Supporting our cardholders

Co-operatives are formed to serve the needs of their membership and Ruralco primarily does this through our everyday task of making life easier on farm. But cooperatives, by their very nature, also offer much more.

Part of their core function is to also be community minded and having a strong level of social conscience and responsibility is an important aspect of any co-operative.

It’s something Ruralco has a long history of displaying, initially through its parent, ATS (which was formed in 1963) and more latterly under the Ruralco banner.

For decades we have offered support to thousands of community events by way of financial sponsorship or through the donation of products, merchandise, time, publicity or expertise. Co-operatives exist primarily to serve their members, and sponsorship is part of what we do for our community to thank our supporters.

Young Farmer’s events; schools; local fire brigades; sports clubs and sporting events; livestock groups; and a wide variety of community support groups and industry organisations have all benefited in some way over the years with thousands of

dollars going to worthy causes. It is, and continues to be, an expensive exercise, but the payback is well worth it.

In addition to this huge array of smaller events and organisations, Ruralco is also a strong supporter of many A & P shows and other annual agricultural events, and we are committed to a few larger sponsorship opportunities, which many of you will probably already be aware of.

One of these is the Ruralco Longbeach Coastal Challenge, which we are proud to be the principal naming sponsor of.

We have had a long association with this community event which started in 2007 as a mountain bike challenge, and has grown into a run, walk and biking event attracting all levels of competitors from all over the South Island. It’s a joint Longbeach School and Hinds & Districts Lions Club fundraising venture, with all profits going back to the local community. This year’s Ruralco Longbeach Coastal Challenge will be on 26 November at Longbeach Estate. It’s a fantastic opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery along our stunning coastline and we look forward to seeing you there.

Another venture we are proud to support is Arable Y’s. This is a FAR initiative aimed at building confidence and creating opportunities for generation Y arable farmers and was set up after FAR noticed the majority of growers attending their field days were over the age of 35. They recognised there was a gap in the arable industry knowledge chain which needed to be filled and we are very pleased to show our support for this important initiative. The Arable Y’s group meets monthly and their meetings are tailored to the needs of younger arable farmers with an emphasis on filling knowledge gaps and providing the necessary expertise and networks these farmers need to succeed and grow their farming operations and industry connections.

Ruralco also continues to support the annual United Wheat Growers Competition.

We do this by investing time, funds, publicity, selecting judges and by helping farmers submit their entries and we do it because we see value in supporting an event which showcases the skill and depth of our cropping sector and in particular, our grain farmers. Judging criteria includes moisture weight, size and milling class, along with a standing crop’s colour and appearance , and entries for this popular competition come from far and wide.

Traditionally Mid Canterbury organisations have been the main beneficiaries of our sponsorships. This is unsurprising given our cardholder base is a large proportion of the Mid Canterbury region, and when you consider our 80 plus staff (along with their wider families) are also integrally involved in the district. But this is changing as the Ruralco network and memberships continues to grow beyond this area.

Applications for sponsorship need to be submitted to Ruralco and we do have a process we adhere to when confirming or turning down sponsorship applications from community groups or agri-industry.
