-month-old, Alkoomie Miss Foundation 541M (AI) (ET).

Triple B claimed her stablemate, the $7500 Bonox B918 (11-months) (Bonox 654). Jeff and Kerri – Ann Parker, Gunnadoo Stud, Casino, NSW averaged $2643 for their seven topping at $3500 for 11-month - old, Gunnadoo Park Jazman (Gunnadoo Park Famous) selling to Richard Reynolds, Glenrosa, Gin Gin. Glenrosa ended their day with four for on average $3250.

Michael and Tanya Maddern, Earlwood Stud, Duaringa came away with a $4215 average for their seven. Two from Earlwood made $5500. Earlwood 3348 a 11-month-old daughter of Earlwood Fui Fui sold to Brad and Vicki Hanson, Bullakeana Stud, Moura while John and Alison Bell, Inavale Stud, Boonah took as their selection the 11-month-old, Telemon Galen daughter, Earlwood 3570.

A total clearance of the entire set of embryo packages offered by Mark Reid, Jett Brangus, Emerald was achieved during the 41st sale.

Topping the market was a package of four eggs featuring the pairing between Lead Gun Of Brinks 222K14 (US) and Texas Toque Z008 fetching $800 and selling to Rockhampton based, Kraken Stud operated by Jason Jeynes and Julie Sheehan.

Palgrove Stud, Dalveen, operated

by David and Prue, secured the lion’s share of the small but quality offering. Palgrove outlaid $1600 for 12 embryos (three separate packages) in a mating featuring Washington Of Brinks (US) and Texas Omina X046.

A five zygote package featuring the coupling of Greendale Oscar and Texas Toque Z008 made $600 selling to Paul Ryan, Coachwood Stud, Jiggi, NSW. Brangaloo Stud, owned by David and Tracey Muscat, Pleystowe picked up a two embryo package in Csonka (US) and Texas Robin W80 for $300 while Peter, Cathy and Shane Muscat, Habana Springs Stud, Habana secured five eggs in a Greendale Oscar and Texas Toque Z008 pairing.

Semen to $140/straw at ‘Beef ’18 Benefit Auction’ In a bid to bolster the breed’s presence at Beef 2018, the Rockhampton Sale organizing committee solicited support from members to stage the Brangus Australia ‘Beef ’18 Benefit Auction’ Semen Auction. The auction was conducted during the 41st annual Rockhampton Sale and featured 17 semen packages generously donated by 11 Queensland breeders.

Top selling package was $1400 ($140/straw) for 10 straws of Bonox 335 (Greendale Xciting) donated by Bruce and Leanne Woodard, Bonox Stud, Taroom. Successful bidders of the package were Brad and Nicole Saunders, Pheasant Creek Stud, Wowan. Next best at $130/straw was the package donated by the Pheasant Creek Stud in Bonox 265 (Bonox Jumbo) selling to Kiara Brennan, Great Northern Cattle Company, Yakka Munga Station, Broome, WA. Great Northern Cattle Company also took with them the package of 10 straws in Doonside 1144 Trademark (AI) (Burtins Transformer (P) (US)) donated

by Alex and Emma Dodson, Moura for $350.

Ian Francis, Cedar Valley Stud, Chelmsford outlaid $1200 for the 10 straws and the last public offering of the US import, XS Johnny Lee 369H (S) donated by the Pheasant Creek Stud.

Pheasant Creek again supported the sale by securing the $200 package in Telemon Ebenezer (Glen Heart Tao) donated by Josh and Sam Comiskey, Brave Heart Stud, Alton Downs.

Local breeder, John Collins, Yaraandoo Stud, Gracemere purchased the package in Triple B Huxley H583 (P) (AI) (ET) (Csonka) offered by Lindsay and Fiona Barlow, Triple B Stud, Dingo for $700. John also outlaid a further $75/straw for the package in Elton RB Fulltime 1060 (ET) (Csonka) the sire of the 2016 RNA champion, Dynamite Kryptonite offered by Hardy and Mandy Woodard, Taloumbi Stud, Eidsvold. Coolabah principals, Paul and Denise Studt, Capella picked out the package in US import, DCC Mr Paladin 915U5 (AI) for $28/straw.

This package was donated by Edward and Kara Quinn, Voewood Stud, Calliope. Voewood also offered a parcel in another US bull, TCB Catawba Warrior R532 selling for $62/straw to Paul Ryan, Coachwood Stud, Jiggi, NSW. Habana based operation, Habana Springs Stud, owned by Peter, Cathy and Shane Muscat, selected two packages for $36/straw and $24/ straw respectively for the five straw packages offered by the Coolabah Stud in their home bred products, Coolabah Baron and Apollo. Baron sired the 2017 Feature Show Champion, Coolabah Everest and Apollo was also a Feature Show Champion (Clermont 2013).

Kalapa breeders, Nev and Megan Hansen, Oaklands Stud donated a five straw package in MC Something Special 129W14 (AI) (US) selling for $40/straw to Paul Ryan, Coachwood Stud, Jiggi, NSW and $16/straw was paid for the other Oaklands donation, Oaklands Geronimo (AI) (ET) (Csonka) selling to Greg and Alicia McGee, Beejay Stud, Capella.

Brad and Vicki Hanson, Bullakeana Stud, Moura took with them the $700 package in the $28,000 Tannyfoil Jagger I64 (Bonox 265) offered by Pheasant Creek Stud, Wowan. Jack and Jennifer Wright, Ramsey Creek Stud, Banana donated a 10 straw package in the former show winner, Pheasant Creek Edinborough E3 (Charlevue McKinlay). It made $450 going to Rodney Johannesen, Folkslee Stud, Brooweena. Rodney Barrett and family, Salisbury Plains Grazing, Bowen selected the package of 10 straws in Castle Jandowae for $220 donated by Greg and Alicia Magee, Beejay Stud, Capella.

$32,000 tops the male market for Telpara Sale Summary ROCKHAMPTON BRANGUS SALE 129 Bulls Average $9,147 Top $32,000 Gross $1.18M Sale clearance 93%

Clearance levels remained static while averages dropped by $668 per head when compared to the 40th anniversary sale. However, balancing that reduction, in a yarding described by many as the most even seen in many years, was that the number of bulls marketed, increased by 18 head.

Market honours went to the Telpara Hills Stud, Atherton. At $32,000 Telpara Hills Kenworth 382L4 sold to the Comiskey and Cowper families, Lunar Stud, Emerald. Kenworth, a son of the US import, MC Real Deal 541R3 is from the leading donor, Telpara Hills Miss LTD 392G (LTD Of Brinks).

Just weeks earlier Miss LTD also produced the top selling bull at the annual ACBA Roma Sale when Telpara King Pin 392L3 made $26,000 selling to Hardy and Mandy Woodard, Taloumbi Stud, Eidsvold. Hitting the scales at 1092kg with an EMA measurement of 134cq cm and fat depth scans of 16/8mm together with an IMF reading of 6.6, Kenworth headed the Telpara team that also included the $18,000 Prime Mover (MC Embassador 541Z15 (US)) selling to Dickson Grazing Company, Bagstoe

Station, Einasleigh; the $13,000 D-Double another by Embassador off to Matt Kenny, Tralee, Middlemount; the $11,000 Heavy Duty also by Embassador going to Hacon and Sons, Buckingham Downs, Dajarra.

Telpara Hills Maxx Force 541L51 (AI) (ET) (Suhn’s Foundation 331Z28 (US)) changed hands at $13,000 selling to Mark and Amanda Salisbury, Bimbadeen Stud, Monto with $17,000 witnessed for Mack 236L6 (AI) (ET) (MC Something Special 129W14 (AI) (US)) going to regulars, Mal and Sue Burston, Broadlea, Nebo.

Sale opener was the $11,000 Big Rig (AI) (ET) (MC Onstar 924W4 (US)) picked up by Bloss Hickson, Huntly, Rolleston. Eleven from Telpara set a $14,454 average for owners, the Pearce family.

The Executive Paper Dear Members, I’d like to formally introduce myself to those of you whom I haven’t met.

My appointment to the role of the Executive Officer of the Australian Brangus Cattle Association Ltd., (ABCA) became effective, 1st January 2018.

This role isn’t new to me in respect of the fact that I had previously taken on an acting role as Executive Officer while Natalie Herd was on maternity leave, attending the Annual General Meetings in both 2015 and 2016 where I was fortunate to meet and make a connection with many members of the ABCA. Recently I attended in my new role, the 2018 ABCA Board meeting in Brisbane where it was my pleasure to formally meet and liaise with the current Board of Directors.

Natalie Herd has since taken on the extremely important role of Registrar of the ACBA. Natalie can be contacted at the office 9.30am to 2.30pm (Eastern Daylight Savings Time) Monday to Thursday with Victoria Lee taking over Natalie’s role on Friday’s. This new job sharing arrangement will ensure that you the members have access to a Registrar five days a week as well as a full time Executive Officer.

With the next big event on the Brangus calendar being the triennial Beef 2018 (Rockhampton, May 6th - 12th), I, like many others, are certainly excited and looking forward to attending the international event. It’s a great opportunity to engage with breeders, members and users of Brangus from Australian and overseas, viewing the entire spectacle and spreading the news of the benefits of our great breed.

In a reflection of the prevailing seasonal conditions, the figures were down on the 2016 sale result where 102 bulls sold for an average price of $8147 and a clearance of 94pc.

However, a true reflection of the geographical spread of the breed was evident with a vendor list stretching across three states, involving 29 prefixes from the Atherton Tableland to Victoria and 115 registered bidders.

For the second year in succession the Telpara Hills prefix claimed the sale honours.

Market topper at $26,000 was the 31-month-old, 965kg, 129 EMA, 17/9mm, Telpara Hills King Pin 392L3 (AI) (ET). Cattle Egrets and your cattle The Cattle Egret (Ardea ibis) is well known to most Australian cattlemen and women, especially anybody who observes birds in the tropic, sub tropic and warm temperate areas of Australia. Brangus breeders certainly know the bird, as its contrasting white colour in a paddock of prime Black or Red Brangus certainly stands out.

However, not many of us know that the Cattle Egret is a relative new comer to our shores, first recorded here in 1948 when it apparently arrived via South East Asia into Northern Australia. So, it is not indigenous and in fact is a migrant, thought initially from Africa (north of the Sahara), and only recorded in South Africa in the Twentieth Century. It’s also significant that the first recorded sighting in the US was in 1953, those birds coming from Africa, while in New Zealand although only supporting a small semi migrant population, records that the first sightings occurred in 1963 where they are believed to have flown from Australia.

In reviewing information on the bird an interesting quote was sourced from ‘Awake’ Watchtower magazine, where writing in Spain, Joe McDonald wrote: “It must be one of the most peaceful colonisations of all time. Not a shot was fired, not a drop of blood was shed … The invaders inexorably occupied one country after another”.

He was referring to our friend the Cattle Egret.

It is understood that the bird is now the most widespread wading bird in the world.

The symbiotic relationship between the Egret and cattle is well known in that they both benefit from the relationship, the Egret by eating ticks, flies (including Buffalo fly and other biting and annoying insect species). While cattle are grazing they disturb other insects such as grass hoppers, beetles etc. Egret are also recorded as eating frogs, cane toads, worms, lizards and some small mammals. A report from Tanzania estimated that during a grasshopper plague there, flocks of up to 40,000 Cattle Egret were observed, with the approximate intake of 600 grasshoppers per bird each day.

Conservation status in all Australian states and territories is “Secure”. Their habitats include wetlands, rangelands, pasture, savannah and woodlands, and the major inland river systems of Northern Australia. As Biosecurity is a major current discussion topic within the cattle industry, there appear to be no issues regarding Cattle Egret as being an issue as a vector to transmit possible pathogens/diseases or Cattle are not the only animals to host the friendly, symbiotic weed seeds etc to cause concern.

“It is indeed my pleasure to be asked to introduce the newest recipient of Honorary Life Membership of the Australian Brangus Cattle Association.

they exhibited at the Melbourne Royal Show. Through this journey the Fawcett family and their cattle attained many major awards on numerous occasions.

A life membership is something that is not given out lightly, it’s reserved to honour those members who have shown an unselfish dedication and commitment to the Brangus breed over a long period of time.

John was also a very ardent and committed supporter of Field Days such as Farmfest and AgShow. The Coreen Brangus stud commenced exhibiting at the Brisbane Royal in 1976 where Coreen Billabong took out the Grand Champion Bull. Billabong went onto be the first Brangus bull to stand for semen collection at Wacol AI Centre. Coreen was also one of the original vendors at the inaugural ABCA Sponsored Sale that was conducted at Gracemere in 1977.

Looking around this room here tonight I’m guessing there are not too many people present that have know, John Fawcett, longer than I have. I first met John and Wendy and their children, Greg, Peter and Sue, 42 years ago at my first Gympie Show in 1975. The Coreen Stud founded by the couple was established at their Widgee property and was first registered in January 1971 as Stud number of 150.

John, Wendy and their family were very active in the show and sale arenas over a 28 year period, attending their first show at Gympie in 1972. The Coreen cattle were exhibited at Regional, Feature and Royal Shows and the triennial, Beef Expo Shows. This pastime took them and their cattle as far south as the Melbourne where 22

Brangus breed from the early years of their stud, having spent many years serving as a member of the committee, including a time as President. It was during his time as President, John put in place the first steps to amalgamate the Brangus Association in Victoria with the national ABCA, which came to fruition in 1994.

With the view to retirement, John and Wendy negotiated the sale of their Coreen Stud as a whole, to the then owner of the Greendale Stud, Michael Brown in 2003. The Fawcett legacy, however, is being continued on by their daughter, Sue, whom opeates her prefix, the Lazy S Brangus Stud at Condamine.

One of the highlights of the couples showing career would have been winning the prestigious ‘Supreme Exhibit’ at the Gympie Show in 1986 with Coreen Navigator. Navigator sold later that year to the Tony Thomas’s, Greendale Stud for $16,000 to create a then new record price for a Brangus bull.

Even though John is no longer an Association member, it would be remiss to not present him with this rather overdue Life Membership. But let me say that while it is being presented to John, this award, is just as much recognition of the contribution and commitment to the Brangus breed by all of the family.”

Personally I hold many fond memories from the many years we spent together on the show circuit competing against each other with a friendly rivalry. John has been a very dedicated and committed supporter of the

Palmal takes Most Successful title At last years annual Central Queensland Carcase Classic a list of the Brangus breeds achievements was printed in the last publication of The Australian Brangus.

We are reliably informed that the list has been upgraded with the inclusion of Brangus composite entries from David and Julie McCamley’s, Palmal Stud, Dingo. These entries were classified as Brahman cross entries instead of Brangus and these entries were part of the team that assisted the family to claim the ‘Most Successful Exhibitor’ title and host of other class and minor victories.

The McCamley’s class wins included a 6th placing in the Pen Of Three Steers/Heifer (Maximum 2 Teeth) (180-300kg Carcase Weight), a 2nd ribbon in the Single Steer/Heifer (Max 4 Teeth) (300-420kg Carcase Weight), and a 2nd and 3rd in the Pen Of Three Steers/ Heifers (Max 4 Teeth) (300-420 Carcase Weight).

Their championship awards included the Reserve Champion Grassfed Carcase with their Brangus heifer scoring 152.40 points. The two tooth body scanned 14/15mm, an EMA reading of 110 sq cm and received no penalty points and a Hot Carcase Weight (HSCW) of 370/5kg.

Their Reserve Champion Grassfed Pen of Brangus Steers were those that placed second in their respective class. The trio comprised a pair of four tooths and a two tooth entry.

and fat depth scans of between 12 to 16mm for P8 and Rib measurement all of 15mm. Their EMA measurements ranged from 82 to 86 sq cm.

Their other championship title was the ‘Most Even Pen’ that was awarded to their pen of Brangus Heifers that had also contained the Reserve Champion Grassfed Carcase. These three heifers delivered a HSCW of 369.5 to 371kg, EMA readings from 79 to 110, P8 readings of 10 to 14mm and Rig Fat measurement 6-7mm.

Duarran picks up prestigious ‘Paddock To Palate’ award Roma breeders, Ian and Anne Galloway, Duarran Stud, Roma scored one of the major titles at the highly contested RNA ‘Paddock To Palate’ competition that was finalized at last years Brisbane Royal.

The Hereford/Brangus entry took out the Reserve Champion Carcase in the 100 Day Grain Fed Class. The class incorporates Feedlot Weight Gain, Carcase Competition and MSA Eating Quality.

In all 51 exhibitors entered cattle in the 2017 Competition.

The Galloway’s steer gained a total of 96 points – just one point separated the Champion and the Reserve Champion bodies. The milk tooth steer entered the competition at a liveweight of 393.6kg, ended the trial with weight of 664kg with an overall gain for the period of 260.4kgs and an Average Daily Gain Anne and Ian Galloway, Duarran stud, accepting their award at last year’s RNA. of 2.6/kg/day. With carcase weight of 397.5kg the steer had a dressing percentage of 60.78 and recorded fat depth scans of 9/8mm and an EMA measurement of 119cm sq and an MSA score of 48.08.

Yaraandoo Telemon share honors at Central Classic Sale Sale Summary CENTRAL BRANGUS CLASSIC 101 Bulls Average $7,600 Top $20,000 (twice) Sale clearance 99%

Two prefixes shared top sale honours at $20,000 during the annual Central Brangus Classic Sale, CQLX, September last year. Sale averages dipped by $1134 per head while clearance levels varied by only one percent when compared to the 2016 fixture.

On the upside, the market was able to sustain extra demand as seven more were sold over that of the previous years result.

John Collins, Yaraandoo Stud, Gracemere was the first to snare the equal top price with his $20,000 seller, Yaraandoo X-Factor, (33-months) (969kg) (13/9mm) (129 EMA) (Bullakeana Grand Justice) selling to Richard and Diane Pender, Boonderoo Brangus, Tansey.

Equalling that amount latter in the sale was Telemon Jacob offered by Springsure breeders, Duncan and Karen Geddes, Telemon Stud. A 33-month, 866kg, 10/7mm 130 EMA son of Telemon Forbes, Jacob went to commercial interests, Geoff and Karen Russell, Echo Hills, Springsure. Telemon set a $8412 average for their 17. Included in their result was the $11,500 Telemon Key Hole (Telemon Frank) going to Gavin McKenzie, Tannyfoil Stud, Blackwater and the $13,000 Kung Fu Panda (Bonox 729) selling to Stuart Hamilton, Wathonga, Eidsvold. Bruce and Leanne Woodard, Bonox Stud, secured the $15,000 Japan (S) (Glenavon Ozzie) while Jeff and Scott Schneider, Yaamba claimed the $12,000, King Maker (Telemon Forster) late in the sale.

The second top price seller also came from Yaraandoo in the form of the $17,000, X-Treme a paternal half to the equal top seller, X-Factor. Picking up 26

the bull was Jim and Glenda Maguire, Bingegang, Dingo. Yaraandoo averaged $8889 for their nine. Another high seller in the Yaraandoo team was the $11,000 X-Calibur (Bonox 691) selling to Wayne and Marcia Maguire, Scrubbee Stud, Dingo.

Two bulls carried $16,000 price tags.

First of these was Couti-Outi Voltron (Couti-Outi Phoenix) sold by Lawson and Linda Geddes and family, Couti – Outi Stud, Kunwarara and going to Lindsay and Fiona Barlow, Triple B Brangus, Dingo. Nine from Couti – Outi averaged $8611. The other was Bonox 910 catalogued by Bruce and Leanne Woodard, Bonox Brangus,

Bruce and Sandy Ryan, Moola Stud, Sapphire averaged $6500 for their four topping at $11,000 for a rising threeyear-old herd bull selling to Dan and Juta Godwin, Yarrai, Springsure. Colin and Kym Kime and family, Amaroo Stud, Nebo set a solid average of $5700 for the five they catalogued while Jarrod and Leanne Deguara, Bimbora Stud, Nebo took with them a $7500 average topping at $12,500 for their trio. 2017 Burham Youth Award Matthew Petty hails from Scenic Valley Stud, Mount Walker, Queensland.

The 22-year-old formed his Scenic Valley prefix in 2013. He immediately commenced breeding and showing Brangus cattle after being inspired by well known Brangus breeders at Beef 2012 and Farmfest 2013.

Born in Ipswich, Matthew grew up in the Mount Walker area of Queensland on his family’s property. After completing his entire schooling at West Moreton Anglican College where he enjoyed all Agriculture subjects and where he became involved in the school’s cattle. It was at this time the seed was planted with regards to the showing and working with stud cattle. After secondary schooling, Matthew then took himself off to AACC to complete a Certificate 3 in Rural Operations (Beef Production).

Matthew’s foray into the Brangus world commenced when he and his father purchased his first Ultrablack and Brangus females at the 2013 Nindooinbah Sale and then backed these purchases up with two more heifers and a bull from Glenoyra Brangus Stud, Oakey. In 2014 he showed his team of Brangus around south east Queensland. In late 2015 he sold his first bull to a Warwick producer and mid 2016 sold another bull to producers at Roadvale.

As Matthew recalls, “In south east Queensland our main rivals in the tropical ring are the Droughtmaster and Brahman breeds, I think I’ve worked hard to show and shown quality cattle. It’s starting to pay off, I believe, at the 2014 Beaudesert Show I took out the Champion Pair Of Females of the show and in 2016 I took out the Champion Pair Of Heifers with two heifers I purchased from the Elara herd.”

He went onto to say, “I’ve always had strong passion for Brangus. It continues to be a great experience meeting good and knowledgeable people who like helping and assisting young people like myself get started in the stud beef cattle industry. I’m passionate about breeding better cattle and improving the genetics of the Brangus breed.

Fertility, growth, adaptability and profitability are the four ‘buzzwords’; words that I apply and stand for when buying or selling bulls and females.”

At present Matthew is working full time off property in a job that involves stud cattle and farm work on a stud property in the Brisbane Valley where among other things he’s preparing sale bulls and heifers for an annual on-property sale, with the young awardee adding, “This job had already given me the extra tools and ideas for my future plans for my operation in areas like growth and expansion.”

In accepting the award Matthew said “I wasn’t born into a stud cattle family, they however produce good quality 28

commercial cattle. My parents and even grandparents equipped me with the knowledge and willpower to be successful in anything I do. My upbringing was to be honest and true to everyone, care for everyone you work with, have a positive attitude and believe that you can do anything you want when you put your mind to it. My goal in life is to run my own property full of Brangus cattle, breed better Brangus cattle plus have my own on-property bull sale.”

The Burnham Youth Award was announced and presented during the dinner at the Gracemere Hotel, Gracemere and just before the commencement of the annual Elders ‘Legacy Of Ladies Sale’ during the 41st ABCA Rockhampton.

On their way to their best result to date average values lifted by a hefty $2452 at the annual Triple B Annual Production Sale, Dingo September, last year.

For vendors, Lindsay and Fiona Barlow and family, the 2017 result cemented the prefixes reputation as a supplier of large lines of bulls backed by comprehensive data. Analysis of the buyer list showed that 60 bulls (78 percent) of the offering went to repeat clientele from two states. So strong and consistent was the market that 17 individuals (22 percent) sold for sums of $10,000 or more on a day when 12 registered yearling heifers topped $3000 to average $2350 and commercial purebred maiden heifers hit $1700 per head to average $1162.

Commercial Triple B heifers hit $1,700 Sale Summary TRIPLE B ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE 231 Commercial Females Average $1,162 Top $1,700 Sale clearance 100%

The continual lack of availability of young, quality lines of commercial Brangus heifers was clearly evident at last year’s Triple B Brangus Sale, Dingo.

Pens of purebred unjoined heifers fetched $1700 per head on three occasions in a market that saw 231 average $1162 for vendors, Lindsay and Fiona Barlow and family, Araluen, Dingo. The sale was the final segment in the catalogue at the Triple B Annual Production Sale.

Station, Nebo taking 80 head to average them $1482 and topping at $1700 per head for two pens (20 head).

The other $1700 per head pen went to John Forrest and Family, Oakleigh Holdings, Alligator Creek whom signed off on 30 head to average $1067.

Lennox Barrett, Dalrymple Heights In all seven buyers tussled for the claimed two pens (20 head) to average offering with the Galea family, Broadlea

$900 per head while the Parry family, Blue Mountain added to their earlier male selections with a pen for $650 per head. The Kempton family, Boyne Valley put together a line of 60 for a $950 per head average topping at $1500 per head. Stan Power, Monto took the remaining pen of 11 heifers for $600 per head.

Live export opportunity for Brangus awaits Brad Hanson, Livestock Consultant, Hourn and Bishop Qld, Moura has indicated that there was a live export order for Brangus breeder heifers destined for Indonesia.

He has indicated that the order was for a live weight range from 280kgs to 420kgs with all cattle requiring clean coats, with no white on their underlines and defintitly no brindles.

Two consignments of these type of Brangus heifers have already been loaded and shipped to their new destination in Indonesia. Such is the quality of the consignments that have arrived the overseas clients have now requested more of the same type and descriptions of these Brangus females.

Brad Hanson, has also indicated that there was an added bonus with regard the sale of these type and quality of females. A premium of 50c/kg over current going rates applied for these types of heifers that are deemed to be the right article.

Bimbadeen’s inaugural Sale tops at $6,500 Australia’s longest existing Brangus stud and operation took on a new frontier and challenge staging their first On-Property Sale in conjunction with the ABCA Zone 2 Field Day in August, last year.

Bimbadeen principals, Mark and Amanda Salisbury, were overwhelmed with the response to the event.

Conducted under a Helmsman System the sale resulted in a 96 percent clearance of the catalogue. The 61year old prefix set an overall $4300 average for their product, topping at $6500 from an offering of 30 black and red bulls.

Mark commented after the event saying, “We had no idea what to expect from our first open day and sale, we’re very proud of the line of bulls we assembled and to know their new owners have received terrific value in their purchases please us even more.”

Around 140 people attended the event at the stud’s new cattle yards on their ‘Arthur’s Knob’ property.

Top seller was the 22-month-old, Bimbadeen M133 a black son of Telpara Hills Jackman (Hombre) selling to Rob and Sarah Cook, Rosavale, Bucca. Rosavale ended with a pair for on average $5100.

Doonside Ira Hayes daughter, selling to the Peter and Kristine Dingle and family, Redline Stud, Monto.

Six other buyers took two bulls each.

The Campbell family, Mooru Grazing, Gin Gin claimed two at $5000 each while the Lord family, Linville paid to $5250 to average $4500. MG and MJ Dingle, Ceratodus also claimed a pair to average $3500 while GV & JM Chapman selected entries to $4500 to average $4000. The Cedarvale Pastoral Company, Ubobo owned by the Chapman family also claimed a pair to average them $3625. Vernon Goody took a $5000 while Roy Goody selected a $3500 single entry.

In response to the day and the outcome Mark Salisbury added “We’re extremely proud of the strong line of 30 bulls for our first ever on-property sale, a number of our bulls destined for other multi-vendor sales were also on display and due to the response and the overall outcome I can definitely say there will be a second event next year.”

Bimbadeen have announced that their second annual sale will be conducted Second top at $6250 was the red entry, at the same venue on Saturday 25th August, 2018.

Forest Hills success with feedlot steers Recently Capella based operation, Forest Hills Stud, operated

by Michael and Kellie Silvester were rewarded with the fruits of their breeding programme shown to their greatest benefit.

The couple entered a total of 124 head of steers comprising 88 Brangus and 36 crossbred steers into the Paringa Feedlot, Capella, owned by Phil and Deborah Reid. The Brangus component were steers all sired by the couples Forest Hills Brangus bulls and the cross bred steers were bought in cattle.

At induction all steers were aged between 18-22 months and were weighed in on average liveweight of 442kg. After 105 days feed the group came out with an average liveweight of 671kg with a dentition ranging from milk and two tooths.

After processing the kill sheets showed that the average dress weight of the steers was 365kg.

Kellie Silvester said of the group, “These Brangus steers were our first line of bullocks we’ve bred and retained by our own Forest Hills bulls, we’re obviously very happy with the results, even more so that all the bullocks graded very well.”

“The 124 head were quiet, well handled, successfully fed and killed with no sickness, injuries or mortalities. We’re looking forward to seeing more Brangus bullocks like these in the future.”

2018 Brangus Carcase Competition This year’s competition is now closed and cattle will enter the Waterfall Feedlot, Goomeri on March 5th.

The entries will be judged as either Purebred Brangus Steers or Crossbred Brangus Steers in pens of seven head.

The feedlot will hold an open day later in the year and will be an opportunity for Brangus enthusiasts to view and compare the 2018 entries.

Jack wins Foxy Lady What a way to start in the seed stock world by winning a heifer.

That’s precisely what happened during the staging of the annual Classic Red Brangus Sale at CQLX Gracemere, in September, last year.

The vendors behind the fixture staged a competition called “Win A Heifer”.

Donated by Jack and Mim Walker, Jateebee Stud, Theodore the lucky winner had to be present at the sale and the would take home the classy, Jateebee Red Foxy 279.

The competition was open to all bid card holders in attendance at the sale with the only exception being the vendors of the Red Classic Sale. Red Foxy at the time of the competition was yearling daughter of Redline 2/096 (Doonside Drummer) out of a Redline Cody/Doonside 573 female. This female line of red matrons stretches as far back as Bimbadeen 931 a red cow registered in 1984.

The draw for the female took place before the commencement of the annual fixture with the assembled crowd burst into applause when the winner was announced as Jack Salisbury.

There’s a touch of irony as the heifer goes to a young Brangus enthusiast and descendant of one of the breed’s founders, his grandfather, Bruce Burnham and Red Foxy is back at the place of where her family originated.

A social license to farm beef?

There is no argument that the production of meat is under fire.

Animal welfare groups have an extended agenda with a view to the complete ban of animal agriculture.

What can a beef farmer do to maintain their livelihood as further pressure is placed upon their motives and methods?

We’re really addressing anthropomorphism, that is, attributing human traits and emotions to animal behaviour.

We might see it as deranged or humerous, but in a society that has lost all connection to the food chain, the only vision of cattle that the modern consumer can summon up is of daisy the big brown eyed cow, or worse, her doe eyed calf.

When even the most cynical ‘townies’ see ABC images of brutal handling or any form of slaughter of these animals for our own profit, they find very little common ground with us.

You know what, in a modern democratic society that demands respect for all, they are also right ... We cannot rest on our laurels and blame the ‘greenies’ or PETA, we have a responsibility to continually improve our record, to improve the respect we show the animals that feed the nation and beyond.

Remember this industry exports between 60 and 70% of total beef production every year. There is an enormous responsibility that comes with being a world leader in export production. We set the standard.

So what do we need to consider? In short, the measure of positive animal welfare is globally accepted as the ability of an animal to live free from disease, pain, hunger and stress while being able to engage in normal social behavior.

What we can do as breeders is ensure that the animals we develop not only provide clean, green, plentiful, safe beef but also work in synchrony to appease the consumer who cannot stomach the thought of an animal mistreated, abused or disrespected?

1.

Temperament. It is the basis for both stress and behavioural measures. We have these animals in our herds already and they are a pleasure to work with. Not just blind docility, but active engaged animals that have an interest in their surroundings. They do not panic if their environment changes or the herd dynamic shifts. These animals do not jump fences in panic or cower in the corner. Selection pressure is easy to apply.

2.

Disease and parasite resistance. Nobody will argue that the sight of a beast covered in buffalo fly with weeping lesions is something we are comfortable with. We are also aware that within that same herd, some animals are barely bothered by the pest and this is a heritable trait. To different degrees the same goes for tick and intestinal parasites. We can select for animals that are less likely to suffer from endemic disease, pests and parasites in general paddock conditions.

3.

Minimum maintenance energy requirement. There are our favourites in the herd, producing monster bulls or bullocks that regularly tip the scales well above herd average.

This is fine for optimum conditions, but often those high performers fall in a heap when feed runs low. There are also animals in the herd that ‘live on the smell of an oily rag’.

As these extreme weather events and extended drought periods increase, we will need those low maintenance cattle to survive and thrive. Our animals with improved temperament will also be more easily collected for transport before they reach critical bodyweight and reduce the impact of the starving cattle image on television sets across capital cities.

4.

High eating quality with minimal intervention. ‘Factory farming’ is a term that will turn the most confident city dwelling meat eater into an uncomfortable dinner table

guest reaching for the salad. Nobody really knows what it means, but the sight of tens of thousands of cattle penned in a muddy feedlot certainly makes our city cousins uncomfortable. Wagyu might be the flavour of the month, but a 400 day grainfed animal looks plain uncomfortable in anyone’s language and does not fulfill the requirements for a high welfare state. We know there are animals that can provide a high-quality cut of beef while grazing, and when times are more difficult, with minimal intervention and supplementation or a short grain finished stretch. These are the animals that will be more palatable, both on the plate and in the hearts of consumers.

Fake meat is coming but I bet it tastes like rubbish. Let’s help our city cousins and international Aussie beef eaters by lifting the bar on what we accept as best practice, continue to develop an animal that is comfortable in more situations and make them smile while they order their grass fed T-bone.

Palgrove’s big $10,350 average Sale Summary PALGROVE SALE 57 Bulls Average $10,350 Top $19,000 Sale clearance 100%

Sustained and consistent demand resulted in a complete clearance of the Ultrablack offering at the annual Palgrove Bull Sale, Dalveen, September 2017.

In what was clearly a vindication of the policies and practices employed by the vendors, David and Prue Bondfield and family, Palgrove Stud, the fixture saw an extra 13 bulls sold as compared to the 2016 result. Balancing these figures was a slight decrease in medium values of $980 per head when compared to the same period. However, demand was clearly driven by the operations attention to carcase quality and attributes, selection criteria and comprehensive list of data. (In 2016 44 bulls averaged $11,330 selling to a top of $24,00).

The 2017 sale draft delivered an average EMA scan of 123sq cms, fat depth scans of 11/7mm and an IMF reading of 5.9.

In all 44 percent of the offering scanned over 6pc for IMF with eight individuals posted a result of bulls over 7pc a figure that included yearling bulls.

Logo (960kg) (137 EMA) 12/8mm and an IMF of 5.7. Snapping up the son of Triple B Global (P) was Wepack Pty Ltd., Kenilworth acting through Aussie Land and Livestock, Kingaroy.

Tim Elliott, Mieke Fortune and Andrew Blissett, Wepack were on the hunt for a lead sire for utilization in their Ultrablack program. In all 16 sons of Triple B Global averaged $10,625.

Adding a significant contribution to the result was pastoral giant, Consolidated Pastoral Company (CPC), Newcastle Waters Station, NT. Their haul purchased through AuctionsPlus was 10 for an average of $10,500. Top of the CPC selections was the yearling entry, the $14,000, Magnum (ET) (16.5-months) (634kg) (117 EMA) (Texas Star 9U8Y) (US) which a semen interest had been retained by the parent stud. Top selling yearling was the 680kg, Majestic (ET) (121 EMA) (Texas Star 9U8Y) selling to $15,000 to Clint and Julie Langan, Bingara, NSW. A semen share in that individual was also retained

by Palgrove. Majestic was one of three full flush siblings that averaged $13,333.

Five went to Mt Douglas Pastoral Company, Mt Douglas, Clermont for a $11,400 average, topping at $17,000 for Larrikan (828kg) (134 EMA) (Palgrove Hardy H11). Blackall based, Bailey Properties, Paradise Downs, Blackall signed off on five at an $11,600 medium.

Top of the Paradise Downs purchases was the $14,000 Lawman (Triple B H656 (ET)) (25-months) (832kg). Taking the

Brangus to $6,000 at Monto Sale Summary MONTO ALL BREEDS SALE 16 Bulls Average $4,000 Top $6,000 (twice) Sale clearance 89%

Red Brangus topped at $6,000 on two occasions while their Black counterparts fetched sums to $5500 at the annual 2017 Annual Monto All breeds Bull Sale, Monto, September, last year.

The Brangus offering witnessed five vendors support the offering with the Red Brangus component setting a $5000 average for the four on offer while the Black component of 12 set a $3667 average.

Market toppers both came from the Redline prefix operated by the

Dingle family, Monto. First to make that money was the two-year-old Redline Marcus (Doonside Shiraz) selling to Peter and Kerrie Allan, Lyndale Equine Services, Stockhaven, Kingaroy. The following lot, Redline Magnus (Doonside Harry) a 22-month-old sold to Roy Bonisch, Mundubbera.

AGQUIP Field Day Conduvted over three days the annual AGQUIP Field Days are one of the larger events of it’s type in New South Wales.

Once again an enthusiastic band of Brangus breeders and supporters were on hand to fly the Brangus flag at AGQUIP 22nd to 24th August in Gunnedah NSW, last year. Over the three days there they reported there was a constant stream of visitors to the ACBA site from all over the state. The majority of the producer enquiry was for Brangus females or people wanting to source Brangus bulls for their herds in a bid to capitalise on hybrid vigour in the progeny. As always the Brangus promotional material was very popular especially the caps for the school children.

A big thank you to Merv and Dale Bailey who had two pens of beautiful Brangus heifers on display. Merv and Dale also provided the panels and were on duty every day. The Jorgensen family, Belview Stud, Delungra also had cattle on display, a bull and cow and calf.

Belview Bryonce proved popular with the visitors who liked to give her a pat and she loved it. A real feature of all the stock on the display was their quiet temperament, which impressed all who came to look.

Greg and Ange Boyce and Fleetwood Grobler also assisted in manning the site and the work involved in putting it all together.

Monto breeders Peter and Kristine Dingle, Redline Stud had another successful outing at the annual Fitzroy Crossing Sale, Fitzroy Crossing, Broome, WA in August, last year.

In all there were six Red Brangus within the catalogue that set an overall average of $7292 topping at $11,500 twice. Redline set a healthy medium of $7800 for their five. First of the equal top sellers at $11,500 was Redline

6/149 (P) a 20-month-old by Doonside 1669 (P) selling to Gina Rinehart’s, Liveringa Station Beef, Derby, WA while travelling partner, Redline 6/077 (P) (22-months) (Hanavale Cisco (P)) also reached the same figure selling to Liveringa as well. Redline sold an entrant by Doonside Omar (P) (AI) aged 21-months for $7500 to Liveringa and a Doonside 1669 son for $5000 to the same buyer. Their other sale was

Duarran hits $8000 Sale Summary DUARRAN ANNUAL SALE 30 Bulls Average $4,766 Top $8,000 Sale clearance 64% 11 Females Average $2,159 Top $2,750 Sale clearance 52%

One of the many features of the annual Duarran Brangus Sale, Duarran, Roma, in September last year was the huge geographical spread of buyers.

For vendors, Ian and Anne Galloway the result saw them product sell to far North Queensland and as far south as Wandoan, Moonie and all areas in between culminating in a 64 percent clearance overall.

John and Nerida Allen, Mawson Stud, Murgon secured the day’s top seller in the $8000, Duarran Latemore (P).

At 24-months Latemore (Duarran Genoa), was recently awarded the RNA 2017 Senior Champion Bull delivering a EMA measurement of 138 cm sq and fat depth scans of 12/8mm.

Latemore will join the Mawson herd founded in 2004 of around 200 registered breeders running at Murgon. Mawson has invested in Duarran genetics, both bulls and heifers in the past.

Adding support throughout the catalogue was the Penna family, Kangaroo Hills Station, Ingham, who signed off on eight bulls averaging $4937. Other major buyers on the day were Strathfield Pastoral Company, Strathfield Station, McKinlay, taking seven bulls averaging $4642.

Top selling female was a two-year-old heifer, selling for $2750 to Peter and Kristine Dingle, Redline Stud, Monto.

Duarran Latemore for $8,000.

In a massive vote of confidence all but one of the heifers were purchased by the Curr family, Cloncurry, who purchased 10 of the females to average them $2100.

Ian Galloway said the 2017 result was pleasing adding, “This result comes on the back of our recent steer successes in feedlot trials, we’re happy with their EMA data and their ability to develop muscle and carcase traits, particularly given the fact that they (the bulls) had only a relatively short preparation period on oats and the patchy seasonal conditions prevailing at the same time.”

A three state buyers gallery and strong competition resulted in a total clearance at the annual Nindooinbah Spring Sale, Nindooinbah, Beaudesert, October, last year.

The 62 males set a $6742 average with a top of $14,000 while another complete clearance was recorded in the female section with 100 head setting a $2870 result. For owners Ewan and Kaye Murdoch, the result saw the top seven supporters of the fixture take 107 head or 66 percent of the entire offering.

Obituary:

Gordon Cyril Kime 18.10.1935 – 29.6.2017 Gordon Cyril Kime was the forth child born to Frank and Eileen, The Old Place, Etna Creek and was one of eight children.

Like most children of that era, Gordon and his siblings furfilled duties on the property, milking cows (by hand), feeding calves and pigs and jobs before the daily trip to school at Etna Creek State School.

However, one of the more important jobs in the morning and the afternoon was checking the snares set for Wallabies as this was used for pocket money.

Gordon finished school at 14, commencing work for Bob Kersey where he milked cows and performed general farm jobs. Gordon then worked for Jack White at Barmoya just behind Rossmoya on Log Waterhole. Gordon’s rations for the week were a piece of corned beef and a tin of syrup. He’s return home on weekends on a bicycle to help on the farm, play cricket or tennis for leisure and return to his week job on a Sunday (20 miles each way). During that time he met Margaret Mary Shaw and that friendship would develop further.

Not long after that Gordon commenced work at ‘Doonside’ for Mrs Mavis Tennant, working with Bob ‘Jumbo’ Shaw, Margaret’s older brother. Both Gordon and Bob were good axemen and took on contract ringbarking on weekends and holidays to earn more money.

Soon Gordon had saved enough money and by trading his pushbike was able to purchase a second hand Matchless 500 Motorbike.

That relationship with Margaret blossumed and the couple were married in Rockhampton on the 26th September 1955 and raised two children Colin and Wendy.

It was during his time at Doonside that Gordon’s skills in both cattle breeding and horse skills and horsemanship were brought to the fore. He was taught the finer points and the art of bull preparation. He travelled with the Doonside Braford teams to the Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Brisbane Royal Shows.

Teams of up to 30 head of led bulls from Doonside were all fed and prepared for the annual Dalby and Rockhampton Sales. At his last Brisbane Royal for Doonside in 1973 the team of eight head won every championship in the Braford section from a field of 70 head.

After 23 years Gordon, Marg and the family left Doonside and moved to Couti – Outi where he worked closely with Lawson and Linda Geddes and family for the next nine years.

Gordon took on a part time job as a stud classifier for the Braford breed. This job took Gordon all over Australia where he again made a series of life long friends.

In 1979 Gordon and family together with the Geddes family, purchased Amaroo, Nebo. The early years were tough, no power and no phone for three years. During this time Gordon pursued his passion for drafting cattle and horses.

He regularly was involved in the Nebo Bushmans Carnival and was on hand for working bees, campdrafts and supplied calves for the poddy ride.

Not along after this Gordon commenced showing Brangus cattle at the Mackay Show taking out numerous championship titles for single steers and pens of steers over many years.

Gordon also promoted the breed by taking a led Brangus steer to the Brisbane Royal and this entry went onto win his class at the ‘Ekka’ Gordon also bred his own horses at Amaroo with notable stallions over the years being, Comara Advent, Yarrawa 303 and the present resident stallion, MacNamara Ordeal.

All of these stallions had won novice Drafts with ‘303’ the youngest horse to final at all three drafts at Warwick in the same year.

Radar a gelding by ‘303’ is now an Open Horse and won the ASH Novice Horse Of The Year.

Both Radar and Conote were campaigned by Gordon’s grandson, Sam as he went onto win the ACA Juvenile Rider Of The Year in 2015.

Gordon’s other grandson, Matt campaigns another homebred mount, Pattern with much success.

In 2003 Gordon and Margaret’s daughter Wendy passed away after a battle with cancer.

During this time whilst keeping the family together Gordon’s love of drafting took over again. With assistance from Pete Comiskey and both grandsons Gordon travelled and caught up with many of the long life friends and made and developed many more along the way.

Another of his favourite pastimes was preparing bulls for the annual Brangus Sales.

One of his favourite saying and mottos was ‘Take only the bulls that you would use yourself and don’t put bulls through the ring to make up the numbers’ …. something worth

remembering. Another of his many sayings and advise was ‘If you are going to do a job, do it to the best of your ability ‘ and the other important life lesson was ‘Quick’s the word, Smart’s the action’. The Amaroo brand and it’s cattle is know and recognizied both inside and outside the breed for it’s consistency and quality in all that is presented to the public.

Amaroo bulls have topped past annual ABCA Rockhampton Sales. They’ve always and still are a feature within the catalogues over many years where the type of animal and consistency of the cattle has never changed even though fades come and go.

We’ve said goodbye to a loving husband, a caring dad and a very proud grandfather, as well as a good mate, a great horseman and a great breeder of cattle.

A service to celebrate Gordon’s life was conducted at the East Chapel, Rockhampton Crematorium, Thursday, July 6th, 2017.

What was even more special for the ‘first timer’ was that both his exhibits were juniors and both were full maternal ET siblings.

Miss Foundation was the Grand Champion Female at the 2017 Emerald Feature Show. Both youngsters had a string of regional awards to their credit from shows across the state before their major wins to date.

Judge, Donna Robson, Batlow, NSW and her associate, Stephanie Roberts, Alkoomie Stud, Alton Downs, Qld shifted through the field of 48 exhibits from two states to deliver the two top accolades to the sibling champions.

Reg Robinson’s, Glen Heart prefix was again in the ribbon mix taking the Reserve Junior Champion male awardee and with two paternal youngsters, Glen Heart Dougall (Glen Heart Yogi) (476kg) and also the Reserve Junior Champion Female with Glen Heart Dollie. Dougall and Dollie both won their respective under 12 months classes.

Ian and Anne Galloway snared the senior champion male double with their red entries Duarran Latemore (Duarran Genoa) (822kg) (136EMA) (11/7mm) (23-months) and Duarran Laredo (26-months) (1034kg) (147EMA) (14/12mm) (ADG 1.31kg/day) taking the senior and reserve senior championship titles respectively. Laredo was the Junior champion bull from the 2016 RNA while Latemore was catalogued for the annual 2017 Duarran Sale where he topped proceedings at $8000. Laredo and Latemore are paternal halves.

Caitlin completed her secondary studies at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School in 2017 and is looking forward to joining her parents Bruce and Sandra in their Brangus operation. The girls spent a great week mustering, feeding the poddies, gem fossicking, swimming in the dam and helping out with general farm duties.

On the 4th of November, 2017, Jamie Saunders & Jane Geddes were married in front of a small group of family and close friends.

The ceremony and reception were held at the Keppel Bay Sailing Club on the main beach at Yeppoon. The couple walked across the main street together, overlooking a spectacular Saturday afternoon from the modern apartments to the venue across the street. Accompanying them was the two bridesmaids, Rory and Kaylee Saunders, the best man Joshua Saunders and the brides mother, Mrs Kay Geddes. The couple walked hand in hand down the isle together.

They were married at four o’clock on the beachfront by local celebrant Leanne Smith. The newly married couple enjoyed an exquisite night with family and friends watching the moon rise over the beautiful beach with waves sparkling. The happy couple took the truck on their honeymoon!

Recipe: Mim Walker

Texas Style Beef Brisket

(Slow Cooker)

PREP TIME 10 minutes/overnight

COOK TIME 6+ hours

SERVES 10-12

MARINADE

BEEF

BBQ SAUCE

3 tablespoons worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon chilli powder 2 bay leaves 2 garlic cloves (minced) 1 tablespoon celery salt 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon liquid smoke (optional)

Beef brisket 1 cup beef stock

1 medium onion (chopped) 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 cup ketchup ½ cup molasses ¼ cup cider vinegar 2 tablespoon chilli powder ½ tablespoon ground mustard

METHOD 1. Marinate beef overnight.

2. Cook beef in stock on low in slow cooker for six and a half hours.

Sometimes have to cut in half depending on size.

3. Cook onion and oil in saucepan. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer.

4. Remove brisket from slow cooker and discard of any remaining liquid. If large parts to fat have not cooked down separate from the beef and discard.

5. Return brisket to slow cooker and cook on low for a further 30 minutes covered with sauce.

6. Serve pulled or sliced brisket on warmed tortilla with coleslaw and sour cream.
