It’s the first time Instore Days has been run solely under the Ruralco banner, and it also marks the return of Ruralco’s Gift and Homeware division to its Ashburton store following earthquake strengthening and renovation work - just in time for this year’s Ruralco Instore Days. Over recent months the Gift and Homeware section was relocated to East Street, Ashburton, while structural work was undertaken at the Burnett Street site. Now the work is completed, customers and staff have a safer and more inviting environment to shop and work in and this year’s Instore Days provides the perfect opportunity for cardholders to enjoy the new surroundings while also taking advantage of all the offers and expertise they have come to expect at the two day event.

It is 23 years since the first Instore Days was held, and every year there’s a new crop of innovative technologies and products on show, supported by the expertise and knowledge of those within the rural industry and agricultural sector. Improving the development of your calves

If you’re looking for calves to progress exceptionally well, the swift development of their rumen is of chief importance. It is a key measure for timely weaning and augurs well for the targets ahead. Ruminant nutrition expert Wendy Morgan makes a case for sensible feed choices to help achieve great outcomes. The goal of rearing healthy calves economically, be it for beef finishing or replacement heifers, is inherently tied to promoting early rumen development. It can make a significant difference to your success. So, what can you do to help the calf’s rumen mature into a fully functioning organ that can effectively digest feed? Biologically speaking, you’re looking at providing an environment that assists with the development of the papillae – the many finger-like protrusions that line the digestive tract and absorb nutrients. “Starches and sugars play a big role,” explains SealesWinslow Nutrition and Quality Manager, Wendy Morgan. “When the likes of wheat or barley are fermented in the rumen, they produce volatile fatty acids that encourage papillae development.” And yes, you’ll want to add fibrous material, such as hay, but be mindful that it’s largely helpful for improving the musculature of the rumen, rather than for its nutritional content.
With the main objective in mind, namely to get animals weaned off milk as quickly and economically as possible, it pays to introduce meal very early on so the calves get used to it. “It’s crucial that the meal smells and tastes really fresh,” recommends Wendy. “A highly palatable product will ensure that calves readily take to it.” Quality has its place That’s where a quality meal pays off, because a respected formulation with quality ingredients encourages early intake and promotes rumen development. It basically sets the calf up to be ready for pasture as quickly as possible. The quality of the protein is also a significant, yet often overlooked, matter. “The most valuable form of protein contains a good balance of amino acids, which is invaluable for good growth of lean tissue,” notes Wendy. She highly regards proteins from quality plant ingredients such as soya bean, cottonseed, sunflower or canola: they are readily digestible by the animal and feature in SealesWinslow’s calf feed formulations. Unfortunately, some calf feed contains feed urea as a source of nitrogen. However, it is not just the nitrogen that is needed by young calves; rather, it is the amino acids (which contain nitrogen) that are essential for their healthy growth and development. Trust the source of your feed In light of the many choices and providers on the market, it can be difficult to compare the various offerings, especially when
ingredients seem similar. However, with farmers increasingly becoming aware of the risks associated with poor feed quality, the FeedSafeNZ accreditation is now seen as a major differentiator. The accreditation programme, designed by NZ Feed Manufacturers Association, effectively safeguards the quality of local stockfeed and mitigates risks in the manufacturing process. “You’d struggle to overstate the value of regular checking of raw materials, of sampling and validating finished products,” notes Wendy. She’ll readily tell you that there’s no substitute for extensive monitoring and total traceability of all ingredients. What’s more, while properly pelleted ingredients deliver a perfectly dosed mixture where every mouthful is the same, a casually combined blend can easily lead to over- or under-dosing. The implications of overdosing can be toxicity, whereas under dosing may cause insufficient delivery of additives that could result in outbreaks such as coccidiosis – both scenarios can be easily avoided with the right feed choice from providers such as SealesWinslow.
