Don’t forget the quiet achievers

It is always hard to compete when your neighbour is a rock star. In Canterbury over the past decade the “rock star” of the region has been the dairy sector.

It’s an industry in Canterbury founded in part on the energy and hard work of North Island farmers who came down looking for more scale and opportunity on cheaper land, backed by the certainty of water which was and is often sadly lacking on the land they left.

However behind the farm gate there are some exciting initiatives taking place that are delivering greater productivity returns.

Towns like Ashburton and Timaru where many Insight readers and Ruralco Suppliers have businesses, have been revitalised and invigorated by this “rock star” sector.

The FarmIQ programme funded through Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) is working with selected farmers to deliver better profitability through improved business practices, technology and management.

That has come as the quiet cousins, the sheep and beef farmers of the region, have either been inspired by the sector’s energy and returns and converted, or stuck with what they have always done. That has sometimes involved shouldering some tough returns over the last decade, while being bombarded by news of dairying’s success.

Moving an “average” farmer from the 50th percentile to the top 20 percentile would increase farm profitability by a massive 130%.

A recent report carried out by the NZ Institute for Economic Research released by Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy indicates the PGP programmes stand to inject an additional $6 billion into the economy by 2025, thanks to improved productivity from the primary sector.

Some dry stock farmers have managed a foot in both camps; picking the opportunities the dairy sector has bought, possibly in winter grazing dairy cows, running young stock or growing crops to supply dairy herds.

Sheep and beef farms are highlighted as a key area benefiting from the research, with the PGP programmes expecting to deliver an additional $270 a hectare per year of additional income to sheep and beef farms.

But the sheep and beef sector has also become good at beating itself up in past years as it looked over the fence at its dairy neighbour.

Sometimes it has forgotten the value and potential that still underpins the sector.

The coming season brings expectations of continuing $100-plus lamb prices, firm beef returns in a growing market and a

mild winter—all should give everyone in Canterbury cause for celebration.

Ironically the shift to dairy has partially helped lift that potential. National sheep numbers have dropped over 10% in the past decade, with last year’s 25 million lambs tailed marking the lowest point ever, while breeding ewe numbers finally stabilised at about 31 million.

This has helped keep some tension between supply and demand in the market place, as the rest of the world’s flocks have also diminished, often by even more.

In the meantime, market demand for sheepmeat from China has soared. It is now our second largest market after Europe, buying 87,000t of lamb in 2012–13, and on target to grow further through 2013–14.

The market drivers for beef also remain positive, with cattle export volume down 1.1% this year after last year’s drought pushed volumes up, and overseas competitors also tight on numbers.

Our largest market for ground beef is the United States which has a mere 88 million head of cattle, the lowest inventory since 1951. This is pushing the US’s ability to export beef down by 8%, and import demand up by about 1%.

Meantime China’s insatiable growth in demand for meat protein continues, with estimates it will be up by 15% this year alone.

Ashburton pharmacists Rachel Eaton and Jane Kelly were balancing busy family lives with part-time jobs when they were offered a step up the ladder to owning their own pharmacy.

They seized the moment, back in 2004, with 10 per cent shareholdings in Unichem Ashburton. Now they are sole owners of the business and busier than ever.

retail store and dispensary, which included paying staff, dealing with tax, paperwork and Government regulations.

The Ashburton pharmacy was established

by Bede O’Malley, who offered the young mothers a slice of the business when he was elected to the Ashburton District Council.

They were one of the first business customers in the country to use the Xero online accounting software, and they alternate the administration work on a weekly basis so both office and pharmacy skills keep current.

Then in 2007 they bought the business outright and started on a steep learning curve managing not only their pharmacy duties, but the administration of the busy central

The pair have grown the dispensing side of the business and, paying heed to their own start in the industry, they have taken on interns, to help new pharmacists into the industry.

In 2011 they refurbished the Ashburton pharmacy and retail space, adding upstairs therapy rooms and spaces to hold skincare or make-up workshops. There is also a private consultation area, where Jane, Rachel and the pharmacy’s other full-time pharmacist Melissa West, can give vaccinations for influenza, meningococcal disease, shingles and whooping cough.

Rachel says the nature of a pharmacist’s work has changed greatly over the years.

They don’t just count pills, but act more as INSIGHT // JULY 2014

a triage centre where people are offered advice or referred to the doctor.

As well as giving medical advice, they are also accredited to dispense medication for uncomplicated urinary infections and the emergency contraceptive pill. They provide dispensing services to two Ashburton rest-homes and Idea Services, help patients manage medications with medical packing, and provide a community delivery service.

As part of the business’ growth curve, Unichem Ashburton will rebrand later this year to become a Life Pharmacy, reflecting the range of their dispensing service and huge retail side. Both Unichem and Life Pharmacy brands are part of Green Cross Health, of which the Ashburton store is an independent member.

Rachel said the wider health group had around 300 pharmacies and the collegial opportunities to get together to keep abreast of trends and health developments was important. She and Jane had grasped every opportunity to take the practice to the top of its game, through both management and health treatment.

“We are not just pill counters. We want to be out there in the community teaching people to take their medicine correctly.”

A popular service is compliance packaging for people who find it hard to remember to take their medicines or even open pill bottles.

Pharmacy staff will sort their capsules and tablets into convenient, safe and reliable packs, labeled with the time and day to take each medicine.

Rachel said the pharmacy was investing in new auto-dispensing technology to make compliance packing faster.

She and Jane are also currently completing a new qualification around wound care and diabetic foot care.

The pharmacy employs 16 full and parttime staff, who work in the dispensing and retail areas. Experience and ongoing training are important and Unichem encourages them to undertake a dispensing technician’s course or some sort of retail education through a polytech.

The dispensing and retail sides of the business are run as separate arms, with Jane in charge of dispensing and Rachel in charge of retail.

The size and layout of the store is important to showcase the huge range of products available, from skincare and make-up by Shiseido and Elizabeth Arden to hair products, first aid supplies and health remedies and supplements.

Rachel said men were not forgotten either, with their own range of skincare products, as well as shaving kits and toiletry bags.

The experienced staff instore are experts, with awards for customer service.

Rachel said their hands-on role as both pharmacists and owners meant plenty of interaction with customers and a chance for feedback. “We get plenty of hugs, and sometimes flowers and chocolates.”

Rachel is a West Coast girl at heart and went to primary school in Greymouth before heading over the Main Divide to boarding school at Rangi Ruru Girls School.

Jane Kelly dreamed of being a ballerina when she was little, but it is her career as a pharmacist that is keeping her on her toes.

She said she had an early interest in paramedics and says helping give medications to her sick grandmother sparked an interest in a career in pharmacy.

“I would always read the labels and count out the tablets.”

She headed to CIT after leaving school and completed a three-year diploma in pharmacy. It was a full-on practical course which put her in good stead for a yearlong internship at Dodds Pharmacy in Christchurch.

When boyfriend (now husband) Ben landed a job in the Hawkes Bay, Rachel followed and found a job in the Luckiest Lotto Pharmacy in New Zealand, run by the entrepreneurial Peter Dunkerley. She worked long hours between his pharmacies in Hastings and Napier, but loved it.

Then her father slipped her an advert about a job in Ashburton and she and Ben returned. That was 25 years ago and the couple have since made Ashburton their home, raising two daughters and becoming pharmacy owners.

Their sharing of duties became the foundation for their business partnership and friendship.

She said the work was interesting and varied and allowed her to see how the different businesses worked. As sole charge for Ron Luxton in Temuka, she was responsible for the books as well as dispensing medicine.

After marrying Mike and having two children, she was settled in a part-time role at Unichem when she and Rachel were offered the chance to buy into the well-established, corner pharmacy.

Rachel said it was a busy pharmacy, with a strong retail base and links to nearby St George’s Hospital.

Rachel first worked at Unichem, when it was owned by founder Bede O’Malley, as maternity leave cover for Jane. Then later Jane covered for Rachel when she was pregnant.

The former Ashburton College student also completed a diploma in pharmacy from CIT and completed her intern year with Ashburton pharmacist Gordon Menzies at UFS. She stayed on for another four years then worked as a locum in pharmacies around Mid and South Canterbury.

Three years later, they took over the business.

It was a baptism by fire and suddenly they were responsible for every decision and action, from ordering supplies to paying wages.

Jane said professional advice had been important. She and Rachel heap praise on their accountant Dave Matheson and on their ANZ bankers.

“Dave thinks about where we are going and how we are going to get there. It takes the pressure off us.”

Family support has also been vital. Jane’s husband Mike has been a house husband for five years, and has recently purchased his own business in 2013.

Her parents Lisa and Eddie Hauwai have also been huge supporters.

Jane said she tried to separate work from home life, but often spent her evenings reading up on business, or clinical pharmacy.

The 2014 Annual Ruralco Supplier Awards

Building on the success of last year’s event, the 2014 Ruralco Supplier Awards rendition promises to be an event not to be missed.

The awards celebrate business growth and development, marketing and customer service right from the smallest owner/ operators through to medium and large businesses. In addition to the prestigious Supreme Award, which last year deservedly went to Peter May Limited, suppliers are vying for the coveted, Members’ Choice

Award, Emerging Business and Excellence in Marketing Awards as well as a number of Business Growth and Development Awards across on-farm and off-farm suppliers.

But the event is not all about the awards.

Above all, it’s about giving something back to Ruralco Suppliers in an exclusive annual event.

Each year the awards evening grows in stature as one of the must-attend events on the supplier calendar, and this year will be no exception with the announcement that David Todd, also known as “Toddy”, has been engaged as guest speaker.

David grew up on a sheep and cattle farm in the Hawke’s Bay, near Waipukurau. After school he headed south to Lincoln University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Commerce, Farm Management and Valuation.

Returning home to the family farm was always part of his master plan, but as they do, his plans changed. David launched himself into the world of rural banking, establishing a successful career which expanded into marketing, training and development. It included time spent as both a rural manager and key account manager, before facilitating ASB’s prestigious graduate programme.

Throughout his corporate career David was consistently recognised as an effective communicator, able to reach a wide audience, backed by a wealth of knowledge gained from life experience and decades of involvement in personal development programmes.

In 2011, David made the life-changing decision to cut the cord strings from the corporate bubble he had been immersed in for so long, branching out into the world of the self-employed as a full-time presenter and motivational speaker.

It’s been a huge change, but one that David has relished as different opportunities arise.

To date he has worked with a number of rural-based businesses including MyFarm, Landcorp, Dairy NZ, Silver Fern Farms and Ravensdown.

While he happily admits he is no All Black nor has he climbed Mt Everest, David’s authenticity and down-to-earth humorous delivery coupled with his ability to empathise with the unique features of rural New Zealand, provides audiences the opportunity to genuinely connect.

David isn’t focused on saving the world, but instead he prefers to keep things refreshingly simple, concentrating on what you as individuals can control through the A, B, Cs—attitude, balance and commitment. “You are not going to change the world unless you make changes nationally. And you aren’t going to make changes at a national level unless you start making changes locally, and that can’t happen until you start making changes yourself. It’s about what you can do personally to be the best that you can be,” says David.

His presentations are regarded as being both entertaining and thought-provoking, guaranteeing the 2014 Ruralco Supplier Awards will be a night to remember.

Do it once, do it right

Identifying and filling a niche market has meant success for Bus and Truck Body Work.

The Ashburton business has been going 10 years now, panel beating and spraypainting large vehicles, from buses, trucks and motorhomes to diggers and boats.

In fact, size is no problem for Keith Johnstone and his crew as their 15m long spraybooth is the largest in Mid Canterbury. Big and small vehicles are easily accommodated.

Keith and Julie-Anne Wederell own the business, which is based in the Ashburton Riverside Industrial Park. They have made sure they stand out from the crowd because of their ability to handle oversize vehicles.

The workplace philosophy is “do it once, do it right” and this pertains to all jobs and equipment, including surface preparation and painting.

While technology meant advances in some parts of the industry, as long as people are driving there will be collision repairs to deal with.

“New Zealand has one of the worst UV rates in the world and we use good quality paints and materials to counter that. You don’t want it to fade, you want it to last a long time.”

Being an exclusive supplier to Ruralco had brought benefits for the business as it grew and expanded, and began to identify new markets.

He said he enjoyed the challenge of giving an old farm vehicle a new lease on life by panelbeating out dents and removing rust, and giving it a new paint job. There were special custom jobs too, for vintage car owners and other restoration enthusiasts.

Amongst the most common engineering repair jobs was fixing trailer tail gates that had been ripped off or bent. Some vehicles arrive as the result of an accident, others as part of regular maintenance.

Keith was a panelbeater and spray-painter at Ritchies Coachlines for 26 years before branching out on his own 10 years ago. He spotted a gap in the market for large vehicle repairs, and decided to put his experience and skills to use in his own business.

The business has grown from strength to strength, and moved from small Alford Forest Road premises to the current large custombuilt workshop on Range Street, where the 15m heated spray booth operates alongside a smaller 10m bake oven.

Keith is hands-on and works alongside three full-time spraypainters and two panelbeaters while Julie-Anne keeps the office ticking over smoothly.

They have worked at developing a wide range of customers and vehicles from all around the South Island, and even a few from the North.

They have valued relationships with trucking companies that operate fleets of large vehicles, right through to motorhome owners needing repairs and maintenance on their lifestyle rigs. Then, there’s the farm equipment and small vehicle market.

It’s not just panel beating and spray painting carried out at Bus and Truck Body Work, Keith and his staff also do light engineering, motorhome maintenance and repairs, caravan repairs and refurbishments, and fibreglass repairs.

“We’ll paint anything from a wheelbarrow to a big digger,” he says.

Keith has a long-time passion for vehicles.

He started at 15 learning both panel beating and spray painting, and outside of work he and Julie-Anne are into hotrods and classic cars.

The ins and outs of Intellectual Property

The term “Intellectual Property” can easily be misunderstood and considered to only be the realm of multinationals such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola. However, intellectual property is of importance to most, if not all, traders. This article will explain the various forms of intellectual property and how they may apply to your business.

Trade Marks A trade mark is any sign which distinguishes one trader’s goods or services from those of another trader. As well as being words and logos, trade marks can also be a colour, shape, sound or smell. Most traders have some distinctive element or sign which enables consumers to distinguish between their goods and services and those of their competitors.

Trade mark registrations give the owner exclusive rights to that trade mark throughout New Zealand. Without a registration, rights in a trade mark are limited by the scope of its reputation or goodwill, which could be geographically limited. If another trader started using the same or a very similar trade mark in a different part of the country in which there is no reputation or goodwill, this may preclude the original trader from expansion plans, such as opening franchises in different parts of the country.

Trade mark registrations last indefinitely as long as they are renewed every 10 years and continue to be used.

Patents The owner of a patent has a monopoly right to an invention or inventive process. The subject matter of patents can be very wide ranging, relating to, for example, machines, consumer products, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing processes.

To be patentable, an invention must be new (i.e. the patent application is lodged before there is any use, offer for sale or public disclosure of the invention), must not be an obvious adaptation of what is already known in the area of technology and must be useful.

A patent can last for up to 20 years as long as renewal fees are paid during the patent’s life.

Given that it is a monopoly right over the invention, a patent can be an important asset to a business, and can be required by investors and potential buyers of the business.

Registered Designs A registered design protects the novel appearance of a product. Consequently, an application for a registered design must

be lodged before the product bearing the design is used, shown non-confidentiality to others or offered for sale.

In most countries it is not possible to obtain a registered design for the shape of a product if that shape is dictated solely by the function that the product is to perform.

In New Zealand, the design registration lasts for 15 years as long as renewal fees are paid after 5 and 10 years.

Copyright Copyright protects original literary, artistic, musical and dramatic works from unauthorised forms of copying, provided that certain conditions are met.

Limited copyright protection also exists in three dimensional products that have been industrially applied (i.e. if more than 50 copies of the product have been manufactured).

Copyright in New Zealand usually lasts for 50 years from the end of the year in which the author of the copyright work dies. Copyright protection for three dimensional products that have been industrially applied is usually limited to 16 years.

Copyright protection arises automatically in New Zealand as soon as a copyright work is made. There is no official Copyright Register.
